2018 Starboard Wide Point 8'10'' review / Intermediate surf

In this SUPboarder review we are surfing the new 2018 Starboard Wide Point 8'10'' in their Starlite construction. The Starboard Wide Point range consists of 5 boards all being 32'' wide. The 8'10'' is a board that is relatively short for its width, making it a fun, stable, user friendly board for beginner SUP surfers. But also an outstanding board for 80-90kg intermediate surfers wanting a board to throw around on a wave. Find out more on SUPboarder here : https://wp.me/p38Bcs-b5P

Thanks a lot for the review. I‘ve been riding an inflatable 11‘3“ the past few years (flatwater, ocean with chop) and want to get into SUP surfing. I live in NYC and would mostly be surfing at Rockaway Beach, which has pretty small beach break waves most of the time.
I‘m 82 kg and am on the fence between the 8‘10“ and 9‘5“ wide points. I think the 8‘10“ might be a bit more fun after I have some experience, and the quad option could be good for mushy waves. But the 9‘5“ is probably easier for me as a beginner SUP surfer. Any thoughts?

Hey Tim , Yeah the biggest thing that you will notice will be the length drop and tracking/glide for catching waves. Going from a 11'3 to a 8'10 might be too much of a drop in one go. The 9'5 will be a better transition and you will still be able to learn very good technique with the longer board. Remember dropping down boards sizes too early wont make your surfing better, if anything it will slow down your surf progression. I hope that helps Reuben

Hi , really good reviews very informative. I'm 75kg and I would say getting on for intermediate . wanting to improve my surf sup, would you recommend the 8'10" or drop down to the 8'2" . I want something that is fairly forgiving , stable but also something that I don't have to upgrade to soon. and good for uk south coast conditions . Also looking at Fanatic allwaves which I believe are a similar type of board ? Thanks James

@SUPboarder Hi Reuben , I'm still on the lookout for a smaller widepoint at the right price, seem quite rare at the moment ! would a larger fanatic prowave be a good option at my weight of 75kg or should I resist the temptation of going for a pro shape at this stage. thanks again , you reviews are the best out there !

@James Macdonald Hey . Yeah that could almost be a better board. The WP will offer you more performance but the PR will give you a bit more width at the tail and nose which will make learning manoeuvres like cut backs easier. Riding surf SUPs is all about stepping down on the right boards at the right time. At the your weight the PR could be a great option. Thanks Reuben

Or could I go to a bigger Pro or pro wave ?

Hi Reuben , thanks again for the advice, I'm looking for a second hand 8'2 wide point , seem to be quite rare at the moment! Would another option be the Starboard 8'5 pocket pocket , or would that be a step down to much . Cheers James

Hey James . Thanks for the question. You are the same weight as me and I feel that the 8'2 would be the better bet. It wont catch waves like the 8'10 but being shorter it will handle the UK South coast swells better. The fanatics are nice boards as well but I haven't used them as much as the WP. The 8'9 would work well but not as manoeuvrable as the shorter Starboard 8'2! The WP and the Allwaves are great boards for really getting alot out of SUP surfing and learning a good surfing style . Thanks Reuben

Thanks for such a great review Reuben! I'm looking at a first time surf SUP. I'm about 72kg. I'd love to be able to tour a bit with same board (paddle from one break to the next). Any recommendations on which size I should get would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, It all comes down to how much surfing you want to do compared to flatwater paddling? A Starboard WP 9'5'' would be a good bet. But if you're more focused on surf performance a Starboard WP 8'10'' would be better for your body weight. It's all to do with overall flatwater glide. Shorter boards have less! Thanks Reuben

In your opinion, which starboard between the nut, hyper nut, or widepoint works best in weak mushy beachbreak surf?

Hi David, Well it depends on what size surf and what size boards? The smaller HN are great in all size mushy stuff. When any board gets longer ie10'+ I find its a bit hard to surf well in really mushy waves because of the boards length. The HN and the WP boards up to 8'6'' would work well in small to average size surf. Its a hard one, really comes down to rider ability ,body weight and what board you like the feel of too. Sorry I cant give you a definite answer on that one. Thanks Reuben

Robert DeRomph I’m 92kg how do you find the 9’5” for flat water? Are you happy with this size or do you wish you had gone one size smaller?
