those look like seaworthy fins, not controllers... just sayin... great video tho.

Hey Jason, the Futures Controller's and Seaworthy Controllers are both a similar shape and share the same defining name a "contoller" The fins labeled simply as controllers are slightly larger than the sea worthy's and are constructed of fibreglass rather than the honeycomb construction used in the seaworthy controllers but all in all these fins are very similar and this video was shot when they were referred to as Sea Worthy Controllers. Hope this helps any confusion - Ashlon

Hey good review, I like your website. I like this board, I really think this might be what I'm looking for. I'm down sizing from a 7'6 and am looking for something wide and catches waves similar to a longer board, But will allow me to maneuver easily. I'm 5'11 and about 160lbs, do you think a 6 foot bean bag will give me what I need?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 7 years ago
Hey Louis, thanks for commenting. At your weight a 6'0 Bean Bag will float nearly as well as a longboard, if you are looking for a short board to shred the smallest of waves then you are on the right track.

what size do you recommend for someone 6' and 200 lbs? I am leaning towards the 5'10. I want something to compete with the longboarders out there on point breaks
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 7 years ago
Hey Jose, If you are looking to compete with longboards with minimal effort size up to the 6'0, if you don't mind keeping your board moving the 5'10 is within your range but will require you to build more speed on your own. Cheers - Ashlon

Hey Sally, better late than never ;) At your weight and considering the conditions you'll be surfing we recommend a 5'2 Bean Bag. Cheers, Ashlon

I've been riding a soft fish 5'8 and i live in Ventura. I personally surf small stuff and I really want one of these to be able to easily catch small mushy waves but to still go down the line!

Hey Sally, thanks for writing in. What other boards have you been surfing? Where do you surf? and what wave size do you intend to surf the Bean Bag on? Stoked to help you pick the right size but need you to answer a few questions first. Cheers - Ashlon

Hey Ryan, a 5'10 will provide enough float to catch any small wave you want while still being fun to ride and easy to turn.

REAL Watersports REAL Watersports I currently have a 7'6 fun board. I'd say I'm still beginner/ intermediate. I want something small so it's easy to transport and start working on turns, but also be able to catch a lot of the small waves we usually have. I appreciate the response!

I am 5-11 205 pounds . looking to put this on mar Christmas list. I currently own a morice cole dirty dingo thats 5-10 with about 33 L. I am looking for something for small waves and i like the bean bag. Im experienced and need the foam because i am a pretty big dude i am not the average skinny surfer. what size should i get? and will this board work in steeper waves like maybe hungtingon or newport? I can be surfing anywhere from San O to Ventura and want to makes sure this board will be useful in many conditions and locations.

Hey Isaiah, Thanks for writing in. The Bean Bag is very round, with nearly flat rocker. This gives it ton's of speed in weak surf but it does not work very well in steep waves, For a groveler in steep waves I reccomend the Lost Puddle Jumper Round Pin. http://www.realwatersports.com/surfing/surfboards/lost/puddle-jumper-round-pin

The Bean Bag likes to be ridden at a higher volume, at your weight I would go with the 5'6 http://www.realwatersports.com/lost-bean-bag-pu-poly-5-6

Hi, is Bean Bag good to learn surfing with? I've been learning on foamies & mini-mals. I can stand n ride straight 75% of the time. Can I continue learning with Bean Bag at my current skill level? I stand 5' 8.5" tall and weigh around 139 to 141Lbs. What size and volume should I ride on a Bean Bag? Thanks and great review!

Stoked to hear you have been progressing on bigger boards and are looking to get onto something shorter. The Bean Bag makes a great board for small waves, and learning the basics of riding a Short Board. It paddles really well and has effortless glide due to its flat rocker and very round outline. These qualities make it ideal for small waves but it is not the best for steep surf. The Bean Bag is designed to be ridden very short, at your weight the 5'2 would be a good size, This will be drastically different from what you are riding, expect this board to be much faster, easy to turn, and sensitive to your movements. Check out this board http://www.realwatersports.com/lost-bean-bag-pu-poly-5-2

Hi I'm looking to buy a 5'3 bean bag off of a friend. Kinda hesitant though since that seems sooo small. Thoughts? I'm 5'9 @ 168 pounds would it be a good fit for small waves in Byron Bay, NSW?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 8 years ago
Hey Reid, Thanks for writing in. The Bean Bag is a great board for small surf, and the 5'3 is a good size for your weight. If you are comfortable on short boards you will be stoked on how quickly the short rail line accelerates. If you are a beginner you should go bigger but if you know how to surf this will be a great small wave board.

Hi there. Great review. How do you think the Bean Bag would compare to the Fire Wire Baked Potato? I'm looking for something fun, loose and fast for really small waves. Any other boards that you think I should consider?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 8 years ago
Alex - "faster" is going to mostly depend on the wave conditions and rider skill. The Bean Bag sits lower in the water so will have a different feel from the more skatey Baked Potato. You'll be able to pump the Bean Bag up and down the wave face to generate speed, but it's not the type of board that's designed for the "Huntington hop" style of pumping to generate speed. Hope this makes sense. Stay stoked! -Chris Stellato, REALwatersports.com
Alex Ingram
Alex Ingram - 8 years ago
Thanks for the advice. That makes sense. Do you think that the Bean Bag would be faster once you are up and going? With the lack of concave in the Bean Bag, would go loose the ability to 'pump' the board?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 8 years ago
+Alex Ingram - thanks for your question. If all other things were equal like volume etc, the outline of the Bean Bag is going to be more efficient in small surf and ultimately have more low end than the Baked Potato. The Baked Potato has more curve in the outline so won't be as efficient. Also where the Baked Potato uses a double-concave-to-vee bottom contour, the Bean Bag is vee bottom the whole way, so the boards will have a slightly different feel with the Bean Bag rolling rail to rail a little easier and having a different feel underfoot. If you're searching for the most grovel power in small surf, go with the Bean Bag, and size it big, the vee bottom helps make all that foam feel less bulky. Hope this helps! -Chris Stellato +real watersports

Don't say "bottom" when talking about the tail end. "Bottom" is the surface that the fins are attached to, the opposite of the "deck". Why confuse things and use the obviously wrong terminology?

