The Sampler is a new small wave signature model by Dane Reynolds. Enjoy the journey as Noel Salas shows and talks about the Sampler. It is designed to go really fast and works well in all sorts of wave sizes and conditions. The Sampler is relatively flat in the rocker and has a very aggressive single concave running through the entire board with a slight double concave between the fins to loosen it up. There is also a slight V in the tail to transition from rail to rail. Noel's custom Sampler DIMS are 5'6 x 19 3/8 x 2 3/8 and the liters of volume are 27.3. This board is very fast and responsive and is recommended for all skill levels. The Channel Islands website recommends this board for waves from waste high to a foot overhead. The Sampler is a board between your standard short board and your fish designs like the Pod Mod or High Five. Noel really likes this board and it is his go too small wave board for high performance surfing. This is what the Channel Islands website has to say about the Sampler. "Take your good wave game to conditions that are not. The Sampler was developed with Dane Reynolds to be that step-down board you ride a little shorter and wider in smaller or weaker surf while not sacrificing performance. It fits in your quiver between something fishy like a High 5 or Pod Mod and your normal short board. Loosely based off the Dumpster Diver, it has flat, racy entry and center rocker, with ample curve out the tail for tight transitions and airs. A generous single concave runs the whole length of the board, with a slight double within the single between the fins, and just a little vee to provide kick off the tail. The outline is full but sleek in the front half, with an exaggerated and slightly forward of normal Merrick hip, and a wide old-school squash tail. The Sampler is suitable for every level of surfer and should be ordered 2-4 inches shorter, 1/4 to 3/4 inches wider, and the same or slightly thicker than the your normal short board." Thanks Noel, just a couple more questions if you dont mind. Some of the waves you surf the Sampler on appear to be solid, in the 4 foot range. I am a heavier but fit surfer who wants to ride a HPSB about my same height. The Sampler fits this requirement. (1) If I were to order one in Spinetek for smaller days and another in PU, which is an inche or two longer but 1/2 an inche narrower than stock, do you think it would handle more punchy, 6 foot (3 metre) days, including barrels? It looks to me like it would. (2) Also, for you, which is more high performance: the NB2 or the Sampler? Going by outline shape, on appearance it would have to be the Sampler. (3) Lastly, is Spinetek without chatter and does it handle windy and onshore days? Thanks!

Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Kapukataumahaka Owheo The Sampler tops out at 4’ because it doesn’t have much rocker. The NB2 will our perform the Sampler in 4’+ surf. If I were you I would go Sampler in 1-4’ surf then order a custom Fever for 4-8’ surf.

I like EPS Spinetek in the chop in smaller waves but it takes some getting used too. I suggest getting the Sampler in Spinetek and the Fever in PU.

My 2 cents on this model:
I have a 5'5 Flexbar Sampler for over a year now (and just got my 2nd one).
Love the way it feels.
Fast and responsive. A good mix of drive and looseness.

(I'm 5'5 - 148lb // 1,68m - 67kg. Advanced+ surfer: 25+years, almost everyday)

Have tried it in average beachbreaks and perfect (but not hollow) reefs/points.
It's always fast, responsive and fun in almost any situation, from waist to overhead surf.

However I don't looove it in super small surf (ankle-knee-high+ stuff).
I find boards like the Rocket Wide, Puddle Fish and Evo to be better grovelers, with easier turns in powerless waves.

The Sampler feels to me more like a daily driver that excels in shoulder to headhigh waves.
In that category is probably my top 3 favorite (from over 100+boards tried over the last decade+).

Love the Flexbar construction too. Good spring and feel. And handle chops quite well.
It does get yellowish pretty fast and wouldn't say is super strong (creased it in easy surf).
But performance-wise it has a really good feel. Being enjoying it more than Spine-tek, LFT and PU lately.

To sum it up, the Sampler is definitely a keeper in my quiver.
(hope the extra opinion helps someone...)

PS: As I said a few times before, this is the Best board review show on the planet.
Helped me many times choosing the right board.
Salas brothers do an awesome job and deserve all our support. cheers, guys!

Hi Noel, I was wondering if you have tried the Sampler in Spinetek? Also, for you, the Sampler or the New Flyer? And lastly, how do you think the Sampler would go ordering it custom a little narrower than the stock dims? Thanks
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Kapukataumahaka Owheo I have not tried the Sampler in Spinetek but they will go mental together.

I love the Sampler for 1-3’ surf and the New Flyer is not a good small wave board in my opinion. It has too much rocker.

Sure you could go a little narrower on the Sampler. The Stock 5’7” felt good for me...

This board in the spine tek and the Julian Wilson’s aircore fins are sick. Can you do a review on aircore construction? Explain the construction and how it impacts the experience with the carbon. In my experience, it’s like putting carbon on your surfboard and how it flexes

Sorry, but just want to comment about when you say, "liters of volume is..." This just doesn't make sense. Would you say, gallons of volume is.....?" No, so wouldn't a more appropriate phrase be, the volume of this board is....? Don't mean to be an a-hole but I just think that when talking about volume that the correct terms should be used. By the way I would also like to point out that when Matt Biolos labels the volume on a board he calls it, CL for cubic liters. This is so grade school. That is volume cubed or meters to the 6th power. It does not mean anything.

I am 6"2 around 185lbs, I'm probably low/mid intermediate, I currently have a 5'9 EVO (37L) and am looking for a new board. I'm thinking of the 6'1 sampler (35.2L) or the 6'2 pyzel phantom (35.9L). Do you think the litre drop too much or do you think I could drop further? How do these 2 boards compare, and given the choice - which one would you go for?

Greeting from New Zealand Noel! I would be stoked with your insight into a couple of questions I have for you. I was wondering if you personally would consider your best all-time two board quiver for 1 to 6 foot the following two boards. The Sampler as your 1 to 3 foot High Performance Small Wave Board. And the V3 Stealth as your 3 to 6 foot High Performance Short Board. From what I have seen you surf most freely on these as compared to some of the other boards you have reviewed. I am considering purchasing both to fit the 1 to 6 foot range in my quiver. I am 184cm and 92kg. Do you think The Sampler shoulder be slightly shorter (1 or 2 inches) and perhaps have slightly more volume (0.5L-0.75L) than the V3 Stealth given its function is for small waves? Also, given my height, weight and the function of each board what FCS2 fins would you recommend for each? Thanks and keep up the good work!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Kapukataumahaka Ōwheo The Sampler and V3 Stealth are both epic. The Sampler should be roughly 2” I shorter then you... but that is according to liters and DIMS of course. Get The Sampler in your Groveler DIMS and the V3 Stealth in your HP Board DIMS.

David Iseri Pyzel Phantom... it has more rocker. The Sampler is strictly a small wave board 1-3+. I have not ridden the Phantom yet but it has the same rocker so I know it can handle 1-6’ surf because of the rocker. Cheers

David Iseri I would choose the Pyzel Phantom or the CI Fever. The Ghost is good for 3-8+ so I don’t think you will ride it enough because the waves are always small. The Sampler is good for waves 1-3+ and not that great when the waves get bigger.

The Phantom and Fever are better all around era for our hood!!!

