Could this filter be modified further? Perhaps a sponge instead of a sock--or even inside of the sock--and perhaps some Seachem matrix or other porous biological media in the second chamber?

Can you get a better light for this tank with more features? And I do understand that will cost more, I definetly want to start a reef tank and people say you should splurge a little on the light. I'm want to do a coral tank only at first with some shrimp. Great video

I have a question.. if I start up a new tank, can I just put the saltwater from my other tank and start adding fishes and corals? Have a 150g and starting up a nano tank
Marine Depot Aquarium Supplies
Marine Depot Aquarium Supplies - 6 years ago
Yes, using water from an established tank is a great way to help quicken cycle times. I would still allow 3-4 weeks for the new tank to establish before adding livestock if possible. This will ensure stability in the new aquarium and ultimately the best chances for success with your nano tank.

Loonykilla10 Just my opinion, but a skimmer goes a long way on a small tank. People say water changes are enough, but that's like having a leaky tire and saying putting air back in is enough. Sure it works, but do you really want to?

Established water... Hmmm how long have you been in this hobby?
Would a small live rock or the live sand not introduce 1000 more bacteria.
Thomas K
Thomas K - 6 years ago
Thanks for the quick respond, I asked as I appreciate your films, they are neutral and proff made. The idea about bacteria in the water made me shake my head. That,s all as a small live rock, spoon of sand will add much more. And IMO way to much rock, save 1/3 and get some bacteria in a bottle, for such a small tank 50 ml will last a lifetime ;)
Keep up the good work, and if you ever find your self in Sweden, you have a standing invitation to come and look at my 2300 liter DT (4k system) that is cycling this "summer".
Marine Depot Aquarium Supplies
Marine Depot Aquarium Supplies - 6 years ago
Hey Thomas, thanks for watching! Yes, live rock and live sand does introduce bacteria into an aquarium, using water from an established tank will also add bacteria and help with cycling the aquarium. It also helps introduce different types of bacteria that may not be found on live rock or live sand. We chose to use dry rock in this tank that does not contain bacteria yet.

I have been with Marine Depot for over 11 years and I have been keeping aquariums for just about 20 years! Thanks again for tuning in and feel free to let us know if you have more questions.

I am going into 8th grade. I have a job at my family's restaurant making 7 dollars an hour plus tips. I am gonna have a budget of 400$. I am buying everything on this list plus I am going to my local pet store to buy the water. I need some help on some good starter corals. I am not new to the hobby I had a 32-gallon tank for 4 years but we had to sell it when we moved. I am getting a new tank and my mom said as long as I buy everything myself she's fine with it. I have a nice spot out of direct sunlight. My question is what are some active corals and their needs. I also am gonna get some beautiful zoanthids as well as an elegance coral. My old tank was all fish and no coral so I want to get into the coral due to the lack of space for fish.
AwesomeAaron025
AwesomeAaron025 - 6 years ago
thanks, yea I'll wait on the elegance coral for a while.
Marine Depot Aquarium Supplies
Marine Depot Aquarium Supplies - 6 years ago
The best starter corals are zoanthids, leathers, and mushrooms. An Elegance can be a little tricky and I would reserve that one for after you get a bit of experience with keeping corals.

Thanks so much for watching and we look forward to you shopping here at Marine Depot!

Hi Marine Depot!
If I won this Nuvo 10 gallon aquarium, I would first add live sand with beneficial bacteria and life rock from CaribSea for additional bacteria boosts. The first fish you add should be hardier and inexpensive in case your water parameters are not ready for livestock. I would recommend clownfish, gobies, shrimp and/or firefish. In my case, I would add two Wyoming white clownfish (which I've had experience with) and a firefish for additional color. I would add also 5 hermit crabs and five cleaner snails and a cleaner shrimp. For coral, I would add some assorted zoanthids to begin with and then some LPS such as hammers and acan lords and even a rose bubble tip anemone for the clownfish pair.
Good Luck to all contestants and thank you Marine Depot for the great video as usual!

If I win I would set up the aquarium with RODI water from the system that I use with my 4 freshwater tanks and probably add a bit more sand to help with beneficial bacteria growth. I would definitely stock some cardinal fish and a cleaner shrimp and some various snails such as nesarius snails or turban snails. Gobies are always something I've been wanting to keep, or maybe a fire fish would look nice. I would have to do some research on what kind of corals would do best with the light, flow, and overall space that they would have to grow. I would love to branch out from freshwater to saltwater and winning this nano tank would be a great start.

While I have pretty much mastered freshwater planted tanks I have yet to venture into the saltwater nano world. It is very tempting and this video explains exactly what I would need to begin my set-up. I would totally enjoy building this tank and stocking with a filefish, some sea horses and of course the kids would want to see some clownfish. OI find marine invertebrates interesting to watch and think that with a nano tank they would not get lost like they would in a bigger tank. I already have the spot picked out for the tank!

Hey Marine Depot! After being in the freshwater hobby for quite some time, I have decided that I would like to make the jump to saltwater. I have been researching and compiling information about the hobby for around a year, and I believe now would be the right time to start a tank. After visiting Reef-A-Palooza this past weekend, I was exposed to many stunning corals and alluring fish. I learned a lot, and talked with many experienced reefers. Incredibly, I ended up winning the Kleanwater 6-stage RO/DI advanced system from Reef2Reef's raffle. I was in awe, but then the reality struck that I wouldn't be able to use this product as I don't have a tank. Since I am still in school, it is hard for me to pursue this hobby due to it's financial requisites. This would truly be the perfect (dorm room) tank for me! I would probably stock it with either a pair of fire fish or Ocellaris clowns, and maybe even a yellow watchman goby. I would most definitely have a bi-color hammer coral, an island of zoanthids, and some favites. I have watched nearly all of your tutorials, and I think I am ready to take on this new and exciting challenge. This tank would make my dream a reality! Thank you Marine Depot!

