Firewire Chumlee Surfboard Review

Ian reviews the Firewire Chumlee surfboard. The Firewire Chumlee surfboard in their new Helium technology is a revelation. You’ll read online that its basically Dan Mann’s take on a Sweet Potato but this is not the case, it has all the plus points and none of the drawbacks. We had our first surf on this board yesterday and to sum up it paddles like a dream, glides like a longboard but turns easily and smoothly and is super fast. Its a groveller yes, but it deals with solid bigger surf just fine. You’ll surf it in waves from knee to head high in all wind conditions. Available at Boardshop: https://www.boardshop.co.uk/brands/firewire?style=1774 Shop all Firewire Surfboards: https://www.boardshop.co.uk/hub/firewire-surfboards

After watching this review, I picked up a 5’9 and could not be happier. It took a couple sessions to get used to the rails since they are more sensitive than any small wave/groveler I’ve ever ridden, but once you do the board is magic. It has way more performance than the outline suggest. I’m 5’10 175lbs and the 5’9 was the perfect size. Tried a few different setups, and settled on AM1 sides with H3 nexus rears = match made in heaven for this board.

Hey guys! Iam 5'6.5 160lbs. Novice. Currently surf a 5'9" Sci-fi & love it. Looking at the chumlee. What size would you recommend 5'3" or 5'5"? Would the 5'5" be to buoyant?

If you are happy with the 5ft 9 sci-fi. I would go with the 5ft 5. Bit of extra foam in the Chumlee does not hurt at all.

Tried it as a thruster its ok but now I put a set of EA Blackstix (speed generating)and large quad rears and its like a totally different board, loving it in the small stuff!

Thanks for the reply. Just wondering how heavy are you and what size chum lee are you using?

er no, always surfed with the FCS II split keel quads, and the board goes anywhere, almost without trying! Have you tried a thruster set, I have not yet myself. But getting good feedback on the Chumlee as a thruster. Cheers

I am 74kg or 163lb I just swapped my 5'3 Baked Potato for the 5'5 ChumLee, as I wanted a groveller but something a bit more performance oriented, I tried it with the Futures Fins Controller quad, which are similar to the FCS II split keel quads, but found it to be very stiff when trying to do a cutback, almost to the point where the board would just lock into the track it was going and wouldn't turn around making a roundhouse impossible, this wasn't the case with those fins in the Baked Potato which was a super loos board. I now tried a set of medium quads and its better but still a bit stiff, just wondering if anyone has had the same problem with this board and what fins are they using?

Awesome, thanks for the great review. I'm just 143 pounds and looking to go with a 5'3 chum lee. Finding a quad fin setup is tough because of my weight. Futures and FCS 2 call for me to go with small fins. Do the regular fin suggestions from futures and FCS apply for grovelers like the chum lee? Or, does a board this size call for a bigger fin?

Insane..especially with the FCS II split keel quads. Just amazing speed, hold, and control. https://www.boardshop.co.uk/fcs-ii-mb-split-keel-quad-fins-medium-mint cheers

Would this board be a solid high performance grovelar to go with a Firewire Tomo Evo?

How would you size the two? I have a 5'6" evo 32.2L (85kgs) Size is good. Want to replace a 5'4" SP as groveller with more top end. Can't decide if I should go 5'7 or 5'9 on the Chumlee
