Should I get an RODI machine for my freshwater tanks or does it only really make a difference for salt water?

CoralFish12g I have a lot of questions... 1. How do I know chlorine levels?
2.which membrane are you referring to?(I just know I need RODI and this makes RODI...)
3. How do I know when to change the carbon cartridge?
CoralFish12g
CoralFish12g - 7 years ago
The most important cartridge to change is the carbon cartridge. The carbon is responsible for removing the chlorine. If chlorine is able to make its way to the membrane it can damage the membrane. If the chlorine level is 1ppm the carbon will filter 1500 gallons of total water, at the very least, before it needs to be replaced. If the chlorine level is 2ppm that number gets cut in half to 750 gallons of total water. The sediment cartridge should be changed every other carbon cartridge. This one is also semi-transparent, so you can see when it starts to get dirty/clogged. If you’re keeping up on the sediment and carbon changes then the membrane can easily last you up to 2 years. The DI is pretty self-explanatory. Thanks for that support!

I have some more questions about that product how easy is it to get the refills for it since they don't look the size of the Standard carbon blocks or sediment filter they look to be almost the same size as the membrane how easy is it to get the replacement cartridges? Seems like a great product 4 purposes of travel and need of it but for at home I like to have my more permanent set up since a lot of my tubes for the actual machine go through the wall and is always being put into a 44 gallon brute trash can and also when you have to change the canisters out what you be another concern for me

Can you tell me if you think I could use the same RODI system you used in college at home? I rent and don't have a lot of space. I just upgraded from my 6 gallon nano to a 32 gallon nano Coralife BioCube all-in-one system.

Another system I was looking at was the:

Nice RO/DI filter! I've seen some on eBay for about $90, but considering this one is portable & easy to install & change cartridges w/out tools, I'd say the $112 is worth it! BTW, there is a 4th option other than committing the ultimate sin of tap water & buying or making RO/DI water. That is to use a medium quality filter. For example, the PUR Maxion filter costs about $35 & has a DI but no RO stage. It removes lead or silicates from your water & my refractometer measures the filtered water as 1.000 just like distilled / RODI water --- but you probably want to add a tiny bit of dechlorinator b/c it says "reduces chlorine" on the package - not a guarantee that 100% of the chlorine is gone. Don't get me wrong! I'm sure it is not as good as true RO/DI water! But, but if you only have a FOWLR tank, or maybe only Mushroom Coral, & you're on a really tight budget, it may be good enough. Even with a FOWLR tank, if you have really expensive/delicate fish, you should probably be more cautious, but if you just have a couple of saltwater mollies or a clown fish, it may be ok. Of course, it also depends how bad your tap water is. My tap water is about 1.005 specific gravity out of the tap & I think it just has some silicate minerals & the chlorine they added. The worse the tap water, the harder you have to filter it, of course.

Eddie Allen same as freshwater. take temp of main tanks water. get a bucket and fill it with water close to tanks temperature. add dechlorinator to it. put a spare heater in it set to tanks temp, and mix salt in with powerhead or stir by hand.

I just got a nano cube from my buddy. it's got a lot of that good red shit growing on the glass (very new to the hobby). He informed me that he just topped it off with regular water like ice mountain (undistilled). There is a soft coral that looks to be in good health but a monti that doesn't look too good. What can I do to become comfortable putting with buying corals. I'd like to start a new tank but I got this set up for free and would like to give it a good chance. Any help I can get or concerns I should have would be great. Thanks!

I actually have the same unit myself and I really like it. It's rated for 100 GPD and according to the manual they recommend changing the sediment and carbon cartridges every six months and the RO membrane every 24 months. This all depends on how high the TDS of your water source as well as how much water you need. You replace the DI resin when the color changes completely from blue to brown.

If you plan to use the inline adaptor in place of the hose adaptor, I suggest tossing the included one and getting a better one from the hardware store. (they're sold as ice maker adopters) The one that came with mine was designed to attach to the compression fitting rather than after the sink's shut off valve. Long story short, fitting cross threaded, had to buy replacement, compression fitting leaked, had to go buy pipe dope and ended up having to dope the F@%# out of it. Wasted half a day thanks to it.

Other than that, it works great and is easy to set up and use. I recommend it, just watch out for that cheap in line fitting.

illstplaya84 Hi, I usually start replying to comments after the video has been up for 24 hours, so that I can see and reply to the majority of the questions. This unit will do 100 GPD and the media will last you for 1-3 years so it will pay for itself pretty quickly considering you'll be in the hobby for a while. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Jonathan Lee
Jonathan Lee - 7 years ago
B Russell honestly using tap water is fine. Some People do that without any problems. But some do say it it causes more algae growth which I find is true. I used bottle ro/di I buy from the store for water changes but I use filtered RO water from my drinking water machine at home. A good Ro/Di machine purifies water to be 0ppm up to 1ppm. But my machine at home only purifies it up to 5 or 6ppm cause its not a ro/Di machine its just a RO machine. But the only problems I've had using tap water was algae. Except for one time I did a water change with filtered drinking tap water and realised my fish were sick and looked like they were dying. I did an immediate water change the next day with rodi water and the problem was fixed. So I guess its at your own risk. Depends on tank size too
