If you decide to buy somewhere else or would like to support the show, please donate at https://www.paypal.me/surfnshow The Go Fish by Rob Machado Twin Fin was quite the adventure for me. It took some getting used too at first but when I got the fins dialed in I started to have some fun. I had some challenges getting used to this little 5’3” Twin Fin because it is so skatey. What I mean by skatey is with no center fin the board wants to slide out when I transition in my turns and that took some getting used too. I tried 6 different fin set ups in this board and there were two that felt good. The Twin Fin Especial by Captain Fin and the T1 by Futures felt the best for my style of surfing. Machado recommends the K1 or K2 Keel fins by Futures and they felt really fast down the line but a bit delayed in my turns for my likings. I just don’t have enough Soul in my surfing and drawing classic lines is going to take some practice. All in all this board was really fun for me going front side when I found the right fins that worked for me. My backside approach not so much as I could not get the board to stop sliding out on my top turns. I had a good time trying such a unique design and in the end I feel like I learned how to use my rails better on my surfing. I think most surfers would find this board to be fun and exciting to try something new and learn how to draw different lines.

Hi Noel, I'm just bought a new fisher with fins setup as thruster and quad. I wondering if I use a proper twin fin do you think it works? Or to surf a a twin fin the board must be set up specifically to this propose? The job you doing is awesome.

Thanks. You answered some questions about this design. I like the loosness after the take-off, but the momentum on turns seemed to slow the board down for the rest of the wave.

just wanted to let you know, i have a ci twin fin with the merrick twin fins that it came with. i really didn't enjoy the board for the first few months i had it, it had its moments but overall it felt sluggish with no drive. i almost sold it but i ended up getting the capt fin especial because of this review. first session with them was a whole different experience. board is incredible now in waist high slow waves to 8-10ft waves on the face here in hawaii. my favorite board at the moment. thank you for that

Hey Noel, best reviews out there. Hey, can you give me some advice? I'm stuck between 5'7 and 5'5. I'm an intermediate surfer, 5'9. 150 lbs. Typically surf junky Myrtle Beach, SC waves but take trips to better waves every once in a while. What would you do?

I ride a small fish from a local shaper here in cr daily in big heavy beachbreak. I like late drops what can I say lol. Noel next time you do a fish review or ride a fish in general. Try w a small trailer fin. Really will give you that traction and fix the problem when your turning so fast you slide out. Especially when its more powerful. Really changes the game brother.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Tim Eli I agree a small center fin will help a lot. This Go Fish is a true Twin Fin with no center fin option so getting used to it will take me some time.

I have been riding more Twin Fins now and I am getting used to no center fin. Cheers

@Surf n Show Reviews Hey man, Great review! I'm trying to decide between this and a seaside. I'm 88kg and 6'4" and a 'good' intermediate. The volume calculator says 39l volume average up to 42l in weak waves - it comes in really short on a seaside -5'10", and 6'1" on a gofish. Which do you reckon I should go for? I'd be looking to ride it mainly in weak waves. I've also never tried a twin fin before. Thanks! Keep up the good work!

khalil jayson No comparison... the Go Fish is a Twin Fin that want to cruise and the Gremlin is a small wave performance Groveler. If you want to shred the go Gremlin... if you want to cruise and go fast then Go Fish. Rob’s new board the Seaside review drops on Monday...you might want to watch that first before you pull the trigger.

Hi Noel, love your show. Was just wondering if could get a sizing recommendation. I'm 5'10 and 165-170 pounds intermediate surfer who's aspiring to be advanced in the next couple of years. Do you think a 5'5 would be too small? Appreciate your time, thanks mate!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
James Agius You could go either way... if 170lbs plus a 4/3 winter suit the you might want to go 5’7”. The board is really fast and easy to turn. If you go 5’5” then you might struggle with it being too loose.
James Agius
James Agius - 5 years ago
@Surf n Show Reviews I usually ride a 5'11 shortboard (unknown volume but it's not thick nor wide) but I've never ridden a fish before so I'm a bit confused. I am leaning towards a 5'5 only because I don't want to buy a 5'7 and wish I had something more maneuverable under me as I become better. In saying that, I haven't ridden a fish so it's hard to say how I will handle the shorter size. I have a skating background so feel as though I'm progressing quickly. What do you recommend?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
James Agius The height might be a little short but it really depends on the board and volume your used too. I’m 5’9” and riding 5’2” boards all of the time.

