CI sent down three custom boards with the exact same dimensions (5’5” x 19 1/8 x 2 ¼ liters 25.9) and in three different constructions. One board is EPS with a set of medium glass on fins, another EPS in CI’s new technology called Spine-Tek, and the last board is PU. (Polyurethane) The Neck Beard 2 goes GOOD in 1-6’ surf and it exceeded my expectations for performance surfing. From the very first session in 2-4’ surf there was a special connection with this model. It has incredible speed, good flow, and it enabled me to be more progressive in my surfing. At times it felt magical… like I could do no wrong, maneuvers that I would normally fall I was making. I was having so much fun in the 1-4’ surf that I didn’t want to get off of it. The waves jumped to 4-7’ and I continued to push the limits looking to find this boards ceiling and it continued to impress me. With this being said the Neck Beard 2 is the first board in my opinion that deserves to be called a “One Board Quiver.” I highly recommend this board for 1-6’ surf for intermediate to pro level surfers. If this board is not on your radar…. it should be!! My height: 5’9” My Weight: 160 lbs or 72.57 kg

I'm calling this the POP without the Spring
I took this board out on Monday, Memorial day where the waves were shoulder high on the bigger sets. One thing I like to do is take a board out on crappy days to see how well it performs under less than desirable conditions. I caught fun waves on this board but it was nothing of what I expected, let me explain, With a board being that wide I like to see that get up and go right out the gate and this board didn't have that for me. The board honestly felt clunky. When a good section did come through and I got a chance to experience it in the pocket, the board came alive at the top of the wave with good pop and can be thrown around pretty easy, however it lacked the spring that something like the cymatic or even the rocket wide had infused into it's design. If the wave didn't offer much punch then the board was slow edge to edge and tended to bog fairly easy. However, if the wave had some kick to it then you got to experience how fun it could be. Right now I'm surfing the Holy Grail by Hayden Shapes cause I took a trip up to Huntington, were the waves can very easily amplify so I wanted a board that can handle that so that's why I selected the Holy Grail. Sadly, I think I would have had more fun on the grail than on the NB2
Board Wars Holy Grail vs NB2
The Grail bends over and goes booboo on the NB2
thumbs down on the NB2
Pros: fun when the waves have punch and are clean
Cons: in my experience: not an all rounder and most def not a quiver killer, missing that spring on the bottom turn(better on the backside), tail feels too stiff, too much carbon on the tail, lacks get up and go, does not help you catch waves early enough being that it's so wide, rails tend to bog easily if wave doesn't have much punch to it.

What do you think the NB2 would ride like as a round tail? Perhaps it would drift less out of top turn? It could then be surfed more aggressively. There must be the odd guy around SoCal that rides it with a round.

Just got the NB2 in PU standard glass 5' 9" standard dims - wanted more durability and weight in choppy/textured conditions at my local break (El Porto). After a few sessions I can confirm that at 31 liters this board paddles and catches way easier than my last board at 34 liters (Tomo Evo) which is strange and cool. Those CI guys definitely know how to make a well balanced instrument. Thanks for all the great reviews! So hard to choose!

Shane Farrell Rocket Wide...
Shane Farrell
Shane Farrell - 4 years ago
@Surf n Show Reviews Awesome Thanks :) One last question, I am between this, the rocket wide and mod pod. I know they are all awesome, but for a more power, carve surfer, but still high performance (lip smashing...), which would you recommend for San Diego (Del Mar reefs, beach breaks, grandview, Oceanside Harbor...) I was leaning towards the Neckbeard 2, but it seems to slide when put on rail with more power. Hence my rethinking and considering the rocket wide. And the mod pod is just fu, but not as high performance as the other 2. Looking for a fun summer board, high performance...

Shane Farrell The RTM Tech 1 and AM2 Honeycomb are the same. I tried a Pivot fin and it’s super loose and pivotal. Maybe the F8... it’s neutral but I still think the AM2 or RTM Tech 1 is the call

