I've been following you for a minute now. Like your progress. I don't have any room in my sump for Miracle Mud so I put it in a reactor with a slow trickle. My Rain2 Algae Scrubber is trying to come online but my bio load is very low right now. Need to add to the livestock.

I just thought of something maybe you might be interested in it is called HPD, I feed all my fish this, a friend of mine in Pittsburg turned me onto it, pull up Americanreef HPD. And watch the video, I use mine frozen and use a potato peeler to peel off shreds of food for my fish I also add coral frenzy and Reef chili. Into the mix, I also use this to feed my corals! Let me know how it goes.

Good lessons learned. Yes, I agree, just leave things alone for a while and let things get back to running stable again. I don't do half of the stuff you are doing and my SPS keep growing. So much so that they are growing into each other after starting as frags. I have other problems that I need to work on, but growth is not one of them at the moment. Keep doing what your doing, be easy.

Great update & tips CJ. Lost a majority of my first SPS batch when I tried to chase my KH to what other reefers were recommending leading to instability. I've since let the tank stabilize naturally & haven't lost a coral since. They're slow growing though, so that's my next challenge.

Thanks for sharing CJ. I recently mixed some water for my mixed reef and left it mixing for an extra 4 days because life got in the way. I never checked temp because it was always same as tank ( I run no heaters) well apparently the water i left mixing gained heat due to the water pump. Im loosing some nice Euphyllia colonies and also some other corals. Lesson learned!!

Slow and steady is the hardest lesson to learn in reefing. I still think you should look into a refugium. It's just the most natural way to keep your tank clean and its a copepod breeding ground. Siphoning the sand in a establishes system is probably a bad idea. Better to keep a good cleaning crew for the sand. Acros are hard to keep. I have two that is growing well and 3 that havent change in 4 months. All my birdnest, Digi, plates, chalice, favias, and zoa's are exploding but the acro's are stubborn.

ordered 10 lbs! my tank is a reefer 525, about the same size as yours. can't wait for it to arrive!

my tank is about to approach it's 1 year mark next month, so it's pretty close to yours in terms of age.

i rushed a lot of corals in the beginning, and learnt a lot of very expensive lessons... to the point i was scared to even add any sps. now i'm finally getting the stability i want, and i think my corals are about to go into insane growth mode soon, especially with the mud!

here's my tank, crappy scape, will improve next time around lol

My recommendation is to have a simple filtration, in my aquarium I only use, biopellets, activated carbon, GFO, calcium reactor and a large skimmer, 5% water change every 2 months and the most important thing is to have a lot of patience, you can see my aquarium on Instagram, omarsan_rps, I hope that soon you can solve the problem with your SPS

CJ thank you for the video. I have a couple questions. First, your thought process with releasing that skim mate back into your sump? I understand you thought you would release the nutrients that you feed your tank, but did you think that's all that it would put back into the system? And second when you removed the matrix and it released the detritus isn't that conciderd food for the corals from the sump?? Slow and steady wins the race in growing corals. I take that as one coral maybe two corals a month but I see bags of corals in your sump temperature acclimating. Will you still add more than two at a time in the future?
Dennis Bliss
Dennis Bliss - 6 years ago
CJ'S AQUARIUMS yes sir. I know for me to, having Patients is so freaking hard because I want my tank to look like Ricos tank ,today and not next year. So I get it. You have to know these videos you put out help me tremendously because I learn from your mistakes(not for a min do I want you to have any) so I, and all reefers won't make the same ones. I'm an old man now and when I was young we didn't have you tube, cell phones, videos to watch, everything was done by trial and error. Now there's people like you,Rico,Dave ect To show us what you all have learned. CJ - If you watch the one video I made on YouTube of my 125 gallon and the one I will be making in a few weeks I you will see that we did the same thing. I had a thriving mixed reef and decided to go SPS. In preparation I switched over to the Aquaforest system and started adding SPS from WWC, Pieces of The Ocean, and a few other local LFSs. I pegged the parameters to the WWC suggestions and joined a few of the Aquaforest Groups on FaceBook. I bought a PAR meter and adjusted my Ocean Revive Lights. I had a great moth or two and then shit happens. Came home to the first white coral, then the next, and another. Multiple water changes, nutrient reduction, bubbling, nothing was working. I treated the tank with Melafix and Primafix to treat for bacterial and viral infections since a lot of people suggest that Vibrio may be a cause of these events and it was shortly after I had added a second clam to the tank that this started. Well this stopped everything dead in its tracks for a few weeks. Then did a water change and right back to losing a coral a day. I freaked again and sent a water sample to Triton for testing and everything looked pretty good. I scratched my head and was just like what the heck is going on as the tissue on my scolymias started to recede and immediately grow coralline on their skeletons. Long story short I grabbed my PAR meter again and checked the tank and was quite a bit surprised. The readings were off by about 20-40% in places from where they had been when things were going well. While I love the Ocean Revive lights, I think something ran amuck with them, and I am not sure what. Life has a strange way sometimes of giving you a reality check. Stability is key with SPS, from light, to nutrients, to filtration, and flow. My second video which will be coming out is about this and why I have to take the tank down. The room that it is currently in is going to be converted to a home office so I need a shorter tank and have gotten a Red Sea Reefer 525 XL. I am going to document the whole thing and hopefully share with others my trials and tribulations as you do. I have been with you since my 29 and 40 breeder when you were doing the JBJ. Then I bumped to the 125 and you the 120. I bee with you until the end.

Sorry to hear but definitely a learning experience we've all gone through one way or another. From my experiences with acros, if you run higher alk you can get away with higher PO4. But if you run high alk and drop you NO3 <2-5ppm and PO4 <0.02-0.05ppm you can RTN . Also do only 1 change at a time.
CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 6 years ago
Ellery Wong never thought I’d try to reach the acro level in this hobby so soon... but I’m def learning about balance. It’s something that is multifaceted and always changing .. I agree less water changes moving forward. Thanks for watching

It happens to all of Us. You will notice that Those sps that survived will be with you for a long time. They are strong. You should stop water changes

It seems kinda morbid when you use their bones to feed the other corals in a calcium reactor (mooo ha ha ha)

Hoping you could help CJ, slowly converting my system so that I can run the triton Method. Currently setting up s refugium that is 10/20 percent of display. When and for how long should my refugium light be on? I’ve heard some people say have them on all the time, some people say opposite time to your main display lights? Any clarification would be great :)

Fat Headed Fish I run my algae scrubber 18hrs on 6 off .. opposite of my display. Ultimately how long you leave yours on will depend on your tanks needs.. there is a direct correlation between length and photo period and nutrients removed. Find your tanks balance thru testing and observing your corals. Good luck!

Most valuable lesson I've learned in the hobby is if your tank is doing good don't change anything lol. I've learned that the hard way in my current tank when I rotated a rock 90 degrees, and I sent my green wrasse into a territorial rage against my yellow wrasse when they'd be happy together for a year.

Hey cj. After watching your vids and other reefers I finally took the leap from freshwater to salt. After letting my tank cycle I just put in a clownfish and a yellow tang in. In 2 weeks I will add another clown and a shrimp!
