Hey George, I recently added a Kenya Tree, GSP, and a pulsing Xenia to my aquarium, the tree and Xenia are doing awesome, however my GSP has retracted and pretty much looks like a worm strapped to a rock... can you give me any tips on what I should do ? These are my first softies. I also added three zoa’s which are all going great..

Cheers

could u please do a video about corals which explains what actually corals are. I'm seriously trying to learn as much about salt water aquarium as I'm interested in starting the reef salt water tank. but the information out there is so much from anywhere from corals are animal, they can sting, u can die from it, but in many ways they behave like plant I'm confused why they glow under certain lights. please explain the bottom basic information about corals such as I want 20 to 40 g nano tank. I personally don't want to put no more than 2 to 3 fish, but I want corals and it is the color and movement in water which attracts me to coral
CoralFish12g
CoralFish12g - 8 years ago
+Sumera Seraj Hi, you have a lot of research to do. In some ways they do behave like plants. They have fluorescent properties that makes them glow. There is a lot of science to that, which I can't explain in a YouTube comment... I really like this video for beginners, give it a look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0WwT4j86a0

goodall1bay
goodall1bay - 7 years ago
Todd Miller I would say it likes some phosphates rather than nitrates. I keep them and they are growing fast, but my nitrates went up recently and now they seem to have slowed and have become more thin and retracted. My phosphates are maintained the same.

Carole Just Carole - 6 years ago
Discus BOL since Xenia is a filter feeder maybe a higher nutrient content. I notice that they are not super particular about light, but they do move more in medium to high light. Some people actually use Xenia in their sump as part of their filtration/ nitrate consumption system.

multisturge
multisturge - 9 years ago
Just removed all of my xenia today. Hard decision to make because like you said its a nice coral with the swaying in the flow and pulsing action but it was turning into a nightmare managing it. It was making my blue cespitularia (blue xenia) shrink, surrounds my Kenya tree and bend my toadstool because the xenia was taking too much of the light and flow and was even growing up the back wall. But least I know to that when the time comes when I upgrade my nano to a larger tank I'll get a small colony and put it on the sand to prevent it from spreading. Now I got a redish brown branching montipora and a Duncan coral frag to see how I do with hard corals then maybe try some Acros. Someone told me about a set up they've seen where they put the GSP on the back wall so you get a grassy carpet covering the back wall.
multisturge
multisturge - 9 years ago
yeah that's why I don't have any because some of my rocks are close to the wall where other corals are.

Hey! liked your video! I didn't agree with promoting the flowerpot's, as they are still not successfully kept by most reefer's. Even tanks with pristine water quality, and everything else growing successfully don't keep flowerpot's alive. Xenia in my tank grows like a weed, and I sell regularly. Galaxea I wouldn't recommend to anyone! Star polyp's are the best for beginners. You are on the right track though. Most of your suggestions are spot on! I've had good luck with elephant ear mushrooms in dirty water with MH 175 W lights. Extreme growth. You should do a video on different types of mushrooms lad. Good video and keep up the good work!!

I got xenia in my 20g nano and I saw xenia winning a mile off, I love seeing the xenia pulsing, I've also got an uncommon to find blue cespitularia coral (from xenia family) which is growing new heads and splitting off around the rock, because its uncommon to find then fragging it should be good for my LFS if they're interested, I'll be going there some when after the holidays when I get my paycheque in and might buy some yellow polyps and GSP, maybe order in a fish that I want and ask them about if they're interested in some frags :)

to any newbies, please disregard the first 5 suggested haha... these are all awesome corals, but as first coral, always go with green star polyps, hammer or frogspawn(torch is a bit too aggressive for me). and under no circumstances ever get a galaxia or xenia/kenya tree/ nepthia/ anthelia, etc unless that is the only thing you want in your tank.. those softies would be awesome for a setup focused on fish.. where things might eat a cleanup crew.. they will overgrow the rocks and they look really cool. they can be blue purple and dirty pink colors. They will quickly overgrow stuff and you cannot just pull them off the rocks and call it a day. even a single cell will grow a new colony.

once again, all the corals in this list are awesome, but this seems like a list for people that are experienced. for first corals, stick to simple lps corals, zoanthids, green star polyps, etc....
CoralFish12g
CoralFish12g - 10 years ago

Nice stuff amigo. I'd love to have a reef tank. There are some gorgeous corals out there.
Good job with the editing. A professional and clean looking video makes a huge difference.

I like your top 10! You also tell really useful information about them. at the moment I'm brainstorming about wich corals I want to put in my tank. My 35 gallon is now running for a month. Every one or two weeks I try to upload a video to add on my diary. If you've got any tips or questions please let me know! I have heard that Xenia pulse because they come from areas of low flow and create their own to help them filter out nutrients from fresh sea water.