Hi Noel, love your work man, your reviews are just great.
At the moment I ride a lost v3 rocket 5’9”x19,75”x2,38” = 30lt with thruster fcs2 performer size M.
How do you compare the sampler and the v3?
I'm probably low range intermediate surfer, 42 years old, good fit, 5’8” and 70kg.
What stock dims (Sampler) would you recommend me? I was considering the 5’8” and the 5’9”.
Thanks for your help.

vaffak I weight a little less than you do and ride L fins 90% of the time. I want maximum speed in 1-5 waves. When the waves get 5-8+ that’s when I put in a M Fin. The FCS and Futures website use weight as a guide. I would get a set of the Large CI AM Series for starters. In Futures they are called AM2’s.
dve
dve - 7 years ago
Thanks Noel for your quick reply.
I bought the M size fins according to FCS specs that says they are right for my weight. Aren’t the L fins too much for my 70 kilos?
Which fcs2 template would you suggest me?
And talking about the board, I forgot to mention that if I have to I would buy the V3 rocket 5’8”=28,5lt beacuse when the waves are around shoulder/head high the 5’9” feels a little too much volume under my feet. Are you still with the sampler 5’9”?
Dave
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
I say go with the 5'9 Sampler at 29.4 liters. I also recommend you go with a size Large fins... way more speed in the small surf. When you have a wider tail and you want to maximize your speed you need a wider base fin so that I want you to go with a Large fin. Even in your Lost V3 Rocket. I have not ridden the Lost V3 Rocket before but I know they go good... the Sampler is a sick board in the 1-3 max 4' surf. Let me know how it goes for you. Cheers on the props for our show.... glad you like it and I hope it helps you make good board choices.

Awesome reviews...Im a bit torn between the MonstaBox and Sampler as an all rounder. Would you expect the Sampler to go in slightly bigger waves if they are a fat / more slopey? I am in the UK, so wave quality is a little worse than where you have done your test runs, though we get plenty of waves from this time of year onwards

Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Both the Sampler and Monsta Box are EPIC and you cant go wrong with either. The Sampler is great in 1-4 surf and paddles so good because  of the low entry rocker. The Monsta Box is good in 2-5 so it really depends on what wave sizes you surf most. Both of these boards are great daily drivers and I recommend the HYFY and Flexbar constructions for these types of boards. Both constructions are super lively and go fast in small waves. You cannot go wrong with either model!!! Whatever you get please let me know how it goes.

Hi Noel,
Need some more of your advice after you sent me in right direction with POD Mod last year. I am 5'9,160lbs,52 good shape, intermediate surfer since 15. Been on and off in water over years, and mainly fun boards last many years, till last year. Surfed a 6'0 Chilli, 39ltr. for a few mos., then bought 5'10 Pod mod 35.8 litres for few months, now too much foam to be able to carve and turn hard, and throw spray!.

Demoed Sampler 5'10, 19 3/4 and 2 1/2=31.2ltrs. and loved it, only dilemma is width, it is 19 3/4, a little too narrow, litres are great- cut hard- way better performance than pod mod- just what I'm looking for now!!

My Question for you is what do you think about going up to around 20 1/2, and reducing thickness to 2 7/16= 31.6 litres?
or even 20 1/2 and 2 3/8=30.7 litres?
or equivalent 20 1/4 and 2 7/16= 31.2 litres?
noticed you customed yours quite a bit up in width and thickness.
I want to find sweet spot and keep performance, don't know if staying with litres and changing dimensions to fit is a good/works well ?
I rather have a little wider and reduce thickness, but want performance.
Thanks,
Rick

Ok-I hear you-thanks, I will follow up after trying the 5.9, I seem to be cool with 31litrs on the 2 boards I've tried.
I ordered a custom Chilli BV 5'10 about 31.5 litres, w 20 1/4 W , 2 1/2 so after get that in 5 weeks I should be more dialed on litres.
Thanks !!

R Watty - 7 years ago
Interesting, thanks for letting me know you like std. dims better and great explanation on what can happen with changes-that helps a lot!! I am really looking for performance and sweet spot ,so maybe I will go with stock dim but 20 W. What changes may I expect if I decrease thickness say from 21/2 std to 2 7/16?
I think before I decide I will try to get my hands on a 5'9 for demo first, what do you think about going to 20 W on that one-std dim is 19 1/2? since dropping a inch and std drop on thickness drop from 2 1/2 to 2 7/16 , will this make up for change in increased width on 5'9 to keep performance for better or worse vs 5'10?
Thanks so much for your input btw- really awesome of you to help out!!

R Watty Stoked to hear you enjoyed the PM and you are progressing to a more responsive board.

I guess you could go wider but the wider you go the stiffer the board will feel in your sharp turns. When you go wider it will also make the tail wider too and that will make it pivot a bit slower. The width will make the board faster down the and faster in flat mushy waves but you will loose as bit of performance in the pocket.

There is a fine line on finding your perfect DIMS and liters but I have found that the stock DIMS on the 5'7" Sampler work better for me then the custom one I ordered in this review. The stock 5'7 is 19 wide and I liked so much that I ordered 8 more custom Samplers in different constructions with the Stock DIMS. I say maybe go 20 wide at most if you go custom.

Great channel, Noel!
I had this board three times as a 5`10 stock model. I am 5'11 and 175lbs. It worked well from 2-3 ft up to head high but I have to admit I really had trouble controlling it in more powerful surf and overhead, maybe due to lack of skill but in those situations it didn't hold the rail well and suddenly started to break out. Couldnt figure it out and gave up on it. Went on to surf a 6`0 DX1 in bigger surf and that board is amazing.

Christof Mueller Yea the Sampler is a great small wave board. Your struggles on it when the waves got bigger are real. It is designed for small waves and does not have enough tail rocker to handle bigger surf.

Stoked you found a board you like in the bigger waves and thanks for your comments.

Hey bro,

Bit of a quandary here.

Ive been getting different opinions on whether to go for the 5 9 at 29.7 liters or the 5 10 at 31.2 liters? I like the present way the Weirdo paddles (30.0 Liters) but thought that the 5 10 at 31.2 may be too much volume.

Would the additional 1.2 liters of the 5 10 Sampler over my present Weirdo make it harder to turn that one compared to the Sampler 5 9 ?? I always remember Rob Machado saying that you should go for the higher volume - Foam is your Friend. :)

The LOST volume calculator has me at right at 30.9L

Someone was also saying that because it is for smaller waves the additional volume will help in catching waves, and make the board even faster, but in truth I am not going out if it is smaller than waist high anyway. So I dont want it as a true groveler board in knee high waves, but for the more typical waist to head high that we get for the summer here.

What would you recommend??

Absolutely the best Surfboard Review site out there.

The fact that you rip and are able to translate the various dims of the board into clear language in order to understand make your site a pleasure to view and makes purchases of surfboards way easier. However with all that said I still have a question for you :)

I ride a 5' 8" Weirdo Ripper at 30.1 liters and was gonna buy the Sampler but was unsure as to whether to go with the 5' 9" at 29.7 or the 5' 10 at 31.2 liters. I'm 5' 9" and usually around 178 - 180 lbs and above average fitness. What would be your recommendations. We pretty much surf slopey reef break and beach breaks in the waist to just overhead range most of the time here in Trinidad, so I was looking for something a bit faster than my Weirdo Ripper but in that same sort of flotation range.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and keep up the awesome reviews!!

It's Summer time and the waves are small now.... I would go with the Sampler Flexbar squash from Ci and only wait 2 weeks. If they have to make it for you then you will be waiting for a while.... Just saying!

