Im 6'3 and 210lbs.Im an intermediate surfer. My regular shortboards are 6'3 and 6'4I ride approx 39 - 40 L boards.Cant decide on the 5'11 or 6'0 puddle jumper stock dims?

REAL Watersports - 6 years ago
Hey Ryan, Go with the 6'0. It helps to add a few liters to your groveler for extra glide and paddle power. Cheers - Ashlon

hey I'm a beginner, I been surfing for a month now and I think I'm ready to buy my first board. I want to buy a board that i can grow in to. should i buy the puddle jumper or should I buy a fish or is there another board you recommend
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 7 years ago
Hey Brandon, at your weight and skill level the 6'0 would be the smallest we recommend to start with and you will likely catch more waves on a 6'2. As you progress you will be able to surf smaller boards but it will help a lot to size this board bigger so you can catch a ton of waves and get good at surfing.

Hey Brandon, We'd recommend the Puddle Jumper over the Fish as your first board, it's a little faster and easier to surf. Another option would be the Lost LayZboy, it has a more simple bottom shape that provides better stability and a much wider sweet spot so you don't have to worry so much about a perfect pop up. http://www.realwatersports.com/surfing/surfboards/lost/layzboy

ashlom, thanks for the info. I am thinking to get a rocket v3 or a hypto krypto to complement my paddle jumper.
which one would you recomend?
i am intermidiate this would be my 5th shortboard I ride.
thanks!!
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 8 years ago
Hey Francisco, Thanks for writing in. I would go with the V3 Rocket, since you have a Puddle Jumper you know you like how Matt Biolas' (...Lost) boards ride. The V3 is made by the same shaper and will have more similarities in overall board ride feel than the Hypto.

Good review, I have a 5,7 Paddle Jumper and I love it! Now I am looking to get a board for when is bigger than 3/4ft waves, I was thinking the Lost v3 rocket, do you guys have any suggestion? Thanks!
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 8 years ago
Hey Francisco, Thanks for writing in! The V3 Rocket is a great shape to cover bigger waves than your Puddle Jumper handles. For sizing on the V3, based on your current board I would go with a 5'10, You won't need as much paddle power to surf bigger waves, and you will be stoked on how well it holds at speed, and to steep faces. Keep up the stoke! - Ashlon Durham

When you say the puddle jumper is for smaller waves, what size are you talking About?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 8 years ago
Thomas - thanks for your question! The Puddle Jumper can easily tackle knee-high waves and sometimes even lower than that...the ultimate low-end depends on on surfer skill, wave shape and wave power, and how you size the board relative to your body weight. For the ultimate low-end performance, size the board with a little extra foam and go for a light weight construction like the Carbon Wrap. If you want to send us some details about your weight, skill level, and where you'll be surfing, we can help you select the perfect size: http://www.realwatersports.com/surfing/surfboards/lost/puddle-jumper Hope this helps! -Chris Stellato, REALwatersports.com

First off, love your videos! So helpful. Question I have is I am 6'0" Novice/intermediate surfer 220lbs. I surf in New England where the waves are mushy and range about 2-4 ft with a few days here and there that can get bigger than that. Beach breaks is what I surf due to where I am located in the NH area. Just bought a Puddle Jumper in carbon wrap that is 6'2" 22 1/2 2.88 at 46.3L. I have a ton of people telling me that it is waaay too big. I havent been able to get it in the water yet since it is flat flat flat here at the moment. Did I go too big? I tend to ride heavy on the front foot too. Also, I loved the review on the bean bag had I not bought the PJ i probably would have bought that in a smaller size like 5'9" or 5'10". Anyways thanks in advance!

REAL Watersports - 8 years ago
+roadrageracing1 - thanks for your questions! So first off, based on your weight, skill level, and waves you're surfing, you definitely didn't go too big. Foam is your friend in the novice/intermediate stage, plus you're surfing mushy waves and you are in the 220lb range, you want to pack a ton of float in so you can be successful and catch more waves.

Comparing the PJ to the Bean Bag, they are two completely different boards, truly worlds apart. Bean Bag is a retro-inspired cruiser, super-grovel focused and doesn't have much range into larger waves. It's an extremely fun board but it has a pretty specific use which is having tons of fun in small, mushy, slopey waves. It has tip-to-tip vee in the bottom contours.

Puddle Jumper has solid concave bottom contour, so pretty much the opposite of the Bean Bag. It is specifically designed for small wave surfing with a shortboard, turn-oriented approach. Has quite a bit more range than the Bean Bag into better waves. I think you can feel confident in your board choice, be sure to get a session in soon! Stay Stoked! -Chris Stellato +real watersports

Hey Guys , great video's love all the information and easy to understand. Only thing else I was hoping for was the optimum riding hight ?

