Noel Salas gets two custom boards one in his Groveler DIMS and the other in his High Performance DIMS. The 5'7" has incredible speed in 2-3 foot surf. On paper the Fever would seem to have to much overall rocker to be a good Groveler but to Noel's surprise it is his new favorite CI board to date in 2-3 and 4-6 foot surf. Fin selection is always important for small waves and the Blackstix F8 3.0 by Futures Fins was his fin of choice. The 5'9" High Performance Short Board goes mental too says Salas. This board has the FCSII fin system and the signature Mick Fanning fins were his fin of choice. This is what Channel Islands Surfboards has to stay about the Fever. The Fever has its roots in Al Merrick’s trusted and proven high performance short board designs. The goal in designing this board with Mike Andrews and Patrick Gudauskas was to create a more accessible tour level performance board that anyone who jumped onto it would “instantly feel the speed and zest for creativity.” Borrowing Pat’s favorite elements of the Proton, Rookie and MBM, and combining them with a subtle single concave and lower rocker resulted in a board with a huge sweet spot. With a slightly more parallel outline and forgiving rocker the Fever has proven to be an all-around design that excels in a wide range of conditions and wave types. The Fever also has responded really well to the FlexBar Technology- “ I think because it’s such a fast board, the Flexbar technology gives it extra pop and flair and is a nice compliment to the relatively simple outline”. The Fever in the words of Patrick Gudauskas: Overview: The Fever was born from a desire for an all-around performance board based on elements I love, Speed, Drive, and Flair. My Goal in designing this board with Mike Andrews and Channel Islands was to create a surfboard that I could surf in almost any conditions and have a hell of a good time on it. I wanted a more accessible Tour Performance board that anyone who jumped onto it would instantly feel the speed and zest for creativity. Conditions: I like to surf my Fever in anything from 2-3 foot softer California style beach break and point break waves, to 6ft+ World Tour style waves, like Snapper, J Bay, Bells, Lowers, Haleiwa, and Backdoor. I prefer to ride it just above my groveler/small wave board, and all the way until I need a step-up or round tail surfboard.

Hey Noel, thanks for another great review. I am considering ordering a custom CI board for everyday beach breaks in socal. Mostly surfing el porto in the 2-7 foot range and I am 5'9 and 165 lbs. If you were to pick one CI board to surf year round in avg socal waves, which model would you go with? Thanks!

Ronny439 Custom Fever in Spinetek for me. Air17X is mental too... but Fever goes good in 2-4’ surf for a HPSB. Just gotta go custom and get it shorter, wider, and s little thicker.

Hi Noel,

Do you think these dims will work for 3-7 foot?
6'1 x 20 x 2 11/16 @ 34.4 litres? Waves will be mixed Beachies point break.. I ride stock 5'11 sampler as small wave board..
I don't like boards too long as I'm about 510 and have a pretty narrow stance..

Another option is a standard og flyer 6'1
Cheers

Hi Noel, you recently recommended I try a fever. I’m about to order one custom through surf station but want to get your input first. I want it for the 3-5’ range. Dims would be 5’9, 19, 2 5/16, 26.7 liters. I’m debating between spinetek and regular eps. I ride a lot of chop and most of my boards have been in eps stringer and have felt great. But now curious/skeptical about spinetek. What are your thoughts on dims and construction? I’m 5’10, 150lbs. I ride a 5’4 cymatic @26.7 liters and it feels perfect. Thanks!

Hey I am stoked on your review and it has convinced me to definitely order a custom fever. Im 6' 3 about 185lbs and intermediate surfer. I want to use the board from the higher range of groveling to good surf (like 4-8foot). Im surfing alot of the SD beach breaks. I was thinking 6'1 19 3/8 2 9/16 31.8L. What do you think about those dims? My worry is not having enough volume as this will be my first true HPSB. Thank you, love the show!

Traded in my CI Shadowfax for a Fever, 6'2" @ 32L. I went up in volume. Was gonna go with a sub 30L, but the last swells changed or washed away a lot of the sandbars. Now the waves require a little more volume to paddle into. The Fever is super loose. Might need to get a fin set with more rake. But I like it a lot. Thanks Noel.

Noel! Man I love your videos. I really appreciate the order, the details, and you surfing the boards in different wave sizes and giving a great feedback. Definitely the best surfboard reviews! Thanks man!

I haven’t surfed in 10 years. Used to ride green waves. I am 29 years old. Average fitness. 179cm tall. Weight 185-190 lbs. I grew up skateboarding, so I think am middle or front footed.

I want a board for that 1 to 5 feet tall wave range, beach breaks and point breaks. Something that paddles really easy and allows to be moved, to increase that wave count to have fun and improve.

After watching several of your videos, am thinking my dims for a custom board could be around 5’11” x 20” x 2 1/2” and 32 liters.

And I’m checking these boards, the Sampler, the Fever, and the Black & White. What worries me the most is something that paddles easy. I don’t want to be exhausted after a set. And want to be able to catch lots of waves and have fun. For the rockers and concaves. What’s my right direction?

Thanks,
JorgeAndres

Hi Noel,

As always thanks for the AWESOME effort you put into your show and each board you present, it is soooooo dam helpful we all cant thank you enough!! Last time we chatted you gave me advise on the Rocket9 which I ended up purchasing and have enjoyed as a thruster and as a twin setup with a smaller trailer. It went super well on my forehand but for some reason I could never get it to click on the back hand to easily pivot off the bottom turn and off the lip, it just gets stuck in the wave as opposed to my other current boards which are the #4, Podmod and Girabbit. My guess is that long drawn in tail is the issue with reducing the board’s ability to pivot and release quickly?

