There are a large amount of great reefs in the world still. Amazing colour, and life, everything you see on TV isn’t factual. Belize, Hawaii, Florida, Bahamas, Nicaragua, and so on just to name a few I have been to are incredible. Please just be accurate with statements. Just because you saw one doesn’t mean the entire world is done. Sorry, don’t mean to be critical just be careful with what you say if you don’t truly know what it is you are saying.

Just beautiful. I had a cheapo 10 gal fresh water aquarium as a teen long time ago. Thinking about getting back into it. Just amazing things people are doing. Question: is it possible for hoobyists and aqua experts to collectively save/store/breed or whatever as many corals as possible, so if the wild natural reefs go extinct we can rebuild them somehow. Just a thought I had watching all these hobbyist videos. Good stuff indeed. So cool.

Don't like that tank. Would get more rocks and instead of LED"s I'd get T5's with a sunset/sunrise feature. I'd also designate one area for SPS only. The whole tank is a waste of money and time. It's not well thought through and just to show off.

who ever is running the camera is horrible at it. learn how to focus!!! and why only shoot in 720? you like what you like, so not tripping on that, but don't spread ridiculous rumors that live rock is seen less and less. live rock is being use just as it always has. finally, lids on a reef tank? don't worry, i won't comment further, because i'm out. this is a horrible setup.

Thank you for the input on my old Reef Tank.
I enjoy the criticisms of this build quite a bit.. Considering I built the tank and subsequently cut it apart and threw it away I guess I agreed it was a horrible setup(only have 138,000 views now). I did not know having lid's on a reef tank is bad i apologize.. I will know for next time that i can't run lids on my reef for some magical reason..

I wouldn't mind having a educated conversation about pro's and con's on a totally anecdotal theory but the intolerance in you comment is just a turn off.

that part in the center that jogs out from the rest of the tank ruined it. the view is obstructed all you see are the seems and it makes it look like it's 3 tanks pushed up against each other. that is literally the worst shaped tank I've ever seen. but I love your aquascape and coral selection and the bright clean sandbed

Not close to $900 a month, I got two tanks, about 240 gallon in total and it cost me about $50-60 a month in average for them both including pumps, light, salt & food. All pumps today are pretty much low level engines and combined with LED the electric bill isnt a problem. Same with water, a big tank doesn need the same type of waterchange (as in cost of salt) as a smaller tank, I think ive spent about 50 bucks on salt the past 6 months.
My guess based on his size and amout of lights from maxspect he have, maybie 100-150 bucks max.

And sure, its a very expensive "decoration" to startup but for me as a reef maniac (and we dont have this type of wildlife in nature in Sweden) its worth it. You need to have a love for it because it will take you alot of hours a week in maintenance but the feeling is amazing when you go from something emty as a aquarium, and months later is a world of fish, crabs, bacteria, stones and corals.

All people are different, some like dogs, some like cars and others just love fish and reefs.

water,electric,fish food will cost at least $900 a month for this crazy hobby. There at least several couple hundred watts motors and heater and lights running 24 hours a day. I rather have brand new cars every year for $900 payment. Having a dog is more like family than decoration(fish tank).

That All-in-one aspect looks like a pain to deal with though, you'd have to climb up onto the tank to get to that area, sure the skimmer cup can be removed but any work done in the "sump" area seems like it would be restrictive as all hell.

I agree 100%.. It looked good on paper when I designed it but as I built the tank I knew it would not work.. This is no big deal as I have scrape it. This tank was just a fun project and i am on to the next build :)

You should add a mangrove swamp to one side of the tank - this would add to the natural look!

Right on, wow! Question....if you were trying to set up a sumpless 20 gallon nano reef,with no sand bed...how many pounds minimum of live rock would be absolute minimum you think?

+Oswald Reef not enough to fit in a 20G try and fill as much as you can, keeping distance from the glass. Go for 20L or 20W, not 20H

3:38-4:04 ?? There are lots of coral reefs that are not what they used to be, but anyone who's been to the Solomons should have seen some amazing reefs. Lots of aquarium reefers don't really know what a real reef looks like.

To me, it would look 100 times better without the jut out in the middle. It just distorts the view and messes with the continuity of the tank.

killswitchh I would like how it juts out if that glue didn't distort 50% of the side view. But if you look in the back I think he has some reactors or a sump behind the middle tank, if he lined them all up there would just be like 3 feet from the back of the tank to the wall lol. I feel like he wouldn't be able to do anything differently without SOMEBODY complaining XD

killswitchh the pop out is beautiful to me. all you see is big long rectangles so it was cool to see him at a different feature to it to not make it just so basic. love it

I could have built it with out the jut in the center.. I chose not too to do this as I liked the way it look. I did however start disliking this tank and is why I cut it apart.
Andy there is a jut in the back.
I will just build a new one :)

No way in hell would you want two pieces seemed together without the "jut". That would be even less structurally sound than a single long sheet.

+FishAntsPlantsAndDave AFAIK he built this tank, and a 16 foot long piece of acrylic is not exactly something for even the best DIYer to handle at home. So the question is do you leave a jut, or do you leave a visible seam?

+olemanwinter1 theres a reason why acrylic tanks come with the tops mostly connected except for sections cut out for access. this tank does in fact have those connections and access holes...making that center piece kind of necessary. i can see what youre saying with a single piece of acrylic being too long without anything in the center, but this thing even has the black rims on it...

Still not enough I'm afraid because the force/pressure is coming from inside. So internal bracing wouldn't solve the problem.

That's necessary for the structural integrity of the tank.

It's just like a foundation footing. The longer you go without cross bracing or an angle the more structural strength you lose.
