I just used resin from Home Depot. Mix it and spread it on foam with brush. Then while wet throw sand on it and let dry. Make sure you get the mix right. I didn't and it was like gummy. Never really hardened. You can scrap it off easy when gooey. Just apply more and throw sand on. Hard to screw up.

What about the nasty stagnant water that is going to get trapped between the glass and back of the back ground? Is that going to be a problem? Unless you put silicone all the way around and prevented the water from getting behind the background I would be concerned with nasty stuff growing in there. I does look good though.

How did you remove the salt crystals from the foam before glueing the sand on?
BTUFF MAGAZINE
BTUFF MAGAZINE - 7 years ago
Spray it with hose. It desolves off. But don't do that part. Just throw sand on the resin.

This is good for a freshwater tank, right?
Just wanna make sure because my angelfish, Buddy (named after the elf when i got him for christmas) grew and needs a bigger tank. I decided to set up a 45 gallon corner tank and make it look like a saltwater tank, but make it freshwater. I was looking for a cool background to do.
Joe M.
Joe M. - 7 years ago
It will be fine for fresh water... just make sure you let the product cure... silicone cure. So no off gases are released into your water.

You could actually throw the sand right on top of the foam right after you apply the foam apply sand on it make sure ypu put plent of it till you can no longer see the foam. Wait 24 hours and shake the extra sand off.

I love spray foam!!  did you seal the backside with resin and no sand?  has that foam been proven like not to leak anything nasty if exposed directly to saltwater?
BTUFF MAGAZINE
BTUFF MAGAZINE - 7 years ago
There's nothing to leak. It's inside tank. Glue to down to glass with silicone tho. Foam floats.

Hi guys ...use the Bondo product you find it in the auto dep at Canadian Tire. It smells alot(smell goes away after it dries). Quick tip the cap contains a bit more than 2oZ of fluid so mesure 2 oZ with a cup, and then its 10 drop od the hardener per oZ, so 20 drops for your 2 oZ; mix well, it stick but it works after its cured for 24 h, no danger. Ok when you paint it on your foam , sprinkle some sand or like me crush corals to give a coarse texture. The reason is primarely because some of your cleaning crew will much on the algae growing on them , but by doing so will also release some foam, the tuxedo urchin simply eats the foam and dies from it. Check my video on it, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqRymdW0gSE...

You guys, don't use salt crystals, it disolves.
And if your looking for more detail, join Alymer's Saltys on facebook.
You have fantastic ideas, and I love your video.

Was the resin just for the sand to stick to or is it used to seal the foam completely on both sides?