I am good 6’3” in height and weigh 205 Lbs. When I purchased the Rocket9, Podmod and Girabbit I was weighing 218 Lbs so I got the Rocket9 in stock standard dimensions of 6’1”, 20 1/2 wide, 2 3/4 thick with 36.5 litres volume as a board to target waves from shoulder high to just above head (being 6’3” tall a just above head high wave for me would be a 7ft nearly 8ft wave ‘face height' and shoulder high waves being 4 to 5ft wave face height). I am now looking at the Fever as a replacement for the Rocket9 in waves that are shoulder to just above head high in size range with the hope that the Fever will pivot and releases a lot better then what the Rocket9 has on my backhand and from what you shown and say on your review clip the Fever could be just perfect!

I have my Girabbit (6’4” by 19 3/4 wide, 2 5/8th thick and 34.4 litres volume) as my board for when waves get up and over ‘head high and a half.’ My Podmod is 6’O” by 21 1/8th wide, 2 2/3rd thick and 39 litres volume and I use this board for waves from waist high to up to head high and have really enjoyed this board, it goes super-fast when applying the bigger side twin fins with a small trailer! I may now look to get a new replacement Podmod that is 5’10” in length with less volume to suit my weight.

My ability after surfing for 20 odd years I would say would be somewhere half way between intermediate and advanced, and love vertical top to bottom pocket / off the lip surfing along with open face carves (be it tail slides or controlled power arch’s and wrap rounds back off the white water) and like to try and seamlessly link from ‘one turn to the next turn’ be it whatever wave type I’m dealing with. From your great surfing on your review clip looks like the Fever would cover this type of surfing no problem in the waves size I am targeting the Fever for.

I would like to get the Fever in ‘groveler’ dimensions so as to allow it to fit in to wave size range I am after as it will be ridden in both standard to good beach break waves, top to bottom down the line point break or river bar waves and would take it to ride in moderate reef break waves with my Girabbit as my step-up option. As such I am looking at the board to be 6’2” in length but I wish to get your feedback on how wide and thick I should push the board before it would comprise its performance design parameters that it’s given length, width and thickness had been intended for based on the standard stock dimensions chart. Given my height I do enjoy having a board with a ‘reasonable width’ for stability when both jumping to my feet and surfing, however I note in your feedback that you advise not to push the board width out to much for the Fever model. Given I am now 205 Lbs I could go for a little less volume but I still like the idea of how volume allows for better easy of paddling, my Rocket9 volume seemed to be a good level for me.

So good sir could you please advise on what you think a ‘realistic’ groveler dimension for a 6’2” Fever that is at its max advisable width and thickness without compromising its performance design parameters.

Thanks a bunch Noel and look forward to your feedback! ‘Wingman7nz’ and I owe you a good locals surf trip or two should you veer come to New Zealand!
Cheers, Frank.

Frank Stanton I think a custom Fever sounds good in Groveler DIMS. How about 6’2” x 20 x 2 5/8 Liters 34? I would go wider than that. If that’s not enough then I would go 6’2” x 19 3/4 x 2 11/16 Liters 34.4.

Kaleb Mannigel I think a Large set of F8’s in Honeycomb will do you some good. The JJF and YU in Techflex are pretty stiff so you won’t get much Drive or flex out of those fins.

The Ando speed generating fins have a bunch of flex so if you weigh more than 160lbs you might get too much flex out of them and get inconsistency in your turns.

Nico M If your DD at 32 Liters feels good and paddles you good then the 6’0” Fever at 31.7 should be good. I like my boards on the more responsive side and 6’0” will be that for you in 3-4’ surf. In the 4-6+ surf you might want that extra paddle and length in the 6’2” so it really about how often you surf bigger waves. This winter I have ridden my HP Short Board 1 time in the last 4 months. Not much surf on tap so boards go unridden.
Nico M

OK so i turns out ive actually been riding around 32L on the Dumster diver CL, so for custom fever dims to make it more into semi groveler for the normal 2-4 surf i'm usually in surely and for the occasional Bali i'm thinking
6'0 - 19'5/8 - 2' 9/16 =31.7L instead of the recommended stock of 6'2, 19' 1/2, 2 9/16 =32.4L.

What are your thoughts?
Thank you :)
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Nico M I think the Fever is mental and will good for you even in the stock DIMS at 6’2 because of your height. If your looking for this board to be a daily Driver in 3-6+ then the Fever or OG Flyer will be epic. If your looking for a shorter board in stock dims then the OG might be better. I prefer the Fever and your going Custom I would not go shorter than 6’0 and not too wide. If you have to get more liters then add thickness and maybe 1/8 wider. I hope that makes sense.

Surf n Show Reviews I totally love your channel and I had a question for you. I have been riding the channel islands pod mod (5' 10 and about 38 liters of volume) as my first shortboard for the last year. It works great in little waves but is a little slow when it gets into bigger surf. By the way I am 5 foot 11 and 145 pounds at 13 yrs of age (still growing). I am looking for a board that I can take out in bigger surf more towards the 5-8 foot range. Do you think the fever would be a good board for that? If so what dimensions would you reccomend. If not do you know of any other boards that would be good for me? (I like Channel islands because I get a 40% discount on boards because my cousins are team riders).

