This is the Channel Islands Fred Stubble surfboard review at Benny's Boardroom. Yes, I was disappointed as I was expecting simply a more compact version of the Fred Rubble. That said, when I lined the Fred Stubble up against other boards that work well for me, the design is clearly geared more for a high performance surfer, which I am not! I am confident that a lot of surfers will dig this board, it just isn't my cup o tea. Interested to hear your thoughts if you have one. For me this board needs to be pushed hard and near performance dims and is geared to a competent surfer who can drive off the back foot. I think this board gives you enough speed to lay down a good turns on a small wave, enough hold to be able to lay down a hard carve or snap or too drive hard off the bottom and enough release to slide the tail if you have the will, power and skill.

I ride mine with large am fins I'm 83kg and ride the 5'10 , 29 litres

Peace from the sunshine coast aus

+CompareSurfboards.com Yea im curious about the rubble cause the waves i surf on reef break are a bit more pitchy, I've surfed this on a local sand break and it does well. riding a 6'2 this was my step down from a funboard transitioning into the next stage of my surfing.

I've had a stubble for about a year now as my main board (I live in manly so I need the extra volume) and it feels strange to everyone who rides it for the first time, especially if u are more of a front foot surfer, but the more you surf it, the more natural it feels and after 6 or 7 sessions it becomes a lot more natural and I personally think that once u are used to this board, it is exactly like a compact rubble. (I ride a rubble as a step-up)

Hey Benny,
I just wanted to ask you a quick question. I surf a small to medium beach break (Tamarama if you know it) Would you recommend the stubble or the rubble. Originally i was going to buy the stubble as it is better suited to small breaks but you said it was slow so I'm not sure wether to go for the rubble instead.

Alex

I have had this board (fred stubble 5'5) for about 2 months and I love it for the Nor Cal conditions I surf in! The first month I had the board it took some time to get used to it. As you said in the review it is a very universal board for different surf breaks/conditions. Spot on. Great review!

The board needs to be pushed hard and AM 2's sorted my Stubble out immediately, Dumpster or Neck beard goes better in fatter conditions but when presented with a pocket the stubble is fun and fast and looking forward to getting away in some head high reefs soon.

Nice reviews, I'm looking for a step down about 30lts and find your reviews helpful. Have you tried the board in small waves like it's intended to be surfed? Interesting you surfed the Rubble as a Step Up in the Ments. Out of the New Flyer, Stubble or Rubble what would go with?

Hi there!

I surfed the Fred Stubble down to about waist/chest high and it does have the volume to handle smaller waves.  However, between those three, my pick is still the Fred Rubble! It works well in so many wave types!

Also, have you considered the #4, the Lost V3 Rocket or the Hypto Krypto? In my experience, all three handle the smaller end of the wave range better.

Cheers,
Benny

I've been surfing this for about a month now in Florida. Had the same experience in the beginning until I switched my fins to a bigger template (AM2). Started to drive off the tail more and just tried to push it harder in frustration. Now it's my favorite board of all time... my rubble is getting fixed so I can't wait to get back on it to compare. I'll try to write a follow up soon.

Hey Benny,
Thanks for the review! Nice to hear a review from someone who has actually ridden the board instead of regurgitating the description CI puts out.
I'm trying to decide between a custom Rubble and a stock minus Stubble. Looking for one board to cover me in SoCal waist high mush to head high and punchier.
I've heard mixed reviews on Rubble. Some say it goes well in waist high others say it needs to be at least shoulder and punchier.
Since you and JohnnyV have both ridden and love the Rubble which one board would you choose for these conditions, Rubble or Stubble?

Hi SurfinDelMar,

Thanks for your question and for the nice feedback!

My personal preference between the two is the Rubble simply because it works better for me overall. That said, similar to other feedback you've heard, I like other options for the smaller end of the wave range. Have you considered the #4? That's the first board that comes to mind given your description.

Cheers,
Benny

@CompareSurfboards.com thanx Ben!!
would you mind if i ask why you love surf #4??
CompareSurfboards.com
CompareSurfboards.com - 6 years ago
Hi Kouki,

I still recommend the #4 out of the three...I love surfing my #4!

The FCS 2 system is great if you're swapping and changing your fins a lot. The click in, click out system is really quick.

I hope this helps.

All the best,
Benny

Hey Benny i'm a 5'3 Grom and i surf a lot of slow reef breaks, mostly Cardiff and I enjoy quads with a low rocker. So do you know any boards that would be good for that and are 19 inches wide. Thank You for the video.

@Taiga Rand Hi Taiga, I would have loved to have gone to #campshred  but I'm based in Sydney, Australia!  Next year perhaps.

What do you think of the Double Shot?

Cheers,

Thank you and just asking did you go to #campshred . I tried the Double Shot by Darren Henley Designs which was 5'7 20 inches wide and a low rocker
CompareSurfboards.com
CompareSurfboards.com - 6 years ago
Hi Taiga,

Wow, that is pretty specific!  I can think of a few boards that would work well around Cardiff as a quad with low rocker but you'll have to suss them out to see if they match your 19 inch wide requirement.

The Von Sol Shadow may be a good option if you're looking for a hybrid.  The Channel Islands #4 by Dane Reynolds or the Lost V3 Rocket come to mind as versatile all rounders.  Or, and I haven't tried one yet but will soon, the Channel Islands Sperm Whale for a different vibe? Finally, I just picked up a 'Fang Banger' by Panda Surfboards.  It's a thruster but it looks amazing!

I hope this helps you!

Cheers,
Benny
