Richard Ross: The Right Kind Of Lazy | MACNA 2017

Phosphate. Nitrate. Detritus. In an effort to create perfect boxes of coral, reef keepers worry an awful lot about these kinds of things – but do we really need to? According to prevailing wisdom, my 15 year old home tank should be a cess pool, but it isn’t, it is a thriving SPS dominated mixed reef. And, my tank isn’t alone. In this talk we will look at how and why my approach to reefkeeping has changed over the years, and how this had made me a happier person that goes on vacations without worrying about my tank. Richard Ross is known for his“Skeptical Reefkeeping” article series, his groundbreaking work with cephalopod husbandry, his entertaining and informative talks, and for managing the ambitious 212,000 gallon reef tank in the Steinhart Aquarium in the California Academy of Sciences. “It’s so great. I get to work on what interests me in a variety of ways; I write and speak about the practical philosophy of aquarium keeping and animal welfare in the hobby press, and I get to publish in academic journals. I get to practice the fascinating craft of aquarium keeping on a daily basis, as well as participate in various kinds of field work like coral sexual reproduction. Through it all, I have the ongoing challenge and honor of working with incredible species like pygmy seahorses, unique cephalopods, ghost pipefish and more”. Richard was presented with the MASNA Aquarist of the Year award in 2015, and his work has been covered by Scientific American, National Geographic, Penn’s Sunday School, NPR’sScience Friday, Discovery News and Fox News. *Legal Stuff* The purpose and content of this video is to provide general information regarding the products and their applications as presented in the video. Favorite words: "The animals like to eat".

As for nutrients, It's my opinion that the glucose etc that the algae (within the corals) release into the water is localized carbon dosing, causing a thin bacteria and microbe bloom within a few mm of the coral, and the polyps then eat this. So the higher the coral cover, the more cross-feeding occurs. This would make use of the high nutrients.

He calls himself lazy and prides himself on that, but really that Apex setup would take hundreds of hours of programming and tweaking. I bet there is a LOT of behind the scenes maintenance. That's not lazy imo.

I want to ask you that can we use spray paint on rock to give it a little shade and if we can won't it be harmful for corals

Someone could of gotten him a chair. My answer to Algae is to throw another handful of Snails in the tank.

this was definitely helpful and I enjoyed watching. I did the same with my tank, had a lazy moment i just let it go for like 6 months no water changes no real cleaning literally no maintenance.. I dosed 2 part and top off water with kalk. other than that i just let numbers good and everything still grows if not better than b4. I'm telling u it's something about having a healthy feeding schedule and good filtration corals actually love semi nutrient rich water. I seen my best colors after a brown out situation...
