Reef Tank Ozone - Crystal Clear Water in The Marine Aquarium using a ozone generator

Ozone is an amazing advanced way to take your aquarium to the next level. Ozone has many benefits for your marine aquarium including providing crystal clear water, reducing smells, breaking down coral toxins, breaking down organics and many possible advantages such as improved skimming and a possible PH boost. Now these benefits can come at a cost. Ozone "can" break down your skimmers or reactor plastics if its not rated for ozone. Ozone in large quantities can be dangerous to your tank inhabitants and can be unhealthy for you! If you are going to use ozone use cation and do so after properly educating your self. today video barely starches the surface into my journey of ozone. If you do plan on implementing a similar system do your research and remember Less is more! I plan on doing a more in depth video on ozone once i can conduct some more test and verify some of my theory's! stay tuned :) -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Vertex Somatic 60s skimmer giveaway! - ReefDudes 3K Subscriber Contest!!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiiFUxmsVpE -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Did ozone discolor your skimmer acrylic?
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 3 years ago
No it has not. I contacted the company first to verify they used ozone safe acrylics. So double check with the skimmer manufacture first! :)

when you use the apex to control the orp, is it just like setting a heater, set your on and off points and let the apex do the rest?

Hi Daven great video as usual....i noticed you are using Coral box skimmer. Can you tell me which model is it and how has it been performing? Any issues or anything you would have liked different in it? I m about to buy a skimmer and have narrowed down to either Coral box Cloud 9 or Bubble Magus Curve 9......thanks buddy...

The skimmer is a could 9. A little overkill for my tank but it has been solid and issue free. I could prob do a good review video on it if you want

Hi, I fond after running ozne with the apex after a month or so that my orp no longer seems to drop even though visually I can see its not as clear, ill be interested to see if you have this happen to you, I just manually run it everynow and then to clear it up.

That's cool! Is it necessary to run it every night? Would once or twice a week be sufficient?
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 3 years ago
Yes I believe it would be. So far I have turned it down a little more each day to try and find the ideal nightly minimal dose :).

In theory it makes your ozone generator run more efficient. I'm running a super low amount so i'm not sure how much benefit i will get yet. I may try making a diy one using silica gel.. but we shall see!

Dev, really cool video. Quick question, is ur prob setup before or after your protein skimmer?

the ORP probe is in the same chamber as the skimmer

Very intersting results. I'm curious to know how your ORP develops over time. I've thought about adding ozone to my system as well but haven't hit the trigger yet.

Do you have a video with your PAR readings or will you do one updated with the ozone running?
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 3 years ago
I actually took one.. but for some reason it didnt make it into the video :| there was a 20-40 par increase (pretty substantial) after running it for a few hours. If you do try it start super low! I have been turning mine down a bit more each night :)

Redox/ORP yep!

Cheers, i see the term being used frequently (due to apex has the probe i guess), but as i dont measure it myself i have never endulged myself with that knowledge.
Is it related to the value of redox/conductivity of the water?
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 3 years ago
ORP is the oxidation reduction potential of the water.. the ozone is made of 3 oxygen molecules, one of which is released and will latch onto organics in the reaction chamber and oxidize it (break it down). Ill try and explain it more when i do the the followup video ill try to dive into it more.
EngineeringAquariums
EngineeringAquariums - 3 years ago
Daniel Salt ORP is oxidation reduction potential and applies to the water chemistry's ability to remove impurities through oxidation

at 10 percent of my generator which is at around 22mg/hr if i don't use an air restrictor on the feed side. with the restrictor almost completely closed almost 90%, its roughly 2mg/hr. you truly don't need a lot of ozone and its better to keep it at a super low dose spread out through out the day (or night like i do) than multiple "big" shots for short times. when i first was learning to using ozone i had it cranked up really high and i noticed that all my corals started to look deflated and some of them were closing up, i was over dosing and a lot. it can hurt the fish and burn their gills if you use too much. since then i started reducing it to as small of a dose that i can while doing the white bucket test (fill up a 5 gal bucket of tank water against a white bucket and fill up a 5 gallon bucket of clean fresh salt water and compare the colors) now, my tank water is just as clear as fresh salt water.

my tank is a Red Sea Reefer425xl and it's up against a white back ground corner so you notice really quick if the water ever starts getting that yellow tint lol.

ReefDudes - 3 years ago
I told the apex to turn off ozone when the ORP hits 350.. i guess could raise it a bit more.. I keep turning it down slightly on a daily basis until it peaks there rather than turning on and off.. other interesting bit is seeing a PH boost! There is a ton of other benefits im noticing but that will be in the second video once i can confirm it all!

What size is your tank and how much ozone are you using?
Nado
Nado - 3 years ago
If you put a fitting on your lid so that the air coming out is recirculated back into the skimmer but leave that open port on your silencer open, you don't need to use the carbon on top anymore. It's one thing I took from the LifeReef skimmer and incorporated to my reef octopus sro3000 skimmer. Keep an eye on your rubber hose on your skimmer. My old RLSS db6i skimmer I dry rotted from using ozone as it wasn't made for it. I have a ozotech Poseidon series that I run at the lowest setting and restrict airflow to it so it doses less. I do that so I could run the skimmer 24/7 if I wanted but I don't. I don't because by the next day my skimmer stops producing anything. My ORP averages 415
