My First Reef Tank - 30g Mixed Reef Disaster (Year 2000)

Back in 2000, instead of picking up a freshwater aquarium set up, my friend and I fell in love with a baby box fish and a bi-color blenny and decided to give saltwater aquarium a try. It has been a wonderful journey that has been very damaging to the bank account. -- Music: Darling by DJ Quads https://soundcloud.com/aka-dj-quads/darling-vlog-music

I’m on my first tank and so far, it’s a success. I have a clownfish pair and a coral beauty angel in a 45 gallon

Great video. I have been keeping freshwater aquarium on and off for decades. Now I'm finally thinking of saltwater. I'm taking it slow and learning as much as i can from tubers like you. Really appreciate your down to earth style and those behind the scene shots. please do more of those candid how-to and progress videos. keep up reefing, your tanks are exactly what I aspire to build. oh, love your frogfish!

Haha sounds like my start with freshwater fish. Haven't dived into saltwater yet - plan on it when my betta in the 29 gallon passes away.

Loved it man, I started with a 45l two clowns a cleaner shrimp and a feather worm even managed to make a candy cane grow through feeding using only 11watts lights that the fish store at the time(2007) told me was fine. been a beautiful hobby only to enjoy the true love of it

it was cool to learn how you got started in the hobby. doing a vid on it sounds like fun :) it's cool to see how you have grown in the hobby and really learned how you like things. the 2 tanks you have now look absolutely nothing like your first tank haha good stuff though.

Great vid, I had a identical set and as a matter of fact I busted out the old Wal Mart 29 gal a week ago. I cured my old pukani dead rock which you you inspired me to reuse, I bought me a tetra whisper 60 gal filter like the one I had 7 years ago that I had great success with along with my redsea Berlin airlift skimmer. I am moving my AI prime light to the set up as well. I'll be ordering the sand this coming week. I have a 14 gal Nano that I have been struggling with so I'm converting it to freshwater. My old 29 was a great and cheap set up as well as being easier to maintain that the biocube. I had let the 29 go after a few crashes, one with a busted heater second with my cat dropping the light fixture in the tank and electrocuted my livestock. Cat is fine.

Inappropriate Reefer - 8 years ago
YIKES, sorry to hear about the busted heater and especially the cat dropping the light fixture into the tank, that is just super unfortunate! I wish I dove more into the equipment list in this video but I was worried it'd get boring.. I actually added a Whisper filter to my 30g as well to increase the flow! Good stuff. The Berlin Airlift Skimmer is also a classic I kept hearing about (never had a chance to try it). I had no luck with skimmer... tried the Skilter and then the Red Sea Prizm, all did not produce good skim so I gave up on skimmer until my latest 45g tank. I did no realize I have to keep a constant water level (I had no sump and I was just randomly topping off water), oops.

My anemone moves around a lot as well. my best advice asses what is going on your tank most anemones will stay put as long as they are happy and their needs are being meet. it could be your lights, feeding, flow or your levels may be out of their normal areas. try starting with your levels and lights. if these fail to make him happy asses the feeding habits you use ( mine is more active when I skip feeding) finally you can try adjusting the flow he is receiving. Let me know if you need any more advice as well.

Is it possible to put in a piece of rock between the brain and the anemone as a barrier... even temporarily until the anemone moves away? That would be my first approach.

Almost everyone says the same. I should have learned more before starting. They're right. My reefing life started when i went to buy food for the turtles. After purchasing it, the guy says "Are you interested in a nano marine set up for 50 quid?" Instantly attracted i had a look and seemed a bargain for that price so my first tank was a 30 litre I was led to believe was sufficient for a starter tank. You kidding me? Its not big enough to be a QT for a peppermint shrimp, well, almost. Anyway, I quickly upgraded to a 125 litre plus a few litres in the external filter and booster. All this has happened in the past 3 months or so and in another 3 months time I fully intend to have a 500 litre up and running. possibly by late January and my 125 will become my QT meaning the only money wasted will be £50 on the initial tank which wont be a total waste as ill use it as a QT for zoas  eventually.

Sometimes 3 times in a week because I cant resist going back for something I left behind, Im still buying my water (Friday ready for Saturday water change) and they have new arrivals every Wednesday. Then there are the other 3 LFS that I call in during my rounds just to see if there's anything new I like. Im also keeping an eye on how clean the tanks look, how healthy the fish look, etc. over a period of time, roughly another 3 months, until I'm ready to go and get the livestock I want. Mainly the Tangs as I have most of the others I want already in the 125. That's when the fun will really begin..... A Powder Blue, 3 x Yellows, a Purple, 2 x Regals, a Naso aka (Lipstick) and possibly a Clown Tang too. Expensive list so I wanna make sure I get the best quality fish for my money, Apologies for the essay, I got carried away lol
Inappropriate Reefer
Inappropriate Reefer - 8 years ago
Hahaha I know that feeling! Do you make the round at all your LFS once a week?
DrOfWelshMagic
DrOfWelshMagic - 8 years ago
Tell me about it, the £5.79 turtle food has cost me over a £1000 and rising thus far and I'm not even started yet. With hindsight I would do it all over again too as I am really growing into the hobby, I'm at the "feels like addiction" stage. I cant leave the shop without buying a fish or a coral. I am getting better though, I only came out with 3 turbo snails last time ;-)
Inappropriate Reefer
Inappropriate Reefer - 8 years ago
LOL! I like how your everyday trip to the LFS to buy food for turtle turned into you bringing a nano tank home! You are on the fast track on upgrading your tank! At least with every upgrade, we learn more about what we want in our new set up so I suppose the earlier tanks were not a total waste! Btw, just subbed to you, looking forward to seeing your evolution over time!
