Channel Islands "Bonzer 5 Shelter" Surfboard Review by Noel Salas EP. 18

This video is about Channel Islands "Bonzer 5 Shelter" Surfboard Review by Noel Salas EP. 18. In this Episode Noel heads to Oxnard, CA to interview Malcolm Campbell the creator of the Bonzer for an inside scoop on the collaboration of this 5 fin design. Noel get’s his hands on two Bonzer 5 Shelter boards from Channel Islands Surfboards. One’s a groveler at 5’7 x 19 1/8 x 2 3/8 and the other a standard short board at 5’9 x 18 7/8 x 2 5/16. I really enjoyed the Bonzer says Salas but he did need a little help from Duncan Campbell on how to maximize the boards capabilities. The first week of surfing the boards were tough as Salas quotes as he had to shift his weight for a more back footed approach to the boards design. As time went on in the videoing of the review Noel states that he loves the Bonzer and he is sad for the review to be over. Here is what the Channel Islands website has to say about the Bonzer 5 Shelter. “Since 1969 only a few miles and some of California’s best point breaks separated Al Merrick and The Campbell Brothers, Malcolm and Duncan. Unbeknown to most, Al and Malcolm began working together in 1985, when Malcolm came on board and shaped for Al/CI for over 20 years. now 30 years on, a design offering is born out of that experience and mutual respect. The Shelter model is our contemporary Bonzer 5 shortboard. It’s name was inspired by the 2001 film, Shelter by Chris Malloy and Moonshine Conspiracy. We provided a 6’2″ and a 6’4″ for the film. The boards were ridden by Taylor Knox, Donovan Frankenreiter, and a cast of visiting surfers. The Shelter is primarily a squash tail, and can be custom ordered with a swallow, round pin, or thumb tail. It is a versatile board that works well in all conditions. When deciding on size, go with your favorite dimensions, taking in consideration the conditions and type of waves you anticipate using the board for. Utilizing the Bonzer 5 system, which we have developed and refined over the last 34 years, the Shelter provides quick easy rail to rail transition, and unparalleled drive out of turns. It also maintains speed exceptionally well through cutbacks, and has been known to have an uncanny ability to navigate through the barrel. We have been working for years toward getting the Bonzer fully into the mix at the highest levels; with CI that time has come. Have at it and enjoy the Bonzer Experience.” -Malcolm and Duncan Campbell The goal of this dynamic collaboration is to bring the Bonzer, one of surfing’s most unique and original designs, to the forefront and to continue CI’s tradition of surfers building quality surfboards.

hi, i've ridden the bonzer for about 4 sessions now and still having a hard time adjusting to it... for every decent wave i catch, i'll have a couple waves where i'm digging a rail or i'm to far up on it and not applying enough back foot pressure to get decent bottom turns... do you think it's from foot placement or more from fin position? your insight would be appreciated.. thx, mahalo..!

Marjun Advincula It likes to be surfed off your back foot. Try to get your foot all the way back and sit down into your bottom turns.

Hola Noel
Muchas gracias por el video. ¿Recomendarías esta tabla para un principiante que apenas está cogiendo holas verdes?

Hi Noel
Love the channel and reviews, by far the most objective around. Love also that you're doing other brands as it brings a new perspective. Quick question: what was your favourite setup, the 5'7 or 5'9 and why? I ride just on the lower side of your volume range (5'8 x 145 though) and just need to come up with the order, was thinking of going with 5'9 x 18"5/8 x 2"5/16 w/ polished standard glassing (heavier) but you got me thinking of going shorter as I normally ride really short crafts (Evo 5'2 my favourite board ever) and normally surf a long pointbreak.
Any thoughts?

gori277 Stoked you like the channel!!! I liked the shorter board better because we're always surfing small waves. It just fits better in the pocket compared to a longer board. The point breaks I am surfing are a bit slopey so a shorter, wider board seems to work better for me.

I think this Bonzer Shelter model design can only handle going so wide and short. If you want to go really short and wide then I recommend the Biscuit Bonzer. Cheers!!!

Love the reviews been subscribing for awhile now. Im thinking about getting a bonzer shelter for a step up type board, mostly for paddle, do you think if my normal short board, in good waves, is 6' x 193/4 x2 1/2 the Bonzer 6'3 would be a good board or too much? I felt the rails where pinched enough to not seem bulky on the Bonzer. Im just wondering if you think it will still go rail to rail smoothly. Im 46 decent surfer just a weekend warrior 10 months out of the year. Keep up the ripping and trying so many interesting boards NS.

William Russell Sounds fun... all of those waves are epic. I think the 6'3 will work at both... it's really up to you. I don't like a wide board in hollow waves.

I heard that Bonzers are sick in the barrel.

essential want to be able to use it at bigger Cstreet Malibu and Rincon as well as somewhat barreling Playa Grande and Silver strand.

William Russell I like the looks of the 6'2 better unless you go custom and narrower down a 6'3...

How big of waves for this step up and what does it break like? Is it hollow or a point break?

William Russell Glad you like the show and thanks for subscribing.

Do you know the Volume on your 6'0? I was thinking the 6'2 sounds pretty good. The 6'3 seems a bit wide for a step up...

I was lucky enough to get a hp Bonzer 5 from Malcom..i can only applaud this review as being spot on! Malcom handshapes these beauties as well. You need to adjust your style (think long turns from behind the peak and into the pocket) and position your fin correctly then it's just pure magic!! Thank you Malcom!

Nice review, I'm all for trying new equipment but I honesty gotta say that your turns looked much more forced with this board than on others and transitions didn't seem as fluid. Just my opinion, love the reviews and insight keep it up

Thanks for your honesty. I really had fun on these boards and it is very different than anything else I have ever ridden. You should try one yourself and see how it goes for you. If you don't buy one maybe just give one a go at a Demo day or something! Cheers

What is your skill level? What are the DIMS for your beach break board right now? I used my same DIMS for my Groveler board and my standard short board.

I'm 5'10 and 175 lbs and not sure what size to get. For beach breaks and 44yo.

8080RAFA I had two boards in the review. The black traction pad board is 5'7 x 19 1/8 x 2 3/8 and the yellow traction pad board is 5'9 x 18 7/8 x 2 5/16. The 5'7 is a Groveler and it goes mental.

Thanks for the comment and the Bonzer is LEGIT!! I really had fun riding these boards and they go rail to rail really nice but it did take a bit getting used too. I cant really compare the Bonzer to anything I have ever ridden before because it's so different. I highly recommend this board super fun!!!