Hey Noel, would you recommend the NB2 over the Fever for a 1 board quiver? I'm 6'5 195 lbs and have the 6'4 stock dim Fever in spine-tek. To keep around the same 36 liter mark would be a 6' NB2, would that be too short for me?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
spiffjiff05 The NB2 will go good in 1-2’ surf and and 3-5’ surf. The Cymatic is epic in 3-8’ surf. The NB2 is a better daily Driver for where I live because I am surfing 1-4’ 90% of the time.
spiffjiff05
spiffjiff05 - 4 years ago
@Surf n Show Reviews Thank you for the quick reply. I'm stuck between the NB2 and Cymatic. I got to demo a 5'10 Cymatic and had a blast - didn't expect to have fun on a board 7 inches shorter than me - but paddling was an issue. I've been watching your videos/interview over and over and leaning towards the NB2 as I think it should be a better 1 board quiver and should paddle better than the Cymatic. I'm a weekend warrior (desk jockey by weekday) and looking for a board that is the most "fun". Any thoughts are appreciated.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
spiffjiff05 It might feel pretty responsive because it’s 5” shorter than you. I like my boards shorter like that in small waves... it fits better in the tight transitions. The NB2 is a better 1 board quiver.... maybe order one custom around 6’2” or 6’3” and dial in the liters to what you want.
Tony Miller
Tony Miller - 5 years ago
If you were ordering yourself another NB2, to ride in 1-6ft as your daily driver, would you aim to hit your 'normal' 25.5L volume bang on (getting 25.0L in Spinetek). Or would you still prefer 0.5 or 1 litre more volume? Thanks.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Tony Miller Year round NB2 would be my first choice. I would go 5’5” Spinetek... that’s middle range for me in my liters. Nothing confusing just keep it simple
Tony Miller
Tony Miller - 5 years ago
@Surf n Show Reviews Thanks for coming back to me. What if your NB2 was for use year round as a daily driver in 1-6ft, do you think the NB2 performs best bang on your usual 25.5L volume (25L Spinetek)? Just a bit confused as I have seen several pro guys ride it at both their 'normal' volume but at other times 1lt over volume, regardless of wave size.

Noel, do you thé difference between fever and Neck beard 2 tail carbon patches please? Do you think new blue patch for happy model could be thé answer to your half carbon tail patch custom nb2 order? I like futurflex and lft and wouldn't toi stiff on nb2
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Yannick Haddouche Yes, I think the new blue patch CI is doing could be a good answer to more tail flex in boards. The big question for me is will it keep the board from cracking under my toe side bottom turns? For years the Carbon tail hits saved my boards from destruction on the tail. I would be curious to do some testing on CI’s new blue tail patch. I will check in with CI and see if they want a review on this new patch they are doing.

Hi Noel ripping as always. Have you ridden the NB2 as a quad with the square tail (as it comes in 5 fin set-up)? Would the swallow tail be a better set-up for a quad than a square tail? I'm going through a Bobby Martinez phase at the moment riding quad swallows. I ran a swallow tail design through the custom set-up on the Channel Islands web page and the outline looked sick. Waiting to pull the trigger based on your advice. Cheers Legend!!

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Yannick Haddouche Thinner you will be able to sink the rail faster. Narrower the board will be a bit more maneuverable. A wider board will give you more planning speed and projection but it can also feel a bit tighter. Going from 18 3/4 wide to 19 you won’t feel much difference in maneuverability but it will help you with speed in mushy surf. A wider board has more surface area which will help with more speed.

Hi Noel,

Yes, looking to replace Chilli. Current quiver:
PM good for small gutless surf-36 litres
Sampler- favorite small wave 1-4= 31 litres- looking to downsize on litres
Chilli BV epoxy 29 litres
Fever- 28.9 litres- not use much yet, cause 90% surf 1-3 lately.
worked my way down from 39 litres and in 31- 29 range, maybe lower, wanting to progress to digging rail in harder and cutback better- surf mainly LA north pt breaks-
Looking at RW and NB2- thoughts on which would be better for me and does the epoxy need a sweet spot to work?
im leaning toward NB2 cause seems much different than my quiver
thanks !

R Watty - 5 years ago
Hi Noel,
I have bought all my boards off your reviews, except a Chilli Black Vulture in EPS 50/50.
I have not seemed to get this board going compared to my Sampler and I noticed in your responses below that there is a sweet spot with EPS, maybe that is why its not working, because it's supposed to be super fast. I have a pod mod, 5'10 but 37 ltrs, like a small fun board, love it for super small days. Also have a fever and a sampler(favorite small wave board). My litres are around 31-29, intermediate, 54(surfing again last 3 yrs after 20 year break), 5'9,160 lbs, and starting to progress to quick cut backs and round house, and no vertical snaps yet.

I am thinking of selling Chilli and getting either RW or NB2 , and wondered if you think I should get in PU since not working in EPS, or maybe more time at it would help?
Also, which board you think would be better RW or NB2 for my quiver?
Thanks for all your great reviews, has really helped propel my surfing with right boards!!

