Sanjay Joshi Inspired Reef Tank. No Sumps, No Skimmers, No Maintenance!

Hey folks, come check out my 2 "LOW" maintenance Reef Tanks. Recently I watched a Reef Builders video featuring Sanjay Joshi's 23 year old No Maintenance Tank and I was amazed and Inspired. Most of all because my approach in the Aquarium Hobby is very similar to Sanjay's Nano. Not for experimental purposes, just because. Check out Reef Builder's video on Sanjay's Tank in the link below. Lovely tank. Do you attach your corals with something or just sit them on the rock? Thanks.

Hey Mike just some quick questions... Are you using the Aquaclear 70  on that 40? Why such a high filter for a 40? and also would a HOB Skimmer work instead of a HOB filter? whats the difference?

+Daniel Barrios Romero yes 70. It has plenty of space for different media. Skimmer would work as well but I like to pack my HOB with GFO and polyfilter

You said that the tank has "just soft coral and some SPS", but I see tons of Euphyllia in there, specifically hammers and torches. Those are not soft coral, they're LPS. If you go for your goal of true zero maintenance, they'll likely stop growing and then eventually die once they deplete the calc & alk in the water.
MASS Aquariums
MASS Aquariums - 6 years ago
+Erasmus Crowley yes that is true I do love LPS and I will never do no maintenance. I'll always do a water change once a week. But that's it.
Ariel Espinal
Ariel Espinal - 6 years ago
@massAquariums question I built same type of tank... and it's been a couple a months went through the whole cyno and detritus issues that any beginner tank would, I started adding corals very basic ones (torches, hammers, candy canes) question is seems my torch seems like it's going to die! And my neon hammer losing its color! I don't know what it could be... I've watched most all your videos and leave the coral in the middle of the for a week or two and they are spreading where there not touching each other but losing their colors and torch seems not extended anymore.

The tank is a 40 gallon breeder
Aquaclear 110
Jabeo 8
GFO
Chemipure blue
Vispectra 165 (lights are not ramped up and I do 10 hours 5 hours whites and 5 hours blues)

I also do weekly water changes

Any help would be great!
MASS Aquariums
MASS Aquariums - 6 years ago
+Ariel Espinal in most cases when Corals are dying either your water parameters are off of they do not like the lighting and flow in the place you have them. Torches and hammers need medium flow. Too much will strip them and not enough will kill them. Also try running your blues for 12 hours and whites for 10

Completely new to the saltwater tanks and I have a 20 gallon tank with live rock and sand, cycling with a hang on filter (replaced with cut to size filter to remove carbon filter during cycling), circulation pump, and heater. It has only been cycling for a day and I moved the pump and found already a little bit of algae at the part closest to the light. Is it too early to add gfo? And I welcome any other tips, going for low maintenence.
Neel Kallianpur
Neel Kallianpur - 6 years ago
MASS Aquariums awesome lookong forward to getting it all together. So the only true way to know when my tank is ready for some fish is by making sure ammonia levels are consistently 0, correct? Ready to put something in there! Also, is the only way to add GFO when the time comes via the pump that hangs on the side, or can I somehow run the gfo through my hang on filter?
MASS Aquariums
MASS Aquariums - 6 years ago
+Neel Kallianpur GFO can be added after your fish but follow the directions. Don't panic when you see Algae. You will go through New tank syndrome and experience a lot of different Algae. It takes time.