Joseph De Freitas - 7 years ago
WOW!!! More hard choices :) Thanks. So I have a difficult choice to make. Either get the swallow version from Surf Station in PU now as they have one in stock, or pay the difference ($200 which I dont mind) for the FlexBar one that CI have in squash but will take about 2 weeks to get to Florida. So my question is do I wait to get the swallow version in FlexBar (they may have to make it) or just go with the swallow in PU or the FlexBar in Squash that CI have in Stock now. Decisions.......Decisions......
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
I think there will be a big difference. I think the Swallow tail will be a bit looser and should flow really good rail to rail too. I never tried the Sampler in a swallow tail but I am sure I would like it. I love the New Flyer in the swallow tail..... much better than the squash tail. I know the NF and the Sampler are completely different but I am curious to how good the Sampler would go with as a swallow. Let me know if you get one and how it goes for you.

Hi Noel. Do you think there is any real difference between the Sampler as a squash vs the Sampler in the swallow tail design at the same dimensions?

Thanks

Joseph De Freitas Wow thank you for the props on the reviews and I am stoked to hear that the show has helped you so much.

I really like the Flexbar construction and I think it's worth the money on my small wave boards. Not sure yet on my performance boards because I like a PU in bigger waves. I did order a Fever in Flexbar to do a review on how it goes in some bigger surf..... so stay tuned for that review.

I hope to work with FireWire soon and I am sure they have their reasons. Cheers!!!

Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Joseph De Freitas Not sure about the Sci-Fi because Firewire is not keen for partnering with us at the moment. Maybe in the future. I think the Sampler is a good Groveler for waves in 1-4 range and the Sci-Fi has a bit more rocker so it can handle a little more size in surf. (2-6 waves is what I hear)

Hi Noel,

What fins do you recommend for this board (for me). I use the Futures AM1 Blackstixin my WR, but I the Sampler that SS has in stock is with the FCS boxes.

I would love to keep using the AM1 Blackstix (though you recommend the AM2) and there seems no true FCS equivalent for the AM1 Blackstix, but what would you recommend as a fin in the FCS setup for me, the AM2?

As another option, I could always order the board through SS from CI in the Futures setup but that means an 8 to 10 week waiting period and by the time it reaches me here, that will be the end of summer.

Thanks

Joseph De Freitas My opinion is still the same.... 5'9" for sure. Your talking about .3 liters on the 5'9 compared to 1.2 liters more on the 5'10" than you WR that floats you good already. You will not feel the difference on the 5'9 compared to your WR Volume at all. If you get the 5'10" Sampler that 1.2 extra Volume will feel like a boat and hard to turn and you won't like that in small surf. 1.2 liters extra volume will float roughly an extra 7-8 pounds comfortably and you don't need that much extra float. I say 5'9" without a doubt..... the Sampler will paddle better than your WR too because of the low entry rocker. Cheers!!!
Joseph De Freitas
Joseph De Freitas - 7 years ago

I think it will go good.... with the round tail you will be able to push harder on your turns, more drive in and out of turns, and better hold on bigger waves compared to a squash tail. shortyyys I never rode a 5'2 before things went by Liters of Volume. I am 5'9 and 170 and I rode a 6'0" for 10 years when we used to go by measurements only and it crippled my growth in surfing.

Sometimes you need to take some risk to move forward in getting better at something you love. This kind of change could be exactly what you need to grow in surfing.

The shorter board will turn faster and that's what you need in smaller surf. If the Volume is there then you will still have float.

Great review! I'm looking into ordering a custom sampler but am not sure what the best size is for me. I'm 23 years old, 6'0 and 155 lb. Usually ride my standard shortboards around 28 L. Should I get the 5'8 which is similar liters to my shortboard or get an inch longer for more volume?

Also how do you think this board would perform if its thinned and narrowed out a bit so that its less of a groveler and more performancy? Do you think it might hurt the board?

Thanks in advance for the response!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Gabriel Frota I love the Sampler and you are going to be so stoked on it.

I would go with the stock 5'8. The Sampler is epic in 1-4 surf and I don't think it goes to good in bigger because it lacks the rocker needed in bigger waves. If you are looking for a bit more high performance and a board that can still go in 2-4+ surf then what about a 5'11 Fever? A little more rocker but thinned out a bit. Your height at 6'0 and your light weight it might work really well for you.

Hey Noel, love your work man. Your reviews are my go-to. I'm considering buying the Sampler as a stock 5'10". I'm probably a novice to intermediate surfer and I'm 5'11" and 78kg. Would this be all good for me you reckon? Or would a 5'9" be ok? Also, what are the main differences between this and the New Flyer? I was also considering buying this in 6'0" instead. Thanks mate.

Thanks so much for your reply Noel - I have gone and ordered the 5'9" as per your advice! I usually ride Futures fins, but the one I ordered I could only get FCS II plugs - do you have any recommendations on what fins I should ride it with? Thanks heaps!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Hamish stoked you like the show!!! I would go 5'9 on the Sampler with your height, weight, and skill level. It will have plenty of float and it's a good paddler because of the low entry rocker. The 5'10 might be a little too much foam for you and your turns will feel a bit delayed especially in small waves. The NF has more overall rocker and you can ride it in surf from 3-6+. The Sampler excels in smaller surf and has way more down the line speed compared to the NF. I like the Sampler in 1-4 surf, any bigger then that I switch to a board like the Fever or B&W because they have more rocker.

I own this board love it. Don't understand why CI markets this board as a "small wave" board. This thing really should be marketed as an "all wave" board. Anything waist to a foot or two OH, the sampler is gold.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
I love the Sampler too!!! I agree with CI on the recommended wave size because when the waves get 4+ the Sampler gets a bit skiddish. Because it does not have the tail rocker needed to drive off the bottom without feeling like it's wants to slide out. I think you could ride it as a daily driver here in So Cal. most of the time but when the waves get good I want a board with a bit more rocker to do what I want to do in the pocket. Cheers!!!

Jeff Albritton Stoked you like show!!!

The main differences between the DD and Sampler is the rocker. The DD has continues rocker throughout and aggressive tail rocker. Overall the DD is going to be way more high performance and not much of a Groveler compared to the Sampler.

The Sampler has immediate speed from the second You stand up and can do high performance surfing up to 4 feet. It will feel like it's going to slide out when the waves get more powerful, or super hollow.

Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Blackboybwb Chan the DD has more rocker over all compared to the Sampler and will not go as good in small waves. The beach break will need to be hollow for the DD to beat out the Sampler. The Sampler has incredible speed down the line. Cheers!!!

Hi Noel!!,
Best Reviews by far on the internet (including surfboard design info). The footage of you using the boards is so helpful!! I keep seeing your videos over and over and I always find new details. I'm thinking in buying the Sampler and I'd love to hear your comments on these 2 questions:
1. The Sampler holds surfing in the pocket/can make tigh turns on small waves? The bump and exit rocker are not as extreme as the NF, but I actually have the NF, who handles pocket surf & tight turns by is kinda slow in small waves. I would love to have more speed in small waves, even if I lose some turning capacity as long as I could still be surfing on the pocket...
2. In one of your comments you said that usually you increase your volume by 1 liter when surfing small waves boards vs shortboards. But I've seen your reviews on B&W, Zeus (shortboards)/ NF, sampler (small waves), and your volume is always around 27 liters. Is this because NF/sampler are "high performance glovelers" and you keep the same volume? Should I buy my sampler with same volume of my shortboard?
Thanks!!

