To me, this album wasn't good, and it wasn't bad. It was simply okay. Some songs were worse than others, and there were a few songs that were actually very decent. Definitely a major fall from earlier albums like My Private Nation, and even Save Me, San Francisco.

I totally disagree with your review of this album but you are entitled to your opinions. One thing I have to say though, is to get your facts straight before you go blasting a song out of the water. "You Better Believe" was written for Pat Monahan's children. It's him telling them that he will always be there for them even when he physically isn't anymore. Look back at the lyrics ad you can clearly see that. He is telling his kids that he will be their teacher for when they have a family of their own. It's not about him begging for a girlfriend to come back. Now the lyrics should make sense to you.

I think I like Train A LOT more than I really should. Well, providing I ignore the lyrics, that is. For some reason, I like their instrumentation quite a lot. Even on some of their worst songs like Drive By and Hey Soul Sister.

Neither of you mentioned "What Good Is Saturday": which I too thought summed up the most glaring weakness of the album. Where you might get a pleasing guitar tone here and there, but it's traded for electronic drumming and dumb lyrics like "Cartoons ain't funny no more, Cap'N'Crunch tastes like cardboard, checking out the FIFA scores..." =/

To my ears, half the album obviously was trying to go for a white-bread throwback doo-wop or R&B sound. But I also felt half the album was going for some hybridization of EDM pop and dad-rock sensibility. Especially with "Working Girl". Elements of that song's production reminded me of David Guetta's "Without You" as well as Katy Perry's "Waking Up In Vegas", and I got the vibe they were trying to emulate that big chorus endemic to EDM but consciously trying to sterilize any resemblance of a drop so it wouldn't alienate older Adult Contemporary listeners.

And "Loverman"...................wow, how choppy is that? It actually comes across more like a Priscilla Renea-Featuring Pat Monahan song. Boy you can tell their vocals were recorded separately with the complete lack of chemistry.

Their 2015 Christmas in Tahoe album & 2016 Led Zeppelin II cover album were some of the best in years. I blame Butch Walker & Espionage for their sloppy production work for the last albums like California 37 & Bulletproof Picasso.