Hi Noel,
Well, I decided to give the Chilli one last try and put in my Tyler Warner 2 +1 twin fins I use on my PM and love the way it surfs. It totally changed the way it surfed, more drive and fun, and lit up the board for me, interesting as
how much different fins can change a board. You might want to give these TW fins a try.
Technical question: I am same size as you but intermediate, and wondered about what would be the highest volume you think you could go for getting good performance in cutbacks, sprays, etc. I am at 31-29 litres, and on edge I feel right now, your thoughts?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
R Watty What wave size are you thinking for this next board? Are you replacing the Chilli with it?

Some boards work good and others we don’t connect. You can give the Chilli more time and try to find the right fin set or just cut your losses and move on. It can be hard at times to sacrifice your surfing time to try and make a board work when you have other boards in your quiver that go insane. It’s up to you...

Kapukataumahaka Owheo I prefer the NB2. It has more hold and it can handle more wave. The Sampler is really fun in 1-4’ surf and the NB2 is epic in 1-6’ surf.

Hey Noel! I was looking into this board and was wondering if I should get it in PU to keep rail drive or Spine-tek for those smaller days. I've ridden epoxy but never really liked the feel of it and I feel like the spine-tek would be too bouyant. It is rarely glassy where I surf and I constantly have to deal with chop and some bumps on the face. If you could help me out it'd be great!

Hey there Noel. Did Dane’s NB2 have large or medium fins glassed on? I’m 80 kgs and the medium fins in air core felt good but lacked drive to me. I’ve got the spine tech stock 5’8.
I put in the performance core lge AM and the board felt mental. Way more speed off the bat and a lot more control.

@UCyG8LQXPDH7WPuobykGStcQ Noel I'm actually watching your convo with Britt at the moment another top notch job bro. I'm really into this model just unsure and waiting for your Sci Fi review because of the price. I'd have to get your input about PU traditional stringer or carbon spine and fins, that I hope you'd help me with. I'm thinking these are the two best boards for what I'm looking for in small waves for an intermediate surfer, surfing lousy NJ surf with the possibility of good NJ surf. correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks again Noel. any thoughts on the other models I mentioned? I'm also curious about some of the newer models coming out from rusty and lost that have the beak nose. djconeuk I say 6’ Cali style... maybe 2’ overhead. I think a couple waves on got on the NB2 might have been a tad bigger than 6’ but the NB2 handled it very well. Noel, Excellent Reviews! You should be on payroll for CI, Lost, Pyzel, Futures, FCS, etc... because your reviews are giving them incredible sales spikes! Your audience will be stoked for you to make a living doing what you do so well. The integrity of your reviews will not be tainted by the funding because the proof in your reviews is always in the pudding ( the video footage). Plus, the reason that you are such a great asset to surf companies and the public is that everyone knows that you tell it straight (and from knowledge/testing). CI or Lost should at least collaborate with you to create a signature Noel Salas board-- they can call it the "Favorite Drink" model. And have you tried the Stretch Quads? They are some of my all-time favorite fins. Please get 'em in a review

I'm 5'10, 195 lbs; I surf as much as I can, but I make it a point to get in the water every week, this last month I've put on a lot of hours in the water with all the great swells and conditions we've got in SoCal; what dimensions and construction would you recommend me for surfing around here? Hey Noel. Nice review. You can really see the difference between the honeycomb AM1 and tech flex AM1 in the
spine-tek. I'm riding a bunny chow right now with the Dane large captain fins and love it, but at times it feels a bit too
loose for me. I was wondering if riding the AM2s would tighten it up due to the increased sweep in the template. Have you tried the tech flex AM2? Wondering if they would give me more hold and allow me to push harder in my turns
without sliding the tail.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Andrew Ratchelous Absolutely... the AM2 will tighten it up a bit. More rake, surface area, and more fin depth. The Tech Flex Large felt really stiff to me though. They felt good in bigger surf with more power. You might want to just try the AM2 in Honeycomb.

HI Noel, You are totally ripping! I am just looking for a bit of board advice. I am (14 yrs) 6’1 and 155 pounds. I like to ride a little longer boards but struggle because the longer stock boards tend to carry a lot more foam. My shortboard is a 6’2 Fever 19 1/2 x 2 9/16 at 32.4 liters. I just ordered more of a small wave board from ci called the Fred stubble as a 6’0 at 19 5/8 x 2 1/2 31 liters (Custom) in spinetek. I know that you like to ride very little volume and I have been wanting to step down in foam a bit. I was wondering if you had any advice on how low to go or if there were certain dimensions that you think I should be aiming for. Also I would say I am an average surfer but I have started doing NSSA contests so I am looking for something I will be able to compete on. I assume that I should start ordering custom dims? Also I’m super excited to use the spinetek in smaller waves but I have heard that it has a little bit of a tricky feel. What are your thoughts? Thanks so much and keep ripping the reviews are all time!!

