Shallow Reef Tank Sump and Equipment Explained - Echotech, Neptune, Jebao, DIY Reactor, Controllers

Saltwater Sump equipment explained along with every other pieces of hardware on my reef tank. You guys asked for it so i went over all my systems life support system. My Retump was previously a Jebao DC7000 and is now a Ecotech Vectra M1, The Reactor pump uses and old Jebao DC Pump. The wave makers are Ecotech MP40QD and a Jabeo CP-40 Gyre pump. For lighting I'm using 4x ecotech XR15 Pros on the display and one on the sump for frags. Nutrient export is handled by the DIY Chaeto reactor. The Skimmer is a coralbox Cloud9 which is a champ! Thanks Samantha. The overall tank / stand is 6’1”. 20 wide and 18 tall.

Do you use an extension cord to run your power to the other end of your tank for power supply? What are your thoughts on running an extension cord in the sump area of your tank?

I’m starting a peninsula 6 footer and my power supply’s will not reach to the other end. Thank you
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
You could just make your control area on the side with power! A lot of the equipment has fairly long cords these days. Maybe check the specs and take it into consideration when choosing which parts to buy
USMC Reefer
USMC Reefer - 7 years ago
ReefDudes thanks man. Ya a lot of peps day that extension cord with short out your equipment if you use them so I wanted to see what you thought. My peninsula tank is gonna have one power outlet where the overflow is so tryin to figure a safe way to get power six feet down the tank.
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
I actually have a plug in the middle of the tank on the wall. I have a ups plugged into the tall and everything else plugged into the ups. My overall length is 6’1” and I managed to “just” get everything to work without extension cords (surprisingly). I only have one on there and that’s to the ozone genteratoe on the back end of the tank on the overflow wall If your going to use them just make sure they are up high and don’t have any risk of water dripping on or seeping into the connectors. Most of my wires are hid at the top of my stand behind the bar out of sight

Do you need all those things in your cabinet to run a reef tank, im on a budget and all that seems to me is very expensive
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
If your starting out get a decent light and a wave maker. Next “essential” I would say is an auto top off. The rest you can add on down the road as needed :). When I new I was upgrading to this tank I was slowly sticking up on equipment for about 6 months prior to getting the tank! Haha. I have now had it for a year and a half and still a slow process to slowly add / change / perfect things. All part of the fun. But I also love automation and making things self sufficient as possible. :). But start slow! s be warned.. it’s an addictive hobby!

ReefDudes I really appreciate the advice, and you seem to be right it does make your life easier having all those gadgets for the tank...i gotta start somewhere i guess haha
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
You most certainly do not. (They just make your life easier) you could take a smaller tank and have nothing but a decent light and powerhead for water flow then just do weekly water changes and be ducccessful. His is all I did with previous smaller systems. One thing you will have to do is top off your tank with fresh water to deal with evaporation manually. If you have lots of coral at some point you will need to manually dose nutrients to the tank. Although weekly water changes can handle that unless your tank is packed with coral .

Skimmer - reduces the need for water changes
Doser - saves you having to doses manually (dosing is more when you have lots of coral )
ATO - auto magic tip off. Adds fresh water to keep
Saliniity stably and deal with evaporation

Tank is awesome but my method is to keep it simple. I don't know what you do for a living but I need to get into that. I can't afford all your gadgets. Water changes is my method of an awesome reef. I have only seen this one video but I'm excited to watch some more

You sure can keep coral! If you don't want to worry to much about dosing yet start with soft coral, mushrooms, Zoas., leathers like ken ya tree. Finger leather. Toadstool. Some other easy ones but can overflow other corals and be a pest (I keep mine on their own island) but green star polyps (GSP) and pulsing Xenia

Hey there - love the channel, and great videos. The light mount is especially slick. Just a question about the CP-40 - you know that is a counterfeit version of the Gyre, right? It is currently in trademark dispute, and is an illegal copy. You might consider replacing with an IceCap licensed version (cheaper than the xf250, if that is a concern), which is a more ethical choice. It is always disappointing to see fraudulent copies of equipment, which takes away from a legitimate businesses' ability to leverage its success and to innovate to create better equipment for us all.
Peter Tucker
Peter Tucker - 7 years ago
True - might just want to call it out, as I'm sure people look up to you as a good resource for education and reef equipment. Kind of funny, Maxspect knew Jabao would copy their design, and sent a pre-emptive cease and desist letter to them, which they ignored. They are still fighting about it. Jabao also blatantly copied the original Tunze designs for their pumps. I think we are so used to everything being made in China that we don't really consider the impact. The real pumps are more expensive, I hear ya, but the hobby benefits long term when counterfeits are not highlighted, and legit companies can innovate and bring new tech to market for us all. I wouldn't be suprised if the new IceCap license model (and a similar license model in Europe) is specifically to head off crappy Jabao. Just on principle I won't buy anything Jabao for that reason - though their price point is hard to ignore given how expensive everything is in this hobby.

