Testing for Magnesium in your Reef Tank

This video will focus on magnesium which is an often overlooked ion in our reef tanks. Reef hobbyists interested mainly in stony corals tend to tunnel vision in on calcium and alkalinity. On one hand, that makes sense because coral skeletons are primarily made up of calcium carbonate. On the other hand, it’s an incomplete view of what’s happening in our water and, keeping those levels can be challenging despite our best efforts. Here is where testing for Magnesium can help. Thanks for the video and I learned something today. Out of all the test kits, I probably am guilty of not testing magnesium as much as I should. This video helped me understand chemistry better. I'd like to see a video on how important it is to test and dose trace elements in our tanks and if it really important outside of what trace elements we may get in the salt we may use.

Does ppm of Mg also tired to Salinity? One period, my tank salinity is 1.021, ppm of Mg always is 1050~1080. No matter I dose Ca/Mg reeftonic from "aquarium systems".

I'm always curious about how much carbon plays a part in atripping elements like magnesium and needed proteins from the water column. Have you ever tested these chemical levels before and after carbon usage. I feel some people over use carbon.

I would like to see how dosing iodine helps my reef tank and how I should test for it.

Thanks for the Video! Do Potassium next! How do you feel about higher than natural seawater levels of Potassium?

My vote is for Potassium and Iron. I understand they play a very important role in reef chemistry. I believe it's Justin Credabel that advocates testing and dosing of both Potassium and Iron/Manganese for enhanced color and vitality in reef tanks. I just thought you might be able to better explain their purpose and possibly desired parameters a little more clearly.

you guys are all scientific I've done everything imaginable to trying to get my PH up to 8.1 or more. I've got an air line running outside to skimmer, a fan on the top, water surface agitation and air stones in the sump. just at around 7.9 to 8. I'd really like to get up to 8.2 to 8.3 what do I do??? that's what I'd like to see a video on

what about high levels of magnesium 1590+ppm is there any ill effects long term

I've had very high levels of magnesium before and I didn't have any specific issues. In my experience it is more important to keep chemistry as stable as possible rather than chasing numbers, but long term, I try to trend everything towards NSW levels.

Strontium and potassium tests are so annoying.. Strontium because it also registers as calcium so you end up testing for both to get an accurate result with the strontium test. Potassium is just a very involved test especially if using the red sea kit.
