I ordered two stock 5’5” x 18 ¾ x 2 5/16 Liters 25.8 in the new CI Spine-Tek construction… one board with Futures Fin boxes and the other has FCSII. I test both of these boards in perfect 1-2’ and 3-4’ surf to find the range that best suits this model. I found the Rocket Wide to be very fast, responsive, and most of all it has good flow in transition from turn to turn. I can honestly say that this board suits my style of surfing best in 1-3’ surf. I highly recommend this board for small waves I think it suits all level of surfers. The Rocket Wide is not only a favorite of Surf n’ Shows for 2018… it’s also my top pick for best Groveler for 2018 in 1-3’ surf.

Great review as usual Noel! I'm an inch over 6ft, and around 150 pounds. I'm 16 years old so keep in mind I will probably still grow a bit more. My normal shortboard is a 5'10 ½ Fever from Channel Islands, and about 26.4 liters. I recently picked up a 5'8 Rocket Wide, and its about 30.3 liters. I took for a few surfs already, and it feels much to big for me. Not in length but in the thickness and how buoyant it is. I'm pretty skinny for my height, and the Rocket Wide feels thick enough to the point of where I feel like I can't whip through turns very well. It just feels very big under my feet. I'm going to trade it in for a shorter version of the Rocket Wide, but was wanting your opinion on what size you think I should downsize to. I was thinking a 5'6 or a 5'7. What are your thoughts? I would appreciate it if you would respond. Thanks!

@Surf n Show Reviews I'll try the 5'6! Thanks!

Nate Cox That’s way to big for you... I like the liters on your Fever. Try to stay roughly the same.... 5’6” sounds about right

Awesome review Noel I might have to get one!
I am same height as you 5'9 but I'm 18.5 pounds heavier. So me = 178.5 pounds or 81kg.
The thing is, I want to draw the same lines as you do.... (I prob never will as you absolutely rip! I'd love to see you wildcard into an event and surf against KS!!)

My question is, can I just get same length and width board, but just make it thicker? I'm thinking if I go wider or longer my lines would be more drawn out??

I'm no maths genius, but playing around on the calculator:

So for you 5'5 x 18 3/4 X 2 5/16 = 25.8 litres
Your weight 72.5kg divide by 25.8 litres = 2.81
Don't ask me what the 2.81 means, maybe litres per kg??

Me @ 81kg divide by 2.81 = 28.8 litres
So maybe my dims would be 5'5 x 18 3/4 x 2 9/16 = 28.6 litres or go 18 7/8 to get 28.8 litres.

For you to have the same board but at 2 9/16 it might be maybe a corky feeling, not able to sink a rail etc...but for me maybe it would feel good because maybe I can sink the rail better being heavier?

Does my thinking sound right or am I off the planet?
Otherwise for me to get 28.8 litres and a stock board dims I would have to go 5'7 x 19 1'4 x 2 7/16.
*Keep the reviews coming mate, love watching the show with my favourite drink, sitting back!

Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
rickta07 Thanks for the kind words but Kelly would smoke me in a heat. Still my all time favorite surfer.

For your liters I think a better formula is take your weight in pounds and divide it by 6. So 180 divided by 6=30 liters. If you like your boards ultra responsive then maybe 29.

I think the stock 5’8” sounds about right in PU and EPS should go good too.

Sorry, back again. I'm on the verge of buying a Gremlin but was curious how you felt it compared to the Rocket Wide and the Sampler. I've ridden both of these boards: Rocket Wide seemed to hang up/push back when dropping in (relative to my style), not an issue with Sampler and great range, just lacks tail rocker so does not go vertical well, flat/skatey feel. Do like better than the Rocket Wide. So how would you compare the Gremlin to these two boards? As always, thanks for the the feedback.

Water Dog Gremlin is a Groveler... the RW and Sampler are more like small wave performance board. Not a good comparison...

I like the Gremlin for 1-4’ surf and it does pocket surfing pretty good. Very fast down the line but not a lot of tail rocker.

