Hi Real watersports, Just came across your video and would just like too say how helpful it is.
I am 5,11 and 205 lbs and am an adveragege surfer wanting to improve, I don't get chance to sure that often as i live in the UK, but have 2 to 3 surf trips each year.
I have just hade a trip to Costa Rica for 2 weeks were i took a 6,8 custom, My problem is that by the end of each trip i have got too grips with my board but wasted too long getting there.
Reading about the TL Pro Carbon construction Average Joe sounds perfect....what is your advice and i can't seem to find it in any other colours than white. Thanks

+Ash2010Man thank for your question. The TL Pro Carbon boards are only manufactured in pre-defined colorways, so you're going to have limited color choices there. You can always order a custom PU/Poly Average Joe or any other PU/Poly surfboard from any brand and get the exact colors/paint/design you want.
Average Joe will work for you in either TL Pro Carbon construction or PU/Poly, it's a good, user friendly, well rounded design, similar to the ...Lost RV or ...Lost Puddle Jumper (both of which you should also consider!). For your weight and skill level, you should be looking at boards in the neighborhood of 46-49L volume. +Aniss WU thanks for your question. The RV and Puddle Jumper are a little more versatile than the Average Joe. The Average Joe is an extreme groveler like the ...Lost Couch Potato. Hey, I'm 6 foot 145 pounds and I ride mostly smaller waves. I live in jersey so the waves aren't really ever too great so I want something I can paddle and catch. I'm an average surfer that's why I'm going with the average joe. I don't really do any cut backs just take the wave and ride it right or left. What is a good size for me? One guy is saying a 5'5 and another is saying 5'9. Please respond asap thank you!!

What? Jersey has great breaks. Manasquan Inlet perhaps. Surfed it many times when I lived there.

First off. Amazing info and support from you guys. I'm 6', 180lbs and in decent shape. I surf in the Pacific NW and ride a 7'3"x22.75" single-fin egg, and a beginner to intermediate level, currently surfing about once a week. I'm looking for max wave time to progress and in the winter I struggle to duck dive the 7'3" (it has a ton of volume). I'd also like something a bit more maneuverable than the 7'3" that can handle slightly bigger waves. Would you recommend the Average Joe as a step up board, or also thinking one of the Lost Domestic series..? What size/volume would you recommend? Thanks!

Nate - 36L is a pretty generous amount of foam for your weight, so I don't think this board is too small for you in most situations. It sounds like a little more practice and building your skills is all it's going to take to solve this problem. Boards like the Average Joe are designed to grovel to the extreme but even these boards have their limit. If you're chasing microscopic waves that even a beefy Average Joe has trouble on, a big flat longboard is probably your best chance, but again we're talking extreme low-end.... otherwise just keep practicing and focus on keeping yourself in the pocket/curl where you're going to find it easiest to keep riding without bogging down. Hey guys. I'm a beginner/intermediate 6'0" 150lb surfer looking to maximize my wave count. Over Christmas I purchased a 5'7" 36L Joe to bring into the smallest waves I could find. I've caught some great waves on this board, but I feel like paddling into waves is more difficult than it should be. The board sits pretty deep in the water, and once I'm up I can typically make one maneuver before I loss speed and go over the back of the wave. Is it too small? This board was a custom and the sizing was encouraged directly from CI. Thanks!

Love your video man! I am 5'9 130 pound surfer beginner/intermediate level but planning on getting a LOT better real fast. Would you suggest a 5'5 or a 5'7 size?

Hey Trip, I am 5`7 (170cm) 125lbs ( 56 kg) - begginer- surfer ( less than one year in the water) .
learned to surf on a 7ft soft board and recently tried nsp elements 6`6/6`4 board to try and step up and progress my level.

Recently i have head about the averge joe and watched this great review and wanted to know if this board could suit me as a first board and help me progress, and if so, which size should I get (5`7, 5`9, 5`11 etc

@guy-jay b Thanks for your question. For your weight and skill level, you should look at boards with a minimum of 29 Liters volume. The Average Joe packs so much volume, you could actually ride it very short, but the 5'7" would be a great place to start for your current skill level (the 5'7" has 36L of volume). Hey! I'm a bit past beginner, I surf a custard point 9'2" longboard, just cruising, nothing fancy.
I'm looking for something that'll help me progress and suit the often knee high mushy waves on the south coast here.
I'm 6' and weigh 210lbs... Do you think this'll suit me? What size?

@Ben 888 Thanks for your question. For 210lb beginner whose starting to gain some skills, look at boards in the 48 liters volume range to be successful. How durable is this board? Would it survive luggage stress on airplane?

@obninsk24 Thanks for your question. The PU/Poly construction Average Joe boards have same durability as every other PU/Poly board (this is the most common surfboard construction today). The TL Pro Carbon construction Average Joes will be even more durable, in my opinion one of the most durable constructions available today. Both Pu/Poly construction and TL Pro Carbon constructions will be fine for traveling on an airplane, just pack the board with appropriate padding in a good surfboard travel bag. Airlines have been known to do some crazy things to surfboards but if they treat it with respect the board will be fine to travel if you pack it correctly.

Hi, I'm 195lbs, 6'1 and started surfing 3months ago when I moved to Martinique (small caribbean island).
I've been surfing almost everyday since, my 7'9 bic malibu mostly but also a 7' Bic egg and a 7'3 Venon egg. I can surf the waves back and front side, going up and down the open face in wide turns all the way through the shore. I'm trying some cutbacks now but I'd like to buy a smaller board which would be more manoeuvrable.
I asked my high skilled neighbor who also gave me my first surfing lesson and he told me to look for these kinds of boards (Average Joe, Firewire potatoes etc..), but not to go below 6' as I still need volume to paddle with ease and catch waves easily.
What do you think ? Is this board a wise choice ? Which size should I go for ?

@Matthias Thomas Lamotte Remember to look at board volume (how does it float) instead of length. Based on your body weight and how quickly you're progressing, you should look at boards in the 42-44 liter range. The 5'11" CI Average Joe has approx 43L of volume so would be perfect for you.

As you continue to progress, you'll keep the floaty Average Joe and probably add something a little more performance (closer to a "pointy" board) to your quiver, and switch between the two depending on how the waves are.

Your friend is giving you good advice to not go too small, but you can get away with shorter boards as long as you're keeping the volume up with floaty boards (thick with round noses etc.). Have fun surfing and let us know how it goes!

@Joe Livingstone Yes, the Average Joe is a great beginner board. When you're a beginner, foam is your friend, and this board packs a lot of foam into a easy to ride shape. The width and stability make the board very user friendly.

@Guy Katz the Joe is probably closest to either the Layzboy or the RV. It's really an all around board for average surfers rather than a dedicated groveler (like the BF or the CP! Hope that helps and thanks for the video tip - will put it in our pipeline. Thanks.
