I have a eBay purchase 4 stroke, 1.5HP Petrol Power Outboard Engine and mounted on my kayak. Seller says 20km/h with 3 people... I must weight more than 5 people because my kayak was going at 8km/h on full throtle. I use watersnake 24lb with 50ah lithium battery now and it travells at 6km/h. much more peacefull.

The biggest problem with this motor is the noise (it's loud - too loud for noise restricted areas) and low performance versus price. Top speed, not the slower continuous cruising speed, averages about 3mph - about as fast as the typical person walks. Could take a long time to cross that lake or travel that river.

That brand uses a very weak and cheap pull rope return spring and they break very easily if pulled too hard. Be ready to be stuck with a broken spring that has come loose from it's cheap plastic mounting.

I put this exact same motor on my kayak mounted between the outrigger and the kayak.
I cut shortened and welded the shaft around 7'' shorter as it was way to long for what I needed. I also put a custom made exhaust extension that points the exhaust out and away from your ears, as you mentioned it is damn noisy.
Half of the trouble with this little motor is, the plastic propeller flexes, you can upgrade the propeller to a cast aluminium one for under $30.00 and you will get a little more speed, around 15 kls ph top speed. The motor is very reliable but sucks a lot of juice, on a calm day out in the kayak I will only get around two kilometers out of a tank.
This little motor is great for a kayak as it's light, a proper 2 to 4hp outboard motor is way to heavy for my kayak and this no brand is 5 times cheaper.

of course this is a large weed whacker motor, with a bicycle twist grip control, and an OB lower unit. Tanaka made an even smaller OB ( 30 cc) using what was then a bicycle motor ( bike bug) in the 70's. The noise is opressive.. but it works.

Mine is so noisy you need ear muffs for any journey longer than 10 mins. It leaks oil badly from the stump, overheats and generally is not for for purpose. I would avoid and go for a proper outboard or electric outboard for trolling. You literally troll other river/ lake users with this motor. It is far from fantastic....

The propeller is too deep in the water for the boat to plane.

Adjust the tube so it is just below the bottom of the boat and you will get much better performance.

I think I would generously rate this 3/100. Awful noise. Poor fuel economy. Gross, stinky two stoke cycle engine. Poorly designed gas tank and fuel bottle leads to spills on the water.
For certain that motor is priced very low, but I personally would get no enjoyment out of all that racket.
I have a Honda 2.3 hp, so obviously I'm quite spoiled, but I shopped around and found one slightly used at a great price. My motor will provide me with decades of trouble free reliable enjoyment and amazing fuel economy. BTW mine has always started on the first pull.

1.) You never rev brand new engine. It needs at least 10 minutes of working on idle. After that you usually need to break in engine for 8-10 hours.

2.) You don't rev engine without any load !

Here are some links for these 2-Stroke outboard engines, LOTS of options to choose from. For kayaks the 2-2.5HP models are powerful enough, however, for larger canoes or small boats I would highly recommend the 3.5HP or even the 6HP models: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1311.R1.TR10.TRC0.A0.H0.X2+stroke+out.TRS0&_nkw=2+stroke+outboard+motor&_sacat=0

All two-stroke motors should be banned worldwide. It's easy to do, we have replacement technology in electric motors and new battery technology. No machine is clean in it's creation and production but they don't have to cause polution every second they are in operation.
Gregory Timmons
Gregory Timmons - 5 years ago
Yes. Only industry should be able to guiltlessly pump pollution into our atmosphere on a grand scale. Two stroke racing go karts should be extinct and that will offset so we don't have to pass legislation giving industry full reign to poison the planet. Sorry about the 10K you have invested in your shifter kart mate.

Quakes Outdoor Adventures air cooled 2 strokes run great at varying high and low rpms. But sustained high rpms generate more more heat than air cooled 2 strokes can dissipate. That’s why pretty much all 2 stroke outboards are water cooled. Because boats require constant high RPM

So at 1 liter per 45 minutes, its MARGINALLY more fuel efficient than my 75Hp Merc 2 stroke pushing my 26 footer along at 5 to 6 knots, we use around 2 1/2 liters per hour at that speed. However these look like a great cheap way of getting on the water (the Merc was around $10,000), just wondering if you could put a additional muffler on to cut some of the noise down, I would imagine it would get annoying after a very short time
Mike OBrien

That was one of the DRASTICALLY marked up listings for that 2-stroke outboard, you can find them regularly for $160-$300 (depending on HP, brand and model). Here's a 2.5HP model (probably manufactured in the same facility in China, where almost all of these cheap engines come from) for $170 Shipped: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Seadog-2Stroke-2-5HP-outboard-motor-engine-superior-performance-propeller-kayak/223164559198?epid=8024243587&hash=item33f5a4ef5e:g:8dwAAOSwQt9brFsT

Just as a curiosity. A few hours ago I took the dust and spider webs from my preferred toy. A 50cc moped that haven't been started since last year (Summer).

Thankfully for me I follow my own advise. I simply open the fuel petcock shake it a bit to start the fuel flow. After a couple of kicks there she was back to all it's 50cc 2 stroke glory.

The ritual never failed in this past 3 years. BTW the mix has 2 stroke synthetic other than that it's the fuel from last year. ;-)

Just spent half a day cleaning out my Mariner outboard (1970's) carb after leaving it for 10 months.

So far so good, motor still starting/running fine. The reason i got this one was the weight, space/storage as that hull is a old De havilland sail boat and some times when the wind drops off i can just use that motor to get back to shore (beats rowing), so even at the worse if i tipped over and ruined the motor it would be a small loss compared to normal outboard.

how hard is it to replace the propeller and are they readily available, is there a sheer pin or dose it rely on the clutch as a safety,
Victor lawn mower years back made two styles of outboard motors, using the good old reliable two stroke motor, they had a propeller unit, and they also had a pump jet unit, the propeller version would push a 14" bond wood boat a little faster than rowing, probably 5 knots at best. I would like to see a 10 hour review, not sure how a free running motor will last whilst under continual load, as it is when pushing through water. good video hope to see more.
Simon Nadjarian
Simon Nadjarian - 6 years ago
There easy to get off (just a pin/screw to remove) but i havnt found a plastic replacement propeller to suit it yet only the alloy ones. Yes a replacement plastic prop is hard to find, but so far mine is still going fine so Ill cross that bridge when or if i ever break this prop.

Yes Simon It was just a small leak from the gearbox screw being a little loose during transit, all fixed.

Spend a little more and get a longtail kit. Pick your required HP and put a Honda or clone. Probably the best power per dollar and a real benifit is their shallow water and debris, mud etc ability. You can power boats with both ends pointed with a little fabrication and no need to install a transom.

hi mate I am just wondering how much full did u mix to your oil like how many ml of oil did u put in the full
crpth1
crpth1 - 6 years ago
Simon Nadjarian - A couple of tips. Use a decent 2 stroke synthetic oil. Advantage is that you can lower the oil ratio. Less carbon build up, smoke... Had a decent Iridium plug, Better start, smoother, less smoke & carbon, etc.
Notice the spark plug alone cost a considerable percentage of the entire engine. LOL :-) But believe it's worth.
Always carry extra plug and extra fuel/oil. :-)

Edit: A piece of copper pipe from the exhaust into the water will quiet the "thing" a lot. Reset the carb if such.

The plastic fuel mixing container i got in the box tells you to fill it up with unleaded fuel to the 485ml mark then add the oil (2 stroke) up to the 500ml mark on the bottle. It then says shake the bottle before pouring the the fuel mix into the tank. I did exactly that mix and it ran fine for the 45mins i was testing the motor.
