4:26 notice the fan on the floor. They making a killing off of these engines and have their employees working in a hot ass warehouse. Damn, at least put some a/c out there you cheap bastards. It's a tax write off. Then again, you want to give yourselves a huge bonus at the end of the physical year to zero out that tax to income gap, why waste some of your bonus money on keeping the shop cool for them employees. I mean, who are they to want a comfortable work environment.

I’d love to know how much of that 627 horse power makes it to the water and how many hours they last? Marine engines are always working hard. Like a loaded truck in passing gear up a hill. Well maintained gasoline EFI marine engines that are mostly kept under 75% of rated rpm will last about 5000 hours. Add boost and you cut the life to less than half.

90 K each engine....just not worth it, even if money is not an option. 45 K be a fair price, about 700 for each horse power.

Mercruisers brake down more often than Volvo pentas... Theres a reason why for example Azimut uses their poddrives in their S series and their Atlantis series boats. Their reliable and efficient and has excellent handling. "I was really excited about the company until I found out Volvo bought them" That besically says everything about your comment.

Nice. Now also design and market a small 250 Hp lighter cheaper reliable motor for the average boater.... Joining with Volvo good move. Maybe run a toothed gilmer belt down to prop shaft from crank and lose all those gears and 90° zf box . Also go back to normal shift dogs in lower in low hp motors. A simple affordable 5.3 LS GM block natural aspirated raw water cooled would shave $$$$$ off mfg costs .
Dealer support and warranty a big concern. Good luck . Shalom

When I first heard of these being made with a "Cadillac " V8, I cringed !the 4.6 Cobra design that Ford copied from Ferrari , would have been an infinitely better platform... did they ever change that INSANE starter location?( under the intake manifold, bathed in oil,  inside the lifter valley ?I don't know anybody who owned a 4.6 Caddy  that didn't hate it.

idk, 270,000$ seems like alot for just 2400 horsepower of inefficient over stressed outboard motors

at what point do you just give up on this and go with a real inboard single motor with better efficiency 5/6/7 motors?
Gregg Vandenbosch
Gregg Vandenbosch - 6 years ago
All this speculation and guessing about drivetrain efficiency. Just do the math. At BEST each gear change is 95% efficient (depending on the type of gear, and assuming very little speed reduction). From the output shaft of the motor, I counted three straight cut gears, the ZF transmission, one straight cut torque splitter, and two bevel gears on the lower unit. Assuming the transmission is 95% efficient (big assumption), that gives 0.95x0.95x0.95x0.95x0.95x0.95x0.95 or approximately 70% efficient best case and 428hp at the prop. I'm not making any judgement on the design merits, only putting some numbers behind the speculation. I'm guessing a vertical shaft outboard gearing is 85-90% efficient for reference. Also for reference, in an automotive application a transmission and differential are 80-85% efficient at best.
Gregg Vandenbosch
Gregg Vandenbosch - 5 years ago
Well then 890+ hp for the power unit is quite impressive! I happen to really like it. Reference the form factor for Hellcat engine, but packed into an outboard!

They have a revolutionary invention called an inboard/outboard, uses an iron block v8 truck engine and does not need all this complex gearing/custom parts.. Every gear wastes energy and efficiency, that's why outboards have not used a setup like this before. Also supercharging and turbocharging is great for cars that need the power for a few seconds to accelerate but with a boat you need constant power, I would be real skeptical about the longevity of these car engines being used for boating..

Ok love the outboard for design, sound, and hp of course, but also the options it brings to the water. The 627 is not a boat anchor unlike over marketed mercury, they put a corvette with a zf transmission, and like dunderogbrak the gearcase isn't Seven Marine's either. Either way this is an awesome innovation and they can own that. Infact, they only should advertise it as an innovation on the water, after all they have achieved incredible hp to weight ratio. That was what the spokesman should have said. Look at the car companies calling fuel injection new. how about direct injection? its all old technology. The diesel engine was the first fuel injected engine ever. In somewhere around 1806. It was around 1890s rudolph diesel made the first direct injection. The whole world is educated. So why do these manufacturer's still think they are fooling people like the car companies flat out lying calling it "new technology" ?

Deep Bass
Deep Bass - 6 years ago
Brilliant! I wonder if the transom on my bass boat could handle the weight. Methinks the C/G may also be a little high. These days, horsepower is pretty much determined by how much boost the lower end can stand. I'm sure the ECU is custom for this thing, and therefore you can dial HP up and down depending how large your attachments are.

Definitely an outboard motor tailored for the rich, that or some governments. Don't think there gonna get many customers in the sport fishing market, maybe some in the commercial fishing segment. I know some commercial salmon fishermen in Alaska do like outboards, because they can remove and take the engines home for the season, while the boat is in dry dock.

The Corvette and the Cadillac CTS-V don't have the same engine like you say at 3:20. The Cadillac uses a non forged 6.2L "LSA" making 556hp with a small 1.9L TVS supercharger vs the Vette which uses a fully forged 6.2L "LS9" with a 2.3L TVS supercharger and titanium valves/ rods making 638hp. Huge difference in price and performance.

7:50 he mentions putting 627hp through the gearset. We also don't know how this was edited either there may be also be language barriers considering this channel is an Italian channel,Your technical references on the GM product whilst correct cannot also be fully covered in a 12minute segment and leave time to talk about the rest of the product, do you think he is trying to deceive people?
TurboDieselDan
TurboDieselDan - 6 years ago
He is clearly talking about the $11k 556hp Mexico built version found in the CTS-V and not the $25k 638hp hand built version built in the USA stuffed with titanium internals and a larger blower. Calling it a Corvette engine is a blatant lie, he could of simply said this is the 556hp engine from the 08-14 Cadillac CTS-V and leave the LS9 powered Corvette out of the conversation unless he is talking about using the forged, titanium, 2.9L blown LS9 found in the $100k ZR1.

