you got me rethinking the whole idea of filter socks. i been dosing pods and havent really been seeing them, my tank has been running for a few years and i think its due to my filter socks. gonna have to do this on my next build
Phong Le
Phong Le - 7 years ago
using 200 micron filter socks filters a lot of water, but pods cant get threw. thanks for reply. will continue to keep following you.
CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago
no doubt.. my plan is dumping thousands off pods in the refugium and let them live in peace throughout the pond matrix media.. helping to eat up detritus.. and have a clear path back to the tank via the return pump.. we will see how well it work out..

Per usual, a really informative, entertaining, interesting video. I love the laid back vibe, considering how stressful and time-consuming the process of putting one of these together can be.

Not really a tip, but more of a thought: if you find yourself needing to paint an aquarium or sump again, take a look at plasti-dip. I've always used it on my aquariums/terrariums, and while it's durable, you can just peel it off if necessary and in strategic ways, and it tends to be less messy for roughly the same cost (though rustoleum is definitely tried and true). My ato requires clear glass, so I cut out a small square for it, etc. It's also non-toxic and reef safe once dried (I use it to insulate my ball python enclosure). Beautiful setup so far.
CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago
ive seen it.. just concerned the same reason its easy to peel would work against me removing the sump.. I did think about coating the inside of the stand with it for water proofing tho... thanks for the input.

I have really enjoyed your perspective on reefing and the manner that you have taken. I'm excited to watch what video you will come out with next. you have what seems to be the perfect balance of information and interest as to what we need to know and what makes reefing fun .

Plus your selection of products is great at a price point that is aspirational yet within the reach of most people's budget.

I based in London UK and was not aware of a few of the brands you have selected and have now looked into them as well and now interested to see how they work out for you.

Anyway I should stop blabbing on and say well done brother.

From left to right, does the heater go in the first chamber vertically, because the water level there is constant??
I like the layout of the sump you built.
l used a 30 gal fish tank for my sump. I drilled 3 holes in the short side of a 30 gal long fish tank to receive bulkheads and hoses from the main tank so I could keep the lid that came with the 30 gal on top. I also drilled a hole in the back of the thirty gal to receive hose from my return pump. All hoses go in and come out the sides and back of my sump. The top hinged lid lifts for access or comes completely off very easy, and prevents evaporation, and is quite as hell. I've been changing the same filter socks weekly for 11 years; and they still polish the water crystal clear. But I do think your idea of not using filter socks is a lot easier. And your design is grate; but I think drilling the sides and back is better than accessing the sump from the top..

How much space are you going to have to add dosing units or reactors? Looking forward to see your episodes each week. I've learned volumes of information from watching your channel. On hanging your canopy or lights you might look at a Johnson pocket door hanging hardware. very heavy duty up to 350 lb door with no trouble. Good Job!!!

Have you looked into using the herbie method with one return? Some more info: http://gmacreef.com/herbie-overflow-reef-tank-plumbing-method-basics/

I used the beananimal on my old 105 gallon it was very quiet vs durso. I have a custom 30 gallon AIO pending, I may eat my words, but I won't go big again.

I cant wait for this build to be done!

I mentioned Herbie drain during the video when talking about the first chamber..

that was my plan all along... tank is drilled with three 1'' holes... Ill run the Herbie method on this tank.. siphon, emergency and return line...

had a silent tank the first time I used this method years ago on my first reef. thanks for watching man.. still a lot more work to be done

Yeah silicone - my husband is always a bit embarrassed about the silicone job he did when he built my current sump but i told him that in the end, it's function that matters in the sump. And it functions really well. I find it really exciting to watch your videos as you make progress, It's fun!