Diogo Fernandes de Oliveira Stoked you love the show.

Answer to your first question. The Sampler will way faster in small waves than your NF. Simply because of less rocker. You will lose a little pivot in the pocket but on small waves you gotta have speed.

Question 2 answer. I am finding that I like my boards for small waves around 26.5 and my high performance short boards around 26.5 to 27.5. This is s range that fluctuates between models and rocker. A good example is the NF has more entry rocker and that will slow my paddle and down the line speed a bit compared to the Sampler..

On the same note the Black n White has a flat deck compared to the Rook 15 so my normal dims will change because of the full rails on the B&W. This is why I give a range.

To answer if you should get a Sampler in the exact DIMS as your standard short board DIMS depends on your skill level .

Hey Noel, i was thinking of picking up a 5'7 Sampler 26.7L but unsure if it's a good volume for me. I am 5'9 and about 180lbs, i consider myself an intermediate surfer but with a pretty excellent fitness level. My everyday board is a CI MBM 6'2 around 27L of volume, i have already tried to go down to a small wave board when i bought a Neck Beard 5'8 28.5L but i didn't like it as it felt too boaty and big for me. Wondering if the 5'7 would be to small i don't want to make the same mistake i did with the NB and buy the 5'8 28.2L Sampler and have it feel to big for me again. Great show by the way!

Hey Noel, by far the best reviews out there, probably more so because you can actually surf well and provide proper feedback! I have a weirdo ripper and surf it 80% of the time here in Victoria, Australia. It can be the best board on some days (and then I'm convinced I'll never buy another board) and other days not so much. I like how it holds when turning really hard and that it paddles pretty well. How does the sampler stack up on holding turns and paddling? Have you tried the WR?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Valdo van Zyl I really like the WR but it has too much tail rocker in the small mushy stuff. But that tail rocker is why you can turn it so hard and it not slide out.

I can't compare the WR and Sampker because the Sampler is made for small waves and it does not have a lot of tail rocker. You will not be able to turn the Sampler like the WR in the pocket or on a wave that is steep.

If you are looking for a good small wave board or even a board that goes good in mushy surf then get the Sampler.

I ended up getting this board (the sampler) in a 6'2 standard dims. I was surfing bird rock on the first day of that North West Swell when I collided with someone else that was belly riding on a long board so I didn't see him. I ran him over and did a quick visual check and noticed there was some red paint on one of my fins. I kept on surfing the New Flyer the whole session which was approx. 4 hour session. When I got out and did a thorough check I noticed that one of my fin boxes was caved. I went right up the street to Bird Rock Surf Shop and had him give me a quote on the repair. I noticed from the day before when I did a random quiver check that he had a sampler on the rack (the only C.I. board) and it was in a 6'2 standard dims however it had a pressure ding in it. The guy said he would reduce the price because of the blemish. I panicked and didn't want to surf plus overhead waves on the mini because I remember how it tanked in Santa Barbara in overhead surf. He told me that he could work out a deal with me and let the board go for $250 out the door with no sales taxes and that he would get me back in the water ASAP ( with the Mini trade in which I traded it in for $250) I wanted to get my tentacles out there before I dialed the deal in so I made some calls and sent out some texts. I paddled out that same day and caught waves immediately with the sampler. I feel that the sampler is a notch down from the New Flyer in terms of rail responsiveness and the ability to generate speed. The sampler is fast and I was worried that the New Flyer and the Sampler would be in the same category. So far, I feel the difference in the two but yet longevity has the final say. Miguel.

The stock 5'8 Sampler I had felt slow and sluggish. Not sure if it was the stock glassing, if I ride a CI its usually teamlight...Also with the rails being full and pretty round it wasn't very nimble and that good at generating your own speed like say the new flyer...Has anyone else found this?

Matthew Jones This is the first I have heard. The Sampler is the fastest board in my quiver at the moment and I have had a bunch. The Glassing could make a big difference because you can feel the weight under foot. I had a NF with a heavier glad and it felt slow and sluggish to me but looked good in video. Feel is so relevant to surfing. I would try again and go team light or just get a different model CI.

I have a stock 5'10 and LOVE it. Use it as my go-to short board as I did with a FR before. I'm thinking about getting a custom squashed down Sampler for 1-3 foot weak mush. 5'8 x 20 1/4 x 2 9/16 = 32L. Intermediate 80 kilos. Below this and it is a foamy. What is your thoughts on this? I like a short board outline more than e.g. a fish/mini type board

The DIMS you mentioned at 5'8 x 20 1/4 x 2 9/16 vol 32 sound pretty close to the stock 5'7 Mini. I think your DIMS look perfect for hitting the volume and keeping the Sampler short so it fits into the small waves. Good Job!!!

hey noel, great review. I got the sampler 2 months ago to replace my dumpster diver for waist to head high days. You are right, this is the fastest board I have ridden, it is great in the pocket for fast turns and doesn't bog down for deep bottom turns. I use the average joe for small crappy days and the semi-pro for overhead, this is the perfect fit for in between. Thanks for the good work with the reviews and vids..

HI, super review !

I'm 15 years old, i'm 5'6 for 110 pounds and still growing. I ordered a stock dims 5'7 sampler, do you think that it's the right size for me ? I live in hossegor in France and I really want to feel the sampler like a fast shortboard, that can handle semi-hollow waves in the 3-5 foot range.

I'm currently riding a fat fishy type 6'0, with 33L of volume, and I wanna go shorter for more maneuverability and easy duck dives.

So, what do you think ? I think i'm right, but I want you to give your opinion. I know that there's a big difference between those boards but i'm really sportive. Oh and yeah, i'm a intermediate to advanced surfer.

Again great job, and thanks !

Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
I think the 5,7 Sampler is a good transition from your 6'0 fishy board. I recommend that you try a firm flex fin for the hollow beach break there in France. If you are using Futures fins then I would go with AM1 or the John john medium fin. I know your weight fits a small fin but the tail on the 5'7 Sampler is a bit wide for a small fin. Let me know how it goes.. Cheers!!!

how would u compare this to the new flyer, or the fred rubble. i've had an old hybrid m13 for a while and I'm looking for something faster, that will hold longer quicker rail turns better but still w the volume and paddling speed of a hybrid. trying to step up my surfing cuz the hybrid is a bit slow/sloppy. i was thinking about the weirdo ripper too but that looks like it doesn't hold nice rail turns as well. any thoughts, ur vids are awesome man, thanks.

+Surf Show and Tell Reviews Sorry the Sampler does NOT have that kind of rocker.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
The Sampler is a pretty special board. It is very fast and responsive but for surf 3-5 and under. You mentioned high performance short boards but the Sampler does have that kind of rocker. The FR and WR have considerable more rocker in the tail to hold those long carves you are talking about. The Sampler can do them but it will take a bit more focus on your rail game. The Sampler will have the speed you are looking for. I would give it a ho if I were you. It is my favorite board.

I think the stock 5'7 Sampler at 26.7 liters is to much volume when that is what I ride and I weigh 170. I recommend the stock 5'6 because of your skill level. If you want to go custom and land exactly at 26 liters then just message the with and thickness like you are mentioning. I had a Fred Stubble and when I compare the two I like the Sampler better for my style of surfing.

