Hey Creatures!! I've missed you!
Just remember that nano saltwater aquariums are NOT easier to look after than a larger aquarium. Please don't be fooled into thinking that smaller means less maintenance, or that they're easier!
If you are considering a reef tank or any animal, please consult multiple sources and do as much research as you can, including watching lots of pet tutorials, pet care videos, reading books and care sheets and joining forums where you can ask questions to people who are experienced and passionate about their species.

If you have any care tips of your own or information that could help others with their reef tanks, leave a comment below!

Thanks to Runaway for sponsoring this video. You can check out their beautiful app by following the link in my description box.
Also thanks to 'The Aquatic Design Centre' in London for answering my fish care questions, and also thanks to 'Absolutely Fish' in New Jersey for helping me to pick out an established Nano :)

My tip is if you have the space for your first salt tank reach for above 30g it gives you so many more options than a small pico or nano tank. I’m starting with 60g and I have about 10 fish and inverts planned for this tank and several coral species planned. If I were to start in a 10g tank. I could have 1-3 fish so a larger tank is has much more options.

After the tank has had at least a couple months or two to set up, I highly recommend a green mandarin fish or dragonnet fish. They’re very beautiful and generally easy to care for. You will need a copepod population or buy a bottle of tiger pods. Just keep in mind Em that things can go wrong very easily but don’t get discouraged. Salt water tanks are very rewarding if you have patience and lots of love to give. Good luck Em! Love your channel

Also my clowns really love mysis shrimp.

Actually, smaller tanks are more difficult to care for, as when things happen, they happen quickly...they're not for the faint of heart.

So cute! Love it! One firendly correction to what he said: A betta fish can live up to ten years, depending on how it was raised as a baby. Asian breeders (where the majority of betta fish come from) are usually unethical in the treatment of this fish. They are highly stressed and are fed food that forces them to grow fast, which significantly reduces their life expectancy. If a betta is raised by someone who actually cares for its life expectancy and is bought by someone who knows what they are doing, a betta can live anywhere form 8 to 10 years. Think long-term and buy local. <333

I love this tank!!!!!! I have a tropical freshwater tank that I do all the care for. I’m only 12 so I’m a bit limited to the pets I can have but I have some pet garden snails I keep in a terrarium, a gorgeous half moon betta fish named Cosmo and a Lakeland terrier named Molly. Once I’m older I would love to get a saltwater tank. Also I noticed in the video he mentioned neon tetras as good beginners fish. Those are one of the many fish species in our big community tank. I agree they are amazing beginners fish.

Thats a really good brand of two part. You can get a nano to an ultra low maintenance state with a good filtering system, and a top off system. As of now, I find my 30 gallon to be less stressful than my 220 gallon. I’m fairly new to the hobby as well. My number 1 tip for you is that if you see any green bubble algae, take it out very gently without popping it, as soon as you see it. I was told to not worry about it, and I now have a huge outbreak. That is a good brand of clownfish food as well.

You should do a creature feature on bettas and goldfish. Talk about proper care and how keeping them in vases and bowls is cruel and improper husbandry.
Grimalkin Felidae

I appreciate the intro, but I wouldn't recommend talking to any kind of pet store employees (aquatic only or otherwise). I've been to aquarium stores whose employees didn't even mention cycling (which I'm sure you know is integral). They always just say to leave the filter on overnight. And these were successful, well-rounded stores.

Hi, Em! Hope you're well! Just some advice about your clowns since I am shocked no one has said anything in the comments, but, be very careful mixing different species of clownfish -- different species of clowns can fight, and can even kill each other. There are very, very rare exceptions to where this CAN work provided there is no competition for sea anemones, and plenty of room, but they are still kinda territorial fish when it comes to their space, and the anemone in the tank even when captive bred.

clowns can live anywhere from 20-30 years in captivity. Even if things go smoothly for a few years, doesn't mean it's going to work for the long term. In addition, you can leave one morning with what appears to be a peaceful tank, and come back home to a dead clownfish.

If you want long term success, I'd recommend getting a pair of the same species of clownfish, and a host of anemone and then go from there, but, It's never ideal to have more then a single pair of clownfish in a nano tank/aquarium, nor a pair of mixed species of clowns to avoid because you could have potential problems later on, even if they are captive bred. Things could change as time goes on with their temperaments and it's all factored on how they are taking to their new home.

