Firewire Helium Seaside Surfboard Review

Ian Reviews the Firewire Helium Seaside Surfboard: https://www.boardshop.co.uk/brands/firewire?style=1991 Rob Machado's hotly anticipated Firewire Helium Seaside has landed. Whilst absolutely loving the skatey feel of his Go Fish over the last couple of years, Rob was interested in fine-tuning the board to achieve a little more performance for more carves, tighter turns and some composure in the tube. Rather than 'throw the baby out with the bath water', Rob set about refining his beloved Go Fish into a 'ripper' where the Go Fish remains a more 'cruisey' and fun surfboard. The tail on the Seaside has less area, the tips of the swallow have been narrowed and the nose pulled in creating more curve and a board that fits the pocket and turns tighter in the critical part of the wave. The Seaside is designed as a quad and has its concaves and bottom contours based around that...so don't ask if there will be a five fin or thruster option...it's a quad period! Rob said, "I actually redesigned the entire concave setup that I've been using in the Moonbeam and go Fish, and did it with a quad setup in mind so that it all works together with the new fin set (coming soon from Futures!)". Rob named the 'Seaside' after his home break Seaside Reef, Cardiff CA. The board is designed to excel in beach breaks, point breaks. Rob decided on Firewire's Helium construction for the Seaside to keep it nice and lightweight, super-responsive and really durable and ideal for smaller and less punchy conditions. Firewire’s Helium tech is all about making an already amazing set of construction options even better. Its lighter, more durable than regular PU boards and thus far is proving a little more robust than Firewire's LFT construction. High Density Aerospace Composite Deck Skins and a new Paulownia/Balsa mix on the rails gives a faster flex response. Having surfed the tech in a couple of different models it does feel light but the speed through a stiffer feel and responsiveness is exceptional, Helium is here to stay. Firewire surfboards are more durable than other surfboard manufacturing processes, and for 90% of surfers they will improve your surfing. Firewire is pushing the limits of applying new technology and innovation to surfboard design and always has an eye on the environmental impact of what they do, they truly are different to the other board companies out there. Firewire have come a long way since the early boards and the range of shapes and tech just gets better and better. A big chunk of the boards in the range are perfectly suited to the waves that 90% of us surf on a regular basis so if you haven't already give them a try. The staff here have surfed pretty much every surfboard in the Firewire range at some time or another and we speak to surfers from all over the world and get their feedback on how the boards perform in all sorts of conditions so we're well placed to talk about all aspects of Firewire surfboards. We're happy to consider trading in your old board against a new Firewire, so If you have any questions about this we'd be delighted to answer them and advise on any potential board choices or enquiries you might have, just drop us an email to info@boardshop.co.uk or call us on 0044 (0) 1243 674250. I got this board a few months ago. Helium floats and paddles very well. It was waist height and kinda mushy the first time I rode it and thought it was great. Really fun board. I rode ir as a quad and also as a twin. I liked it more as a twin with the Machado keels. I am 77kg and got the 5’8” 35.4 litres. However, when I surfed this board in bigger surf, shoulder to overhead it became really hard to dig the rail in the water for bottom turns or cutbacks. It got me really frustrated. I am thinking about selling it and getting the 5’6” 32.7 litres. that would probably work better for my weight.

Showing my age, i still see the fish & this as from the kneeboard genre. wish these were around when i was surfing. What a dream board. 4 fins bit strange still.

Hard to find with the sizes, what do you recommend for an intermediate surfer of 80 kilograms?

Hi - I just put an order in for a 5'9 (37.3) seaside and am debating if i should change the order to a 5'10 (39.4 L). I'm 6'2 and weigh roughly 205 (93.5KG) and have a untitled haydenshape (38.15 L). I would say i'm just above intermediate and am in pretty good shape. I don't have any issues paddling/getting into waves on my untitled. I am just concerned about the board feeling too corky when compared to what i am used too. I called my shop today and when i mentioned going up a size they told me someone returned a board for feeling too corky.

I'd love to hear your opinion between the Seaside and the Midas when considering a travel board.

I have this board and highly recommend. I've had classic twin keels, hybrid fishes, CI Skinny Fish ect... and this board does "hybrid" better than any other fish board. Most of the "hybrids" ive surfed/owned suck ass (except for the ci skinny fish). Also there is no sticky backside feeling that you get with many other fishs. Great Board.

Definitely recommend going in more liters if you plan on surfing it in smaller waves. I have the 5’6 at 32L and feel like I could of gone up in size to a 5’7. I’m 77 kg
