Week 42: Reef Tank Maintenance: 5 minutes a day can transform your tank: 52 Weeks of Reefing #BRS160

http://brs.li/BRS160_Week42 It's Week 42 of 52 Weeks of Reefing, and this week we are showing you how 5 to 10 minutes of work on your tank a day can equal years of success! We'll share what our daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly maintenance schedule looks like for the BRS160. Done well, maintenance can be part of the fun of owning a tank rather than a chore. It can also be the difference between a nice tank and an epic tank as well as a two year or ten year success. Maintenance is generally broke up by how often it needs to be completed, i.e. Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and even Yearly. Here are some examples of tasks you may need to complete on your tank: Daily: Quick wipe down of the glass, magnet clean glass, fish and coral feeding, a quick skimmer check, potential daily dosing of additives, and potentially running some tests, filter sock replacement, etc Weekly: Additional tests, dosing weekly additives, emptying/cleaning filtration like protein skimmers, potentially weekly water changes, etc Monthly: Filter media changes, potentially monthly water changes, checking and refilling automatically dosed elements/additives, monthly testing for slowly consumed additives like magnesium, cleaning powerheads and pumps, etc Yearly: Bulb changes, a string of a few larger water changes spread out over the course of a few days to replace a large volume of your tank's water, cleaning your sump. *Legal Stuff* The purpose and content of this video is to provide general information regarding the products and their applications as presented in the video. Just once, with 2x-PE Mysis; 2x- Spirulina Brine; 1x-PE Calanus; 4-scoops Reef Chili; and a quarter sized amount of Seaweed Extreme. :-)

Hi Ryan, You talk about calcium which is a essential additive to the reef. Just a thought though and I am not sure if this is related to a reef tanks' calcium or not...
Calcium in our bodies is the most dispersed and most essential nutrient. In saying that, our bodies absorb more calcium than any other nutrient that enters our bodies. I just wonder if this stands true with corals as well and therefore I can understand why a C.R is vitally important to ones reef filtration system.
Corals require a steady stream - if you will, of calcium and like our bodies, they too absorb it at an alarming rate.

Erwin A. Caldera Gaucín
Erwin A. Caldera Gaucín - 7 years ago
BulkReefSupplyCom OK, thanks. The thing is that I was choosing between zeovit and biopellets for carbon dosing but I always go on vacation at least once a year and I won't be at home for pumping the zeovit. I think I'll use BRS biopellets. Thanks for your answer.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
Carbon dosing is tricky - you'll likely need to hook that up to a doser pump accurate in the range you are planning on dosing. ATO is relatively easy. If your reservoir only lasts a week and you are on a two week vacation, double the storage container size :) Perhaps the easiest method is to hire a tank sitter or ask a fellow reefer for help.

Why do a 2 part dosing rather than a kalkwasser dose with an ATO system?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
Kalkwasser can have its limits. A lot of tanks with high demand can't run it due to the kalk being unable to keep up.

BulkReefSupplyCom

The best way honestly is to siphon it/gravel vac during a water change, but otherwise you could use natural critters like diamond gobies and nassarius snails.

I do a 20% water change weekly. I have stop testing most of the tests because the levels never move and my home's water ph is around 8.3 to begin with.

Question I have this zoanthids in a quatrain tank in the window to get light with a light freshwater led light to help out. But it won't open or hasn't in a week and this weird black things keep showing up. And I have have been feeding it with coral food.
Bradyn Bouchard
Bradyn Bouchard - 8 years ago
I didn't think they are on the coral but I don't know. And I did Coralrx dipped for and an hour and 40 minutes when I got it but I did get another coralrx dip just haven't used it yep.

Can't get the bottles of the coralrx hard to find in localy going to have to order online.

And for you clown herm with the diamond back goppy don't get the pistil spring for him I got one and he's is bearing my clear up crew but that might also be because I had no rumb rock in the tank but know I added some. Just going to have to wait and see.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
Nice! Zoas can be tricky. Are the black things only on the zoanthid coral or can you find them elsewhere? If they are just on the zoanthids it might be a good idea to dip the coral in a coral dip.
Bradyn Bouchard

And the black things I have no idea what they are I am new to this

SPS no growth/DKH is this a problem... I dose daily but it's dropping down to 7.8 everyday and I can't ever get it around 10 unless I do massive WC; I have good ventilation in my house, surface movement, lighting Kessil 10hrs, calc 460 always, max 1300 always. The only reason I can think of the massive drop is the lighting strength or the fact I top up water daily by a jug not ATO???

