Nano Reef Aquarium Part II: Aquascaping

Welcome to part II of Tidal Gardens' nano reef video series. Nano reef tanks are a popular fixture in the saltwater aquarium hobby. This three-part series will cover some of the issues regarding this form of reefkeeping. In part I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpJPWjMuGjo), we will be talking about refurbishing a used acrylic tank to be converted to a nano reef. Here in part II, we will discuss equipment choices and thoughts on aquascaping small aquariums. In part III, it's time to have some fun and dream up different concepts for stocking the reef tank. Check out http://www.tidalgardens.com for information or if you want to buy corals for your reef tank. Tip: Choose rocks that aren't too flat. Flat rocks are hard to place and usually don't look good.

Hey. I was wondering what kind of sand did you use and what do you prefer. starting a tank with live sand and live rock or just live sand or just live rock or just start with everything dead? This will help me decide what to use to start my tank. i just dont want to get hitch hiker in my tank just cuz i used something live in there. Thank you

you should go with live sand and dead rock

pro tip. if you are going to put fish and inverts in your tank that imbed in the sand make sure you put the rock in first and then the sand so they dont get crushed or a base rock shifts and a top rock flops off and shatters your beauty. sand is second!!

+dustin mcdonald then poor the mixed water over the rocks and over about 2 months your sandbed levels out. i also did mine from scratch. dead everything and a piece of raw tiger shrimp to start the ammonia cycle. 3-6 months you have a well established beginner for the basics like soft corals and damsils are a hearty fish to start off with until your tank cycles a few times

Skimmers are not necessary, but their ability to "trap" nitrates and other nutrients is extremely useful, as you know in the real reefs, nitrates are literally unmeasurable. Many corals will grow best when there are no nitrates in the water, which is why just having a filter (which holds beneficial bacteria), merely helps to convert toxic ammonia from waste into less toxic nitrates, but does not remove them. So having a skimmer will make maintenance much easier, but isn't absolutely needed. Refugiums can also be helpful in tank maintenance, because macro algae utilizes nitrates, phosphates and other undesirables into fuel for their growth, effectively reducing the nitrate count in the water. However, they are not perfect, and require a close eye to make sure nothing goes sexual and spreads to your display tank (although this is rare). Also, refuges can release nutrients back into the tank if the macro algae starts to die off for any reason.

No, skimmers are not needed, I prefer fuges because they aren't ugly.

do i need a protein skimmer for my 15gallon with only 2 clowns and how long does the nitrogen cycle take when starting with base rock??

Than, Thanks for these videos. You do great work both in the tanks and with the videos. The most professional on YouTube! Thanks also for spelling your name! I've watched all your videos and every time you said your name I started wondering what it actually was. :) Now we all know!

It might have been a sea clear 'system' tank from the looks from it. But who knows how old it is because it was bought used

That mic issue was bothering me for ages. I think I have it fixed for the next video. It's a software thing. The hardware is practically professional.

Love your vids. Keep it up and be top 5 reefer chanel for sure. One thing. There seems to be a lot of "noise" when you speak. Maybe invest in a new mic or something.

Looking good! i made the mistake of resting some rock on the back wall of my biocube, and i am suffering from it with some dead spots. another powerhead will fix it though, because i do not want to move the rocks around since i have tons of caves for my fish. check out my videos on my channel and tell me what you think!