Hey Noel,
Had a quick question on EPS Layup. Have you used a Team Light glassing yet or just ultra light. I am very comfortable surfing EPS boards and I like them light. I have not surfed a Channel Islands EPS board.

I did see that you had an UL Poly that weighed six pounds as opposed to the four and a half pound EPS board. Was that EPS board a UL or Team light. Any advice would be great.

+Gymnastics Girls Yes, the Peregrine Groveler was a Team Light EPS and it was super light and snappy. I think you will like it because you are used to riding EPS boards. I am not used to it but I am sure I could be if I spend some more time on them. I am changing boards all the time so I don't get to used to anything. Enjoy the board with channels, they are really fast..... Cheers!

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
+Blake Miller Thanks and I am glad you like them. The Sampler is way faster and has a narrower tail too. The narrow tail makes it easier to do tight turns in the pocket. I had a Neck Beard and I really only liked it when the waves were mushy. The wide tail really limits the board from tight turns in the pocket. I hope this helps. The Sampler is my favorite small wave board..... Cheers!

Hey Noel, great reviews mate. You surf good too. Ripping. I'm writing from Australia. CI boards are expensive down here and I really wanna make the right decision. I cant decide between a 5'6 and a 5'8 sampler. I'm 5'6 x 154 pounds. Intermediate to advanced. I've been loving a 5'6 weirdo ripper and it's been working for me in a variety of conditions from shitty beach breaks to point breaks and even slabs. It has surprised me. I wanna replace this board and the sampler is appealing. Most boards in my quiver range from 25-27 litres of volume. The 5'8 sampler has 28litres, which would be the most volume I've ever had In a short board. Thoughts?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
+Shannon Farrugia Glad you like the show and thanks for the props on the surfing. What about the 5'7 Sampler? The DIMS look perfect on that for a small wave board. 5'7 x 19 x 2 5/16 Vol. 26.7 I think this board would be perfect in regards to Volume compared to your 5'6 Weirdo Ripper at 26.2. On another note it will be hard for the Sampler to replace your WR when your surfing the Slabs because the Sampler has less rocker in general. I think the Sampler can hang in hollow 3-4 foot waves but it will challenge your ability to use your rails.  I hope this helps. I think the 5'8 will be too much volume for you..... Cheers!

+Domonique Ascension Gateway Good to hear you liked the review on the Pod Mod and I am glad my review inspired you. I have no plans to do the Weirdo Ripper right now as my review plate is full of the new boards CI is launching this Spring. I do like the Weirdo Ripper it's a super fun board but it does not compare to the Sampler. The Sampler is more for small waves and the WR is good from chest high to maybe 1 foot over head. The Sampler is super fast and it's my favorite board in the CI line up right now. My choice would be the Sampler but because I like the speed it has and I will ride it in 1-5 foot waves and have fun Cheers!

Nice review.  I am stuck on dims & am thinking somewhere between the 5'9 & 5'10 stock ones.  6'1" intermediate @ 183 pounds & ride mainly a 6' x 19.5 x 2.5 SB @ 30L (epoxy).  Would I be better beefing up the 5'9 to say 19 5/8 x 2.5, or shaving a 5'10 down to 19 3 /4 x 2 7/16?

30 litres feels pretty good but I could probably drop a touch on this board.  I am thinking slightly more volume as will be used in smaller waves & PU.  Do you recommend a stock 5'10  or to take some volume out of this?  Thanks for your help
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
I would consider the 5'10 because if you are going PU and not epoxy then you will loose more floatation. How does the float on your board feel right now at 30 liters?

Joao Barbara - 8 years ago
Noel, your reviews are great and showing footage of the board gives us a better idea on how the board really works. Keep feeding us with more...
I have a PodMod in 5'8 (33.5lt) and love it for smaller day's but was thinking in adding a Sampler to my quiver for those days when the waves are still small 2-4ft but more punchy. Do you recommend in going up (6'0 with 34.5) or down (5'11 with 32.8) in volume? My first guess would be to go up, because the board is narrower in the nose and the rails are less full, but I would really like to have your input on this. I'm 42 years, 6'1 and 205lb int/adv.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
+Joao Barbara Glad you like the reviews.... I think you could go either way on the sizes you mentioned but you should ask yourself what you are looking for in the Sampler. I think the Sampler would be a great board for a little more high performance surfing in the mush or when it's punchy. The wide nose boards have a tendency to grab the face of the wave on cutbacks or even coming off the top of a wave when you don't have your back foot all on the tail. The Sampler is going to feel better in the pocket  and be a bit snappier. I really like the PM and the Sampler and if I were you I would go with the 5'11 so it still feels quick and snappy on your turns because your PM is 5'8. Lean more to the 5,11 if you are surfing a bunch and you are looking to do more advanced surfing. If you are not surfing as much as you would like then go with the 6'0.

I am 5'8'' 160lb advanced surfer in above average shape. I ride a 5'7'' (25L) new flyer as a groveler (in between my fish and my hp shortboard) I want to raise my volume to 26-7 L and thought about a 5'7'' sampler.
how would you compare the new flyer to the sampler ? which one is a better performance small waves board ?
did you try the sampler as a quad or heard any feedback about it as a quad?
Thanks a lot man

Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
+David Avron I think the 5'7 Sampler would be good for you especially if you want to add a little foam. The Sampler is much faster than the New Flyer and works better in smaller waves. I think the NF works better in over head stuff though. I  highly recommend the Sampler as a high performance small waveboard for sure and I have the stock 5'7 DIMS and love it. The Sampler is my all time favorite small wave board at the moment and I think you will be stoked on it too.

+Ernesto Piovesan  Glad to hear you have the Liters on your board. That helps me a bunch. At this point you could go with the 5'6 Sampler and ride a shorter board and only sacrifice a little less volume. This will float you no problem but it will feel really easy to turn because it 2" shorter than your current board. The transition might take a little getting used too but you might like the responsiveness of the shorter board. Sounds like the 5'6" is good for what you are looking for.5’6 x 18 3/4 x 2 1/4  25.3 VOL

+Ernesto Piovesan Thank you for the comment on the review. I am not sure what the volume is on the board you are riding but if you have the Liters is will really help me with my suggestion. I think the 5'8 Sampler could be good for you. It has plenty of floatation for your height and weight, I think as you get better you should be going down in volume so your board will be more responsive.  I have a friend that got the 5'8 Sampler and he is roughly your same height and weight and he loves it. He is also an intermediate surfer like you mentioned about yourself. Cheers!!!

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
+Matthew Jones The BC and the NF are nothing alike in my opinion for many reasons. The BC has a swallow tail with no bump or hip in the tail like the NF. The BC has a Single concave throughout with a slight V out the tail and the NF has a single concave with a heavy spiral V in front of the fins through the tail. I also believe the NF is more suitable for back footed surfers and the BC is more neutral, to front footed surfers. The NF has a narrower tail than the BC which will allow for more vertical surfing. The entry and exit rocker on the NF is more aggressive than the BC too. The outline on the NF is curvy compared to the BC as well. These two boards are very different and they feel different under my feet too. I hope this helps with this question.

+Matthew Jones Thanks for the compliment on the reviews. The rail foil on the new Sampler is similar to the New Flyer out of all the CI boards. However the bottom contour and the rocker seems different than all the other small wave boards. The Sampler has very low rocker and pretty deep single concave throughout,  with just a hint of double concave right between the fins. The Bunny Chows' rail foil is pretty full all the way through the tail but the Sampler seems to be thinned out a bit compared to the BC. Like I said more like the New Flyer. I hope this helps.....