Mad props to Noel for all of his help and his stellar reviews of boards. I bought myself a Fever and thought I would post back here after a good few surfs on it in various conditions. If you are an intermediate to advanced surfer, this board should definitely be in your quiver. It's the best shortboard I have ever ridden.

I'm 5'9" around 155lbs and I got the PU Fever in the stock 5'9" x 2 1/4 x 18 3/8...at 25 liters. I rode the large CI Tech 1 fins. I came from a Tomo SKX in the epoxy flex bar tech and I don't miss it. To be fair though, I bought the SKX used and it had too much volume for me. Sold it and caught a bad Fever.

I live in North County San Diego, so I have a ton of great reefs and beach breaks that I rode the Fever in. I rode waves from 2-7 ft and the board was amazing in all conditions. In the beach breaks I rode it on super clean days and even a couple of crummy days and it went equally well in all conditions. I was quite surprised at how good it went in the big crummy beach break days, but a lot of that has to do with the large RTM tech 1 fins too. I caught the reefs in cardiff around 3-5 foot and super clean. That reef is kind of a slower runner with some nice steep sections here and there. The Fever gave me some of the best sessions in my life there due to the speed I was able to generate on this board. I was smiling ear to ear. Speed is your number one need on a board and the Fever delivers.

The first thing I noticed is how fast the board goes under foot! Wow, it just flies down the line and blasts out of turns with a lot of pop. And this is in the PU construction. I have been able to take my tail slides and carves to the next level because this board gives you the speed and recovery that is just over the top. It feels equally great both frontside and backside. Taking it vertical is like cutting through soft butter with a ninja's blade. Your snaps happen with so much speed and pop you will be amazed. And, coming out of the turns the thing does not lose speed at all. That is what surprised me so much about riding in a PU construction. The simplicity of the shape delivers in spades.

I think I said enough, just get yourself a Fever and see and feel it for yourself. If you have some skills in your arsenal, this board WILL take your surfing to the next level. I think I'm going to add another one to my quiver in another tech.

Thanks to Noel I have caught the Fever. We are blessed to have a resource like surf n' show on the web to help us all and even more blessed to watch the boards that catch our eye under Noel's feet. Live, surf, and surf again.

Peace!

Hello from Australia Noel ! awesome feedback mate, would you say that it s an easy enough board to surf for an average joe surfer ? someone that is looking to start hitting the lip , cutback etc.... or you still need to surf properly to not to struggle and get frustrated with this one (vs a hybrid type of board for example)

Mathieu Popey Stoked you had fun on the Fever! The Difference between the AM1, AM2 , is the size of the fins. AM2 is the Largest and I like the Honey Comb for 3-7’ surf. The Blackstix 3.0 have more flex and V2 Foil on the inside of the side fins for more drive.

If you ride a lot of quads then you should try a Quad set up in the Fever for that extra speed. Cheers

Mathieu Revel - 7 years ago
So I surfed the board the whole week end, I just found that this board is just really good !! I mean I found it really easy to surf, responsive, simple, easy to get in the wave, simple and super well balanced! Not sure if it s the fins that I had (simple AM2 fins) but I did not find that the board was ''super'' fast VS the rocket for example (but i surf quad maybe that s why). What is the difference between am1/am2/am3, honeycomb or not ? Also you d recommend the F8 blackstick 2.0 (3.0 now) over the RTM tech 1 for speed ? Cheers!!

Stoked you like the show and thanks for the props. The Fever is very user friendly for sure but I would say this board is for an intermediate to advanced surfer. A few of my friends that are intermediate surfers bought it and absolutely love it. They mostly go fast down the line and do big carves, cutbacks, and maybe hit the lip once in a while. On another note if you are in transition from a bigger board and looking to go into riding a short board then I suggest a Hybrid board like the CI Mini, High 5, Ave Joe, or even the Pod Mod. All of these boards are much easier to surf and you will not get frustrated like riding a performance board.

I really appreciate the video and thoughtfulness put into the review VS rehashing the write-up on CI website (like some other reviewers)!

I was wondering if you could suggest some dimensions for a custom groverler/everyday go-to board for 2-4ft socal waves. I'm 5'9 @155lb, I can do basic cutback/snaps but I'm not throwing buckets of water or turning heads by any means (so begin/intermediate?). I'm mostly fearful of going too low in volume and missing out on waves whether it's due to crowds or getting into wave too late.

Thanks again

I ran some numbers on a custom on the CI website and I think 5'10" x 19 1/8 x 2 7/16... Liters 28.6 sound pretty good for you. The width will keep the board a bit more stable and the length at 5'10 will be easy to turn quickly. That's my 2 cents!!!

Thanks for getting back to me. Right now my go-to/grov is the fred stubble 5'11 x 19 3/8 x 2 9/16 (31.3L) which I realize is probably a bit big/heavy volume size (it was a used pick up).

I was able to try out the stock 5'11 fever at 27.9L and really did love the snappy feel and loose but in control tail even though the demo day was sub-par wave conditions.