Hey Noel im going for the stock 6'2 which is 6'2 x 21 x 2 7/8 = 40.7 L.I usually go 2 3/4 on the thickness.Im unable to see the board before ordering unfortunately but do you think the rails will be big and boxy or more med-low performance type rails. My concern on boxy rails is the inability to bury the rail on the wave face. Please advise what you think.

Hi Noel, do you think with sizing this board you’d add more volume or stick to what you usually ride?
I’m about 140lbs and ride 24.5L in my pu shortboards. Going to get rw in spinetek, you think the stock 5’4 (24.4L) or a custom 5’5 with thinner dims? I felt up the stock 5’5 (25.8L) but felt a bit chunky for me. I’ve over volumed an eps board before and hated it so a bit shy to higher volume

Hey Noel, I'm looking at the Rocket Wide, JS Psycho Nitro and the Mayhem Psycho Killer. I just sold my awesome V3 Rocket 6ft 34.5 ltrs as I need a bit more foam- I'm 85kgs and surf mostly beach breaks near Sydney from waist to head high. Can you recommend between these as a board that will perform with about 36-37 ltrs. Thanks Geoff

Hey Noel, great review! Can’t wait to get my hands on those proto future fins in the near future. I am torn between the neckbeard 2 and the rocket wide, both in spine tek. I have actually tried both boards as demos but didn’t have the ideal waves to really feel out the boards. I surf in Santa Cruz where the majority are mushier waves. I have a PU OG flyer as a daily driver (I’m getting spinetek partially for better durability). What did you like and dislike about each board? since you were able to try both in ideal conditions. I’m looking for the board I’ll get the most out of, that I can take out in most conditions leading up to the days I should use my flyer.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Kainalu The RW has excellent speed and good pocket surfing in 1-3’ surf. For a Groveler in 1-3’ surf the RW is unmatched for performance for me.

The NB2 can do it all very well... the 1 board quiver. It’s the best Daily Driver I have ridden to date. 1-6’ surf this NB2 shines. Good speed, performance, airs, sick off the bottom. You cannot go wrong with either. Both boards excel in mushy waves. Cheers

I sell out 3 boards to renovate my quiver, and now I have these boards: (I am 6,2 185 lbs in shape.)
6,2 rook 15, to difficult to make turns, feels like good board only for experts, but solid.
5,11 gamma helium beach model ( not hp )
5,9 go fish for small days and to feel a good fish

I think it’s enougt for 1-8 feet but...
I want another board and feeling to surf small waves 2-4 feet when I look for fun not to practise my surfing like the gamma surfing.what would you recommend me?

Hi Noel, thanks for the great reviews! I noticed that your small wave boards are not higher in volume than your normal short boards. I’ve always gone with adding a couple liters to small wave boards. What’s your theory on that?

Thanks!

Bevan Y - 5 years ago
@Surf n Show Reviews thanks for that clarification Noel...I've struggled through the last 3 grovellers (all were 0.5-1.2 litres above standard shortboard). After hearing what you have said about keeping the same volume as your hpsb it makes sense and now will be trying this rocket wide in spinetek in the same volume as my shortboard. Cheers

Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
lohena1 I like my boards ultra responsive even in small waves. The Grovelers of today have less rocker and more foam under the chest for paddling and when I go with a couple extra liters on them they feel top heavy and hard to turn quickly. Like the swing weight is off with all that foam upfront. I didn’t realize this at first when I had a stock 5’4” Pod Mod 3 years ago until I tried a 5’2” and loved it. Now I ride most of my Grovelers at the same liters as my HPSB and rely on the foil and rocker to give me what I need to get speed on small waves.

Hey Noel thanks for the review, getting this board bcuz of you!! What size should I get? 6’2 175 lbs intermediate surfer. I was looking at the 5’10 with 33 liters, what do you think? Looks great under your feet man.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Nick Silver Too much volume at 33 liters. I like the 5’8 or 5’9” for you. Your liters should be 31–32 at most... so 5’8” in Spinetek or 5’9” PU.

