I have a question regarding setting up this overflow. I have a 90 gallon tank with an overflow box. One pipe is an intake the other is on out. I don't believe they are the same size bulk head. One is 1 inch the other is smaller. If I use this method will the emergency valve bring the smaller bulk head will the setup work? Do you recommend drilling a bigger hole?

You could utilize the smaller hole as an emergency drain line, but you would need to have a way to keep it higher than your main drain. That way, it can act as a true emergency. Personally, I'm not a fan of having my return line over the edge of the aquarium, which is what you would have to do if you aren't going to utilize one of the drilled holes as a return line. You could also drill another hole as your return line. :-)

I have an older (12+ years old) reef ready 72 gallon bow front that was just given to me and is my first exposure to a sump and overflow. I only have one hole in the bottom so I can't have the dual overflow as you have shown here and from what I can tell the entire tank is tempered glass which would preclude drilling a new hole. Is it possible to make the same modification with some sort of splitter to turn 1 pipe into 2 inside the back of the tank or is that creating a potential where the one overflow could get clogged below the split? How I see it, as of now if my overflow got clogged by a snail I'd think the tank would overflow anyway, no? Thoughts? I'd appreciate any suggestions to make this tank quieter. Thanks.

i was going to follow gmreef guide to the letter and automatically have the e drain halfway down. what dertermins having it higher.. as you talk about adusting the hight. if i make it halfway down straght away will i get issues.. using 25mm pipe . ive drilled at the bottom

+BulkReefSupplyCom I'm confused sorry could you explain. I was going to set the e drain at the top and main drain halfway as per the guide. Why wouldn't you go straight to that height if it's the quietest. I no one factor is if the sump can handle all the water if power cuts ? Just trying to get my head round it as don't want to mess this up

Honestly the largest factor is distance between the main drain inlet and the emergency inlet. As long as there is room there it allows your main drain to be easily tuned.

How tall should the drain pipe be in relation to your tank size? I'm setting up a 90 gallon tank that has an internal overflow box with two 1" drains and two 3/4" returns. The tank is 24" tall.

+Lawrence Sinclair What type of drain setup are you planning on running? I would probably recommend the Herbie system. If that's the route you choose, one drain will be low in the overflow, and the other (emergency drain) will be just below the overflow teeth.

For a reef tank will the api reef master kit get the job done for everything I need to test the water
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 9 years ago
+J Parker That kit will be a good start, however it does not include a magnesium test, and I would likely consider upgrading the phosphate kit to something like the Hanna Checker which in my experience is more user friendly since you don't need to rely on color change/titration.  This is the setup we usually recommend, although you will need to purchase a nitrate and phosphate kit separately:

can this work well with only one pipe?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 10 years ago
+ika manashvili Unfortunately you would not want to do this with a single pipe. It's common for the main drain to back up a bit from snails or algae so its super important to have the backup drain so your tank doesn't overflow in that situation.

sounds to me like air is getting stuck in the tubes after a shut down. I would make sure there is a way for the air to escape when it starts back up . Maybe shorten the tube depth in the sump or take a look at the way the water enters the pipe in the overflow

I went with the herbie method. If I need to shut the system down for cleaning, starting it back up is a nightmare. The return water will fill up the display and not drain down either of the stand pipes. A buddy suggested that my drain pipes inside the sump need to be the same depth as the ones in my overflow. Anyone have any suggests?

Depends. If you want the water level to be the same, I'll buy an overflow box. If it doesn't matter, you can use bulkhead strainers. If you have a big tank, overflow would be good, if small like a 20 gallon, strainer is ok. It's also hard to calculate where the water level would be with the gallons per hour. You have to experiment, but once you drilled glass, you can't undrill it. If you go Petsmart, Petco, or other fish supplier, they use strainers in their aquarium.

why can't you just put some metal mesh or something at the top of the pipes?

A single overflow tube can be used, if you put a plastic mesh tube down around the overflow tube... It would then work as a normal overflowcomb :