Great review! Question for you.
I'm 6'3" 205ish lbs and beg/int level surfer. I can get around and occasionally cutback on longboards (depending on the wave, larger is better) and I really like the idea of sizing way down into a groveler like the bean bag. I'm looking for a one board quiver for mostly summer east coast conditions to free up my ride and explore faster looser turns while still keeping some float, as I don't get out very often and am not a super strong paddler. Was thinking a 6' bean bag or a 6'2" Vernor Mini Simmons. Thoughts?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 8 years ago
+Biker Skater thanks for your question. You're looking in the right direction checking out boards that have a lot of float. The Bean Bag packs a ton of foam into a short, efficient package, and it's specialized for working in small, mushy waves. To get a little wider wave range, and more ability to tackle medium or bigger size waves, look at something that's a little more versatile, like a ...Lost LayZBoy (http://www.realwatersports.com/surfing/surfboards/lost/layzboy). It has a little more rocker, length, and curve in the outline to help when the waves are up, but is still a full-bodied shape that paddles and catches waves with ease. 6'8" - 7'2" LayZBoy would be the right size for you. No matter which board you're shopping, be generous with the volume and don't go smaller than 48L. Hope this helps! -Chris Stellato +real watersports

is it a good board for a begginer, i've been riding a 7'0 hybrid and now i'm looking for smaller board that i can transport anywhere and at the same time easy and fun to ride. i'm 5'7 feet and weight variates from 158 to 163 pounds.
i dunno if this board would fix better for me or the couch potato?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 8 years ago
+Ashley Zequeida thanks for the extra info. For the small, open faced waves and just crusing having some fun, the Bean Bag is your ticket to catching as many waves as possible. You'll probably want to switch to something different when the waves get over 4ft, but you're going to get maximum enjoyment from all the "average-weak" days with the bean bag. Your weight and skill level should look in the neighborhood of 5'5" - 5'7" Bean Bag. http://www.realwatersports.com/surfing/surfboards/lost/bean-bag
Hope this helps! -Chris Stellato +realwatersports

well i surf once a week, in acapulco on small open face waves (around 3 o 4 feet) but sometimes there are bigger waves of 6 ft and more.., and i just like to have some fun when I surf. I wouldnt like to imitate a pro surfer their skills are far from me.

I'm 12 years old 80 Pounds 4' 9" And I can ride a 7' 6" Longboard and have pretty much mastered paddling and everything on it. I tried out a 6'2" Fish and I could ride smaller waves with it. I don't want to buy something that I can't surf on at all but I want something a little more advanced. Are there any models you could recommend.

I'm considering purchasing a new board and am torn between the CI Average Joe, High 5 and Pod Mod as well as the Lost Couch Potato, LayZBoy or Bean Bag.  5'9" 200 lbs, novice - intermediate, surf year round in head high to knee deep  beach break mush in Jersey with a neutral - rear foot position.  Looking for a board that paddles easy and can catch a number of waves in the above conditions.  Nothing incredibly fancy as far as sharp turns or performance, just cut backs, bottom turns and running the line.  Have you any suggestions?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 9 years ago
@Sam Sung from the boards you listed, LayZBoy and High 5 have the most versatility and can still perform up to the head high surf you mentioned. For 200lb novice look for boards in the 43-45L range like a 6'2" LayZBoy: http://www.realwatersports.com/surfing/surfboards/lost/layzboy

You guys have a chance to compare it to the Average Joe? lookin for a Florida summer board. I.e. Small mushy junk. At 6'1" 180, what size would you recommend with the beanbag?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 9 years ago
@305Cohones The Bean Bag has tip-to-tip Vee bottom so it's going to roll rail to rail easier than the single-concave under the front 1/3 of the board on the Average Joe. For 180lb surfer in small FL surf, look at a 5'5" or 5'6" Bean Bag. Hope this helps! -Chris Stellato @REAL Watersports

Hey, quick question.  Thinking about picking one of these up, i usually ride a locally shaped board (think V2 rocket @ 27-28cL) and a 5'8 weekend warrior(around 29cL) i am 5'8 and around 165lbs.  Some guys are saying to shoot for a more foam because the V makes you sink in the water lower?   I was thinking around a 5'3 (32cL) or a 5'4 ( 33cL).
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 9 years ago
@Robert Luisi Thanks for your question. Probably a better way to say it is that the vee makes you sit lower in the water, not sinking! You're on point by saying you can get away with more foam than normal with the vee. I'm guessing you want this board to be your groveler for when the waves are too small for the weekend warrior. To get really good grovel power for your weight, you should have at least 33L of volume. A stock 5'3" Bean Bag is 33.25L and would work great for you. For your weight, I wouldn't go any bigger than 38L (5'6" Bean Bag). Hope this helps! -Chris Stellato @REAL Watersports

Would this be a good alternative to a longboard?  I really don't want to carry around a 10' longboard.

Yes, the Bean Bag is designed for small, mushy waves.  If you size it correctly, it is going to be a perfect substitute for a longboard and help you make the most of junk surf.  -Chris Stellato @REAL Watersports