HI Noel! First of all thx for the great reviews. Those are by far the best reviews I see in the internet and you are helping a lot of guys like me choosing the best board.

I'm 6'2 - 187lbs. I started to surf 20y ago but the conditions where I live are not so fantastic and, in the recent years, i've been surfing only 2/3 times per week, so I would consider myself as a intermediate surfer.
I've been riding a FW Dominator 6'0 (34L) most of the times on weak/mushy 2'-4' waves. I really like the board as a all rounder but when it's punchier or choppier it's quite difficult to holp such volume on a epoxy board. Thus, I decided to change my board and get back again to PU boards.

I've the change to take a Sampler 6'0 or a #4 5'11 from a local surf shop. Given the above what board would you recommend for me?

+Pedro Pinto Thank you so much for all of the great compliments and I am happy to help you and others. This is one of the major reasons I started my You Tube Channel.I think the Sampler is faster than the #4.  I think that speed is one of the most important things to making surfing fun. I think every surfer would agree if you have speed then you can do more maneuvers. With this being said I would go with the Sampler for the weak/ mushy 2-4 waves even in the chop. Another thing to think about is getting another board that is just for the punchy days when it is 3-4+ like a Peregrine, GRabbit, or the  Zeus. After you get your new small wave board maybe try to pick up a used one for the 3-4 punchy days. I hope this helps.... Cheers

+Giorgi Shtenberg Good question... This really depends on the surfer. The Pod Mod will have great paddle power because of the Hybrid nose but the Sampler will have great maneuver ability. They are both very fast and fun to ride. I had them both and I chose the Sampler over the Pod Mod to stay in my quiver because I want maneuver ability over paddle power. Cheers!

+Bond Summers There is no comparison for me on the NB and the Sampler. The Sampler has the CI Bump on the tail so it pulls the tail in a bit and the board is able to do tight turns in the pocket. The NB felt good down the line on mushy waves but I really had to try to get the board to do what I wanted in the pocket. The Sampler is so easy to surf in small waves and it is really quick too. I think the Sampler is a legit small wave high performance board and I cannot say that about the NB. I have never tried a DD so I can't give you my personal opinion on that board. I know the DD is going to have more nose and tail rocker so it will not be as fast in small waves as the Sampler. The tail rocker in the DD is a bit more aggressive so  it should be able to do tight turns in the pocket. I would like to try a DD and see the difference from the Sampler in a 3-4 foot day at Lowers and see which one performs better. I hope this helps.

Noel,
This is great to have found these awesome reviews and feedback! Thank you so much for the time you put into all of it...the commentary, the videos of you surfing (so relevant to see how a board goes in the conditions it was designed for) and taking the time answer our questions. INVALUABLE and, yes, CI should hire you and pay you commissions. Love CI but not sure why they don't do the same thing you do on all their boards.

I'm planning to order a custom Sampler and am curious on suggested dims. Yours is wide compared to stock and I read your comment as to why, you also mentioned you liked that the stock 5'7 wasn't as wide as yours and it sounds like that's the route you'd go next time.

Do you recommend sticking with CI's stock widths as it relates to their length and just increasing the thickness to get volume up?

I am 5'4, 145 lbs, surf San Diego, a lot of mushy waist to chest days and am an intermediate surfer. I'm thinking maybe 5'5 x 18 1/2 x 2 5/16 = 25.1L if I stick with CI stock length/width. What do you think? Doesn't seem like I'd want to go any longer but I think I need my volume to be close to 25L to get me into smaller waves easier. Don't want it to be corky and am looking for the board to be responsive.
Currently riding a 5'6 x 18 5/8 x 2 1/4 (24.6L) Fred Stubble and a 5'5 x 18 3/4 x 2 1/4 (24.5L) #4 and feel like I could use a little more volume at times or something that gets into waves easier and is FAST.
Hoping the Sampler works as well for me as it is for you.

GREAT surfing by the way...ripping!!! Thanks for your help.

+surfinDelMar Thank you for all of the kind words. For small wave surfing it's about volume for catching waves first, then generating speed while getting through the mush. The volume will always be the first factor for small waves because you want to catch the wave. You also want the foam under your feet to be on top of the water and generate speed which is key in small waves where you have to generate everything on your own. Sometimes you can go a little lower on volume if you have a wide hybrid nose to help with paddle power but then you will sacrifice a little  performance. When you have a hybrid nose you need to make sure you are all the way back on the tail when your doing cutbacks and open face turns so the nose of the board does not grab the face of the wave and bog you down.So the volume of the board is about floatation and you are getting your speed from the concaves on the board along with the fins you choose. I recommend a large fin on small wave boards. The width of your small wave board will help you generate speed through mushy waves. However the wider you go the stiffer the board will become so that's why you go shorter in length. If you are going to go wider on a board then you should also go shorter so it feels more like a skateboard. There is a fine line in the right DIMS for a small wave board as you get more advanced in your surfing. Often the transition from a intermediate surfer to advanced surfer are conversations like this so the person can grow. There is a learning curve in this transition when your in the water and there are struggles but when you stick with it you will see significant improvement in the struggles. Yes you saw my Sampler on Craigslist because I have another Sampler coming in a new material from CI that I cannot talk about yet. The Sampler I have coming in this new material will be the stock 5'7 DIMS which is one inch taller but 3/8' narrower so it will still be loose and have drive. I am also working on a couple of surfboard reviews right now and I only have time to ride boards that I am reviewing at the moment so I figured why not let someone else rip on this board so it doesn't collect dust. I hope this helps..... Cheers!!!!

+Surf Show and Tell Reviews Noel, sorry to bug you again but you're a wealth of information and a far better resource than I've experienced w/ CI. Hopefully every one reading can benefit in some way from these questions and your answers.
Of the two boards you mention above I'm leaning more towards the 5'5 simply because of the width but this is where I am still a little confused. In your opinion, which is more important in catching and surfing smaller, mushy waves...width or thickness/volume? Again, I'm probably on the low half of intermediate and don't want to limit myself by going too narrow or too wide.
The 5'5 x 18.5 x 2 5/16 (25.1L) seems like good volume to me but none of my boards are that narrow but they also don't have that much volume. I'm trying to understand if the extra thickness will help get me into waves as well and glide me through the flat spots or if it's too narrow.
Can you please also give your thoughts on how thickness affects small wave surfing/cathcing waves versus width and at what point the thickness works against us just like the width does at a certain point.
P.S. I saw your board for sale on CL...you going with a stock 5'7?
Thanks, bro, I really appreciate your help!!!

+surfinDelMar I thought the DIMS you were thinking of were 5'5 x 18 1/2 x 2 5/16 = 25.1L? What about 5'4 x 18 3/8 x 2 3/8 25.2? I never get stuck on the thickness of a board when I am going by Liters of volume. I always let the Volume lead me or if I want the board to feel a certain way (in my hands) then I will go more by the DIMS and less by the volume. I think you have to pick one way and go by that. Does that make sense? To answer your question on making the board wider by 1/4 inch makes a big difference. The wider you go will help in the mush but if you go too wide it will stiffen up the board and not be very maneuverable.
surfinDelMar
surfinDelMar - 8 years ago
+Surf Show and Tell Reviews Thanks Noel. If I go 5'4 x 2 5/16 I have to widen the board to 18 5/8 rather than the 18 1/4 CI recommends to get volume up to 24.9L. Someone once told me it's best not to change the width much from their recommendations for each length. What are your thoughts on that and does widening 1/4 inch+ make much of a difference? Would it not be recommended to go any thicker than 2 5/16 if I left the board narrower??? 2 3/8 seems mighty thick.

