Watch out for the poor design of the leash holder. Mine has just failed and Red Paddle Co customer service has been pretty unhelpful. This particular part is bound to fail and gluing it back together will only work temporarily.

Is there an improved 2017 version of the Whip coming out? Have the Red Paddle 10.6 but it's not great in the surf for a novice like me. I might be able to benefit from a board like this.

We shall see over the next coming months. The 10'6'' does catch and ride waves but because the Whip has a more pulled in tail it really makes a difference in the surf. SUPboarder will be reviewing the new Red Paddle Co boards when there are release ASAP. Thanks Reuben/SUPboarder

It would probably surf pretty well do to the wider nose. But we haven't tried it yet. So if anyone has let us know...

In my opinion, the main reason for an iSup over a rigid one is longevity. If you surf nice sandy beaches your hard board may last, but if you surf pebble beaches, it can get damaged. Same as white water. In these cases, iSup lasts longer

In my opinion inflatable sups are only an option if you can´t store a rigid one. Specially if you wanna surf. I´ve tried some but I don´t think they are good out of flatwater conditions. I paddle and surf in the Canary Islands

Could really do with some advice on this, I know the Whip is designed for surf, but it would be very helpful to know how it performs on flatwater as i'm after a board I can learn to surf on but still paddle it everywhere?

Hi there, great review! I'm contemplating getting into SUP and looking for my first board. I'm 5ft6 and weigh around 73kgs. My intention is to use it for surf (once i've mastered the balance that is) on waves up to 3ft in height, but also require it to use on flatwater for general relaxing paddles on the coast, or up to 2-3 miles on a local river which leads out to the sea. Would the Whip be a better investment, or would I be better off with a 9"8 Ride? My dilemma is that the Whip is only good for surf (not going any distance), and the Ride is only good for general use (not surf)? Any help would be great! Thanks.

Hi Chris. What did you end up buying? I am looking to purchase a sup and have the exact same dilemma as you were. 78kg and 1.80m tall, landlocked surfer. Want a board mainly for surfing however there is a river running through my town leading to a beautiful nature reserve, and would like to be able to paddle on it on weekends when I can't make it to the coast. What did you choose between the ride and the whip and what was your experience? Many thanks.

iSUP's have more rail thickness so they will have more overall volume. So they will be more stable compared to the same size hard board. The only thing that some people find is with an iSUP they do flex compared to a hard board which can make them feel a bit unstable, if you're not use to paddling an iSUP

Thanks Reuben! I paddled a 9'6" rigid (more surf orientated) the other day and found it too unstable. The 10' rigid seemed much more user friendly. Do inflatables tend to be more stable than rigids?

Hi Chris, Sorry for the delay on getting back to you. You are a very similar weight to me. I would be happy to paddle the whip on flat water but for the length of paddles you are saying it will be slow. The 9'8'' is good all round board in the surf too, not as good as the Whip but still has a nice tail shape. I would go for the 9'8'' as a good all rounder. Sorry again for the delay.