Cheers on the props for our show... glad you like it. I like both EPS and Flexbar for the Fever, but if your going to order custom the Flexbar takes a bit longer. Both constructions seem about the same durability, and buoyancy but my EPS boards are lighter than my Flexbar boards. I really liked my Sampler in the Flexbar construction and I still have it after 1 year and its still Lively. I hope all of this info helps you to pull the trigger. Hey Noel giving u another shout out all the way from NZ!! the show is next level and super helpful to guys looking to dial in equipment :) I was looking for a daily driver that could handle the wide variety of waves we get locally and rebuilding a quiver around this board. I was excited to see the Fever release and after your review it was a done deal. Im 6'2/185lbs intermediate/advanced and went with custom grov dims 6'0 x 19 3/8 x 2 1/2. The board is spot on as you described able to grovel real well in 2-3ft everyday surf and on the better waves ive caught on it seems to want to come alive even more suggesting it will excel in bigger/better conditions. Thanks for the review mate it was super helpful in dialing this custom.. Keep up the ripping and the reviews !!

its an instant all time fav and will sit smack bang in the middle of my quiver as my daily. As you said they nailed it with the outline/foil/rocker on the fever giving you the feel of a HPSB but without sacrificing any speed. The rails are so sweet on this model just butter and super quick thru turns and as Pat G said it does open up your creativity with the board allowing you to pick a lot of different lines whether going up into the lip or out onto the face. ive got it combo'd up with L Toledo fins and feels insane with drive, response and release. Have u done more testing with the Toledo's and how do u like them overall?

This board is sick looking. The dimensions you got them is very close to the custom SKX I scored. How did you like surfing it at 2 3/8? My custom is 19.25 by 2 3/8. A little bit more volume at 27.5 than I am used to, but I couldn't pass up the deal I got on it. Too bad you aren't a little closer, I could loan you my SKX for the show. Would love to see what you thought of it. The XTR blanks make it feel like you are floating on the air, of course the SKX design is pretty awesome too. The 2 3/8 feels good. It's not a full rail so it feels just right. The waves were really fun last week but we do need some waves for sure. Let me know when you get a Fever and how you like it. If you get a Go Fish I recommend the 5'5". If I got another one I would go with the 5'5" for a little more rail in the water. Twin Fins are really loose and responsive so I think the 5'5" would have been better for me.

Hi Noel,
Debating between a B&W and Fever as a step up to a sampler. I tend to surf a little more front footed and would say I lack some power in my top turns. I love the sampler, but want something with a bit more hold in head high+. Also, whats your rec as far as a round tail or squash? Im 6' 175. do you think stock 5'11 or stock 6' would be best? Im stuck between dims. I usually ride around 28-29L. Did you happen to try either of these w the Dane fin? I really like the L Dane template...Thanks

Both boards are epic but I would go with the Fever. I would also go with a squash tail unless you are going to use this as a step up for waves in the 4-6+ then you could go round tail. The round tail will stiffen the board up a little so you can drive through your turns a bit more especially when the waves get a little bigger. The squash tail will be more versatile and it will go good in the 3-6 surf and feel a little looser especially in the smaller 3-4 surf. I think you could go either way on the 5'11 or 6' Fever size wise but if you are going to charge bigger waves then go 6'0. If you want your board to be a bit more maneuverable in the smaller 3-4 surf then you want to go 5'11. I guess it really depends on how your home breaks are on size and power for you to make the decision on board size. For where I live and the point breaks I surf I would go 5'11 because when it's big I can still get away with a smaller board. If it was big punchy beach break then I would go with the 6'0 so I can get into the wave early and not get stuck with late take offs all of the time.I really like the Dane Reynolds Large fin and I think they will go great in either of these two boards you are looking at. Cheers!!!!

Hi Noel. Have you ridden the T Low and if so how would you compare it to the Fever? I need a go to board for typical UK Cornish beach breaks from shoulder to overhead surf. The show is great and it's nice to see a reviewer actually surfing the boards!

Hi Noel. So standing in the shop surrounded by great boards The Fever just didn't feel right under my arm but one of your other favourite boards the Monsta Box did. I came away with the 6'1" round tail in Hyfi construction. Naturally the waves here have now turned to junk but I'll be sure and post my findings under your Monsta Box review when I have it figured out. Cheers.

That's great to know Noel and thanks for the super quick response. Much like you guys we get a little of everything here in Cornwall. At 6 feet tall and around 200lbs in rubber I'm looking at 6'1"-6'2" or 6'3" to hit my current volume range. I'd probably split the difference and go for the 6'2".

I'll go and stick a couple under my arm tomorrow and get back to you but thanks again for this remarkable resource you provide.

Daniel Turner I think you will love the Fever!!! I had a TLow for a short while but is was just an average board for me. The outline is really straight for where I surf. I think I would have like the TLow in more hollow beach breaks.

The Fever feels good in both steep waves and point breaks but if the beach breaks get 6+ and super hollow then you might need a Rook 15, Proton, Taco Grinder, etc.... I think the Fever is a mental daily driver. You will be stoked on the Fever. A bunch of my friends love their Fever's too.

Hey I really dig your reviews! I have a question about how the rails and outline on this model are. I have a Rubble/DFR that I use for when the waves get a little steeper and hollower but both of those are on the way out and I was thinking the FEVER would be a nice replacement for those. I usually ride between 18 5/8 - 18 3/4 and 2 1/4 thick but noticed this model seems to carry a little more volume. I was just wondering what dims you would relate this to with other CI models. Basically wondering if I should go on the narrower side or on the wider side especially with the wide point being slightly behind center. I'm not sure I've had a board with the wide point behind center before. I really love boards that like to whip around in the pocket and in steep sections so this board seems like a good replacement. My last question is how full are the rails? I was thinking of maybe going a little thicker but if it has relatively full rails I'll probably end up just sticking with my normal 2 1/4. Thanks!