Surf n Show Reviews

Dustin Lang The RW is a Groveler for 1-3’ surf. The Rocket 9 is more of a daily Driver... I don’t recommend it for Groveling. It has too much rocker. Not even in the Dual Core.

The board is one of my favorite boards to surf. I get excited when the waves are small because of the Rocket Wide in the Spine Tex. The CI website says the board is good up to head high? I wonder why it got sticky for you so quickly. I’ve surfed this board up to head high and didn’t feel the sticking. I suppose I have a lot more rail line @ 5’ 11”. Out of all the boards that you have tested, which board feels similar to the Rocket Wide in bigger/ better waves?

Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Emilio Carrasco Both boards are sick. The RW has a more high performance feel to it and it can do tight turns in the pocket. The RW is still my favorite 1-2’ Groveler to date.

The Modern Two has a Groveler feel to it with a lot of foam forward. Good speed and rail to rail surfing but no match for the RW when it comes to performance surfing.

Noel, Any reports about the Rocket Wide as a quad? Wondering if I should order it with 3 or 5 fin boxes? And what's your opinion about how much having empty Futures Fins boxes affects the water flow under the board and thus the ride of the board? I noticed that neither you or any other high level surfer seem to use the Futures Fins filler inserts to fill any empty fin box gaps. Have you ever tried the box fillers?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
caleb odam I haven’t heard of anyone trying the RW as a Quad. I am sure it’s fun though.... if your a big Quad guy then I would go 5 fin boxes.

My thoughts are not on the boxes being empty and affecting water flow. I am sure there are some issues there but not too worried about that.

For me it’s more about flex in the tail.... 3 fin boxes will minimize tail flex and 5 fin boxes even more. I don’t think I realized how much it affects the flex until I tried some glass on fins.

I say have fun and if you like Quads then you should try it and if your worried about water flow then use the inserts when your not rocking the Quad set up.

Hi Noel, I’ve had the Rocket Wide in spine tek for a few months now with the FCS II AM Tri Fins in large. I’m experiencing feeling like I’m getting stuck at the top of the wave when I’m paddling into it a wave on this board like I don’t on my other boards. In addition, I don’t feel the liveliness in and out of turns. I’m wondering if I went a touch to big on the board or the fins. I’m 5’7” 155lbs and got the 5’7” RW in Spine Tek. I’m thinking it might be the fins for me. I normally like a bigger drivier fin like you do. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks for any advice! Love the videos!

@jason g I think you got a bit too much volume with the board, especially with epoxy. That might be the issue, I've had the same problem in the past and it was because I had too much volume and it was felt in the thickness of the rails.

Hi Noel, if I'm looking for more versatile options in FCS2 range for RW what do you think between FCS II Matt Biolos PC Carbon and FCS II AM PC? First seems to fit more for such a low entry rocker groveler, second is AM and by some reviews it seems to fit quite well, however it has much more rake.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Gábor Ádám I think the MB fins will suit the RW good in some peaky beach break waves. The AM fins have excellent built in speed with the rake but it will pivot a bit slower. It’s really up to you on how you want to surf that board.

Another set of fins to consider for the RW is the AM Twin + Trailer. They are very upright and go insane in the RW.

Hi Noel, another Great well articulated review ! I have been riding the rocket wide in Spine Tech around Asia for month's, It's an awesome little board in 1 - 3 Agree it does not have enough rail line in the water for 4 ft up ish but don't think it's meant too, it definitely feels like a small wave pocket performer than can still grovel also when the waves are lacking, My question would be what do you think would be a good Daily Driver to overlap the Rocket Wides higher end Like a HS Holy Grail or a Pyzel Phantom without going into OG Flyer territory ? Love to see you do the New JS Black Box 3 In Hi Fi Epoxy tech too, Cheer's Mate !

Beach Shak The HG and Phantom are both incredible. The Phantom is so easy to paddle and surf as a HPSB. I love HS FF technology too. I would say both the HG and Phantom will overlap in the OG Flyer territory but they all surf a little different.