HOWEVER, there is more success if you want to keep multiple clownfish or try and mix species, add them to the aquarium all at one time when they’re younger. Not sure how old your clowns are, but doing so while they are young allows them to familiarize themselves with the other fish in the aquarium and as they grow up together, they’re usually very peaceful with each other if these conditions are met, but, it's not 100% certain over the course of several decades. Anyway, I hope I was able to share some information that is useful to you, and wishing you the best of luck in your endeavors! Xoxox

Hydrometers are not accurate. They're always off. Get a refractometer. You also do not need to measure it every time. Once it's where you want it you can simply get an auto topoff system whihc tops off your tank with fresh RO/DI water so keep the salinity stable. Or you do by hand. Just mark the waterlevel with a black marker on the glass and when it's below the marl you know you have to top off your tank to get the sailinity down again.

Nice tank! :-) I've been keeping freshwater fishes for 30 odd yrs and have never thought about moving over to saltwater because it requires much more work keeping them as compared to freshwater tanks. The key to keeping fishes is to keep things as simple as possible so that you'll have more time to sit back, relax and admire your tank. Good luck on your new found hobby!

Hey don't start with a nano tank, it's 2 times harder to maintain the adequate water parameters in nano tanks and if something goes wrong goodbye tank instantly. You don't want to run before you know how to walk. You would save a lot of money if you start with fresh water first, but whatever. Mistakes cost a fortune in saltwater aquarism; good luck!

The most persistent falsehood I hear in the saltwater aquarium hobby is that nano tanks are harder to keep than larger tanks.
I've ran several 2.5 and 5.5 gallon tanks, saltwater with corals and fish, for several years now with very few problems. And maintenance on a small tank is certainly easier than with a larger tank. I think people may have a tendency to rush the acclimation of a smaller tanks simply because they are smaller. Cycle a nano tank just as you would a very large tank and you should be successful.

I mainly keep goldfish and use a few different "flavors" of the food, they have a few options for goldfish that i use, plus betta fish food as well. The extent of my knowledge about aquariums is that the tiny rocks you can buy can be used in gardening. If you have indoor plants you can cover the top soil completely in the rocks to cut down on gnat eggs instead of spraying your plants. And it looks good.

Awesome! I've always wanted to dive into Saltwater but the money investment has always turned me away. I currently keep 3 freshwater planted tanks. If I were to give one bit of advise, it would be to get a Liquid Test kit and to run from the Test Strips. The strips are pretty inaccurate and more expensive in the long run. Liquid kit is more reliable and you get far more tests.

Be careful of starfish, they’re carnivorous and tend to go for coral. I’ve had two salt water aquariums and both times I’ve had to rehome my starfish due to it or them going for my feather duster or my coral.... so just be careful!

Em maybe I misunderstood in the video but I thought you might have been mixing up salt water to top off your tank. You should top off evaporated water with fresh water because only the water has left the tank, the salt is still in it. You only need to mix up salt water for doing partial water changes.

Turns out a puppy is easier than a goldfish. I have learned so many things the hard way. I keep fish medicine on hand but it almost never works. I'll have to change brands or something. I gave up on having a tropical tank. No matter how hard I tried one would get sick then everyone died. So now I have a cold water tank with two goldfish, a few guppies and a bushy nose pleco. My big white lionhead is a weird fish I've been treating for swim bladder and constipation for months. She was constipated but she doesn't seem to have swim bladder disease. She just swims upside down sometimes. I have a breeder guppy tank for live food for our animals that eat them, which has an alage bloom that just won't die. I've tried vacuming, removing gravel and cleaning the filter. I would try salt but live plants and guppies don't handle it well. There's a copper treatment but since they're breeders I'm worried about annihilating the babies. As it turns out fish are hard.

Hikari is a great brand generally, used it for plecos, community tanks and cichlids like oscars. But as with all fish make sure you vary types of food and makes sure you have a selection of good pellet foods as variation of food is always great for your fish :) as with most animals.

Em, I appreciate your disclaimer about fishkeeping at the start of the video, but telling people to consult workers at an aquarium store isn't the way to go. Yes, some aquarium stores are fantastic, but a looooot of them are solely focused on making money and can steer inexperienced buyers in the wrong direction for profit. It's much more beneficial to do research online.