Hi Noel,
Thanks to your review I got myself a CI Fever and I love it! It’s the best shortboard ive ever ridden! Im 6’0” and 170lbs and ride the stock 5’11 which comes near my ideal volume 28L.
Planning on ordering the Fever in Groveller dimensions like you have in your review and was hoping you could share with us on how we should order the Fever for those smaller waves. I noticed that your custom 5’7” is significantly wider from the stock 5’7” dimensions which makes me uncertain of the dimensions I should go for. So what would you recommended for a person around my weight and height? Thanks Noel, keep up the amazing reviews!

Those DIMS were similar to what I had in mind and sound great with the 2 7/16" thickness. Definitely be ordering a Fever in those DIMS. Same story here with the waves being mostly small where I live so I'm positive this Groveller Fever will be my everyday go-to board as I already love the stock 5'11" Fever!
I'll share my thoughts on how it goes when I get the chance.
Thanks for your advice Noel.

Brand T Stoked to hear you love it!!! I just ran some custom DIMS for you on the Groveler Fever and what do you think about this?
5'9 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/2 Volume 29.1, or 2 7/16 thick and Volume 28.4.

In my opinion you don't want to go too wide on the Fever to Grovel on. I would ride this Groveler in 2-5 surf which is 90% of the time in SO Cal. You will still get high Performance surfing with a little more width and float. With this Groveler being 2" shorter it will better in the trough of a smaller wave compared to your 5'11. Maybe consider going Flexbar or EPS too.

I think for waves in the 1-3 range I would ride a Flexbar Pod Mod.

Dane Reynolds is so sensitive to the reaction of his surfboards that he once told Merrick to sand a little off a specific area of the bottom of a board he tried. A few swipes of sandpaper over that area made a difference that Dane Reynolds could feel.

UniqueStranger The pros surf so fast in general it's hard to compare my surfing to there's. Boards with a lot of rocker feel like they plow water when I paddle. I only like a good amount of rocker when the waves are really steep and hollow or big and I need the rail to bite on my turns and not slide out because of the speed.
UniqueStranger
UniqueStranger - 7 years ago
That is the same assumption made in regards to the proton. It has so much entry rocker that it looks like it would be slow down the line. However, it is fast according to Dane Reynolds.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
I really like both of these boards.... but the Fever feels so lively under my feet. On paper the B&W should be faster down the line because it has lower entry rocker and a staged rocker for the flat spots on a wave. The Fever went mental for me in waves 2-6. I was caught by surprise on the overall performance of the Fever because it has continuous rocker and I even loved it in small waves. If I had to choose one it would be the Fever for waves in 2-6 foot surf. Cheers!!!

Good job on another great review. The general impression I get from the C.I. description and your review of this board is that the fever is a forgiving version of a WSL championship tour board. A high-performance all-arounder that is utilized in WSL championship tour conditions and breaks as well as local conditions and breaks.

Hi Noel. Loving you reviews mate. I felt like I have never had the right board for how I want to surf in my mind. You seem to surf with lots of flow and I wish i could improve to surf more your style! I am 185 lbs usually wear 4/3mm wetsuits. I'm 5'9 height. My wave size prob 2 - 4ft but fatter curve waves like bells in Oz.
Would I have to go custom dims with the fever? The CI website recommends 6'1" x 19 1/4" x 2 1/2" 30.8L.
I feel like I want a smaller length board to match my stance across the board better but with maybe around 32l volume.
What would you recommend mate?

rickta07 Ok this helps a bunch. A Custom Fever sounds good. I was thinking 5'11 x 19 3/8 x 2 1/2 liters 30.1. You don't want to go to wide on the Fever.

I would also recommend the Weirdo Ripper maybe the stock 5'9 Vol 31.8 or the 5'10 Vol 32.7. This board has great float and will surf high performance. I really like the WR. Maybe check one out and see what you think.
rickta07
rickta07 - 7 years ago
Thanks for the reply Noel! Intermediate i would say. Linking turns, re-entrys but always feel my cutbacks are really drawn out and can loose speed.
I feel like I have down the line speed but dont seem to really get on rail and draw the lines i would like if that makes sense. Feels more skatey than raily. If I try to get on rail on a cutback I seem to shift my weight to far to the side and can loose my balance, but mostly the turn is drawn out.
I want to give a more traditional shape a go i think.
I've been riding different shapes of late (tomo nano 6'0 20 1/4″ 2 3/4″ 39.3l with quad setup Futures k2 keel fibreglass for front, Mayhem Controller Quad Rear and knubster on bigger waves). Maybe the size isnt right for me?? I tried this board in a 5′ 10″ 19 3/4″ 2 5/8″ 35.7l thruster and it felt really great. Rail to Rail was there. I've tried other boards at 32l and whilst little harder to paddle, performance went up. I've tried down to 26l but felt like i was swimming and didnt really get waves :)
I'm not sure If you have tried the nano, doesn't matter...but I would really like to hear what you may recommend sizing in the fever as I have always wanted to try the CI Boards.
Do you think a 5'10 x 19 1/2" x 2 5/8" 31.4l work for me? Just playing with the custom figures. Cheers Noel.