+surfinDelMar Thank you for the compliments and I enjoy doing the reviews and helping guys and girls out on surfboards. I think CI nailed it on their stock DIMS and volume. I think the 5'7 Sampler looks perfect to me and I would love to get my hands on one and give it a go too. I might get one just because I really like the Sampler and I would like to see how it would go in a bit steeper wave as a standard short board. My 5'6 in the review felt really good but it would be way more responsive if I took it narrower and that would be better for overhead waves with some steep walls. I think the stock Sampler at 5'6 might be a bit long for you and could feel stiff so your custom DIMS at 5'5 x 18 1/2 x 2 5/16 25.1 Liters could be good. I would even go a little shorter like 5'4 and add the volume in thickness to still get that 25 Liters. The shorter the board the more it will feel like a skate board and that's what I am looking for in small waves. I want something that drives through the mush and turns really fast. Don't be afraid to go shorter but keep the volume up to 25. I hope this helps.... Cheers!

Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
+Giorgi Shtenberg Thank you for question and I am glad you like the review. There are a few differences between the Sampler and the #4. The Sampler has a very aggressive single concave running throughout the entire board with a very light double concave right between the fins only and a slight Vee out the tail. The #4 is a single to double concave  that starts before the fins and runs through the tail with Vee out the tail. The single is not as aggressive as the Sampler either. With this being said the Sampler is a much faster board because of this concave and it also has less rocker than the #4. Rocker and this concave make these two boards completely different on paper and in the water.Another big difference is the tail designs. The Sampler has the classic Merrick bump like the New Flyer and the #4 has the two bumps or steps in the tail. The Sampler is a bit more pulled in the tail because of the bump (more like hips on the board) and this allows for tighter turns in the pocket because the tail is narrower. I have had 3 #4's and I liked them all but the Sampler is really quick and loose. I would choose the Sampler over the #4 all day long simply because of the speed and the responsiveness. I hope this helps and I answered your questions.

Great review, Noel... Best reviews online, hands down. Could you please give me some advise if you have a moment? I am an intermediate, experienced surfer, 40 years old and above average fitness level, 5'9" 162lbs. I don't surf as much as I used to and I'm having trouble figuring out the volume I should ride in the Sampler. I currently ride a 5'10" New Flyer, 28.5L as my everyday short board when the waves are decent. I was thinking of the 5'9" Sampler, 29.7L as a my average conditions, everyday board around San Diego. The stock 5'8" is closer in volume (28.2) but a tad too narrow at 19 1/4". Do you recommend going up slightly in volume on smaller wave boards for intermediate surfers or always staying around the same volume regardless of board/conditions? I'm also surfing less and getting older! Do you think I'd be OK with the 5'9"?? Thanks in advance. Keep the great work on the reviews!!

+Scott thank you for the compliments on the reviews. I would go with the 5'9 Sampler to make things a bit easier on you. The 5'8 might be a struggle on the wave catching and generating speed so make it a little easier on yourself. I think the 5'9 will still fit in the small wave troughs no problem. You will love the Sampler!! What a fun board...... CHEERS!

+bermcannon k Thanks for reaching out and the props on the show! I am sorry to hear that the NF did not go as good as you hoped. By any chance did you try a variety of fins in that NF? I have found that sometimes I ride a board with my favorite fins and it doesn't go very good I try it with a different set of fins and it goes really good. For instance I have the NF in the Surf Tech TLC that I am testing now and I tried it with a Medium flex fin which is my favorite and it felt a bit stiff and rigid because of the material of the board. So I went to a more flexible fin like the CI FRP fin and the board feels great. I am getting the flex from the fin because the board is not responding the way I want it too. This is just a thought moving forward so you never have a dud board again...... The Sampler is the fastest small wave board for me on the entire CI line as of yet and I am ridding another one with the stock DIMS and it feels good too. The Sampler has less tail rocker then the NF so it will be faster down the line. It is also narrower in the tail than the NB so it will be more responsive in the pocket. The Sampler only reminded me of the NF because of the hip or bump in the tail area they did not ride the same for me at all. I hope this helps.... Cheers.

I am glad I found this post on you comparing the Neck beard to the sampler, I am alittle nervous about the sampler, this past summer I bought a new flyer and it was a dud...... it was slow in the pocket and didnt have bang. however I had a neckbeard it it was the best board I have had to date, (5'8) so it makes me a alittle nervous on it being compared to the new flyer. the neckbeard had superb paddle, very fast down the line, Can you set me at ease ? am I being too critical ?

+kemisti21 Thank you for the props on my review. I had a Neck Beard and it was only fun for me in really small waves. (under shoulder high) I think the Sampler is the fastest small wave board I have ever ridden at this point and on small waves you need a board that can generate it's own speed with as little to no effort as possible. The Sampler is more responsive in the pocket then the Neck Beard because of the bump on the tail. A narrower tail will always perform better in the pocket then a wide tail like the Neck Beard. The Sampler felt good in waves that were 3-4 and a little bigger so it is also more versatile than the Neck Beard. The JS Black Box 2 is something that I tried one day at Lower Trestles as one of my buddies had one and he wanted to try one of my boards so we switched for a couple of waves. The Black B2 was 28 liters which is roughly 1 liter to much for me but the board felt a little stiff and slow to be honest with you. Now that doesn't mean the board is no good I would need to mess with the fins for a bit if that were my board to make it faster and looser. We all surf a bit different and what felt good to my friend might not feel good to me and vice versa. On the other hand he loved my board and fin set up so he made some changes to his Black B2 and now like it more than he did before. I hope this helps.... Cheers!!!!

Surf n Show Reviews - 8 years ago
+mastodonization1 Thank you for the comments on my review and this is a very good question. If I had to choose one board to make all the surf work for me is a hard question to answer because I think one needs a quiver (at least 3 boards) to adjust to the waves if affordable. I will just answer this question between the Bunny Chow and the Sampler. The Bunny Chow is going to be better in waves 4-5 and bigger because of the board outline and design. The Bunny Chow excels in waves in 3 feet and bigger and can handle the chop with size because you can push really hard on the rail and the board generates a bunch of speed. The Sampler is really designed for small wave ripping and has incredible glide on waves 3 feet and under. The Bunny Chow will work pretty good in 2-3 foot conditions but the Sampler will out perform it all day long in small waves. If I had my choice between the two I would choose the Sampler because I surf 3-4 foot waves and smaller most of the year. If I could only have two boards in my quiver right now it would be the Sampler for small waves and a 5'11 Peregrine as a step up for CA. I can ride the Peregrine in 4-8 foot surf. Beyond the 8 foot range I would need to be at a point break like Swamis, Lowers, or Rincon. It would be a bit of a struggle to catch the waves but I would love the maneuver ability. I hope this helps.... Cheers!!!