Would a rocket wide in 33 L be good addition for slightly more walled up waves or should i also go with ~34L on that. In good/ bowled up small to medium waves i ride a 31L weirdo ripper. Thanks for the video. (I'm 5'10 and about 177lb)

David M Your WR has way more rocker compared to the RW. That rocker will make the WR looser and turn sharper with more traction. The down side to that on the WR is the lack of speed in small waves.
David M
David M - 6 years ago
@Surf n Show Reviews Ive had time now to get used to the RW (34L). For some reason, it does not go rail to rail nearly as well for me as my Weirdo Ripper (31.7L). Could that be the extra double concave and vee in the tail on the Weirdo Ripper giving me that better rail to rail, turning capability? I noticed my Dumpster Diver has similar bottom as the RW and similar feel off the bottom. Thanks for any feedback.

Just got one of these guys yesterday, I took it out the first day with the black sticks as a thruster in weak 2 to 3 foot surf. The fins and board kept wanting to jump out of the water which was great in weak mushy close outs. Today, I did the 2 plus one setup (kaipas with a nubster). The board was super fun and playful but when I took it out in punchy surf it was quick and responsive in the critical parts of the wave with the spine tek. My buddy let me borrow his in the PU, which I felt handled the top end of the wave spectrum (handling better than the spine tek in bigger surf). So all in all, a super fun summer board that seems to perform better in better surf with the single to double set up. Lastly, after all boards that I field test in the water I always ask myself the same question at the end My session “Do I have aspirations to surf this board in better surf”? You know what I’ve been meaning to ask you, wouldn’t it be sick to review carver Boards that feel like surf when the waves are subpar? Just a thought like things to better your surf when the waves suck

Thanks Noel!  I just checked out all these boards at Surf Ride this weekend and the Rocket Wide in a 5'6"-5'7" looks like where it's at.  What FCS II fins would you recommend?  I like your take on a larger fin set with more drive in smaller surf.

Jason G the RW is incredible for waves in 1-3’ range... I feel like it struggles a bit in the 4-5’ surf. The Air17X is a better daily Driver for waves in 2-5’. I also recommend the Pyzel Phantom as a daily Driver.

i was thinking it was a better competitor to the OG PJ. I am looking for a new board for all around east coast conditions. Problem is, i am having double shoulder replacements in the next 2 years so i can't paddle my old boards such as my 6'1" lost psyco ward and others similar. I have be looking at the PJ and the JS psyco nitro and i just came across this review. What are your thoughts? I'm 5'5 @ 170lbs (weightlifter) surfing for 15 years but have injured shoulders and trouble paddling? Noel, can you identify what part of the board makes for the feeling of a board you can pump with (i.e. you move your feet and board is controlled by you not the other way around) and a board that you cannot. I find I move very rapidly and need a board that I can pump and move around quickly? 6'3" at 220 lbs. My go to is a board that is 6'4"ish at 38-41 liters. How much does the width affect vs. over volume?

Vinny P
Vinny P - 6 years ago
Do you have any reviews of using the same board and showing what symptoms a board that is too small, too big and just right will produce? Also, do you know of any similar review channels on youtube or instagram for surfers my size 6'3" 220lbs , shoot the only pro I know of my height is owen wright and he is a beast, plus I out weigh him. All the boards that are "standard" for my size volume are like 7'0, I believe a wave has a max board length.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Vinny P Ok I got what your saying. Boards with continuous rocker are going to be looser and more responsive compared to a board with flat rocker under the belly. A wider board will also tighten things up a bit and sometimes using a upright fin will loosen it up a bit and make it a bit more responsive.
Vinny P
Vinny P - 6 years ago
some boards feel like you can move your feet and the board moves right away sometimes i ride boards that seem sluggish to change and are harder to pump down the line. i am wondering if this responsiveness is based on board narrowness or more rocker or less volume? for me its hard to think of riding a board narrower than 20.5 but maybe thats what i need to look at?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Vinny P Good question... volume is a guide that compliments Dimensions of a board. Some surfers think Volume dictates but I think board designer and board design dictate dimensions and volume. Usually a board maker will have their stock DIMS real close to what is ideal for each board model. If I do a custom I will always look at the Manufactures website and use the Stock DIMS as a guide and maybe go a little wider/narrower by 1/4” according to length and thickness. My point here is don’t let the DIMS dictate completely or Volume dictate completely how you order a custom but use them together.