Hey Noel, how do you like the Fever compared to the Black and White? I love the instant speed of the black and white and find I can ride it in smaller weaker waves as long as you can get into them. My local has slopey waves that hollow up to the inside so the B and W works great. Curious about the Fever though....

Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Matthew Jones I really like the B&W too but the Fever is fast rail to rail for me. The Fever is faster too. I think Lowers is a bit slopey but the Fever goes great out there. Besides you have a B&W all ready so you should try something new right????

Hey Noel great review like always, just wondering how this board compares to a Fred Rubble? I'm advanced but 6"0 165 so I always have to order custom. I Love my B/W and Peregrine but they are a little to flat rocker wise for beach breaks etc.. I have a Rubble and DFR that I usually use when the waves are punchier or hollow but both of those boards are on the way out. I've destroyed them both and was thinking maybe the fever would be a good replacement for my Rubble/DFR. My main question is how are the rails? I typically ride 2 1/4 but I am gaining a little weight and was thinking of 2 5/16 instead depending on how thick or thin the rails on this model are. Also how is the tail rocker? Since my Rubble and DFR are about shot I need a board that has enough tail rocker so I have the freedom to whip it in the pocket and off the bottom. My B/W and Peregrine lack the whip in tail rocker I like in hollow or punchier surf. Thanks!

Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
TRIKushbeachside Stoked you like the review. The Fever is so good but I am not sure it has enough tail rocker for you. I would say the rail is good at 2 5/16 feels like the FR. I personally do not like too much overall rocker any more. The DFR has way too much rocker for me but I do like the Rook 15. I heard the Proton is a sick board too. I have a 5'11 FR and it feels pretty good but I don't get to ride it much. It's a Mini Step up for me and the waves have been pretty small since I got it. I would go Fever or Fred Rubble.

airfrc162 If your looking for an all a rounder then I would go Fever but you might need to order it custom. The NF has too much rocker for it to be a Groveler for me.

I think if your going to use the Fever more for your trip then stepping down in liters might be a good thing after you shed that wetsuit. You will love the way the board responds with less volume but you will work harder in paddling.

Great review Noel. So can't decide between the fever in grovel dims, a sampler or stubble. I share the same height and weight as you and am an experienced surfer. Want this board for surfing average Florida days. I ride a rook 15 when the waves get good and as a travel board but need more of an all arounder that can grovel on those weak 1-4ft wind swell days. Steve McGuffey Glad you like the show. I recommend the Sampler or the Fever for the waves you surf.

The Sampler is really fast down the line but does not have the traction in the pocket compared to the Fever. So you have to decide what's more important to you. The Fever has good speed down the line and feels insane rail to rail.

The Fred Stubble is an average Groveler for me. No real wow factor just average speed, and maneuverability. I hope this helps. Cheers

Connor doherty Stoked you like the show and sorry to hear about the loss of your Zeus.

The Fever goes mental for me in 2-6 foot surf and because it has a bit more rocker then the Zeus it can handle bigger, steeper waves. Chris Wilson - 7 years ago
Okay cool, thanks Noel!
I was intending to use my Zeus as more of a good wave board for when it gets slightly steeper, hollower and bigger. It would be my next step up from my Lost V3 Rocket and Tomo Vader. Would you say this was wise or would you recommend a Fever instead for when the waves get more punchy? I would consider a Rook15 for this but am worried that the rocker may be too much of a change from my other boards, hence going with Zeus or Fever... Cheers!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Chris Wilson I think the Fever is more neutral, so even a back footed or a front footed surfer will like it. I feel like I am more neutral to front footed of a surfer. Boards like the NF that are dominate back footed surfboards I struggle with.

The other point of difference between the Zeus and Fever is rocker. The Fever has continuous rocker and more entry and exit rocker than the Zeus. To be honest with you I didn't feel the extra rocker in the Fever and it felt more like a staged rocker under my feet. The Fever is going to be more versatile compared to the Zeus. I would ride my Fever in 2-6 foot surf. That's a pretty good range, so I would say the Fever is a better daily driver compared to the Zeus.

Hi Noel, thanks for the quick response and detailed feedback.
Would you say the Fever is more suited to rear footed surfers rather than front footed then with regards to teh wide point? What would you say are the pros and cons of the two boards when compared? Which would be best for what sort of waves? Sorry for all the questions, I just ordered a custom Zeus and am considering changing it to a Fever so am in a mild panic. Cheers!

Chris Wilson Thanks glad you liked the review. I liked the Zeus but the Fever has more speed and flow rail to rail. The Fever seems to suit my surfing with the wide point a little back from center so it pivots quickly. The Fever has WOW factor for me with more snap on my turns and seemed to be a bit more forgiving. Maybe it has a bigger sweet spot, or just more user friendly. I hope this makes sense and helps you. Hi Noel Salas, I absolutely love your show as you have great knowledge that I know I can trust, and your YouTube channel is the first I go to to see a review on a board. Thank you so much for doing what you do.
My question is that on CI’s website, it lists that the Fever is for a weak/mushy wave board to a medium/steep wave board, but not for strong/barrels. However, Pat G says he rides it at 6-8ft backdoor and Haleiwa (aside from weaker waves). Also, when I do a rail view of the shortboards on the CI website, I notice that the Fever has an overall rocker (2 1/2” on tail and 4 7/8” on nose) that is more than some of the other HPSB for strong/barrel waves. I surf the powerful breaks of Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Do you think that the Fever could handle from waist up to head 1/2 at Ocean Beach from steep to strong/barrel conditions? I’m basically looking for a quiver killer. Thank you :)

I can see how this could be a bit confusing.... I would say the Fever can handle waist high to 1/2 of Ocean Beach no problem. I think the rocker is there for you and it will also go in the waist high waves with a little punch. If I lived where you do I would choose the Fever out of all the CI boards for the size waves as a quiver killer. Good call!!!!.

