If you are still around...(last reponse I see was 5 months ago)...what glue are you using in the video? Thanks!

How is dragons breath? Does it help with nitrates and phosphates? Are there any cons?
Jimmy Lee Lard
Jimmy Lee Lard - 7 years ago
Snapback Vape I wish I had more scientific evidence, but I'm just going to make a hunch and say minimal at best. It's probably best used for aesthetics and as a food supply for tangs. You would probably have better luck with chaeto, but it won't be as aesthetically pleasing. Thanks for watching!

What is the minimum salinity Dragon's breath (Halymenia sp.) can live in?
Jimmy Lee Lard
Jimmy Lee Lard - 7 years ago
wcdeich4 The suggested so is 1.023 - 1.026. My guess is it can go slightly lower. Thank so much for watching!

Why don't u just tie it with fishing line or rubber band? And what if the fish eat the glue? Pls reply

Hi Johanan Micaiah!  Sorry it's been a few days...lots of travelling lately.

For the red macroalgae I was attaching in the video, fishing line or rubber bands would not help as that macro is EXTREMELY slow to attach (if at all) and would probably end up floating all over the tank.  Some of the other macros in that tank (like the two varieties of Caulerpa) attach very easily as they have runners (root-like runners called rhizomes) that attach VERY quickly.  I would not recommend fishing line because if too tight, it will cut through the fronds or stems and it too loose, they will be floating all over your tank.  You can even put them between two rocks and they will like be attached in 1-2 days.

As for the glue...though I seldom kept fish in that tank (usually just to separate a pregnant, sick, or misbehaving fish), I used the same glue in my reef tanks and never had any issues.  In fact, it's quite common in the hobby.

Thanks for your question and hope that helps!

Is all your macro glued to ruble? I'm setting up a Seahorse tank and wanted to add macro to the scape. I was trying to figure out if I need to add refugium mud or not. Your tank looks great by the way... Thanks

Hi i have a 75 G display refugium with Lined seahorses ( Hippocampus erectus) The caulerpa prolifera is yes very much appreciated but its a gorgonian that they preffer the most  Pinnigorgia flava , as its has a very sturdy anchoring point and soft branch. Your water can't go over 77oF. Because sea horses are very susceptible to infections, 76-78 bacterial infection, 79-and up viral infections. So i keep mine at 74-75 and my tanks are all good. Corals flourish and grow no problem and the fishes are happy. I also have 37 species of macro's.  By the way those glue are made for the industry and cause no damages to any inverts, fish or corals or macro's , totally safe. great video , by the way, thank. i've added in my list.

Hi Rayville308!  Sorry I'm just now responding...I was away on vacation (much needed).  Thanks for your comment!  I've never had a seahorse tank, but I understand that caulerpa (prolifera) seems to be a must have.  I have only glued macroalgae that doesn't attach on it's own or attaches too slowly.  For instance, I have never had to glue caulerpa prolifera because they root VERY quickly on everything from rocks...to the sandbed...to the walls.  I would probably do caulerpa prolifera and then add something in the red color for a nice contrast (maybe red grape caulerpa or gracilaria).  Again, I'm no seahorse expert by far, but I would research those options for starters.  Enjoy and let me know if you post a video of your seahorse tank.  I would love to see it!

BTW JLR I was wondering if the glue would leave some chemicals that can poison inhabitants? Have you ever tried testing the water parameters right after and what was the results? I guess because it's just like a dot of glue and it cures right away so you never had problems with it.

Thanks JLR, I had a small dragons breath plants before and all my tangs ate it and nothing was left after 5 days. Hate it when it happened because I quarantined it for a month. Anyway, it gave me an idea that if I was growing a lot of it in a refugium, then I can spare some on the display tank as food for the herbivores while I will be gone for 5 days and use an automatic feeder for pellet food. Back then I was using lead weights and now I know better because of your video.

Thanks Ron Jeremy! I am not stuck on any one brand of glue (get it?). I use whatever's on sale or available, but I do find that a thicker, gel-type glue is easier to manage because it doesn't run all over the place. The gel glues are also less likely to leave you with two fingers glued together! Super Krazy Glue, Instant Glue...or any off-brand!

Hi TheCgk1, I'm no expert but here are my thoughts based on my experience. The macro algae should help to remove phosphates and nitrates from from your aquarium, but won't speed up the actual cycle much. The good thing is that because they don't produce nitrites or ammonia, they shouldn't slow it down either. They should, however, help to reduce (not eliminate) diatom blooms and algae blooms that can get a little ugly during cycling. Best of luck to ya!!!

It's day 2 of my cycle can you tell me when I should add some macro algae

Yep...pretty easy too...much easier than my reef tanks (even easier than my freshwater tank). You should give it a shot!