Now I am not sure I understand the question you have about moving your feet around. Please ask me again and reword it so I can try to understand your question. Sorry

Gary Clutton WOW thanks for the kind words. I would go with the same volume or close to your Sampler. Don’t worry too much about board size... if your Sampler floats you good then use the Liters as a guide to order your RW Flexbar. The EPS will give you roughly 0.5 liters more float. Use the stock DIMS as a guide if your ordering a custom.

For all those wondering, just hear Noel's words about it being the best 1-3 ft groveler, I would agree. Just got this board in Spine-Tek which is ridiculously good. I surfed it twice so far in 2-4 ft waves at (Beacons in SD) that are kind of rolly with steep inside sections. It is crazy fun to surf because it generates an insane amount of speed through all of the flat spots. Speed is the key to everything we do as surfers and this board has it in spades. I was smiling like crazy at how great it is. I had the CI AM2's in it and they are a lethal combo together. I would also say go Spine-Tek if you've never surfed it because of the way that tech launches you out of rebounds and turns also enhances the speed characteristics of the board. I have a Holy Grail, CI Fever, and now this Rocket Wide and those are pretty much the best 3 boards I have ever surfed. Times are great for us all and with Noel's stellar reviews, it's a win-win for all. For all the SoCal friends, get ready, some nice SW is filling in and let the fun begin. :)

I hear you! It's great you are trying to push your surfing to the next level. And yes, it is super expensive to keep on buying the wrong boards. I think that's why Noel's channel is so great. If I go 1 liter over what I feel good on, it really affects my surfing. To put it in perspective...my boards are in the following sizes and volumes. Fever 5'9" 25 liters...Holy Grail...5'6" 25.7 liters..Rocket Wide 5"5"...25.8 liters. So you can see that I am staying right around my magical number of 25 liters. The only way I would go up is if I wanted to ride a step-up...by my Fever has worked great in even 6 foot plus days, which we don't get a ton of those living in SoCal. I would see if Noel can help you figure out an ideal literage for you. He's got that dialed in for sure. Good luck and post back with how it goes for you. :) Peace

Thanks for the reply! I am riding 33L now but trying to go down as my skills progress. It is crazy trying to figure out ideal volume! Seems like the only way is to keep going through boards until you figure it out...gets expensive. Then needs seems to change as progression happens...

What's up Prem! You will love this board for sure in Spine-Tek. I am a firm believer in what Noel says. Try to stay nearest the volume you surf the best. I went the stock 5'5" which comes in just over 25 liters. It does depend on your ability and what you are most comfortable with. Maybe Noel can chime in too with his thoughts. SoCal Boys - 6 years ago
No worries my pleasure. Honestly, all 3 of those boards are so good I can have fun on any of them. My Fever is a PU, but it still goes great in even smaller stuff. I rode the Grail today in 2-4 foot surf, but just as easily could have taken the RW. The RW is so much fun, I think you should definitely get one. I've only ridden it twice, but is a magical board. I will most likely surf the Fever 3 foot plus when the waves have some punch. All 3 of those boards are so much fun, you could just about pull any of them off the rack and surf them in 1-4 foot surf and have an amazing time. I am going to take the RW out this Friday in some smaller stuff, but I was quite surprised at how well it went in some solid four footers. I really feel like I have dream quiver now. I love all 3 of those boards equally. I think that is the goal. If you get a RW, you will not regret it. Good luck and post back how it goes if you get one.

Amir Shahar Both boards are epic... and have good speed. Fantastic review - you make every board you ride look amazing. Quick question - just wondering how this board would sit along side a Pyzel Phantom? Bearing in mind that the purpose of the Phantom is to be a below average wave version of the ghost does it make sense to have a board such as the Rocket wide in your Quiver if you have a Phantom? Or does it make more sense to just have just a Phantom plus Ghost? Thanks for your help Noel / producers of the show.