This tank would be a perfect tank for reef tank beginners, which includes myself. I have prior knowledge of freshwater aquariums, but this would be the new time commitment I've been looking into for the past couple of months. If I won I would put the tank in our living room as it would exhibit a beautiful piece of the ocean for guests that come to our house. As for stocking, I love corals! The bubble anemone is one of my favorites so I'd put one or two of those in the aquarium. I'm also a fan of marine shrimp and starfish, I think they are colorful and fun to look at. To finish the aquarium I would put one or two clownfish in the aquarium. Thank you for this great opportunity!

Wow this would be a cool little tank to win. I would love to put a pair of the Black Snowflake Clowns in there. As far as corals go I'd love to put a bunch of LPS, some Zo,s, Mint Stylopora... Man I could go on and on. I would get a more powerful light and get some Acropora. I really miss having a tank going. I took down my 75 when my son was born due to time constraints. Now that he is older and I have more time I'd love a small tank. There are sooo many cool new products available that simply did not exist 13 years ago when I got into the hobby. Good Luck everyone!!!

I am newbie! I have had a tank in the past but last year got back in the hobby - however that is for freshwater.

Recently I began looking into reef and coral tanks. I am still so new I am not sure what I would stock a tank with but would initially look at invertebrates like fire shrimp, snails and maybe an urchin. I am very interested in corals but I have not remotely decided which way to go first.

I am very interested in nano fish but that's too far away at the moment... I had not thought to actually get a saltwater tank until next year.

In regards to stocking the 10 gallon, I would recommend using 4 clown gobies (yellow/green) with the addition of friendly inverts :  bumble bee snails, scarlet crabs, a sand sifting starfish after 9 months of maturity and a arrow crab. Coral Stock list: Monitpora Caps, Montipora Digitatas, zoanthids, and a sun coral for a more vibrant appeal. ( stocking will be staged throughout the maturity of the tank.

So complete newb but for a tank like this I was thinking setting up a good section of zoanthids, some toadstool peppered in, and maybe one or two elegance corals. As for cleaning crew I was thinking a mismatched group. One serpent starfish, maybe two trochus snails, and a nassarius snail. Possibly add in a fire shrimp more for aesthetics and some copepods (need to research those more beforehand). Then for fish I was thinking pretty common. Ocellaris clownfish and a hector's goby. Hope that's not too crazy an idea for a nano reef.

I`d stock the tank with 2-3 clownfish. Simple ocellaris sp. and a clean up crew of a few hermits, snails and a shrimp if there is still space.

As for saving money, don`t cheap out. Instead buy quality, don`t cut corners but you can budget.

I think I'd go with a clownfish or two, since I don't want to overstock the tank. Since clownfish are territorial, I don't think you could house more then two.

I would stock the tank with two Premium ORA gladiator clown-fish and a Blue or Emerald Mandarin Dragonet. Hopefully the clown-fish would pair up, and the dragonet would stay near the bottom to avoid the territoriality of the clown-fish. Either way, ive been wanting to start a tank for a few months, and read that in a nano tank its very important not to overstock, so that the fish live comfortably, and with fewer fish, the water parameters wont fluctuate as much. I would start slow with corals, maybe start with a green hammer, or a torch of some sort. Cheers!

If I won the tank I would stock it with three different types of clown fish, and have hermit crabs and star fish in the tank. I would want to find a small anemone for them and since I live in hawaii and cannot buy coral, I would keep a few different colored zooanthids.

I've been in the hobby since 2001 and it's so cool to see how it's changed over time! I'd likely turn this into a softie/LPS tank with a pair of percula clowns, a Yasha hase goby/shrimp, and lots of zoos, ricordea, mini toadstool, frogspawn, acans, and maybe some Xenia. Would be pretty visually appealing while still easy to maintain. I don't have a tank right now so this would be a fun way to get back into the hobby after taking several years off from an sps and clam reef.

classic clown fish, I've never had a reef tank just because of price but always wanted to and this tank system would serve me well into obtaining what I've always wanted to do, I would make it beautiful but simple with 2 clown fish and some cleaner shrimp. I would definitely stock a clownfish to start! The classics are a classic for a reason. One or two cleaner shrimp are a must, and are half the reason I want a saltwater tank in the first place! I'm not sure on the specific corals I would get, I just know they would be soft corals to start!

Hi Marine Depot,
I am an aquarist that has been in the aquarium hobby for a mere 10 years. Along the way there have been ups and downs, but also rewarding moments. I have mostly been part of the freshwater planted aquarium hobby, but i have started to lean towards the salwater side of the hobby. I love the sea and everything in it, but i yet have to setup a saltwater tank. Research after research has finally made me decide what to setup. I love the look of nano aquariums and how they balance out to be an incredible piece of living art. The stocking would be a pistol shrimp and goby pair with the classic ocellaris clownfish pair. Corals would be a pulsing xenya, Elegance coral, and the beautiful rasta zoanthids.
Thank you Marine Depot for this wonderful oppurtunity.
Gordon Hu
Gordon Hu - 6 years ago
I personally think that it would be cruel to keep an ocellaris or percula in a tank of this size. However, a Wetmorella wrasse, a mandarin weaned off live foods, shrimp/goby pair, or an Eviota goby would be something I would choose to stock a 10-gallon with. I would also stick with less demanding corals due to the lower PAR levels, such as Zoas, Euphyllia, and a green leather coral.