I'll just ask here instead: I can comfortably say i'm intermediate, standing just under 6foot tall and 68kg

You think you might able to recommend what size I should be considering ?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 8 years ago
+Matt Duncan - Two totally different shapes that will feel worlds apart. Puddle Jumper designed as a grovel focused board whereas the Hypto Krypto is more of a hybrid. Much more low end on the Puddle Jumper, much more top-end on the Hypto Krypto. At the end of the day Puddle Jumper's low rocker and wide outline will make it more efficient in small surf. These boards are so different you could definitely have both in your quiver, Puddle Jumper as a groveler and Hypto Krypto as a daily driver. -Chris Stellato +real watersports

Oh one more Q, if you dont mind.
What kind of differences you reckon you would be looking at with a Puddle Jumper vs's Hypto Krypto ?
Matt Duncan
Matt Duncan - 8 years ago
Thanks for getting back to me - would most likely be an all rounder for Bali - & yes that does help quite a lot, thanks for taking the time!
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 8 years ago
+Matt Duncan thanks for your questions. Where will you be positioning this in your quiver- as a groveler or as an all-around "daily driver" board? If you're focusing this on small waves, I'd go 5'8" for your body weight (approx. 36.9L volume). If you're positioning this as more of a daily driver are willing to trade some small wave performance for the ability to take the board into "average" or "good" surf, 5'6" would be a better call (approx. 33.2L). Hope this helps! -Chris Stellato +real watersports

Cool review! I have a 5/10 PJ. I am 6/1 and weigh 175. I love this board. It paddles easy, gets in early and is just so sensitive and responsive. I've ridden tons of small wave boards, none have felt as tuned as this one.

Justin - Thanks for your question.  For your weight and skill level, I think you're looking at the right size with the 5'5".... Just a little more float than your current 30.20 L board and it will shred in the mushy beach break.  Hope this helps! -Chris Stellato @REAL Watersports

I have a 5'6 Lazy Boy 30.20L.  Want to upgrade to this board for some more performance, my standard shortboard is 5'10" V2 28.74 liters.
I weigh 160 and am 6'1"  lifelong surfer 37 years old lifeguard, mostly surf So Cal beach break.
What would you suggest, was thinking the 5'5" at 31.35L
Thanks for the help in advance. @REAL Watersports

I'm looking for a board that is easy to paddle, catch waves but still perform in the larger stuff. I'm torn between this and the Lost RV...  any further advice would be apreciated
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 9 years ago
@F Butcher Thanks for your question. The Puddle Jumper and the RV are designed for peak performance in mushy waves waist-high or similar, but you can still take them into bigger surf and have fun, especially if the bigger surf is more slopey and open-faced. While it is possible to surf these boards in overhead surf, it gets a little challenging because they are wide, flat, and stubby. If you want a design that can be surfed in knee-high mush but still perform in overhead surf breaking way off the beach, consider looking at the ...Lost E-Z Up: http://www.realwatersports.com/surfing/surfboards/lost/ezup

I surf in Rhode Island would you recommend this or Roberts Dream machine for a high performance Groveler I need a board that can go up to about shoulder to head and decently hallow.
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 9 years ago
@Scuurpro  Thanks for your question.  Both the Puddle Jumper and the Dream Machine are designed for peak performance in surf under waist high, but both have versatility into shoulder-head high waves and a surfer with the right skills can take them into this size surf no problem.  In my opinion both of these boards would perform well on the upper end of their wave range (one doesn't outshine the other in this case), so if you're more interested in one or the other you can buy with confidence knowing they will both still work when the waves pick up.  Hope this helps! -Chris Stellato @REAL Watersports

Hi mate, about to order a pj, I ride 40 litres and catch waves comfortably, am 6'0 & 191 pound, high intermediate- low advanced ability, was thinking a 6'1 @ 45 litres or would you suggest lower?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 9 years ago
@Masonmaddo If 6'0" or larger puddle jumper, go with Futures Controllers (comes stock with these boards from REAL). If smaller than 6'0", go with a size Large 5-fin set (comes stock with these boards from REAL).

If you're looking to upgrade to performance fins, check out the Lost Seaworthy or the Roberts Large sets from Futures:

@Masonmaddo  If you ride 40L board as your go-to shortboard in average-good surf, and you're looking for the Puddle Jumper to work as your groveler / small wave board, 45 Liters sounds like the right volume for you.  Get ready to have lots of fun on the small days!  -Chris Stellato @REAL Watersports
