hi Daniel awesome tank .. the live rock acts as a fiter.. i was told more live rock have u really dont even need a protein skimmer ... awesome tank

i have 800l reef tank and am planing to upgrade it to 2000l,and i was thinking to lose the sump to be a aquarium with good protein skimmer.
what do you think?

protein skimmer is also a filter, so this tank is not absolutely filter free.

Chad Canoy it is filter free as a protein skimmer is not a filter and is not classed as one!!!

how does the fish live i mean this might be a stupid question but i can see a reef only non filter tank but didnt think you could have fish in it.. i was thinking a filter creates more oxygen in the water so the fish could breath better..

A filter provides extra area for beneficial bacteria to live, the water is passed through the filter and the bacteria convert ammonia from fish waste to nitrite and then into less harmful nitrate. However, the bacteria aren't going to care where they live and providing there is enough surface area within the tank you don't technically need a filter.