CJ'S AQUARIUMS yeah man I work at one of my local LFS and the stand we sell have built it acrylic drip trays but the 90 set up I have I got for free and it didn't have that tray so the mat is my next option

Did you look at any other "kits" (Red Sea, IM, etc) and what led you to the SC even though you basically rebuilt the sump? I've got an RL45 as well and I wanted to move up this year. The prices look decent for SC but that cant be all there is to it.
CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago
u said it... the price point. I wanted a 24'' wide footprint.. the price for those other kits at that size are very expensive. I was mainly concerned with the quality of the tank (starfire glass & euro braced), sump, and equip included. I will use the skimmer for sure.. and upgrade the return pump only due to me planning on using a manifold. I will need the extra head pressure to run it... the provided pump will be perfect from water changes though

the sump rebuild was just an option just like me plumbing it with hard pvc instead of the soft hosing provided.... others have ran it as is with filter socks... this rebuild only cost me $11 and a little time.. hardly something I would consider a turnoff from these tanks... everything is really good quality

abreezeducttesting - 7 years ago
on the filter tray, when the filter media gets clogged. How much water will that tray hold? It doesn't look like more then a couple of gallons. The reason I'm asking is because on my sump, it holds a lot. I was thinking it could change the salinity. I'm thinking of a different way to polish the water on my sump. love the build CJ
CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago
prob will hold a gallon or so... if I never changed the media the water would just run over the baffle.. basically the same water that would have run under it. Nothing effects salinity except evaporation or extra ro water dumped into the tank.. that will be handled by the ATO float switch I will mount in the return section. All the filter tray size effects is how long I will have before the media completely clogs and the water bypasses my filter floss... using existing baffles limited how much i could control that part but it still should work as planned

Nice job on the sump. Got a tip for you. Consider water proofing the bottom of the sump either water proof paint or use PVC sheet. you can get them at Home depot. The other thing, if you can, rig in about a 2" high lip all around the tank and seal it. That way, if the sump ever over flows, for any reasons, you will trap the water inside the sump and it should never seep out onto you carpet. Makes for a easy clean up. Just a thought.

Very very nice CJ. I'm jealous of the size of that sump. I have to cram all my equipment in mine and I have the same brand you have. Love the videos CJ! Would you add a sump to a 29 gl. Oceanic biocube? I bought a 20 gallon and am planning on making a sump out of it, but I'm just not 100%. After watching your jbj videos, I'm just wondering if a sump is the way to go or just a protein skimmer. Right now I just have polyfilter laying on some egg crate all the way across chamber two, over top of the bio balls. I am also using a gfo reactor hanging off the back. There's a lot of different ways I can go, but I'm just curious what you would do with this system. I really value your opinion.

Great video CJ. Thanks for putting it back up. You've got the flooding part covered off. Not sure what your future plans are but keep in mind if you're power ever does go out and your sump fills up you MUST delay the startup of your protein skimmer until the water level has returned to the normal run level otherwise your cup will fill up and overflow all that schumtz back into your sump and display. My stepdad would always tell me so I could remember the silicon when building in your house. Blue is true and Red is dead. So the blue is true to the environment. The red will kill bacteria to stop build up. Like the new tank. Got a long story about me and my tank. Don't know if I want to get back to videos yet. Good job man.

John Munoz more like spent $11 and a few hours moving the existing baffles the way I wanted them. Def cheaper than a custom sump that's for sure hahaha

Great Vid CJ. I have been watching and catching up on your vids. Referred by my bro-in-law AM_FIT_ELITE_REEFER. I wanted to ask you where are you going to put the ATO, which chamber? Thanks. Looking forward to this aquarium progression.

Pleasantly Manly yes I'll have my jbj ato float valves in the return chamber. That's the only chamber that will show evaporation ...

I see. will you have just the float valves in the return chamber then? I am revamping my sump for my 93g cube and really appreciate your advice. Thanks!

decided against having an in sump ATO... It will be outside the stand for easier access. the extra room int he refugium will be very useful down the road if i need a frag area..

I used a GE silicone for my reef and it killed all my fish but it didn't effect my coral surprisingly. I lost my $200 clown fish. It still makes me nauseous
