I got one of these, which I thought was way over sized. Bought it used in great condition and cheap. I usually ride 26L (every day board) but got my rare bird at 40L as a step up. Put a quad on it and it work surprisingly well! Tested it out on a ledgy type of break, about chest high. I found it fast, can take steep drops and turns great. Can’t wait to test it out on even bigger days.

Glad to hear those are working for you. If you want more control in big surf, the DHD fins are pure fibreglass and work well with the Rare Bird http://www.realwatersports.com/fcs-ii-dh-pg-tri-quad-fin-set-large

I'm thinking of using this as a step up/daily driver upto 7 foot. I usually ride 34.5 litres in a 6 foot channel islands sampler. Sometimes I want more length and also a round tail. I want to ride a 6'3 rare bird on days that are rippy so I can out paddle the line up. What do you think about the rare bird for that?

I would add another inch and go with the 6'3, it will be a noticeable difference in paddle power from your Sampler while the 6'2 would feel comparable. The Rare Bird can work in smaller, powerful surf but its not a full on small wave board. If you really want performance in small surf you should consider the Chilli Miami Spice or Pretty Sweet, and use the Rare Bird for bigger days. Hope this helps - Ashlon

I'm going up in liters so i can use in real small stuff like a groveler and then when its 4 foot plus to have the paddle power on the choppy days. doesn't have to draw the tightest lines on those days just catching waves and doing basic turns will be good enough. My sampler i use like a short board. i'm 84 kgs and it only goes for me when 2 foot plus with a bit of grunt in the wave. but sometimes i can't get around the line up when its rippy because i'm not the fittest paddler. but friends who are similar to my with more volume smoke me. i could easily go a 6'2 but it might be too similar to my sampler and not give me that advantage around the rippy line up?

Sounds like a great call. The Rare Bird paddles really well and handles powerful surf confidently. Just to be sure we're not going too big, how much do you weigh? Sounds like you are spot on but I am not sure how you sized the sampler. Stoked to help - Ashlon

Hey Jack, Thanks for commenting. The Rare Bird's mid point is farther forward and it packs more volume per size. The Rare Bird is a better paddler and works in a wider range of conditions while the Hashtag is more maneuverable and makes turns on a narrower axis. All in all the Rare Bird is easier to surf while the Hashtag encourages more turns. Cheers - Ashlon

I love my rare bird! I'm 80kg intermediate/advanced and got the 5'9 29litre. It loves a late drop and pulling into barrels. I've been surfing it here in Lombok indo where it goes awesome in the punchy shoulder to head high days where my other board a lost v2 rocket is too flat and the tail is too wide to push it as hard as I would like. When I get back to the east coast Aus this will be my new daily driver!! I'm running large blue g.a.m fins by Channel Islands !