I was kinda hoping you would say that ;) - thanks for the prompt response as always! Look forward to seeing more of your content. Cheers!

Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
E Dawg I think it would go good if you want a 3 Board quiver. Rocket Wide for 1-3’ surf, Phantom for 3-6’ surf, and Ghost for 5-8’+ as a step up.

Which has more down the line flow? I’ve been liking vee bottoms lately, the way they go rail to rail and make wiser boards feel narrower. Mod 2 has vee vs concave on the rocket wide....M2 has more of a fish feel I guess??
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Matthew Jones Yes more Fish like.... it’s a bit wider across the mid section of the board and not as thinned out in the nose area... so make sure you don’t go to much volume on the M2.

Super fun review. How would you compare this to the puddle jumper hp?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Buster_boo202 Both boards are sick... either are good for 1-3’ surf. I think the RW can do tighter turns in the pocket.

Great review Noel as always ! How does it compare to the Sharp Eye Modern 2? I was about to pull the trigger on a 5’6 M2 in E2 tech
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Matthew Jones This RW is more performance oriented. The Modern 2 is a bit of a cruiser compared to this RW... but the M2 will paddle a little better.

Max ladabaum The PK is more of a Daily Driver for waves 3-6’. This RW is a true Groveler for waves 1-3’. No comparison at all.

cheeehuuuuuu! Love Surf'n Show! Hey surfboard question for ya Noel. I'm 210lbs and looking for a shorter summer board that fits in the 2-3+ foot surf of north county sd. How much thicker in the dims from stock do you think is reasonable? Generally speaking.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
mike powers Really depends on the surfboard model. If your going Hybrid Design then I would go too thick.... what model are you thinking?

Great review as usual Noel. How would compare the RW to the Sampler? I absolutely love the Sampler, and also have a Pod Mod. Does the RW fit between those two, or would it take the same spot in my quiver as the Sampler? Cheers!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Robert marks I like your choices so far... the Sampler and PM were favorites of mine. The RW fits better in the pocket compared to the Sampler and pocket surfs better compared to the PM. The RW is really quick like the Sampler but the PM out paddles them both. All 3 boards are sick but if I had to choose 1 for surf in 1-3’ range I would go RW in Spine-Tek. It does it all in small surf..... cheers

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
PremEye Yes that is where you will buy them. Very different feel compared to the Honeycomb. They have a bit more flex, so they are very alive feeling under foot and will give you more speed out of turns. I would call over to Futures ASAP and get a set of those over the phone. Cheers

What a great review!
Decisions to make. I have a Puddle Fish in which I've had so much fun in but I'm starting to feel the board become to big for me. My surfing has improved I can feel the extra volume of the Puddle Fish get in the way in terms of its volume compared to my weight.

The rocket wide and the Mod Pod are on my radar both looked great under your feet. The Mod Pod looked better in the bigger surf though. Keep up the awesome reviews, oh and those prototype fins looked great with lots of speed and drive.

Hey Noel great show keep it up. My buddy just bought the Rocket Wide but in PU. Do you think when the waves reach 3-5 feet that the PU would actually feel better than the EPS?? You did mention that the EPS didnt feel as sharp in the 3-4 feet.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
I don't think the PU will matter when the surf gets bigger... I think it's the board design. It will go in 4' surf but that's not the ideal wave size for this model. I like EPS in 1-4' surf better compared to PU but it's a preference. Cheers!!
Miguel Marquina
Miguel Marquina - 6 years ago
what about PU?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
The Spine-Tek will go good in the chop if the waves are 1-3'... I think it will struggle in general when the waves get bigger with chop or without texture on the water surface. This board excels in small surf....
Miguel Marquina
Miguel Marquina - 6 years ago
Well What about the chop factor
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
What about it? I think the Rocket Wide will go good in PU but I think it goes better in Spine-Tek. More float, lighter, more durable, better paddling.... everything I want in a Groveler.
