I have flatworms but I don't have any sps coral yet, the tank has only been up for 1.5 months. Is there such a thin as harmless flatworms (I feel like mine try to eat copepods)? If not, would keeping the tank coral free for 45 days get rid of them?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
There may be some types of flatworms that don't eat SPS corals, but identifying exactly which ones are which is probably very difficult. Not all flatworms eat corals, in which case not having corals in general may not be an effective eradication method. Check out the reef hobbyist forums like Reef2Reef.com and ReefCentral.com to see what others are doing for flatworm removal/control. :-)

From what we've read and seen, there really isn't much in the way of a "cure". We've had this pest once in our offices and haven't seen them since losing corals and running infected tanks fallow for long periods of time.

I've dipped all the corals that went into my tank but despite my best efforts my tank has been completely infested with vermetid snails; not the big ones in the video, but thousands of small ones. They are e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e. I am starting the process of breaking down and rebuilding the tank. I will quarantine all corals (and fish) from this point on.

I was curious if you use coral dip on live rock
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
Sure, you probably could but I would be pretty concerned with contaminating the tank with the coral dip. Many coral dips use chemicals that can kill inverts (copepods, amphipods, shrimp, etc...) If you couldn't remove that completely from the rock, you may run the risk of it seeping into your tank. :-)
Nick Marchese
Nick Marchese - 7 years ago
Is there a better/ easier way to remove vermetid snails?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
I think some reefers have had success with certain "beaked" fish like triggers, who can pick at the snails and bite through the sharp shells. But most aren't very coral friendly, so I just break them off as best I can or use bone cutters to cut them off the rocks. :-)

You young kids seem to dip and medicate everything! Bit like you medicate your kids, lol. As an old timer, I really don't agree with all this sterile bollox. About the only things you don't want are fire worms, and sps eating nudi's or flatworms. The natural approach is the way to go, you know, like in the sea!? All this crap I hear about BRISTLE WORMS, oh heavens.... They are f'ing great in your reef, just like earth worms, you know, in the real world ;0)) If I get nudi's or flatties, then my wrasse's take care of them, you know, like in the sea ;0) Don't get me wrong, if I have a colony which is infested, then I will dip it, but honestly folks, GO THE NATURAL ROUTE. Good luck :)))))))))

My pests are hairy green mushrooms. Tried scraping them off the rocks, and more grew back from the tiny pieces left behind. Starting to look like a shag carpet in my tank. Thinking of turning the rocks around to see if they will shrink away. Anyone have an idea to help?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
Oh no! You could remove them from the light source by spinning them, but that may not guarantee that they will be gone for good. Some people have good luck with Kalk-paste or Aiptasia-X. If you do attempt this approach, it may be best to use the medication on only a few at a time. This is because Kalk can raise pH and may throw off Alk/Ca in large doses.

BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
They are actually pretty good algae grazers, but I have heard stories of them eating SPS corals. There are a couple things you could do. First, I would start by manual removal - this will be the safest bet. Your other option could be to introduce a fish like a puffer or trigger that might eat them, but your other inverts and maybe even corals could be at risk. If it were me I would just try to keep them at bay by removing them manually.

Question, I bought 2 clown fish from LFS, one of them got sick after a few days and made the second sick. Long white feces, not eating.... They seemed to have hexamita. I moved them to a quarantine tank from my DT and treated them with METRO, but it was too late and they died. I was told to leave my Display tank fish less for 2 to 6 weeks to make sure that any parasite in the tank starve. How long do YOU recommend to leave the DT fish less? I'd rather leave it empty for a while than using meds. Thank you for you answer!