Great question and thanks for the props  on the review. The FR I had was just ok for me.... it felt good in the pocket and in carves but it lacked that extra speed down the line. Most of my friends that had a FR said it was the best HPSB they have ever had. From what I understand the FR was great selling board for CI for a good while. The Fever just has something special about it for me. It seemed to have great drive in and out of turns, great down the line speed, and each turn seam to have a bit of flare to it. The 5'7 Fever I rode in this video is a magic board for me. It feels right even when I am off in my surfing, if that makes sense. My good friend Casey who just got a stock 5'10 Fever is freaking on the speed and responsiveness of the Fever too. He is a goofy footer, and I would say that he is an intermediate surfer.  So for him the Fever is legit!!!

dude your reviews are so legit! I got a question for a weekend warrior like myself that does basic cutbacks and lip hits, would you recommend the Sampler or the Fever? I usually surf Pismo Beach 2-5 foot range. Cheers man
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Cheers on the comments for the show. Pismo can be pretty punchy beach break but then it can be a bit mushy too. I guess my answer to your question is this.... do you surf waves that are 2-3 more than 3-5? I think you could order the Fever custom and get a great 2 in 1 board just  so long as you don't go to wide. Here is a good example..... my standard high performance DIMS are 5'9 x 18 7/8 x 2 3/8 for the Fever. My Groveler DIMS are 5'7 x 19 x 2 3/8, as you can see I only changed my DIMS a little in two areas and the changes are not super drastic. I am really focused on the length being 2" shorter for quicker turns in smaller waves and not going to wide because that will change the outline of this board too much. If you mostly Grovel in small waves and you are gearing up for Summer then you might just want a Sampler. I hope all of this helps. Cheers!!

Hi from Australia. Your style of communication is calm and engaging. Great to watch. The fever looks and sounds super fun.
I was wondering if you could talk to some of your taller riders like over 6.0. Tall skinny guys. Getting there take on boards for this group.
Being tall changes the sweet spot balance point. I am wondering if they preffer a certain board. Say for the range the fever is for.
Im 6.3 176 pounds.

Again super videos.
Cheers

crussandrews Stoked you like the show..... So on your comment I would imagine your struggles are similar to guys that are short and stalky. Custom DIMS are a must right?

If you order a custom Fever the sweet spot should be relevant to the DIMS you order. I know Britt Merrick is 6'6 and pretty thin and he does his HPSB at roughly his height on the B&W and he rips on them. I hope this helps.

My 4 board quiver for where you surf would look like this.5'7 Fever (groveler 1-3)5'9 Fever (3-5)5'11 Proton(Round Tail) or Black Beauty 6-86'2 or 6'4 Black Beauty

What would be your ideal 4 board quiver.. I had a bunny chow and loved it. Right now I have a Sampler in a 6'1" with a swallow tail that is pretty rad, but seems funky when I but it on rail. then I have a Black and White 6'4" and then I have some JS boards for bigger and more hollow surf (monsta 6 and forget me not)

Looking for more of any everyday board. Mostly surf Blacks and La jolla Reefs and Sunset Cliffs.. thanks

I am 6'4" 210 ( should be 200Lb :) )

Hi Noel. Big fan of the reviews, keep on the great work!

I was almost convinced on the sampler, but then I´ve got second thoughts after the fever review.. Your help would be much appreciated, here´s the deal:

Im mostly looking for a summer board, but if it could handle the rest of the year when up to 4ft and not hollow (when hollow I have other alternatives) would be perfect. My current board has 5 inches tip nose rocker (1.5 at 12´) and 2.1 tail rocker (0.9 at 12’), staged rocker.
Do you have idea of the rocker dims of your sampler/fever?
I would like a complementary board for the quiver instead of a replacing one.

Thanks in advanced for the help!

Manuel Marques I think your Sampler will suit you fine. I would love to try it as a swallow tail..., let me know how it goes

Perfect! Thanks for the quick answer. Regarding the rocker dims, the sampler has a lower rocker than the one I have now right? I think it will suit me fine!

Stoked you like the show. I think if your looking for a Summer board then you will love the Sampler and it can handle up to 4' foot surf (not hollow) just fine. The Sampler has great speed down the line and I would want that for a Summer board in my quiver. The Fever is what I recommend for the 2 in one board. It can be a small wave high performance board in the 2-3 foot range and I would ride my 5'7 Fever in waves up too 5'. I would not recommend the Fever in 0-3 foot range of Grovelers. I think the Sampler or Pod Mod will be way more fun on those gutless days.I hope this helps!!! Cheers

Lauly Tof I think you will really like the Fever. What you said about the continuous rocker is pretty true for me too. I usually prefer staged rocker boards too but the Fever feels different under my feet and that's why I was So surprised. I don't think it has s flat spot in the rocker but it sure has a great flow to it on the waves.