SoCal Surfer I think your volume should be around 27-28 liters so you can turn that board quicker. As you progress and get better your liters should be 25.5-26 liters.

Because your so tall you should be ordering all of you boards custom. I suggest the Fever or Phantom for competition. The Phantom would be ideal... easy to surf and paddles insane. Order that custom around 27.5-28 liters 5’11” or 6’.

Love the reviews Noel! Have you considered trying different spots on the same boards? I think allot of boards would work well at 2-4 foot lowers but put the same board on a fatter face or hollower wave elsewhere and it would be a different story. For example the neck beard in 5 foot soft lowers holds well but might struggle in a 4 foot punchy spot.

ron stuff We will try boards at beach breaks over the winter time. When we shoot beach breaks we don’t usually get much footage in a day and we try to drop a review every two weeks. We evaluated square tails and found they pivot turn well. The reason for a square tail is to ride a shorter board with more parallel rail line. It rail turns like a longer board but pivots off the top. Everyone in my group preferred a swallow tail because the tail sinks more in a rail turn. The board you are reviewing was ridden by Corky Caroll at pipeline in the 1970's.

beyond the fact that the neck bird fits higher waves, what is more suitable for 1-3 fit waves?
and why?
(both in spine tek).

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Amir Shahar Not sure the RW is more suitable for 1-3’ waves now after riding the NB2. I will say that the RW can do tighter turns in a small wave. The NB2 gets vertical faster due to pivot off the square tail. If I had to choose between the two I would go NB2 so if it gets bigger than 3’ the NB2 excels there compared to the RW.

NOAH, you're surfing really well on that neck beard. that board looks like it goes really well. One thing came to mind (as we are roughly the same age, size, also board dims), do you do anything to stay in shape? or anything that helps your surfing out of the water? Could you do a review of any routine you do to stay in great surfing shape when its flat, or when conditions are not ideal. thanks man for all the hard work you do,. Hi, Noel great video as usual. I was looking at the CI website and I don't think you mention it in your video but the options are of some considerable extra costs, spine tek +$130. Flex bar +$190 . Do you feel these options are value for money and have you tried and varial foam boards as that is a $295 upgrade!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
krusher74 Yes I have used the Varial foam and it’s pretty sick but not worth the extra cash from my perspective. It doesn’t hold up much better compared to EPS or PU.

Go to our website and watch the construction review I did a couple years ago. Under the “construction” tab. I surf the CI Sampler model in 5 different constructions and one of them is Varial Foam. I also did a separate review on Varial vs PU.

krusher74 I know I do not mention the cash upgrade but to surfers who want a little more pop in their turns, more flotation, or more durability then The extra $ is worth it.

Great review as always Noel, I was wondering if you could recommend a FSC 1 fin for a Lost Speed Demon 3 I just picked up 2nd hand. I'm looking for a good all round large fin but can't really remember the old standard FCS models. Was it the AM 2's? That where a good all rounder? Thanks in advance for any help Noel. Much appreciated. Chris. PS I think FCS & Futures etc should sponsor you to review there fins, I know you always talk about the best fins for each board but if the fin company's wanted clearer info about there fin models I think you guys would do a great job, maybe trying 1 set of fins with different boards & in different conditions etc so you could then recommend certain fin models for what there customers are looking for. Fins are a big investment now so the fin company's need to put out better info and you and your brother would be the guys to really break it down for the mass's.

Peace Soup - 5 years ago
Hi Noel - Just wondering if you had to buy a pair of quad rears for a set up with the front fins being large's. Would you go for the rears in a small or medium size? Going thru fin shop sites last week I saw there's zero info on that and when you look at a pair of quad rears - Lets say a M size pair of rears, in all the shops online it states that a M quad rear is for a medium rider weight (65-80 Kg) which is incorrect as it's most likely for a large rider weight (75 - 90Kg / 165 - 200 Lbs) looking to buy a pair of quad rears which are obviously going to be smaller then his large sized front fins. You get me?

JorgeAndresCoppiano. That would be close... the Sampler might have an edge on down the line speed.... so it’s up to you. Do you want a really fast board that projects down the line better in flat mushy waves then go Sampler. If you want to surf the pocket more and still have speed then NB2.