I actually kinda like the look of that tank that had a lot of Mushroom corals! I love softies and LPS, I love to watch them move in the water. My tank picked up a massive bristle worm infestation one time. Anytime something moved you'd see a bunch of them scurry around. Ended up having to dip all the corals, new rock and sand and restarted the tank with some seed water and so far knock on wood I haven't seen a single one! Now if I could just get my corals to grow! so im pretty new to the hobby and your vids have helped me a lot! I'm facing a new issue that i'm perplexed by. A few months ago i purchased two cleaner shrimp to put in my 65 gallon, they mysteriously disappeared over night after proper acclimation. I bought two new ones yesterday and again, i woke up today and they were gone. I also have a blood shrimp that although hides all the time i know its alive. I don't have any fish that would be eating them and i don't think there's any pests since the blood shrimp is just fine. Any idea what could be going on here?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
Hmmm, that's usually how long I do it for give or take. It might not hurt to check the difference in salinity between the bag and the tank too.
Dan_of_Earth
Dan_of_Earth - 8 years ago
+BulkReefSupplyCom that's what I do in the bag. I do it over the course of like a half hour. Too short?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
Are you drip acclimating, or acclimating in the floating bag? I like to float the bag in the tank, and add a small amount of aquarium water every 15 minutes or so. This way you can introduce the critter to the change in chemistry, as well as keep the temperature in the bag constant.
Dan_of_Earth
Dan_of_Earth - 8 years ago
+BulkReefSupplyCom right, im going to by another today and ill do a slower acclimation. other than that any suggestions? Or can i just not have these shrimp haha
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
It's a theory, but some folks think that you can introduce an invert to a tank prior to a high nutrient level, and as the level rises over time, the invert becomes slowly acclimated to the higher levels. I haven't tested it yet, so I can't say for sure that it is true but anecdotally speaking it makes sense.
Dan_of_Earth
Dan_of_Earth - 8 years ago
That's what i thought, but i never see my blood shrimp. He comes out like once a month, i forget i even have him half the time. So i have no way of really knowing if its him or not. I honestly haven't tested my nitrates in a while, they are always on the high end though. But if nitrates were an issue wouldn't the blood shrimp or my corals and nem show signs
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
Interesting! Have you noticed your blood shrimp showing any aggression? It's possible he may be attacking the scarlets. Do you know what your nitrate level is?

I'm starting my new tank with BRS Pukani to avoid pests, but have a smaller established tank that has been running for a little less than two years that I plan to transfer to the new one when I'm sure it cycles completely. My question is do I need to worry a lot about pests being introduced from my original tank because it was started with live rock from my lfs? Of the pests you listed the only one that I have ever encountered in two years are bristle worms. If so are there any methods to dip a piece of live rock that is encrusted in sps/zoas? Or would you recommend completely fragging the corals off and not using the rock as is?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
If you haven't noticed any pests in that tank you might be ok, but I would consider fragging the corals off if you want to be 100% safe.

Hi Ryan. Welcome back and congratulations on the birth of your son!.... I don't know if anyone has raised this question yet, but I feel I need to ask after recently putting my hand in my tank and experiencing my first nasty electrical shock!! 1) Is the BRS160 protected against stray voltage and if so how? 2) Except for heaters which are all AC current, would I minimise my risk by using DC current equipment only 3) Is there a risk of stray voltage from DC equipment? and finally 4) Do you have any plans on doing an informative video on this topic to prevent fellow reefers from experiencing what happened to me or God forbid even worse? Thank you in advance.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
Hey there Brian! Happy to hear you are ok. Our number one recommendation for tank safety is having the system on a ground fault circuit interruptor. I like to use the GFCI breakers. They are more expensive and may require an electrician to install depending on your experience, but they are quicker and easier to install in my opinion than a few GFCI outlets. Prior to us installing the 160 we had an electrician come in and install a few in our panel. DC powered items will still likely give you a shock. Amps are your biggest concern, however with DC pumps they do usually offer a lower voltage.

Good suggestion! Bob has some great points. I have a culture of tiger pods I've had at home for a few years. They are pretty undemanding, i simply feed them a bit of flake food every so often and would be what I would suggest for getting started with them.
Keagan Wilson
Keagan Wilson - 8 years ago
Maybe I can help I breed them with the best are triger pods which are the adult kind, you can buy them almost any saltwater store online is kind of a gamble, to keep them they don't require much they will eat the algae in the tank and they also eat phytoplankton which are a pain in the butt to put in the tank because they add lots of nitrate when having them put them in a refugium the best is a hang on refugium because they enter safely in the tank I hope this helps!

I've used coral RX for about a year now on over 15 sps frags and have only had one hitch hiker stay on a frag. That was an sps crab. After reading the forums i was 50/50 on keeping it. I ended up traded that frag to my LFS for some store credit.

TBH QT's are why out of the budget... i'd rather spend that money on a couple new Radion pro gen 4... maybe once i get them (blackfridaysale hopefully) i can just the gen 3 on a QT.

Most are, but there are some bad apples out there. Red bugs are a great example of a copepod that eats acropora and can grow into plague proportions in the reef tank.