In other news - your tank is really inspiring. Starting my 280 build soon, and it will be a peninsula tank as well, with no obstructions on the opposite side - love the clean look.
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
Thanks Peter! heard about that. Not sure how that works with china compay copying another but it works well for now all prob keep it until it fails... it does then look at my options at that time! Doesn't make sense to spend a bunch of money on a new pump when I have one that works for now :)

Can I ask for a few more details on your custom light rail, bc it is by far the best I've seen someone build. What are the dimensions of the rail, it looks maybe close to 2ins? And it's a quad rail? And where did you find it, online? Seems most come in just plain aluminum, the black is so much better. Did you get all the accessories through the same place? Could you do a video of how you built that rail?
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
I'm thinking 2020 or 2525 for that much weight.. but may want to dig into that a bit more. I have 4x XR15 on 1515 so maybe do a weight comparison
Jason Opon
Jason Opon - 7 years ago
ReefDudes I'll be hanging 3 xr30s but over 5ft so getting the 2020 t-slots might be wise.
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
I believe its 1515 which is 1.5"x 1.5" i would prob do 2020 if you had xr30s or heavier lights.. need to calculate how much it can hold with out bending for the weight/span you are trying to do.
Jason Opon
Jason Opon - 7 years ago

What build date is on your CP40? There were tons of failures in the stuff built before July 2016 I believe. Mine only lasted 6 months before the motor failed. I have not had any issues with my 3 Maxspect gyres so far. Just wondering if I should give the CP40 another chance.
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
My origional contrôlée had an issue where it would not always turn the pump back on in pulse mode. They replaced the pump. Same issues. All other modes worked fine. They ended up replacing the controller and it's been golden ever since

Just a heads up, Having an over over sized skimmer just means that it will not be skimming 100% of the time, it will be more off and on. You could save electricity and run that skimmer for half time 12 hrs and get the same results.
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
Prob true. It's DC so pretty efficient as it is. The prices was right so I went for it (future proof if I ever upgrade). I could run it just at night to make my tank even quieter! Hehe
claymore19kilo
claymore19kilo - 7 years ago
quick eazy way to up the ph on any tank with a protein skimmer. move your air inlet tubing from inside the house to outside, ither using a very long airline tubing or drill through the wall to the outside this will reduce the total dissolved Co2 in your tank and raise the ph
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
This is very true! And prob one of the best ways to raise it! I actually ordered an ozone generator so that's my next experiment! :) I'm curious to see if the extra oxygen molacie makes a difference :)

amazing job, i wish i could afford such a nice setup , i see you have a marine pure block as i do, however i recently send for analysis my water with the aquaforest test, and my Aluminium is way way high, some suggest that marine pure blocks bleach aluminium , i believe it was from the AL99 triton anti phosphates i used to use in the past.... so i have to ask how´s your Al level ?ohh and do you have any idea what high Al levels do to corals? thanks for sharing
ReefDudes

I have heard that before.. I have also heard of triton test done in tanks with large amounts of marine pure with no issues.. so i'm not sure if thats a red herring or not.. My tank and corals look great so i'm not to worried! (one day ill do Triton test!)

I am loving the aluminum light bar rack as well as the sump set up, and the steel, stand they all look extremely clean. Who made your aquarium?
ReefDudes

I designed everything then had the stand/glass made from Concept aquariums. The light rack i did my self.

Dude, you have a really sweet setup. So your frag section isnt a refug anymore?
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
Thanks Ed! I build the Chaeto Reactor to make space for the frag section (my sand bed was getting overrun with frags!) The 90W led was a beast and more effective at growing chaeto but if i can get 70% of that and gain a chamber back its a fair trade for now.. i'm just happy i have a spot for all the excess frags so i can help keep the display tidy
