one best thing about DIY is that you get the real satisfaction after all your hard work and the moment you watch it RUN successfully. you are standing there and watching it like "damn..it works." you smile and you are fully satisfy of your own built.

I LOVE these vids.  I am really looking at getting an Aquarium from SCA and these videos are so helpful for a newbie like me to hopefully get it set up and best as you possibly can.

Definitely going to use this hanging canopy solution you came up with.  GREAT idea.  Can't wait to get going on this.  Just gotta keep saving up.

CJ do you recommend ocean revive? I also have a 120, looking for lighting options without breaking the bank.

Such a great job man! perfect! i'm not a fan of canopies at all and how it was before you created this was just no good. WAY TOO MUCH BLOCKAGE of the aquarium. not sure what they were thinking. your design is awesome and looks great.
CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago
Rotter Tube Reef no doubt man... they actually included wood rails you could add in the canopy to raise its height. Should have explained that but ether way I didn't want to cover my tank... access is a huge thing and not having to remove the canopy for tank maintenance was def important. Thanks for watching man

CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago
chip turd gotcha.... on my jbj I was getting 50-100 par 13" off the water only running 30% power.... that tank was 19" deep. had this checked with a par meter ... figured that would translate to this tank well. May have to run them 80-100%... but I'll have my par checked later when the time comes... will be mixed reef so I'll place corals in the appropriate spots
chip turd

CJ'S AQUARIUMS on a redsea 500 I was getting about 200 at the bed 10" off the water line on 100% less than 50 at 16"

I see you went with ocean revive again. Is there a specific reason? Also will you be growing sps in the tank? If so do you think thay they will be sufficient? reason I ask is I'm looking for lights for my 65 gallon red sea max
CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago
they served me well on the JBJ growing lps and sps corals.. considering I only had them running at 30% I have no doubt I have the power to run them on this tank.. I only had to add a second fixture.. so keeping my cost down on this build was also a factor..

I'm loving the new tank man, can't wait to see it filled with fish and coral. I wanted to do the floating canopy as well but my wife and I were afraid of the light intensity it would produce for our 2 year old and 9 month old when they are playing around the tank if they looked directly at it. I never really investigated if this would be a problem or if we were over reacting lol. First time parents :P

The way set it up is awesome man the fold back.. you clever mofo haha!! I looks amazing man, i just know owning two of them lights myself they are good but nearly a meter to the bottom is a little ways, will be a good test :) keep up the good work brother!!
CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago
it ended up about 3'' higher than I wanted.. but Ill live with it.. having access to the tank is a hug plus. these lights will just have to be cranked up to about 80% to hit the bottom with enough par.. should be fine. Par testing will come later tho thats for sure

Too Cool CJ. Thats awesome. I love that look. That opens up all kinds of possibilities. I was thinking. I can remember in the other video, but when you added the padding for the sump. One of the cool things I have noticed about my tank is Red Sea added a 1" tall pad along the back wall. Its the same thickness as the floor membrane but I think it helps keep the tank quiet buy not allowing the sump to contact the back wall. Keep it up... Tank is looking awesome!!
John’s Reef
John’s Reef - 7 years ago
oh I was just trying to suggest you putting one on there. You are killing it man. One last thing. Just a little electricians shortcut. if you decide to run the wire in the wall. A little section of the chain you used to hold that canopy up works well if you want to run wire in a wall. You feed it in the wall and the weight will help it drop straight down. Then you tape the wire to the chain and pull it through.

Reefing with Billy Pipes i may end up doing it... the canopy is tilting downward just a tad bit to help direct the light towards the back of the tank. But it all depends on the view I have from the lazy boy imma gonna place right across from the tank haha

Wire mold works for the lighting power - comes with double side stick tape - get some brown spray paint to blend with the wood panel wall - also could use same paint to cover the white vent grill to blend in as well https://www.platt.com/platt-electric-supply/1-Piece-Raceway-Accessories-Raceway/Wiremold/2700/product.aspx?zpid=197563

figured you had an idea - all the planning and thinking ahead you do to get that clean install - great videos. I believe you had mentioned moving the receptacle - did you do that? Although its a bit of a pain, you could relocate and/or tap off the one you have and install a receptacle higher - that way no wires to hide going down the wall - wire mold and paint would be easier
CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago
seen the same stuff at home depot I planned to use... gonna use it for all of my other equipment wiring as well... just gonna replace the vent with a black non reflective one.. they not expensive at all.. thanks for the input and watching man!

Looks a lot better getting that canopy off the top of the tank, IMO it always looks like your grandpas freshwater tank when people have canopy's mounted directly onto the tank. I'd be concerned about your par/pur ratings especially at the bottom of the tank with those fixtures you're using and how high they are OTWL.
CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago
def digging the canopy above the tank... Ive used these lights 13'' off my 19'' deep JBJ... was easily getting 100 par on the bottom with the lights only running 35%... no doubt in my mind they can handle the task at hand... this will be a mixed reef so low par areas are something Ill need anyways.. thanks for watching man

my advice is fill the tank and sump to make sure there's no leaks before you go any further.
googIereallysucks
googIereallysucks - 7 years ago
CJ'S AQUARIUMS probably want to do it before plumbing. If one of the tank seams leaks, you will then have to tear all the plumbing off. Just fill it with tap water, check tank for leaks, then drain the water. Shouldn't take longer than an hour.
CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago
prob be a good idea to plumb it first right? hahahahhaha... no worries man i got it all covered. thanks for watching

Looks great. just my opinion but the white vent wouldn't show if. painted black. and if u don't like u can buy new one from homedepot aka diycentral. just an idea to get rid of the ugly white reflection.
Sarah Grassi

Tks. Right now I'm stuck on go with the jbj45 or go bigger. I like the aio tanks like jbj and innovative marine. I do know I plan on doing like a green star polyp field with like a tree like structure of frogspawn. Think that would be cool.

CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago

No problem. I'm thinking of getting the jbj 45 and using ur videos as a tutorial. Had a jbj28 but left my lights on through the cycle and didn't know enough about the hobby as I do now.been spending last 10 mnths watching YouTube and feel more comfortable. Gonna buy every first then start so I'm not fumbling around later.

I already see that you made one heck of a tank build. The floating canopy/light fixture is amazing. Are you adding accent lighting to the sump area as well? IMPRESSIVE.... Great job CJ. I'm a proud subscriber. Keep up the awesome work and I can't wait to see your fish and coral selection. As for your aquascape design, have you considered constructing a scape that has multiple viewing angles? BTW, where is your recliner in regards to the tank again?
CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago
yea i have a specific plan in mind for this tank.. im revealing them 1 episode at a time... aquascape will 3 viewing angles.. extending vertically, horizontally.. and portions of it will be floating... Recliner will face the tank.. haven't gotten it yet tho.. kids toys still are in the way hahaha... more to come. thanks for watching man

You did a great job on installing the canopy to the wall. There is nothing stronger then attaching something to the studs in the wall. Oh and those 4" hinges are over kill but better be safe then sorry. Just think those hinges hold up really heavy doors I know I've install a few doors. CJ you did a good job man.
CJ'S AQUARIUMS
CJ'S AQUARIUMS - 7 years ago
Ruben thanks man. I oversized a lot of the things I used.. just to be safe. From what I could tell it would still hold even if one of the chains failed or two of the hinges... No doubt it would survive a occasional bump too...
