Hi. Just something I tried recently was to use a universal joint from a small toolkit (read mini rachet set) with two 3D printed ends. Of course the motor I was using didn't have this much torque or speed but it seems to work. You should also consider 3D printing a custom universal joint with something like 3mm screws to hold the cross in. These couplers that you used allow for a little bit of flex but at these speeds and the fact that the motor mount and turbine housing aren't one piece will always cause it to fail! Good work though! Your efforts are a great learning for me! Thanks a lot and keep it up!

Water + a little dish soap in a container that you can dip your fingers in will help smoothing sealant and stop it sticking to your fingers.

The 3d printed coupler should fail under load.
As the RPM of motor in water should be lower, so the metal coupler should be better.

The upper side of the boat should be fitted with a magnet. In case the coupler failed in the middle of pond,
the quadcopter can rescue the boat.

Just an easy tip for getting close to center on a round stock use straight 6" ruler and while your work piece is horizontal place the ruler on top the piece roughly center. Bring the chuck with the bit down on top the ruler if the ruler is horizontal to the work piece showing 90° on ether side you are about .002 from center. It's quick easy and accurate my uncle taught me this cool trick.

If you want speed reduce the nozzle dia . Have a look at the real Hamilton jet units for some hints. That thing will fly with a bit of thinning on the jet. Intake on upstream should be a low curve into the unit. Try putting the back of a spoon against water coming out of your kitchen tap .... water will follow the curve.

Awesome video mate, one of your best .

If you drill a hole at the bottom of the rear bulkhead, glue a small 10mm tube flush with the inside and a little sticking out the back, then attach a neck of a balloon to it, make sure you use a balloon neck that was folded over in the bag and pop it over the tube with fold facing up. When you accelerate the water getting inside the boat will exit the hole through the balloon, when you stop the balloon seals off the water from getting in. You can of course buy a special sealing tube from good boat suppliers instead of using a balloon.

You can try a piece of flexible thick walled pvc tubing or hose as a coupler ,works on DIY cnc machines ,i know they are lower speeds and possible lower torque but they catch vibrations and slight misalignment very well. worth a try

No lathe, no problem for the size of coupler you were making, just put the coupler in the drill chuck and mount the drill bit in a vice or similar and it should make a hole in the centre. Start off with a smaller drill bit first. Spin the workpiece not the drill! Like a lathe!

Reason your big aquastar esc cuts out is because you have to adjust the Lipo voltage on the esc via programming card. They are set to 12s default...unless you have 12 s power to supply... you will need a program card for the esc...

Awesome video especially showing what did not work - many folks leave that stuff out of their videos. I bought an RC boat this summer and had a blast until I seized the shaft bearing and melted the mounting (I learned too late that It needs to be greased occasionally) . Your boat is progressing really well, good job! My RC boat has a solid propshaft and I too have had MAJOR problems getting it to run smoothly! A coupler has to be 100% true and motor alignment is absolutely critical in this type of installation. A note on the Aquastar ESC's: I have one of these and they do not run at all (or only poorly) without using the correct program card first. Check and/or change the parameters with the program card, and hey presto, it works! HobbyKing says they should run fine with the factory preset, but that's not the case. In my opinion, it would be better if program cards were provided with each ESC, even if the price would go up slightly, as this saves the customer a lot of aggravation. Looking forward to your next video dude!

Still need to taper (smaller hole at exit, like a funnel) the steering nozzle to increase the velocity of the water at the exit. Like putting your thumb on the garden hose. If you want to drill a hole in a zylinder, an easy way to get it right is to put the drillbit in a vise and the thing you want to drill in the drill chucks. That way the drill centers itself.

Wonderful Video. Failure is part of the process right? I thought about replacing the coupler with a closed loop gt belt and geared pulleys from a 3d printer. Like combustion engines transfer the torque. But there would be the question of placement because the center of gravity and so on.

You don't actually touch anything. Their is boundary between you and the object, you never actually make contact. Nothing is "solid" and even rocks are fluid and run like molasses in february over thousands of years. This has been demonstrated by art glass in cathedrals that were built long ago. The glass is running and getting thicker at the bottom. Everything is moving/ vibrating... IT's fucking science @$$Hole !!