What would be the best way to kill zoas that are taking over an entire rock? Would spreading kalkwasser on the zoa head do the trick? Or maybe a simple scissor cut to the head? I would assume that may leave toxins in the water if I did cut them..
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
If possible I'd recommend fragging them off the rock. That way you have some frags you can trade with other hobbyists or your local fish store. If that's not possible, then kalk will be your best bet :)

I removed most of my monti's to a quarantine tank. And used a soft bristled tooth brush to remove the nudibranchs and eggs.
What can you recommend for fighting MEN.
If possible please give in depth details of where to get/ use the products. The video went by this very quick.
Thanks guys. You rock.

Thanks guys. I had a feeling that was the answer. I have been doing that a little at a time.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
Unfortunately these are some of the most difficult pests to eliminate. The best treatment in our experience seems pretty extreme, but it's a necessary evil in this case. Your best bet is to frag off a small healthy piece of each montipora that you can absolutely guarantee has no eggs or nudibranchs on it, and put the frags in a quarantine tank/ Then, throw the rest of the montipora out - you can grow them back using the frags you made after you've taken care of the nudibranchs. Make sure that all the montipora in the aquarium is removed or killed with kalk paste, and let the tank sit montipora-free for 2-3 months. During this time the nudibranchs in the tank will starve to death.

I am gonna try to do a Saltwater tank. I can afford a 25-30 gallon tank. How many fish should I get.
goodall1bay
goodall1bay - 8 years ago
Stay away from fish with high metabolism ; such as tangs or Angels . First they need loads of space and second they eat a lot and require large systems . Plus many other reasons , 30 gallons is tiny and I would say keep a pair of clowns and nothing else, maybe some snails or a few dwarf hermit crabs

I suggest doing research finding out each fish's parameters, clownfish are always a solid first fish. Just look up each fish and you'll see. Your local fish store should also be able to answer these and other typical questions.

I have to say i stick with REVIVE dip. Do you feel that sand gets old? Does it need to be replaced
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
I like Revive a lot as well. When it comes to sand, I keep a shallow bed and I like to siphon it clean every water change. On thicker sand beds in really old tanks that haven't been cleaned this could be a concern however. :)

What, no mention of the dreaded aceol planaria flatworm? I hate these things. How can I manage them once I have them, RT
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
Good call! We talked about when we were brainstorming pests to cover in the video, it must have slipped my mind. I have had the best luck using Flatworm Exit from Salifert to eradicate them, but you do need to perform it multiple times to break the egg-juvenile-adult life cycle. That's a great question for RT in the 52 FAQ.

I certainly have followed all of those you've mentioned, with the exception of quarantine tanks (i only have a 20 gal long). My main evaluation is inspecting the tank the corals are in, and each frag in that tank as much as possible. I believe that's the MOST IMPORTANT step to introducing the corals. Fyi, i'm a reef rookie (going on 2 months only).

about a year ago I bought various micro fauna including "Beneficial" bristle Worms from ipsf.com what are your thoughts on them. I have never had any negative impact that I can tell on my corals. just wanted you opinion on them
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
Bristleworms are great detrivores and good members of any cleanup crew. Care needs to be taken around them though since getting pricked by one can be a really uncomfortable experience. In most systems that have a well managed nutrient load, their population remains small and manageable. In "dirtier" tanks however their population can get out of control.

We'll be covering fish disease next week, but the key to ich is preventing it initially with a good QT procedure and a high quality fish food. Outside of that, medicating with copper in a separate quarantine tank is likely your best bet.

Let me see if I got this right: That Bayer insect killer is not an aquarium product sold in reef stores, it is a common insecticide for household use? The same thing we use to spray cockroaches and spiders?
If so, how much should we use?
Can we use any brand or just this particular one?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
Yeah, mainly. It's tough to say for sure which are safe. This particular type of Bayer has shown the best results and is recommended by most hobbyists that use it.
John John
John John - 8 years ago
+BulkReefSupplyCom
I suppose the reason for you not suggesting any other brand is because there hasn't been proof yet of some other product that works the same but is still harmless to the coral. Right?
I hope I can find this product in my country. I'm sure it works better and kills more things than any other coral dipping product you'll find in a reef store.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
Yup, that's right. Sounds ridiculous doesn't it? It works super well though. You will want to use Bayer Complete in the blue bottle. This thread is also great to reference:
