In this review Noel Salas rides his two custom 5'6 Peregrine grovelers in all different size conditions. The Peregrine is one of Dane Reynolds recent board models from Channel Islands. It comes stock as a standard short board but these two customs are for small wave ripping. This board is built for speed with a single concave running through the bottom and four channels between the fins to increase drive. Noel talks about the Peregrine groveler in two different materials Epoxy and Polyurethane. In this review Noel also introduces Trace the new GPS system that goes on the nose of his surfboard. He will use Trace to gather data on what the major differences are between EPS and the PU boards. Noel also connects with Future fins and uses Trace to compare the speed and flex in fins to understand the Future Ride number system. This is the first surfboard review of this kind on Surf Show and Tell where Noel goes into detail with fins and surfboard material. Here is what the Channel Islands website has to say about the Peregrine. Named after the fast and powerful falcon that tends to breed on coastal cliffs. This new model connects with the board’s design for fast, powerful surfing and reflects Dane and Courtney’s interest in falconry. Four-channels fuel this all around high performance short board suitable for all wave types. Designed for maximum down the line speed, quick transitions, and big rail turns. The peregrine has a low entry rocker that’s accelerated through the back. The rail rocker is low but with ample break around the front fins and staged by the exit of the channels, creating extreme release near the trailing fin and off the tail. Center rocker is straighter and fast with the effect being exaggerated by the deep channels running out the back. The channels sit within a generous single concave that runs the length of the board and goes flat at the tail block. The flat deck provides positive flex patterns, volume distribution and feel under the feet. Should be ordered an 1/8th of an inch thinner than a customer’s usual thickness. (i.e. If the customer usually rides a board with a 2 1/2 center thickness, they should order The Peregrine at 2 3/8 and can expect it to have the same general rail thickness, feel and flotation as a board that is 2 1/2). Rails are round, medium to full. Designed to work best in waist to ceiling high surf. Ride this board your same height up to a couple inches longer. Also makes a good smaller wave board when ordered shorter and wider. *ALL Peregrines come stock with four channels, and are thruster only. The DIMS for this small wave board are 5'6 x 19 3/8 x 2 3/8 Volume 27.3 making this board shorter, wider, and thicker than his standard short board Peregrine. This small wave board is very fast and is super versatile because of the of the tail rocker it can handle a heavier wave than the Sampler. Order this board custom and see for yourself. Hey Noel, I know this is an older vid but I was curious on how you liked the channels in less than average conditions. Would you still ride this board (channels) on a junky day..?! Curious because I have a new board with 4 small channels on the way and was pretty sure it was good in all average so cal conditions...hb/newport...etc. Thanks brother.

I'm deciding between Lost Voodoo child or possibly getting a custom 5'9, 19 3/8, 2 3/8 peregrine. Only thing with the peregrine is it better to stick with PU or order it flexbar because most of the time I end up in soft frustrating surf but want a board when it gets a bit more punchy. Hoping flexbar might help if surf turns off?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
bodhi tree The Peregrine has the right rocker to be a small wave board too. I think you will dig it. Make sure you go 1/8 thinner on the rails because they are full. Make sure you check the liters on your custom that's all. Enjoy!!

Awesome, thanks for the help. I didn't know before this review that more performance-esque boards like the peregrine could be customised much smaller. I thought it would change the dimensions from stock so much that it became almost a different shape all together.

bodhi tree I think it would go great in Flexbar. It has great flex and feel and I like it in mushy waves. This will be a very versatile board in waves 1-6 feet.

Hey Noel..love your channel and fantastic review as always..i wonder if i should custom order the peregrine groveler in 5'7 x 19 x 2 5/16 Volume 26.7 or the sampler in same dimension (5'7 x 19 x 2 5/16 Volume 26.7). i'm 65kg lives in Bali and only surf small to medium waves and just want a one board quiver
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
Glad you like the show.... I think if you are only surfing small waves and they are not to hollow then I would go with the Sampler. If the waves you surf are a bit punchy and have a steep face then you might want to go with the Peregrine Groveler because it has more tail rocker and it will hold better when the surf gets a bit hollow. On another note my favorite small wave board of all time is the Sampler..... You know your home break the best so this is my two cents. I hope it helps. Cheers!!

Great stuff, thanks! How did you like the Captain Fin CF vs. the AM2? I use the AM2 as my go to fin, and wanted to try something a bit different. Also, how do you like the standard peregrine vs. the fred rubble? Thanks!!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
+michael day Glad you liked the review.... The CF is almost the same as the AM2 in template so I liked them both. If you want to try something new I would go completely different and maybe buy a good small wave fin like the F8 Black Stix 3.0 by Futures. They have V Foil and they are super fast with lot's of spring out of turns. The AM2 is my go to fin and I really like it in all wave types and you will even see a lot of the pro's using them on the CT. Try the F8's if you are looking for a good SMALL wave fin. Your AM2's are gold in my book!!! Cheers....

My last three boards have been CI, but I was thinking about trying a Rusty or Super for my next thruster. I think I'll stay with CI just because of this review. It's awesome to have a review like this to explain a board - especially when you're considering paying $700 + to try something new. Thanks for the info and keep up the good work, Noel. I really appreciated the eps/pu comparison with the supporting track data. Very informative and a really good (objective) analysis. How do you think upgrading the glass to standard would compensate for a strong wind in an eps? I'm envisioning an advantage in terms of weight and strength.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
Great comments on the show. I am stoked to hear that this is a great help for you. I also think you nailed it on a heavy glass job for the EPS. In this review my EPS is a team light at 4.5 lbs but i think it would be better with an Ultra Light to help in the wind. I am currently reviewing the New Flyer in 3 different materials and one is an EPS with a 6oz S Cloth and it's a bit too much. Go Ultra light on EPS and you will be stoked..... Cheers

How would you compare this board to the sampler?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
The Peregrine groveler is a good two in one board. It can handle a little bigger wave. The Sampler is such a good small wave board and if your building a quiver then go with the Sampler as a small wave board and the Peregrine as a standard short board. If you want a small wave board that can handle 4-6 surf then the Peregrine Groveler works great. Cheers!!!

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
I like the Peregrine better. You would have to order it custom though right if you want it to be a groveler? They both have full rails but the Peregrine has less entry rocker and is a bit faster because of the channels.

+RGB Videos I have been using Trace for roughly 2 months now and it has really improved my surfing by knowing what boards work good with what fins. I think Trace is a great tool for anyone who wants to know the information on how fast, calories, wave count, degree of turn, how much air, etc.... I think the real benefit to Trace is dialing in your equipment, surfboard, fins, and know what fins are going faster in each board. It really all depends on the surfer and how much they want to improve in their surfing and figure out what works best for them to maximize their surfing time. I had the Rip Curl watch too and I think the Trace Unit is way more accurate with all of the data. Trace has Trace Video where I can upload video that my brother is shooting on the beach and get all of the analytics on the computer screen and compare those notes to what the app says on my phone. They are consistent every time and I cannot say that about the Rip Curl watch. I am not trying to negative here just give you my honest opinion. The Trace unit can also be used directly with a Go Pro and sync them together so your analytics are on the video too. Trace is legit.... I hope this helps.

How do thermotech F8's compare to those other-tech F8's?
I like thermotech F8's, that's all I use.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
+Bond Summers I am not well versed in the  thermotech F8's so it's hard for me to answer your question. I know that the thermotech fins are a composite fin and the Black Stix F8 have a use Epoxy Resin and carbon so they are super light and very fast. The Black Stix F8's also have the V2 foil for extra added speed and I am not sure if the thermotech F8's have that. I know the Black Stix F8 3.0 are the lightest and fastest fin in the world from what Futures says on their website. I don't know if they are fastest and lightest fins in the world as I have not done that research but it sounds to me like these new Black Stix F8 3.0 are lighter and faster then the thermotech F8's. I hope this helps.... Cheers!

Hey man! this was super helpful, since I already have a more modern and fun fish surfboard I think that I'm going for the PM... one last thing:I'm 6'0" and roughly 88Kg, can I get the 5'8" 33,5l in your opinion?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
+Alessandro Sozzi They really are very different boards. The Mini is more of. a Cruiser and the PM can do tight turns. The Mini is going to feel more like a fish type board. Both boards are really fun but i favor the PM. I hope this helps....

You're more than welcome! I need to ask you a question..I'm going to buy a new board, and I'm struggling between the Mini and the Pod Mod...Head says PM, but heart says Mini...is there such a dramatic difference surf, when comparing the two? Especially for the tail shape, which is my biggest concern..

Another fantastic review and what I was waiting for. I noticed you didn't go 1/8 thinner for the Groveler like you did with the regular Peregrine. Would you recommend keeping the same thickness as standard shortboard when getting the Groveler Peregrine? I saw the regular Peregrine in person and was hesitant to order it due to the flat deck full rail. Being a smaller rider who surfs weak HB condition, I prefer boards with a bit more volume but not so much at the rails where I can't sink it. I'm 140lbs and normally ride 5'7" x 18 3/16 x 2 3/16 standard HP shortboard. I was afraid to get the regular Peregrine at 2 1/8 and not have enough paddle power to get into weaker surf. I got the stock 5'2" Pod Mod and it was perfect, it went well even in overhead beachbreak a few times.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
+Yuno mi Thanks for the compliments on the review. I did go 1/8 thicker on my groveler because my standard Peregrine short board was 2 1/4 and it worked perfect to what CI recommended. I think if the rails weren't full on the Peregrine then my groveler DIMS would have been 5'6 x 19 3/8 x 2  7/16 or 2 1/2. Because the rail is full I stayed at 2 3/8 and it felt perfect. I think I could have gone 19 1/8 wide or even 19 and I would have like that too. I hope this helps..... Cheers!

Nice review! What was the biggest difference you felt with the squashed down versions of the board in comparison with it in stock dims?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
+Jesse Urane Thanks for the compliment on the review. The biggest difference for me was the way the groveler version moved in the small mushy high tide waves so quickly.  I am sure it's because of the width throughout the board along with it being super short. The groveler model felt like it could go in some bigger surf and hold with no issues. I think if I ordered the groveler Peregrine again I would go 5'7 x 19 x 2 5/16 Volume 26.7and use it in small and bigger waves and it would go insane. These DIMS would be in the middle of the road between 5'9 and the 5'6. Cheers!!!

@Surf Show and Tell Reviews That's an interesting perspective...thanks! Any chance that you've tried a stock dimensioned sampler? Looking forward to the reviews of all the new boards CI has been putting out lately...must have a lot on your plate hah !
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
+Torrey B Thanks for the comment and being on it. I like them both but I think the Sampler is faster down the line and better for small waves. The Peregrine has more tail rocker so it will hold way better than the Sampler when the waves get a bit heavier. The Peregrine Groveler is more versatile in transitioning between small to bigger waves. I recommend it for surfers who can't afford to have a small wave board and a standard short board. The Peregrine Groveler is that 2 in one board that can handle waves up to 5-6 feet no problem..i will ride the Sampler when the waves are 2-4 mushy and the Peregrine Groveler in 2-6 range. You know me I want to try everything...... Cheers!
