Tugs are cute but at anchor/dock they roll, roll, roll, roll and ROLL. It is annoying as hell. Something to think about first.

What are the benefits of a Tug? Stability in rough seas, sallow draft, unsinkable, or just the great looks?

Not open ocean, especially beam seas. Good inland lakes cruising, through locks and such.

Fuel efficiency, possibility to live aboard on a small footprint which takes a smaller dock and therefore is more affordable.
The accommodations are usually befitting a boat where a few ppl can live aboard for some time
As ppl are saying they can go faster but at the expense of fuel burn. If you keep the boat at hull speed it should only need to be trickle fed fuel. Going much faster means pushing a lot of water which takes a lot of horsepower and consequently fuel.
So whats the hull speed? Generally its the square root of the waterline length x 1.34
Probably fractionally less than 7 knots

@Jan Kjaer They haven't used Yanmar engines in quite a while; they use Volvo now. (Or a choice of Yamaha or Suzuki outboards on the R-27 and R-23.) This model, The R-29 CB, comes with the 300 HP Volvo D4.

No, Mike, they are not designed for open ocean voyaging. They have semi-displacement hulls, they don't have stabilizers, the windows are not strong enough to take boarding seas, etc. Call Andrew Custis at the factory and ask him if he would take one on a trans-Atlantic cruise or a trip from Seattle to Hawaii, and see what he says.

Ranger Tugs can be used in open ocean. The biggest advantage to a tug though is the fuel savings. Tug boats are designed to have power, not speed. While these aren't working tugs so they don't have real tug boat engines, they are extremely fuel efficient. But the trade off is you aren't going to be going very fast. These boats cruise around 7 knots for maximum efficiency. The look and hull style is what makes them a "tug" boat.

In the case of the Ranger Tugs, I wouldn't take one into open ocean, but for near-coastal and inland cruising, yeah, they're pretty stable. "The look" is definitely appealing to me. The new ones don't look as much like old tugs as the previous versions, but they still have enough of the "workboat" look to their lines to evoke a salty feel. Mostly, though, it's because they're small enough to be easily handled and economical, but still have plenty of storage and accommodations space. My brother has a 2012 R29 -- which is one of the "old style" 29s -- and it's one of the few sub-40 footers in which I can stand at the galley. (I'm 6'5".) It's perfect as a weekender, and I could easily see myself spending a week or more aboard without too much trouble. A Nordic Tugs 40 would be even better in most respects, but it's also a lot more expensive. In addition to lower price, the Ranger Tugs are also small enough to be towed behind a large pickup, increasing the range of operations considerably. (The 29 and 31, though, do require an oversize load permit for towing, because they have 10-foot beams.)

Personally I don't like the command bridge version of the Ranger Tugs R-29 or the R-31; to me it looks like someone set up a jungle gym on the cabin top. But to each his own. I'd love to have either a Ranger Tugs R-29S or an R-27, and take a year off to do the Great Loop solo. Naturally I'd name my solo boat The Lone Ranger, and my dinghy would be Tonto.