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Paul James All three boards are sick and you will be stoked on each of them. The Moonbeam is more of a small wave board 1-4’ surf, the Phantom is more of a Daily Driver 3-7’ surf and the NB2 is a one board quiver 1-6’ surf. I would choose a board that fits what your quiver needs.
Paul James
Paul James - 5 years ago
I would like to add I am an intermediate surfer, 6ft3 and 85+ kg. I am looking for a one board quiver type for 2-6ft surf that will help me with speed and manoeuvrability (adding that I enjoy more a powerful carving style that snappy all over the place type).
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Billjenkins The Phantom has more rocker overall so it will have better traction off the bottom and in the pocket. This NB2 seems to be a little faster and more playful plus it can Grovel in 1-3’ surf.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Tomek Kosalka You have real problems... deciding between two sick boards. The Cymatic is so fun to ride such a short board with a HPSB feel. The NB2 has progressive surfing all over it for me. If you want to surf more progressive in 1-6’ surf then I would go NB2. If Tomo’s Designs are a mystery to you and you want to give his boards a go then the Cymatic is a blast. Maybe try to demo both and then pull the trigger.

Whitney Haraguchi All 3 models are my favorites in the CU lineup. The NB2 has the best wave range out of the 3. I would be torn too but if you don’t switch boards much in different sizes then go NB2. Once you get in it you won’t want to get off.

Hey Noel sorry I'm going to stop bugging you now but wanted to ask... I'm going to pull the trigger on a NB2 spinetek. I'm 40YO 163lbs and 5'9". Experienced 6 or 7/10 surfer but surf crowded waves that vary in punch. Normally surf 27.5 litres in PU. Was thinking the 5'6" 26.8 is a little under what I normally surf but with the spinetek maybe it's fine? Maybe this board is so flat and easy to paddle that 0.5 of a litre under what I'm currently on is ok and would actually help my surfing?? The step up to the 5'7" goes up to 28.1 litres. Big step. You surfed 25.5 litres on this board and seemed to be grovelling just fine and then the rail seemed to be engaging beautifully when you had good speed. But you're a better surfer than I am.

What's your thoughts on volume and how did you work it out for yourself? Do you vary your volume much? Seabass says 1litre per 6lbs which is kinda how I go. I just bought a couple of boards with an extra litre to help paddle into waves in crowded conditions and in the variable punch we get with our waves here on the Sunshine Coast Australia and I felt those boards were terrible. I hate the feeling of too much volume but then you need volume sometimes. Sorry - long question. Love to hear your thoughts before I drop lots of money on this new board. Also custom is going to take an extra month or two for me to order so thinking stock dims is the go. Even then I have to wait a month!

I've had a lot of boards lately BTW. All PU.

JS 107 5'6" 29 litres [awesome for grovelling. Love it. Hits a ceiling in wave height quickly though. Grovel only]
DHD switchblade 5'8" 27.5 litres [loved it. Surf it till its death. Doesn't grovel as well as the 107 and hits its ceiling at about 4'. Would love a bit more versatility in my daily driver]
DHD 3DV 5'9" 28 litres [not into it. Not great for grovelling and catching heaps of waves. Feels weird and skatey going into turns. Not super versatile for me. I do some radical stuff on this thing but it's not all intentional!]
JS monstabox 5'9" 27 litres [was ok but I felt undervolumed on this board and didn't whip through turns like my Switchblade]
DHD DNA 5'11" 27.5 litres [love it but rarely surf it as it needs more punch to get going. Great in nice waves and reef breaks when I travel]
DHD DNA 5'10" 28.5 litres [hate it. Can't get the rail to engage properly and feels like a boat. Weird]
JS monsta 6'0 27.5 litres [great but needs punchy waves]
JS monsta 6'1 pin tail 29 litres [great but a bit over volumed for me]
DHD Duck nuts 6'0 28.5 litres [love it for bigger waves. Great board and confidence inspiring in the juice]

haha too much info! Tell me to buy that 5'6" stock NB2 spinetek and I'll be happy. Thanks again Noel. Great to have this interaction with someone who's surfed them all and knows what they are talking about.

Sorry to bother Noel. One other quick question. How do you think the DHD wilko F13 stacks up against the NB2 and Holy Grail? I’ve surfed DHDs for years but not loving the 3DV I just bought. Not confidence inspiring for me and not particularly easy at paddling into waves.

Does the spine tek feels more buoyant than PU ? Would you go same volume as your PU. I usually ride 32.5 for daily and the 5'10 in 32.8L would be my pick, i m keen to try spinetek but I m worried it ll feels too much volume. In PU the extra volume should be fine but in Spinetek... dont know

My neckbeard PU is 5'10 32.4L, feels very good. The 5'10 Neckbeard 2 is already 32.9L, so if I take it in Spinetek I m afraid that those 0.5L will make the board feel too buoyant. And the 5'9 would feel under volumed. Maybe i ll stick to normal PU then...
