The 400g Reef Resetting Project

After more than 3.5 years of growth, some colonies were dominating the aquarium blocking light and impeding flow. Duane helped me with this project, which involved cutting out the huge corals and planting smaller choice bits to reset the reef. It's not an easy task, and mentally it can be challenging as well. I had to give him the reigns because left to my own means, I would have saved every coral instead of sacrificing the bulk to attain new beauty. It's been a month since we completed this event, and I've gradually come around to accept the newer look and appreciate the individual polyps more and more each day. And I have room to add a few more SPS frags now. ;) Find me on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/melevsreef Or my site: http://www.melevsreef.com http://www.reefaddicts.com I'm also on Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/melevsreef Music by Royalty Free Music - Smooth Jazz Instrumental for Movie Soundtrack: https://youtu.be/V4DIyYzCLbE and Free Background Music for Videos - Youtube - No Copyright - Download Instrumental EDM Tropical House: https://youtu.be/V-ZVhAlxkgg

I have 1 question.
What could you put in a 1000 l saltwater aquarium? Can you put nemo fish with sea horse? The budget is between 1000-5000€.
Tell to me what can you put in a aquarium to have happy and healti fishes? From corals, anemones..to fishes. Dont tell me "google it", please. I dont want to mix alot of species. I want to have baby fish too.
melevsreef
melevsreef - 5 years ago
Hi Laurentiu. 1000 liters is 264 gallons. I ran a 280g reef for 6 years, which was full of all sorts of cool corals and fish. Let me answer some of your specific points: Clownfish (Nemo) can fit any aquarium, and we usually get a pair that will live in an anemone, but they also can live in a coral head instead. A seahorse is a different animal, and needs a different type of aquarium, typically a taller skinny tank because seahorses like to latch onto things (like plastic chain link) up and down in the tank all day. My friend Felicia just did a nice article about seahorses; I believe it was in Coral Magazine perhaps.

You should start off with some education before you spend any money whatsoever. Get a subscription to Coral Magazine, for example. Watch a bunch of my videos, I share all sorts of useful knowledge as I ramble from topic to topic, sometimes off topic. :)

Baby fish will not be an option, other than buying very small fish in the first place. That is where saltwater and freshwater differ.

Finally, google is your friend. And any question you ask, add the word melev to the end. "what temperature should my reef be melev" is an example. If I've answered that question before on my website, in a forum or here on Youtube, you'll find it quickly.

Very nice. Just me, but with a tank that big I would want to give sharks a go. Either way, I still need to focus on my 90 gallon tank that is a slow work in progress.
melevsreef
melevsreef - 5 years ago
Sharks need lots of open space and sand. As you saw, my reef doesn't have that theme. I love corals, which grow from tiny polyps, while I think a shark would bore me like a jellyfish display would.

Well, congratulations because after the Staten Islands 20,000 reef, you have next best on YouTube. Best hobbyists,Ive seen so far. With others, bigger is not always better. It just helps!
melevsreef
melevsreef - 5 years ago
I've never added up the tally, but it wouldn't be hard to believe there's about $20,000 invested in everything. I tell people wanting to start a reef tank with quality gear will typically cost $47 per gallon. That youtuber you mentioned would have spent $2115 before adding any livestock. Maybe that's the other $885 he's spent thus far. Here's the breakdown of how I came to that price per gallon: http://www.reefaddicts.com/content.php/167-What-does-it-cost-to-set-up-a-saltwater-reef-tank
Stan TheObserver
Stan TheObserver - 5 years ago
..and thats the hobbyist problem. Few reefs are left to grow...the "reset" seems to set in at ..yeah,about 3 years. Same for natural aquariums..they get redone as monoculture sets in. I guess we just dont use tanks large enough to handle a half decade of growth let alone 20 or 30 years and more.

Geezus you killed 1/2 your tank. That’s messed up... talk about Frags and you don’t mind wiping out 60% of your stock? Am I missing something?
melevsreef
melevsreef - 5 years ago
No, mostly dead skeleton. Duane threw in a few bits of life in there, but it wasn't anything someone would put in their tank. Lots of frags went to other tanks that day, and I took some pieces to the LFS as well. I gave it all away, it wasn't sold or traded for credit. There's been an updated video since then, and I share fresh pictures on my facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/melevsreef

There were a lot of corals in the shadows. I planted a bunch of twigs Duane brought me that are slowly growing into small colonies ever since. There was also a lot of death hidden under the major colonies that we tossed out, which I've been using in my calcium reactor.
MarshReef
MarshReef - 5 years ago
were all those different corals from the end in there the whole time? or did you add a ton of frags? I guess I am trying to figure out what was hiding in the shadows.