Chrismayo1981 Don't feed the troll and never trust an edited comment. Of course turbodieseldans word caries more weight than the owner of seven marine. And of course in such a short video aimed at the general public he cant go into the all of the differences between the LSA and the LS9 engine, but the point is the 627hp outboard is the LS9 and the 527 is the LSA base model and the core components are the same, Oh noes one has forged rods i guess Rick Davis doesn't know shit or whats in the blocks he buys in mass quantity from GM and must be an idiot or a conman! But fuck it Dan knows more than this guy who started the company and is here to liberate us from such misinformation, the core engine design is the same which is what was clearly implied. You must be a real fun guy to hang out with Dan!

Twin pinion gear case is not a "unique" design to Seven Marine. It's a several decade old invention first used by HD race gearcases. It works really well and originally intended to provide less hydrodynamic resistance so he's right about that, trying to portray it as their own invention however is total asshattery.

dunderogbrak - 6 years ago
It's not unique to outboards either. Mercury built twin pinion, even TRIPLE pinion Super SpeedMaster gearcases for their outboards already in the 60's. If you pick all the Seven Marine claims apart you'll end up with the conclusion they didn't really invent anything, but they picked and matched solutions together already invented by someone else. A little insight goes a long way. How many times do they say "Revolutionize" here? Blah.

Fascinating engine. If it turns out there is a large market for these huge power outboards, I suspect additional vendors will join the party. I wonder if some one is seeing what changes have to be made to these LS motors to run in a vertical orientation. If they can be adapted without to much trouble, then you would sea a significant efficiency gain, simplification, space savings, power gain, weight loss, and cost savings. 7 marine will need to do that to remain competitive in the future. And Volvo Penta is still Swedish. Chinese Geely owns only the Volvo car line, which they purchased from Ford which owned it for a while. Volvo AB is still 100% Swedish and makes buses, heavy trucks, marine and industrial engines and more. And I will still call gasoline gas here in North America. I will call it fuel or petrol or whatever term they use when I am visiting those areas which do not use the term gas or gasoline.

Have to be mindful of not over-powering the drive train...especially when you could have those "Out of water Experiences" when the prop(s) lose resistance then suddenly get it back... That makes a LOT of Shock to the drive train...
I am sure they engineered a "margin of safety"...but as you increase the HP and Torque you 'use up' that safety margin... Not to mention the higher stress on the engine internals from the increased boost... All combining for less 'dependability' and more maintenance...and no one wants to get stranded with a dead motor miles from shore...especially not "Rich Guys" in their Very Expensive boats! (smile)

As an outboard Enthusiast and a bit of a engineer here at home I've always been intrigued by the seven marine outboard after seeing this video I have to say wow an American company with the Ingenuity to take GM's very reliable V8 put a marine cooling system drive system and a supercharger in a compact easy to service outboard configuration with a custom looking and sounding exhaust system Cal and LED lighting I think we're going to see this motor dominate The large boat Marketplace, starting to see some of the big-name large boat / yacht manufacturers embracing outboard power as well and it only makes sense they're easy to maintain in a large boat configuration and you don't have the toxic environment inside your boat from an inboard engine and drive. Maybe 10 years from now I can afford to buy a used one.

Also why are you so finicky about what they call fuel? Petrol is the same. It’s from petroleum. I don’t see Americans saying “it’s petroleum”

Like he said target the Pagani style so that rich guy can color match his car and boat for the extra ego. My Yamaha 250s get my 30ft boat every where I need to go to catch the same fish in the ocean. But only cost $13,000 a piece. An rigging is simple. Run fuel an power. Your saying I have to run a glycol cooling system an who knows what else. This is how you over engineer an complicate things for no reason.
Jose Manuel Martinez

The reason for cooling with a glycol solution is pretty obvious . to avoid running corrssive salt water thorugh the engine and it does not bring any complication, or at least not more than what is present in any ordinary car, you seem to be quite envious about the fact that you have not reeached teh level in life as to be able to afford those beautiful engines, neither do I  but i have amore generosu soul and like the fact that others do can have those marvels ..........

You didn’t mention anything about the outboard’s environmental impact compared to other outboards. And what about an outboard jet type propulsion to cut down on marine life damage? Another thing about outboards is the convenience for repair. How easy is it to service? How do you get it on and off, with a crane? Is it OK for it to be on a boat that is docked and therefore with the propeller submersed for long periods? What is the life expectancy of this outboard? Is it equally at home in ice cold waters as it is in warm tropical waters?
松田もしくろす

DL- Seems as a consumer, I need to do my own homework. Emission standards are vastly improved for outboards from what they once were. I apologize if I sounded alarmist in any way. I have two outboards and they do have decals on them- I looked. But one outboard is never enough so we are all looking for another one to add to our collection.
DL
DL - 6 years ago
If you knew a little more about outboards, you wouldn't ask those questions. There's an emissions decal shown on the engine that every certified tech will recognize, regardless of make. Every. Single. One.
Every owner of a new boat engine has seen at least one.
Even people shopping for one online have seen it.
It very clearly answers your question, yet you still asked the question.

the Verado is 668lb 350hp also you are not considering power transfer to prop ...the 627 will have allot more power loss and allot more cost in maintenance and i have seen the test runs these motors are dogs out of the hole and you have to consider the GM v8 is not built with the idea of running up to 6000rpm then holding it for hours and at 6000 rpm the GM 6.2l will consume fuel moving all of the motor parts and all of the gears in the drive train .....You will see these on party boats but never on a working boat