Hey Noel, great vids mate!
I'm looking to invest in a new board & hoping you can help me decide between the black & white & the fever. I'm pretty happy with my groveller so looking for a good all round performance shortboard. Would you consider the fever to be a slight step down from the black & white? Would I be trading any responsiveness for the bigger sweet spot & the speed? Which of the two boards do you think would perform better in hollow waves? If you could only choose one HPSB to go with your sampler would you go with the black & white or the fever? Also I'm thinking about investing in the flex bar, do you think that technology is better suited to either one of these boards?
My home breaks are mostly beachies but looking for a go to board when the waves are decent & also to travel with.
I know that there's no magic board that's perfect for all conditions but if I'm going to fork out for the flex bar I want to try to get it right. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Keep up the good work mate!

Jonathon Mckay Thanks for the props on the review.

I think the Fever is more High Performance than the B&W. I also love the Flexbar tech but I have not tried it in a HPSB and on waves over 6'.

I noticed very little to no chatter on the Flexbar construction. I think it has something to do with the high density bar in the board and the layer of high density foam in the middle of the board too that reduces the vibration.

Maybe I will order one soon so I can give you better feedback.

Hi Noel,
Everything ok? On the other day we were changing ideas on the sampler review comments area. I need to buy a groveler and a shortboard, and was planning to buy the sampler to use as my step-down. But now there is this new board, the Fever. Again, your experience with CI boards could be very helpful to my decision. Can you please help me on these 2 questions?

1) What do you think could be a better solution for an intermediate to advance surfer, surfing mostly pointbreaks (portuguese power), and who wants to buy (both high-performance) a groveler and a shortboard: (1) Sampler (groveler dims) and Fever (shortboard dims), (2) two Fevers (groveler and shortboard dims) or (3) other?

2) Following the number (3) of the first question, do you think the Fever holds point break waves with more power as a shortboard (chest to head .5)? The CI website tell us that the board is more suited to weak/medium waves, and I'm still not convinced with the Rook15 (more hollow waves), neither the Black and white.

As always, many thanks!

These point breaks that I surf have power but they aren’t very hollow, and often there is some wind that brings some bumps, that’s why I’m not convinced with the Rook15. Using your info I think the Fever can be a good option for a shortboard, as it has a bigger sweet spot, so it’s easier to ride and maybe more all-rounded, so it may not need the waves to be so aligned, which is the case the Rook15 needs to excel.
As always thanks a lot for your comments!! And trying to say a true fact in a funny way, the CI Company should make you a statue so much is the good info you provide on your videos/reviews/comments.

All is good here and I am sorry if I missed your questions. My thoughts.... If the point breaks you surf have good power then I am not sure you need the Sampler. I love the Sampler for small waves but if the waves are hollow and have some power then I would go with a custom Fever for the 2-3 foot days and I think it could handle the 3-5 surf if you don't go to wide. For a high performance short board in hollow surf I would go with the Fever or Rook 15. Both of these boards have more rocker and they will help with  traction in your turns and the rocker will match the curve of the hollow waves too. The Fever has a bigger sweet spot than the Rook 15 so it's a bit easier to ride too. I also think the Fever is faster down the line.  That's my 2 cents..... I hope this helps. If you surf small mushy waves for the Summer then I would go with a Sampler for those small days.

Nice review Noel. little help please. i´m 5.7 150 pounds and my everyday board is a rusty the rooster 5.7 27,7 lts. i´m thinking getting a sampler or a fever. What dims? thanks
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Hard to say because I have not ridden the Rusty Rooster but if it can handle tube riding then it must have at least medium entry and exit rocker. On the Sampler I think you will notice immediate speed down the line compared to the Rooster and the Fever. The Fever will feel very responsive and have a bit more snap to it than the Sampler. Can't compare the Fever and the Rooster much without felling one in my hands. Your Rooster is pretty wide at 19.5 for a High Performance short board. If you order the Fever custom I would not go wider than 19 1/4 for someone your size and skill level. The wider you go the stiffer the feel and it will have less maneuverability in the pocket.

thanks Noel for the quick answer. Well i´m a weekend surfer in the 40´s . surfing about 20 years i might say i´m between intermediate and advanced. one more question, what do you think it will be the main diference i´ll feel with the sampler or the fever considering the rooster.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Looking at the Rusty Rooster DIMS it seems as though it's a pretty good groveler. I would say that the Sampler is going to be more like the Rooster you have. The Sampler is perfect for the Summer months ahead and if you are going with Stock DIMS then I suggest the 5'7" at 26.7 Liters. I know the volume is a little lower then your Rooster but the Sampler paddles really well. What is your skill level? After I know this then I can help you with custom Fever DIMS because the stock DIMS are a bit long and wide for you compared to the Rooster you have.

Nice review as always Noel, how'd you compare the fever to the sampler?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Cheers on the review!!! The Sampler is a bit faster down the line but the Fever has more snap and flare in and out of turns. I felt more confident on the Fever Groveler in my turns compared to the Sampler. Both boards are great but the Fever does have that High Performance feel even in the small stuff and super easy to surf.

This is going to be a big transition and I suggest going with a 6'3 or longer at first and then gradually go shorter. The 6'3 will feel really responsive compared to your longboard. Cheers!!!