Getting the parameters of a coral reef aquarium isn’t all that difficult. The salt, calcium and carbon mixtures you need have very specific mixing directions and mimicking sea water is not that difficult with the right reef aquarium salt mixtures.

What it takes is 1: Time. You need to make sure the nitrate cycle is 100% complete, and the live rock needs to completely cure before this happens, which means having an empty tank that smells like a dead fish sitting in your living room for months before you start stocking it. And corals and fish need to be added slowly. A large tank is more stable, but it can take you up to a year to fully stock it.

2: Dedication. Most chemical tests you do in a freshwater tank like ammonia nitrate pH and chlorine are the same across the aquarium hobby. Once a week should suffice if your tank is large and fully cycled. What you CANNOT skip is a daily check of salinity levels, as evaporation will make your tank saltier. The bigger the tank is, the easier it becomes to keep conditions stable, but this brings you to the third concern of the reef keeping hobby...

3: Money. If you are at a financial point where you can take a $50 bill out of your wallet, flush it down the toilet and not miss it, you’re ready for reef keeping. The filter and lighting that come with a standard pet store aquarium kit will not cut it. You need the best filters you can afford and full-spectrum lighting. Saltwater fish and invertebrates are expensive, and even small coral specimens can go for $75 each. Live rock is easily the most expensive investment, as it typically goes for $10 per lb for the good display quality rock, and you need roughly 1lb per gallon. If you were to try to buy it one piece at a time, you will be cycling your tank for months as each new piece that you add will cause an ammonia spike due to some of the marine organisms that colonized it dying during transport and fouling the water.

If you have the patience and the money to get the right equipment and not rush building your mini ecosystem, this is can be an extremely rewarding hobby. If not, stick to goldfish.

Beautiful tank I’m glad you are into this hobby but maybe I’n the future it’s just a suggestion from my experience Nano tanks are harder than bigger tanks the bigger the easier cause if something happens to the water it will affect rather quickly but if it’s with bigger tank more water and when something wrong happens it will take a bit longer to affect and you have time to fix it faster but once again beautiful tank I can’t wait to see more videos of it ❤️

EM you make me want to actually upload my first Pet-Tube video with every video you make!! I've wanted to talk about the goldfish and betta thing for soooo long! And everything else i've seen. Thank you for being a wonderful influence to your audience. I will do my VERY BEST to be as kind a hard working as you. I love animals, I have knowledge, I am sooo willing to learn more and really make new animal lovers who i can talk to and learn from! You also keep me in college, I am majoring in conservation biology, as a result of "giving up" on vet school....BUT I wouldn't change a thing about my life! I have severe anxiety and depression so the standard for vet school shut me down...but with that i realized there is something more than cat and dogs that i need to contribute to in this world. Animals, wildlife, the beauty of it, is the ONLY thing keeping me alive, and I need to stop worrying and contribute to this community because even if i am not perfect, I will learn. and i love more than anything, learning about a new creature. :) I LOVE YOU EM! I hope you see this, or just like it, I need some motivation, because I know I am intelligent enough to contribute to the animals rights, conservation, wildlife study needs, but i need to stop doubting myself. Thank you and please let me know someone listens. But anyways I love all you guys in the comments, true kindness is loving an animal that has no voice, but we still understand their needs and importance.

If you get any corral weeds as I call them as in any pest enenamy or what ever. The best thing to do is to use a syring and needle filled with pure lemon juce and if you inject it strait into the body of the past it will kill it off instantly without having to fill the tank with chemicals that could damage your fish.

Salt tanks are not for the faint of heart lol. It's a very expensive hobby. Lol my mom has a 130 gal salt tank. Its a lot of work to take care of a salt tank. Lol I personally have a 10 gallon tank for my crayfish and then I have a 20 gallon with a few different fish in it. It is a slow start process. I always see people buying betta fish and their tanks at the same time. You must always cycle a new tank. You will kill ur fish!!

It is an amazing food for sure. Repashy is also good. I find changing up there food is best. It’s also super important to fast them once a week. Too much food will spoil your water, grow tons of algae, and shortens your fishes life. I love a 5+ gallon Betta tank. Not only are they beautiful, but they have amazing personalities. They need more room than the industry portrays. Rescue a Betta today.

