Hi would randy’s Method have similar results for the ice melter or would the results be different. In Australia we don’t have many affordable 2 part systems, nothing like brs so I was wondering if Randy Holmes method was alright for reef tank.

Is there a way of knowing what type of Magnesium is added to each salt mix? Have you guys sent for ICP test samples of several brands of salts to know the impurities contents?

Salt blends are pretty proprietary to their manufacturers so I would think it's a bit difficult to find out.

Any comment on BrightWell Aquatics Magnesion (Liquid mag supplement) ?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 6 years ago
I'm not sure if it is the same as their powdered Mag supplement that was tested in this video, but in a more concentrated form. They don't share that detailed of info with us, but they'd likely provide you a better answer if you contact them directly.

Felt like the last few months of episodes were not as interesting as past topics or i was less dedicated to my hobby the last few months so and I skipped most of them, but I saw this one in my notifier and I know what it cost to do this stuff and I know whats its worth to my tank. Absolutely thanks the powers that be for letting you get some solid answers to MAG supplements. Its valuable information and I wanted to know it from a source I trust, BRS. GOOD WORK BRS!

AWSOME SERIES! You should do this with salt mixes! I realize that salt is subject to environmental influence, both during the mining/manufacturing process and home use. The real question is, “Is anhydrous salt mix really as pure as they say compared to others”. I feel it should be. Due to the fact that it’s manufactured in a controlled, 100%, dry environment with lab grade materials. But we all know that the product is only as good as the source materials.

Have you guys heard of this pharma grade magnesium supplement...Dead Sea Salt by West Labs? I use it to make up my magnesium solution. It contains 35% Magnesium Chloride, 28% Potassium Chloride, 5% Sodium, and smaller percentages of other elements like Boron and Calcium.

I liked how you did a "normalized" value for each of the products based on how much you would need to use to get the same result, don't recall you doing that for any of the other tests though, when this is all over though I can pop the data into a spreadsheet and do it myself though.

One thing that would be nice would be to know how much of a particular product one is expected to use based off given conditions, doesn't have to be a "one size fits all" but just take for instance the BRS 160 and how many pounds (or fractions thereof) of each thing per month would be necessary to keep levels consistent. I realize it won't fit every situation and tank out there but it gives you a bit of insight to how much we're looking at. For instance, OMG Brighwell is $13/lbs, but after all is said and done you'll use about 30 cents a month worth, then it makes me not really care about how cheap others are in comparison to it, because at the end of the day 30 cents or 10 cents, IMO, is not something to care that much about, 30 dollars versus 10 dollars might have someone balk at the price difference though.

All the kalk was basically the same. I did mention it with the alkalinity but we were already the best so it seemed a bit over the top to calculate it as even better :)

Have you thought about using Epsom salt for magnesium? I read about it on you tube but I haven't tried it myself

I've been using the BRS Bulk MgCl2 combined with Epson Salt (MgSO4) for my 2 part. I'm interested in seeing some test results for the Epson Salt.

I thought for sure Epsom salts would have been tested in place of the street ice melt which to the eye looks nasty.

Excellent video! I'd still go with the BRS product because of price, but I also trust what you folks sell. Call me a fanboy but I am so impressed with what all you folks do at BRS!

Really expected the Brightwell to do poorly from that nasty precipitate. Nice to see them come out on top on something. I was starting to feel bad for them after they put themselves out like that. haha
Duane Clark

Ryan Simmons their kalk was bad though. If they can bring it up to the magnesium specs then they would have something.
Ryan Simmons
Ryan Simmons - 6 years ago
Jase Poag. I think its shows confidence in the product. Honestly BRS pharma and brightwell both performed well but I think brightwell is taking a more ionic balance approach to the fotmula that would work well with the other products for more stable pH.

I agree. I am stopping my Bw kalk due to the last test. Glad to see they did well on this weeks evals.

So right. I haven't tried any Brightwell products, but I'll add their magnesium to my next BRS order.

Really surprised and disappointed you did't put pure mag bath salts to the test https://amzn.to/2GLHbPa I believe that is the go to option to people on a budget not icemelter.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 6 years ago
For what it is worth that's basically the same price as the BRS and Bulk option. Most reefers prefer mag chloride over mag sulfate because chloride is the most abundant ion in seawater so there is less of an overall impact on water chemistry.
