Sally is starting a 8g nano reef tank so we went to PetCo and Congressional Aquarium to pick up some essentials. -- Music: Rhythms by DJ Quads https://soundcloud.com/aka-dj-quads/rhythm-vlog-music Back in Time by DJ Quads: https://soundcloud.com/aka-dj-quads/back-in-time-vlog-music

Long story, but I only want a saltwater tank b/c there are nasty fungus/bacteria spores that kill the live plants & clog the filters in my freshwater tanks. But my experiments show it will not grow in salt water w/ a PH over 8.2. Actually mollies can be acclimated to saltwater, but I need a "clean up crew" also...
The reason I'm thinking about Opae Ula is I don't like taking animals out of the wild unless absolutely necessary. The Scarlet/Skunk cleaner shimp can reproduce, but the dominant pair tend to kill other shimp in their "territory" - in the ocean that works, b/c it makes the offspring go find their own territory, but not in a little tank. Peperment shrimp may nibble on soft coral. I think the marine "red fire shrimp" can reproduce, but (a) they're nocturnal, so you don't see them much & (b) they like meaty foods, & my fish will probably eat spirolina flakes, so I don't know if there will be enough meaty foods for them.... The hermit crabs are usually wild caught & breeding them takes a "land tank." I'm not sure about the green emerald crabs, but I hear they may nibble on soft corals...
But maybe a couple marine nerite snails are enough, & I think the marine nerites may breed in saltwater & if there are enough hiding spots in rocks & macroalgae, maybe some of the larvae will survive.
I am not sure if the increase in other elements would compensate for the lower salinity... a quick search showed no Opae Ula shrimp tank with coral, at most it seems to be very few macro algae. If you already have a reef tank, may be worth trying to gradually acclimate GSP or Mushrooms to a lower salinity to see how they react... if it is not sustainable you could always acclimate them back to full strength and put them back into your reef tank.
This sounds really cool though, I have been thinking about setting up a tiny desktop freshwater shrimp tank. Will you be uploading videos to your Youtube channel?
The reason I'm thinking about this is b/c I might want to have Opae Ula shrimp. They are actually brackish shrimp. They can survive full strength seawater, but probably won't reproduce.
