Reef Tank Aquascape

Its been one year now running a reef tank and we decided it was time for a change. We spent the evening doing a totally new aquascape on the tank and it was well worth it. Let me know if you think its better than before? we are very happy with it ;)

Nicely done! More interesting than stacked walls of coral and rock, lots of channels for fish to swim through. also allows for future growth of corals. When you go diving or snorkeling this resembles more of what it looks like in the ocean. Great job!

Thank you for making it look and function more naturally. Fish seem to be swimming more relaxed. Better water flow. wonder if you added a phosphate reactor. Look at that Golden angel swim in and out, so nice.

cant remember but it is posted on a previous video. Its around 6 foot wide
shardinio
shardinio - 11 years ago
I bought it in sheets from my lfs and cant remember the brand, its getting coralline on it but doubt it will ever get completely covered. as far as fixing goes it was a little tricky as the damn stuff floats! I had to use a quick setting underwater glue (which wasn't cheap! and cant remember the brand) I then had to wedge it in place with some magnets that fitted perfectly but it set in about 20 mins I think. was good stuff ;)

Shardy, what fake rockwork did you use to cover your overflows? Will that get covered in coralline algae? Was it easy to fix?

Hi, love this look of your tank so much better than your previous aquascape you can hear it in your voice that you're much happier too. I've been watching your videos over the past 6/7 months and loved all of them. I've kept fish for years and last year decided after having a lovely Cichlid tank that marine was really what I've wanted all along. So i'm a month on now and just added clean up crew who have done a great job. Your tank is an inspiration to people in the hobby so keep the vids coming

Hi and yes you are right, I forgot to mention that i put algae rings on my glass a few times a week also. I meant that i dont feed any frozen foods like brine or misis which are very annoying to prepare.
Ben Brannigan
Ben Brannigan - 11 years ago
Stunning tank shardi, we're setting up an upgrade of just a bit larger in size. You say you only feed flake, and although the flake does contain some derivative of plant matter, for tangs and angels, the mainstay of their diet needs to be algae, algae sheets, it's cheap enough, and for the fish to be as healthy as possible and thus live as long a life as possible, then you want to be feeding algae sheets to them, on a regular basis, 5 or so times a week, we personally, feed algae sheets daily.
shardinio
shardinio - 11 years ago

Hi I am not as familiar with this method but there is a local aquarium near me which does this on their reef tank very well. They are called the Abyss and based in stockport in manchester uk. You can look them up and email or call them and they will advise you on the proper set up. sorry i cant be of more help

I already use a Sun Sun canister filter and hang on top filter in my existing freshwater. would i be able to use the same if i convert it to marine tank. wherever i ready they say canister filter is Nitrate factory, thats why i was skeptical about using it. I will be having fish only or with some anemone's. its illegal to have corals here. Incase i am using a canister filter and a protien skimmer 4 a fish only tank with say the number of fishes you have. what should be the maintenance schedule.
shardinio
shardinio - 11 years ago
cheers bud!
shardinio
shardinio - 11 years ago
I dont think a sump is needed but you will still need room under the tank or somewhere to accomodate some sort of canister filter and you could need a chiller depending on the temperature where you live. A really good canister filter should do it as i have seen succesfull reef tanks using this method without a protien skimmer. You will need some good powerheads to keep the flow up in the tank
Johny vinoth xavier
Johny vinoth xavier - 11 years ago
Hi one question. I would like to convert my fresh water to a marine aquarium, but I would not be able to accommodate a sump as there is no space beneath my aquarium. Could you please let me know what other best option I have for filtration.

Wow that looks great fella, covering the weirs has gave the tank so much more depth. New scape looks great as do your corals but for for me its your fish selection I love and I'll be adding some of them to my tank in the future. You have a beautiful reef there fella well done.

thanks man, I shot all my old videos with a nikon d7000 which i just sold and the last video and the one that i am just uploading is shot on my new canon 5d mark iii. The video that i am uploading used a 100mm macro lens and a 24-70mm zoom for all the wider non detailed shots. Its not cheap though but photography/ videography is one of my other many hobbies so i dont mind paying for something that I get alot of use out of.

im still undecided about water changes really. still have the awc but have gone as much as 3 months without one and the tank has been fine. I mainly have done them to try and correct the tank when it is unbalanced with alkalinity and have still not got the perfect regime for dosing calc and alk. The tank has pretty high flow which is why i cant keep lps very well. i got the rock cover from my lfs and cant remember the brand name sorry.

Well I cant believe its been a year already!!! Really like the new look. To be honest the last layout didn't work for me personally, I felt there was tons of wasted space..
