Bro, easily the best reefer 450 setup I've seen. You make mine look so embarrassing! Keep it up bro, and keep up the attitude in your videos - much better then the sterile videos other reefers produce.

Hi nice tank which ati module are you using is it the 6 or 8 tube? If you've got the 8 tube do you think the 6x80w tube module will be ok for this tank thanks

Vodka dosing will working nicely to help reduce your nitrates and phosphates if the bio pellets cause you cyano.

Thanks shardy please keep your videos coming they are very interesting. I will post a video of my set up soon when every thing is in place. I have spent a lot of money on this build and it looks amazing. Crazy how much you can spend on this hobby.

Could you let me no how long it took for your skimmer to brake in?
jameshutch1000
jameshutch1000 - 8 years ago
Hi shardy I love the new video's very interesting.
I have a question I have got my self a deltec sc 2060 on my 350 l reefer tank. I see you have one. In one of your video's you you say the deltec is over rated by ten maybe twenty times for your tank. But this skimmer is rated for 375 gallons my tank is a 90 gallon so this is only over powered on my tank up to four times. I hope this makes sense. Is this correct or am I wrong. Do you think this is way over powered for my tank?

shardinio
shardinio - 8 years ago
+jameshutch1000 Yes, you are right I was guessing and talking out of my arse on that one! 4 times is right and in my opinion is definitely not over powered for the tank. The more skimming the better!

Why have you went off the idea of a deep sand bed? Im thinking of doing one in my reefspace 900 but im unsure.
shardinio
shardinio - 8 years ago
+James Macdonald It really depends but at the moment Bio pellets seem to be handling the nitrates better and because I am all out sps I want 0 nitrates.

So would you still recommend a deep sand bed? How did you find you got on with it. Excited to see your video updates!!
shardinio
shardinio - 8 years ago
+James Macdonald I never went off it, Just always looking to try new and better methods. I hear and see good things on bio-pellets and as my dsb was primarily for nitrates, I thought I would give this a try.

Can I just ask you how you resolved the noisy durso problem. I have mine set a tad higher in the weirs than you (maybe an inch or so) the RHS weir fills up over the durso outlet but the LHS one just seems to slurp at the water instead of letting it cover it over so it is incredibly noisy...pluuuuuus the water dropping into the weir is noisy at both sides too. Did you have this problem?
If you could squeeze an answer in somewhere between the footings and the first fix I would be eternally grateful :-)

Are you using the dimmable ATI Sunpower or the original model? I am beginning a 38 x 24 x 16 (inches) build. I am going to go with the 36" ATI but not sure if I should go with the regular or dimmable. And what bulbs would you recommend? Thanks.

Nice holding tank. Just remember that if you feed your tank to much the bio pellets, wont keep nitrates at zero. It has been proven that bio pellets can sometimes cause cyano problems, although that is not the cases in every tank.
shardinio
shardinio - 8 years ago
+TheFishTank Doc. I am not following rule books, I am pushing limits and testing myself. I would not know if the pellets handle all the phosphates fully  because I am running both.My research showed that these pellets are not the best for phosphates. There is alot of waste but it must be being handled as after 1 month of this kind of feeding you would surely see nitrates and phosphates and I do not. You can look at my progress and detailed log and diary on aquatic log just search for shardys holding tank. It has everything I have done from the start (no exceptions!) more videos to come regarding the subject ;) one uploaded already ;)

Make a video and lets see the size of these cubes, and anyting else your feeding.
There is a rule which doesn't always work of 1 Inch of fish per 5 gallons of tank water. This of cause is only a rough guide and doesn't work for every fish or tank. I have 20 inches of fish in my 100g but have had 30+ inches with no algae problems.
So if 1 cube feeds 20 inches of fish in my tank, them 10 cubes would feed 200 inches of fish!!!. Under the rule 200. inches of fish would need to be in a 1,000g (3,700litres).
So you are feeing enough food in your 450 litre tank for a fully stocked 3,700 litre tank. with 100 2 inch fish in it.
If you have said you are feeding 2-4 cubes a day, that is believable, but 10 or even 8 is not!!!.
If one cube can feed 1 yellow tang, 1 fairy wrasse, 5 cromis, 2 clown, 2 goby, 2 damsel in my tank. then 10 cubes would feed 10* this many fish!!. That would + a lot of waste.
I see you are using bio pellets and G.F.O. Do the pellets not remove enough phosphate on their own.
shardinio
shardinio - 8 years ago
+TheFishTank Doc. I would love to see your calculations as your maths seems more like wild guess work. Try stepping out of your comfort zone, push yourself and learn through real experience! I know tanks that have been feeding this much food for years and their skimmers are much worse than mine. "no tank can ever handle 10+ cubes of food," If you are honestly saying that then you are clearly clueless about this hobby. " I know you can't compare tanks" then why are you doing it? . "Shardys 450 litre (120g not including sump)" Water volume is not relevant to this. Making sure you don't have uneaten food and a proper filtration system and maintenance is what counts. In fact, less water volume makes it easier for my skimmer to strip all the organics out of the water. Its called having an efficient system and method.

+shardinio that's a good skimmer !
shardinio
shardinio - 8 years ago
+FARM BOY REEF yep, there sure is a lot of waste but It all gets dealt with nicely ;) My skimmer is rated at almost 5 times the tank volume and I clean it every day. there is some serious gunk in after 1 day. If I continue with this regime, how long do you think it will be before nitrates rise?
shardinio
shardinio - 8 years ago
+TheFishTank Doc.. Did I say 10? ooohhps, I meant to say 8 cubes a day! ;)
FARM BOY REEF
FARM BOY REEF - 8 years ago
+TheFishTank Doc. Yeah I agree. 10 cubes I feed my tangs 3 Cubes and pellets . I have a 220 and 15 fish . For his 120 gallon half size of mine that's a lot. That's a lot of fish in one tank. There would be a lot of wast
TheFishTank Doc.
TheFishTank Doc. - 8 years ago
I don't think the maths works out on Shardys tank. I have 15 fish, split between 2 tanks. 13 in my 100g and 2 in my 32g fish only. That = about the same water volume as Shardys 450 litre (120g not including sump). I feed just 1 cube of mysis a day. I know you can't compare tanks, filtration, or fish, but no tank can ever handle 10+ cubes of food, as shardy has said he feeds his his tank. Although my fish are a lot smaller than most of his, If I can happily feed my yellow tang, pink fairy wrasse, 2 clown, 3 damsel, 5 chromis, 2 gobies, coral beauty, 1 cube per day, then 10 cubes, would feed 10 times that, so 10 yellow tangs, 50 chromis 30 damsels, and so on.
Not sure any 120g tank could handle that much food, or that many fish!!!!

Excellent freaking news ... did wonder if you'd ditched and ran... lol

One thought ... don't fluidise carbon ... stuff some foam on it and keep it still ... have it full to the brim its cheap enough if you buy it in bulk. You can research it to death but I'll save you an acre of time doing so ... just keep it still and it'll do it's job better.

You've got a cool family ... Mine would look at me like I was deranged if I suggested drilling holes through walls for water changes ... lol

+Steve Leggett cheers pal, I am using NaHCO3 (sodium hydrogen carbonate) for alkalinity and CaCl2 x 2H2O (calcium chloride dehydrate) for calcium and I mix them in rodi water and auto dose. I bought them from chemical manufacturers online. Much cheaper than off the shelf aquarium products.