Hi Em! I just wanted to say thank you so much for creating a video about fishkeeping that takes care to show and explain just how difficult this hobby can be. I help take care of a marine tank at school and you would not believe how much salt gets let everywhere- it gets crusted all over the lid, light, filters, etc. Like Im talking inch-thick chunks forming on the back of the tank in front of the wall because we cant reach to clean it. Its a bastard to clean up but as long as the salinity of the actual water is ok and everything is fully functional we usually end up just leaving it.

Em once everything establishes in your tank. You definitely need to get a Multicolor Dwarf Angelfish. He/She will be the star of your tank. They're so beautiful and they don't get that big, so they'll be great for your nano.

Em you are one of my favorite YouTubers and I enjoy your content but you really jumped into hard mode with this tank. I know you did a ton research and you are very intelligent but I still remember that betta video you took down and there were some freshwater basics you got completely wrong. Going from that to a saltwater tank (and a nano at that) is more then brave it’s toeing the line of kinda reckless. Regardless, I respect you a lot and I want to see you succeed in this. I’m glad you are consulting people who are experienced in the hobby and I look forward to any updates.
Emzotic
Emzotic - 2 years ago
Paige Mays Hi Paige. Thanks for your feedback and notes. I agree with you on the freshwater video which is why I removed it. Saltwater has certainly been a challenge (as you’ll see next week) and an eye opener, but I 100% believe that even after research and consulting that nobody can grasp what it really means to care for a creature until they actually do. It’s always an ongoing learning process for every animal :)
MintChocolate

I just want to drill into the people in the back who might not have heard. Emzotic mentioned several times the difficulty in running a nano tank. These are NOT beginner setups. It doesn't matter if it's a freshwater tank or a saltwater tank. They're very difficult to look after if you're still learning. I think a 20 to 40 gallon tank is a much better option for beginners. This is not only based on my opinion but also my experience. They're not as expensive as a 200 gallon, they don't take up a lot of space but they still allow for a learning curve. That's so important.

For any one curious that tank is part of the Fluval Evo series. it comes in three sizes but isn't the best tank for everyone . The back filter area of this tank is a pain to work in if you have large hands.

Hikari food is okay but its best to do research what food is best for your fish or inverts. Cobalt and Fluval also make fantastic foods. Food buying comes down to knowing what your fish needs.

Finally Betta splendids will live from 4-7 years if properly maintained, come over to reddit.com/r/bettafish for more info.

My suggestion which is probably something you already do, keep a schedule! Make a white board or something for when you last checked water quality, who you fed, if anything looks wrong. At my school we had a bunch of tanks to take care of and the most annoying thing was when we needed to know if the fish had eaten or had a water change and they didn't know.
Emzotic
Emzotic - 2 years ago
Wonderful suggestion!! I don’t do this for my aquatics, but I have health records for my birds, mammals and reptiles, and feeding records for my snakes x
Sydney s

Also, maybe set up a line graph showing how your water quality is so you can see the way it goes down and up and predict where it will go next. Google spreadsheets are good as well for predictions of cost.

I don’t know anything about saltwater tanks but my bettas love hikari bio gold, and my corycats love the hikari bottom feeder tablets or whatever they call them. I love this video a lot, if I started with a saltwater I would want to do a smaller tank and focus on corals and inverts and it’s nice to see that it is doable (with care)!

Shaun Ragasa - 2 years ago
Hi Em! Before getting into the fishkeeping hobby, I did tons of research into the different aspects of it - one being what food to get for my fish friends, and I just wanted to let you know that Hikari is generally a favorite for many fishkeepers to use (I only use Hikari brand myself)! Compared to other brands, Hikari is really good quality filled with good ingredients and is a reliable brand that you can find in many stores! I'd recommend it to other beginner fishkeepers, too! ❤
MaestroCygni

You should really explane the cycle prosses .. people are going to think you can just slap together a nano aquarium with coral and fish .... "/ also the lighting needed for coral or if your using a skimmer or a calcium reactor ... your missing a lot In the video ..
ashley godfrey
ashley godfrey - 2 years ago
Yuki Alex Nakai it depends on the type of coral. I just didn't want people to see her do it and think they can just slap together a nano tank with coral and fish . And everything dies .. that's all not trying to hate or anything

ashley godfrey yeah...so she said to do your own research! Anyone could go on to talk about all the details but that would be long and tedious to watch. Plus it's really the creators decision to include or not include don't you think?

You could instead, tell us what kind of lights people should get or how long one should cycle the tank for people who would like to know