+Andrew Cho thank you for reaching out on the Sampler review. I think the Sampler is the fastest small wave board I have ridden yet. It is much faster than the Bunny Chow and the New Flyer. The Bunny Chow is a bit more versatile and can hold better than the Sampler and the New Flyer  when the waves get a bit bigger and have a little more punch. The Sampler has a bunch of speed right from the get go and the other two models have the speed after 1 pump or two. For me small wave boards need to be really fast and good in the pocket. The Sampler does that for me the best out of all the small wave CI boards.I am working on another review right now on the Peregrine as a small wave board. I ordered two 5'6 x 19 3/8 x 2 3/8 liters 27.3 and one of these two boards is an EPS. Just trying to find the fastest small wave board with great maneuverability. I hope this all helps and I answered your questions.

Hi Noel,

+ungar60 Thank you for the compliments on the reviews and my style. I recommend the 5'9 or 5'10 Sampler. I would choose the 5'9 myself because I want the board to be really responsive. It might mean that I need to work harder to catch waves but when I get them I will feel the board better under my feet and be able to sink the rail on my turns when I get good sections and stay in the pocket. Now if you were more of an intermediate surfer then I might go with the 5'10. However sometimes the only way to move from and intermediate to an advanced surfer is to go with a board with less foam so your turns are more crisp and precise. There might be a little struggle at first but if you persevere through it then the reward can be great. Well that's my 2 cents.... Cheers!

I am not sure how the Sampler would go as a Swallow tail but that could be a really fun test. +Offthe Lip WOW thank you very much for the compliments. I am NOT sponsored by CI but I used to ride for them years ago when I used to compete on the WQS. I really like the line of Channel Islands boards and because they are the #1 Surfboard manufacture in the world I thought it would be great to help surfers around the globe with information on the CI boards. I have been asked to Review other makes and models but I am really stoked on the CI boards. On another note my reviews take roughly 1 month to make because of all the surf footage it takes to make one so it would be really hard to do a bunch in 1 year like most of the other review channels out there. +Yuno mi Thanks for reaching out on this review and another good question. I think this Sampler is the fastest small wave board I have ridden in a long time. It doesn't really feel like the New Flyer because I think the Sampler is a bit flatter and has less Vee out the tail and the bump in the tail is not as pronounced.. There is a little double concave right between the fins on the Sampler too so it has a great flow in the chop too. I have not ridden my small wave Peregrine enough yet to give you an honest answer to compare to the Sampler in small waves yet. They are both super quick and I don't know which one feels better just yet. I will have to get back to you on that. I would get my hands on a Sampler ASAP, I think you are going to love it... +Surf Show and Tell Reviews thank you for your response. actually that was a big help. we get way more mush over on the east coast than good. however, when it turns on even a little (like 3+) it can get super steep and super fast. if you don't have the right board that can fit in the wave or has enough rocker...you're screwed. basically I guess what I am saying is that it's better to have a board geared towards slop, but is capable of handling some juice if things change up. I like the reviews BTW. nice to see action on the boards and not just talk. I like seeing boards really pushed to their limits and even past their limits.

+jacobs akcat thanks for reaching out on this review. I really like the Bunny Chow and this is a pretty good question. I think the Bunny Chow is a bit more versatile on wave size and maybe even in sloppy conditions but the Sampler is way faster in small mushy waves. The Sampler was designed for not so good of waves but it goes pretty good in good waves too. I think the Bunny Chow is a pretty good all around board and I recommend that board for people who want a standard short board that can go pretty good in the bad stuff too. The Sampler is a great small wave board and I recommend that over the Bunny Chow any day of the week when it's small. When it get's a bit bigger like 3-5 and punchy I would choose something more like the Peregrine or Bunny Chow. I hope this helps. Cheers!!!

+Lucas Nguyen I never ordered the #4 with custom DIMS and the smallest I rode the #4 was the stock 5'7 x 19 1/4 x 2 3/8 Vol. 27.4. The Volume on the Sampler I rode was 27.3 and the DIMS were similar to the #4 but 1" shorter and a bit wider. I liked the shape of the nose on the Sampler better as it was not as wide as the #4 and I also liked the bump on the Sampler better than the tail on the #4. The Sampler feels quicker in the pocket and a bit faster down the line too.

+Surf Show and Tell Reviews Thanks mate imma try to get my hands on one of these boards, hopefully someone similar to my size. I know ci recommends 2 inches or so shorter than it regular short board for both, does your sampler end up being pretty similar dims to your 4?

+Lucas Nguyen thanks for reaching out and I am glad to hear that you like the review format. I have ridden the #4 a bunch and that's a fun board too but the Sampler is much faster. For me it's all about speed in all wave types and at times Lower Trestles can be pretty soft and mushy too. Right now the Sampler is my favorite small wave mushy board and I have tried most everything CI has put out lately. I hope this helps, and I recommend you get your hands on a Sampler and try it for yourself.... Cheers!!!

Good job and good surf! The Sampler looks pretty similar to the New Flyer... could you compare both shapes? Wich one do you like most? Cheers!

+Antonio Pérez Fernández Thank you for the props on the review. The Sampler is way faster then the New Flyer and I find it to be a little easier to surf as the BUMP is not as pronounced. I also like that the stock DIMS on the Sampler for my volume is not going to be super wide. I think the stock DIMS are going to be 5'7 x 19 x 2 5/16 Liters 26.7. I also think the Sampler is the only small wave board that I have ridden that has quick get up and go with no effort. The Sampler is legit. I liked is so much that I sold my 5'2 Pod Mod which was my favorite small wave board. I hope this answers your question.

Love your work....
zeus or sampler
which is the better paddler/wave catcher?

+old salt  Thank you for the props on the review. The Zeus is not a small wave board and I would only ride it in waves 3-7 feet. The Sampler is small wave board and goes really well in knee high surf to 4 feet. The Sampler is a way better paddler because it has a wider nose and very low entry rocker. I hope this helps you make a good decision.... Cheers.

@Surf Show and Tell Reviews I'm not used to FCSII fin range either--first time with them from futures. Yeah, might just go with a medium template instead.. hard when you're right in between the sizes! thanks for the input as always

+Torrey B That might be true so why not try the Black Stix 3.0 F8 or if you are in the FCSII system then how about the Performer L? I don't know the FCSII fins as good as the Futures but the MF L and the Performers felt good when I did try them out. I am a Futures guy for sure but I have tried both systems in my boards.....

@Surf Show and Tell Reviews I've been diggin the larger AM templates for mushier surf where I need to get as much drive as possible, but find that they're too stiff for me when the waves get a little more playful-cant slide them out as much as I'd like to on my backside. Might not be as powerful of a surfer as you though- 165lbs. Might try the JW or MF mediums next ! good luck experimenting !

+James Mork  Good to hear that you grabbed a Sampler.... Yes I recommend the AM2 for maximum drive. I think you will be stoked on the difference in speed

+Surf Show and Tell Reviews I picked up a stock 5'6 sampler and currently running MF medium. would you recommend running AM large to get more drive out of this board? I am 5'8 150lb. Cheers

+James Mork thank you for the comment on the review. There really is no comparison between the Peregrine and the Sampler. The Peregrine is a standard short board and I would ride it when the waves are in the 3-7 foot range and the Sampler is a small wave board and I would ride it from knee high to 4 feet. The Sampler is great for small mushy waves and I would not choose to ride the Peregrine in small mushy waves.  I hope this helps....

+James Mork I'm sure Noel will have a more accurate understanding than myself, but I don't really see them as comparable... I think if you live in SoCal, for example, this new "Sampler" would probably make for a better every day board.
