My 90 Gallon Reef Tank Update

This is an update video tour of my 90 gallon reef tank system. Video was taken using Nikon D7100 and D7200. Corals include montipora Capricornus, birdsnest coral, favia/favites coral, palythoa, three rose bubble tip anemones, acropora, rare palythoa tuberculosa, frogspawn coral, green leather coral, tridacna maxima clam, pagoda coral, candy cane coral frag, kenya tree coral, porites lobata, Montipora flabellata. For fish I have two clownfish, a sailfin tang, a coral beauty, and a bristletail filefish. The aptasia eating filefish luckily saved my tank from a terrible outbreak of majano anemones. For equipment- 2 ecotech vortech mp40s with battery backup, 2 kessil A350w tuna blue, mag 18 return pump, aqua medic reef doser, jbj auto topoff, protein skimmer, small refugium growing caulerpa. The mp40s are set alternating master/slave and are set on gyre mode. I use sechem reef fusion for calcium and alkalinity dosing. All of the live rock I collected and brought back in a suitcase from Grand Cayman. All kidding aside....you should switch over to the Triton Method and your tank will absolutely go crazy with growth. Even if you don't switch over, which I have no clue why you wouldn't, you should at least use their tank testing service so you can get all those questions answered you keep bringing up during the entire video. Knowing EXACTLY what is going on chemically is pure gold man....pure GOLD!

Yeah, and currently setting up my second tank....a 90g seahorse and softies tank.....that I'll do Triton from the start. The ONLY downside to Triton is the initial extra cost to get a reliable dosing system and decent lighting for your refugium. Since I'm doing it from the start I don't have the extra cost of switching to a different sump, one designed for the Triton Method, I'll have it from the start. And without a doubt.....it works....corals LOVE it....and it's solid science.

I've been following the BRS episodes and it got me interested in the Triton Method.  Do you use it?  Unfortunately right now I don't have any time to put into my tank because I'm away at college.  Maybe this summer.

These are the A350s so don't have color and intensity control like the A360s I can only dim the blue and white channels.  I keep both channels 100%.

Amazing tank man! What would you think would be the best way to learn what to dose and how much? Do you test the water to see what your corals are consuming first to determine how much you have to dose?

still no bubbles on that BTA , feed it G damn
Joshua Turner
Joshua Turner - 7 years ago
There is no confirmed reason why bubble tips go from straight tentacles to bubbles. Feeding may or may not cause the bubbles. Actually cranked the flow up on my mp40s a few months ago and now all of them have bubbles.

You can try the live food from AlgaGen called ReefPods for Mandarins. It will help bump up the pod population in your tank for them until coaxing them to frozen foods

sorry im new to all of this now after I took a marine tank (huge) like yours and it came with coral rocks and 1 live coral which looks like loads of small hands flowing. I have a dory (lol) fish and huge yellow looking angle fish. The tank and water was running and so now i look into how to add live coral as i like your plants. Then comes fish. This tank was given to me free as the original owner recently got divorced and the stupid wife was gonna let them die.
How did you attach your live coral to rocks? and because live coral is an animal will it kill them if i accidentally knocked it or chip it? thanks in advance love your tank.

This looks beautiful. Smart move on the battery backup - I lost my favourite fish due to an overnight power outage because of an ice storm. Tank temp went down to 68 and I figure that's what got him. I've subbed to follow along.

I have 2X A350w. I don't have them on any sort of ramp timer. I just have them on an analogue timer that turns them on for 100% intensity 11 hours per day. They go on late in the morning so I can still enjoy the tank later in the evening.

I have a question hopefully you can answer. I had 2 MP10's on my last system. The tank was 36Lx18Wx18H. The MP10's sat about 1/3 the way down. I did that because any lower they sucked up the sand (mid size grain). The issue I found was I couldnt get enough flow out of the mp10s near the middle of the tank or low in the tank. I had to turned up to 75%. That was the balance I found for that system to not tear up the sand and to get the flow I needed in the middle but I was never really happy with it. These where the smart drivers (gen2). I am now in the process of setting up a new system. 24x18x24. I am going bare bottom (no Sand) and have 6 inches of added depth. I was wondering if I should go 1 mp10 or 1 mp40. I am thinking the mp40 will draw up more water at the deeper depth and have a softer more spread out stream and being turned way down be much quieter. I hear the new Mp40wQD put out 40% more flow and are way quieter then the old models. is a mp40 going to be way to much? I need next to no sound. I would love it if you could do a video putting the camera next to the mp40 a each interval so i could hear it and describe the flow in the tank at each interval also.
Joshua Turner
Joshua Turner - 8 years ago
I am not going to pretend to be an expert in reef tank equipment and flow/pumps. This is my first tank. I think you'd be better off asking questions like this on a reef forum then youtube. I am willing to bet though that an mp40 tuned way down would have a much more spread out and less jetlike flow than an mp10 but I have never personally owned an mp10. As far as sound, my mp40s are nearly totally silent. When tuned to max they make a nearly inaudible hum that can only really be heard by putting your ear directly up to the pump motor.

You could try feeding the mandarin some cyclopeze and or trigger pods.Something that could help increase your pod population is adding phytoplankton,it helps feed filter feeders and pods alike.

Hey, nice tank. Looks like you've had a lot of success with the kessils. I put a pair a360we on my 90. Wondering What kind of intensity and duration do you run these light at? I haven't pushed mine past 50% wondering if my mixed reef could eventually handle more without burning corals.

Stunning Monti. Very nice tank. I searched for system set ups ( regarding equipment/tank size), similar to mine and yours popped up. Im rolling with a 350 and a 150 on mine i may need 2 350s now 2 years on i think as my 30" depth could be an issue for growth on the bottom but a par reader would tell the truth on that i guess. . Keep up the updates. Great work.
BudgiesBox
BudgiesBox - 8 years ago
Yes your probably right. Another one even a 160 w would fill the gap i suppose. I want the Ap700 when I can justify it ...and not tell my wife..expensive !
Joshua Turner
Joshua Turner - 8 years ago
Thanks! That Monti is definitely one of my favorites. I bet kessil A350 penetrates well to 30" you just may need more because they have a narrower spread. The ones I have are the A350W (wide angle) and my Maxima at the bottom is still doing well in a 24" deep tank.
mitian
mitian - 8 years ago
The whole tank is nice but the red monti is one of my favorites! I am almost sure your tank is mature enough to have a mandarin fish and that you have a nice amount of copepods to sustain his (hers) appetite.
Joshua Turner
Joshua Turner - 8 years ago
Thats sort of what I thought about the coral beauty. Buying pods to seed the tank every so often is a good idea. I always see amphipods living in the sump and when I pull out the caulerpa they come with it so I know they are there. Thanks for the advice. This definitely clears up most of my doubts.
mitian
mitian - 8 years ago
Hey buddy, You know I have a coral beauty and he or she is pretty good, but the thing is I believe all fish go for pods, but not at the point like the mandarin- remember for the mandarin that is the main source of food, your coral beauty eats probably almost everything. As long as your mandarin eats a few daily it will be fine- I buy a bottle of pod every 2 or 3 months and mine has been fine so far,,, sometimes I see the pods at night once the lights have been off for a while I check the rocks and I see them moving and sometimes I don't see them that much- even when I change the socks and I place the sucks facing down in the bucket I will see a few pods there. Have a good one and good luck.
Joshua Turner
Joshua Turner - 8 years ago
Thanks! I really like that monti too. It would have a nicer growth pattern though if I stopped having to break off pieces. I think I will try a mandarin then. Do you think the coral beauty would compete for pods? I always see it pecking at the rocks for stuff.