You shouldn't have let it all dry out. That was a bit silly. So many people would have loved to have even the smallest of peices. Though it would be a lot of effort on your part. It just seemed wasteful, with all these new young reefers. Anyways, great video and beautiful tank
melevsreef
melevsreef - 6 years ago
Oh, a lot of pieces were given away that day I can assure you. More were given to the LFS near me. And the bulk of what you saw in the vat was dead skeleton. Some parts still had some living tissue, but I posted an open invitation to anyone from the local club to come over that day and grab frags. I've had a few people update me recently and their corals are doing quite well, which is nice to know.

If I can´t sell corals to my friends (in my country). What I have to do with the big colonies, after fragging them? Some people told me to put the corals in the ground into direct light of the Sun, to kill them and use the skeletons (after bleaching them) in a Calcium Reactor.

Whats your advice in such situation? Thanks for the help and congratulations for your work!
melevsreef
melevsreef - 6 years ago
In one of my videos, maybe this one you just watched, I show how I was rinsing off coral skeleton with a garden hose. I rinsed it several times over a period of weeks, let it soak in tap water, drained it dry, then smashed all the skeletons into smaller bits to put in the calcium reactor. I don't see any reason to bury it in the earth, nor would I want to try to retrieve it all once it has been buried.

If everything is kept submerged rather than left exposed to air, it should be okay. Move your livestock to a secondary vessel with saltwater, a powerhead, a thermometer, maybe a heater... depends how long it will take you to do the project. What all do you want to accomplish?

Is there really that much hate between freshwater and saltwater hobbyists? I'm beginning in the world of Freshwater and finding my local fish club is not very new person friendly. It's a really insular community, which can be overwhelming if you're still building your knowledge. I'm also interested in branching into corals. Will I have the same experience there? What's this about?
melevsreef
melevsreef - 6 years ago
I don't believe there is any hate at all. I joke about it, it's my ongoing joke you'll hear occasionally. I'm 100% saltwater, having never had a freshwater tank in my life. However, I'm told by many freshwater people that have switched to saltwater that nothing they learned in that hobby carries over to this hobby. They are literally night and day. I hope you'll enjoy your own saltwater biotope, and if you have questions just ask.

Was hoping you were going to remove those brown palythoas that were hidden in your rock, I used to have those and they were a scourge I couldn't get rid of, only had the slightest bit of green when there was heavy blue lighting on them.
Mike B
Mike B - 6 years ago
Probably never bothered you because there was so much of those corals growing over everything :)

Seriously though, you're probably going to have some serious growth going on now that everything can get light now!

I like it. Do you think you should have done more since you wete doing it. Also I love anemones but do you regret putting the anemone in the main display. It's freakin huge and the clowns don't seem to stay in it as much.
melevsreef
melevsreef - 6 years ago
I look at the Sebae as a showpiece, and it's a living canvas. Not really a regret, although having stuff die that it touches/touched is annoying. Done more? Not really. The aquascape was done right the first time, Duane agreed it didn't need any changes. It does need about 12 more frags.

Wow, big change for sure!  Definitely for the better though and lots of people got to benefit from the "chunks" and frags I'm sure.  You must have some incredible calcium levels in there to make them grow that huge.

A lesson in neglecting the routine manicure of your corals. Learn from others.
melevsreef
melevsreef - 6 years ago
I don't like cutting corals, and I really like seeing them turn into their natural shapes. The manicured reef is visually appealing, but I've only seen three that I really liked. Still, your point is valid and I'll have to find a happy medium. :)

#melevsreef It does take some getting used to after finishing work like that. I did it a lot over the years, moving a lot until I finally purchased my home. Sadly, work on the house kept me away from the tank and I'm about to reset my system as well. The problem I have, I don't have any corals left to worry about. I plan to pull all the rock, scrub the rock down, clean the DSB and then install all new plumbing, pumps and lights and start my dosing pumps again.
It can be shocking when you look at change on this scale. Once the corals get back to growing again, it will get better.

I had quite a few clams in my 400g back in 2011 before the tank leaked. They didn't survive that ordeal. Then I bought one that I put in my anemone cube, but the eel ate it. It's time, I need to find one or more to place in my reef now that you mention it. :)