I wish I could put a before and after picture of my tank on here. I rarely did maintenance for 3 years and it showed. 2 months ago I started a daily maintenance routine and my tank looks amazing. 80% once every 3 months in my 200 gallon tank. I change my carbon and gfo at the same time. i know it's way better to do smaller changes much more frequently but i refuse to be a slave to my tank and already feel like i am even at that.

i've had the tank over 2 years now and my corals and fish are fine ... after 2.5 months the corals start getting unhappy and pop right back up after the water change ... i can't get anemones to stay alive to save my life but everything else is a-okay. also, i dose my tank with vodka ... 10ml doses 4x a day. i get a lot of red algae still but the green and hair algae is gone. wish i could keep bta's alive ... ugh

Yeah, I think it's a good idea. :) Although it is possible to just get started on saltwater, and it might be more cost efficient to go straight ahead rather than experiment with freshwater then ultimately switch (unless you actually like freshwater). Generally though, most people recommend starting with freshwater, as it has less components to fuss about, but gives you the bare basics of aquarium hobbies, while also having more choices for hardy livestock

I know this was visually shown, but having a physical (or phone reminder) calendar with reminder dates can go a long way to making you honest with your maintenance, keeping the box to your old bulbs and writing the date on them helps you remember when you actually installed them, and then something as simple as a piece of tape on your RO/DI canisters that says when the last time you replaced each component can do wonders. While I will agree actually testing things is ideal, but testing can very often be something that you slack on as well, at least seeing a date has helped me more often than than not to remind me to change (or at least test) various filters.

I keep a pair of seahorses, a pipefish and a royal gramma in a 36 gallon bowfront soft coral/macro tank with a 20 gallon long sump system. Seahorses because of their vulnerability to bacterial infections need excellant, low nutrient water. They are however a heavy bioload fish with inefficient digestion of a high protein, omega rich food. For that reason I do (3) 7 gallon water changes every week (which is 42%), along with heavy skimming.

hey Ryan very good video as always my friend ... I've been experiencing an outbreak of algae in my tank, after almost 2 months with the ZEOvit system, reactor, stones, zeostar3, zeofood7, ZEObak and coral vitalizer, I assure you I have been very strict and I documented long before making the investment and start this way ... so far not lost any sps, all seem to be fine, but I really have not noticed great progress ... is also important to note that change my Kessil a360we to ATI system t5 ho ... seaweed is an algae such as color fine meat and velvet as a difficult to remove from each place where it grows, I use RED SEA pro test kit, alk-7.8 ~ 8.3, ca 410 ~ 430, 1280 ~ 1320 mg, phosphate .02, nitrates -undetectable...what do you think about this , could be a zeovit system and korallen zucht products??? after 2-3 months????
thanks so much....keep going!!!!!!!

I don't think that it matters what kind of tank you have. Get yourself on a regimen and write it down in your calendar make a checklist or whatever works for you. If it's recommended to do a water change 10% biweekly then that's what you. But look at your tank everyday , look at all your fish, look at the tank and on and on just get into the habit and as Nike used to say. Just do it

Could you do some videos highlighting the tanks in the office and the equipment you have on the different setups? I have a Red Sea Reefer 170 and would love to know how you are managing some of the smaller tanks you have in the office & what equipment you are using on them. Thank you!

looking for advice... I have salt spikes in my tank and combat with topping up with R/O water to bring it down.
The water evaporation is very quick in my tank so I'm constantly topping up with R/O water about 10 litres a week.
I have a 275L tank and 130L sump with a refugium and skimmer and I sugar dose once a day.
I'm trying to cut out water changes (I know there's debate on this whether is good/bad).
My question is, is the R/O top up sufficient enough to cut down on water changes?

Thanks guys, keep up the good work on these videos helping newbies like me a lot
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
+Jason Thomas Unfortunately water changes and top off solve two different problems. When water evaporates and turns into water vapor, it leaves behind everything in the water like salt, calcium, magnesium, nitrate, and phosphate. Without water changes some of these elements like phosphate and nitrate for example have the potential to build up in the tank elevating their levels and causing potential issues. Top off simply replaces the evaporated H2O, but won't do anything for the other elements that were left behind by the evaporation with the exception of diluting them to a point.

I noticed you guys used carbon in a media bag for this build. Curious why you chose this route over a reactor, considering one of your earlier videos showed how rapidly a reactor removes contaminants vs a standard media bag.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
+StrangeDejavu Good catch! The only reason we are using a media bag instead of a reactor is because we are running the Zeovit system. Korallen-Zucht recommends against running carbon in a reactor while utilizing the Zeovit system. Otherwise we'd be using a reactor for sure.

since July of 2015, I have done 3 30% water changes, tank is not a high demand tank, I had a huge algea problem that finally cleared up 3 months ago, levels are spot on except dkh, high 7, I use reef crystals, just added 2 acropora and an Acanthastrea on top of the few softies and trumpets I already had in the tank, also added more livestock 2 months ago, nitrates less than 2, thanks for hooking me up with Austin Aqua Farms, and also Battle Corals, will be getting me a Bliss this week

+BulkReefSupplyCom it's a redsea reefer 350, redsea filter socks, tlf carbon reactor, aquamaxx cone s co-1 skimmer and a marinepure plate in the sump. I use a maxspect gyre xf-130 and a new jebao pp-8 for flow. 2 kessil a360we's at 65% max for lighting.

+Kings Reef What type of filtration are you running?
SS S
SS S - 8 years ago
+Kings Reef Also check the TDS of your source water. I've been having algae issues for months and now I'm thinking it is from my budget RO/DI system. If you have algae you have nutrients even if your tests show zero (Mine has always shown 0 phosphate but my cyano and GHA tell me otherwise).
Kings Reef
Kings Reef - 8 years ago
+BulkReefSupplyCom I'm going to try feeding every other day for a bit and see if it helps. the problem is that I really don't feed that much to begin with. I'm kinda stumped on why the cyano showed up in the first place.
