your bio media will work way better if you give it more air. Bacteria need lots of air to grow and process waste

Your both right ! Coverting nitrogenous waste takes several types of bacteria both aerobic and anaerobic (with O2 and w/o O2) aka "the nitrogen cycle" . Ammonia. nitrite. nitrate. gas (or water changes)... ;)

denitrification happens without oxigen aka air .... denitrifying bacteria live in your rock or underneath your sandbed were almost no oxigen exist

Hi How much siporax would you recommend for a 380 litre tank thanks

If you put a strong power head in that media tank you'll see good results.

muffemod - Nope sorry...creating moderate to extreme flow through the media decreases denitrification.

Your aquarium looks awesome. I got a 250 corner bow front and not much room for filtration underneath the aquarium. I'm looking to get as much filtration under there as possible. Glad to have seen your set up!! Thanks. Peace!!!!

Great setup! Would you please advise as to what the lanthanum mix you use consists of exactly?
TxSurfChaser
TxSurfChaser - 7 years ago
Orly G - the Lanthanum Chloride I was using was 99.99% pure. I used .50 - 1.0 ML per 140/G. Better to start super slow, test, and understand it. It has a delayed reaction. "Never" dose daily. Do one dose and wait at least 3-4 days. Then you will understand the effects. Test PO4 with Hanna ULR and also test ur ALK as it can deplete it.

your filtration reminds me of a fish only setup... what about growing the other type of bacteria.. the one that turns nitrate to a gas...

y not get the back tank and grow micro alge. it work better in my mind than what ever that other stuff is...

bryan senulis - right now I'm running pretty much without water changes. If I do water changes, I like to do smaller more frequent water changes. Like 10% every week. This reduces the amount of stress on the system and keeps the tank more stable.

My tank is yung aswell...about 4 months after a long cycle...used dry rock .. about a month ago i added some algie and seems to be growing well...but if i dont clean tank it grows gha after a couple weeks.. i should do more water changes i guess...how often do u change water and what%...

bryan senulis- Macro algae is a great method of nutrient export to remove unwanted NO3 & PO4 and provide a place for pods to populate. The macros can also produce/ release amino acids, sugars, & vitamins that are beneficial to the system. Siporax has great denitrification abilities and houses tons of benificial bacteria. For now (young system) I use Lanthanum Chloride and GFO for PO4 reduction and let the Siporax take care of the nitrates. I can never grow algae well in a new reef. However, as the tank matures, I'll certainly be growing more Marcos for their unique benefits.

Sub'd! Have you noticed any merit in the rumors that the marine pure product leaches aluminum badly? Just curious. Thanks! I'll be checking out more of your videos for sure

RealWorldReefing- there's a lot of speculation, but I've never had issues. I've been using it for nearly 10 years. I think the amount is very small if any. Nothing to worrying about. Many people use the media without issues. BRS has a video out about it too.