Are you thinking of getting the GO Fish in 5’5”?

Hi Noel, Thanks for the review, excellent work. I would like your opinion on the board size. I am hesitating between the following options:

5' 5" 20 3/8" 2 1/4" 29.3 L
5' 7" 20 1/2" 2 5/16" 31.1 L

I have tried the volume calculator of firewire and both sizes are recommended. My level is interm/advan, above avg fit, age 40 (25 yrs exp, surf once a week), 160 lb, length 6' 2'' (yes, a skinny dude). I have a CI POD of 5'8'' x 20' x 2 3/8'' - 29.3 L that suits me fine. I surf a variety of waves in the Caribbean. I tend to go for the 5' 5'' but are not sure. Any recommendations?

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Martijn Henriquez I say 5’7” because your so tall. The 5’5” will work too but I wish I had picked the 5’5” for my review instead of the 5’3” for a little more rail in the water. I think more rail in the water would have given me a little more control.

The GO Fish is really fast and loose so the 5’7” will be quick and nimble.

I got a little confused when you said you wanted a fin to tone down the skatey feeling. I agree that the K1 and K2's are huge and anchor the board too much to get loose and do more performance stuff, but isn't that wanting to board to actually be more skatey?

CW Rodriguez I was talking about the rake or sweep in the fins not the depth. The rake in a fin will make the board more stable and stiffen it up a bit and give it more speed. If the fin is more upright then the board will be looser. Sorry for any confusion.

Hi there,
first of all, congratulations for the review, just excellent. I ordered a 5`1`` and can`t wait to surf with it. One quick question, i am struggling to find a traction pad to fit the board. I saw you placed a "normal" traction pad on yours right? Thinking of not placing one at all but i amso used to the traction pad on my back foot that i don`t know if i will get used to a board without it if you know what i mean. Have a great year and keep up with the excelent reviews ;)

CW Rodriguez
CW Rodriguez - 6 years ago
I put the 5'11" on lay away as I didn't have 7.5 bills at the moment. Hopefully pick it up next week. It's either the 5'11" or 5'9". Thoughts? Also, thanks for including the fin analysis. That's obviously important for any board but it seems even more important for a twin. Great info
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
CW Rodriguez What size did you go with?
CW Rodriguez
CW Rodriguez - 6 years ago
had the same question. I just put one on lay away. I'm 6'2" 210 and intermediate. I typically ride 5'
11" to 6'0" twin fish and wasn't sure what to get with this because I've also never ridden firewire and also hate that feeling of having a bloated front end.. Hopefully I made the right choice
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Garrett Baker That is tough choice for sure. If you surf slow mushy waves a lot and your an intermediate surfer then the 6’1 might be a good call but that is a big increase in volume from the board your riding. If your skill level is intermediate/advanced then I would go 5’11. The 5’11 is going to be very responsive.... and it will paddle good too. I would go 5’11 because I don’t like a board to feel too boaty.

I liked the show Salas. My observation from previous shows tell you're a power surfer. You're style fits juicy waves, you seem to always look for power, speed, and control . To me, riding a twin fin on weak waves is fun but when push comes to shove, having the proper equipment is everything. There are those whose style fit the twin fin and guys ride them good.  I don't see very many of them here in Hawaii where I live but the select few shred.

I usually rides my 5´10x19.5x2.65 shortboard (30L) in 0.5 to 2m south atlantic ocean waves. Intermediate+ surfer. 44 ys . 182 lbs. 5´11. Would a 5´9 be ok? Any help would be appreciated! Did you ever consider with all the fin changes your maybe trying to turn the board into as much of a thruster feel as you can, how about a hardcore 6 months on the full keels and a second video to see it you develope a new wider style range in your surfing?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
krusher74 I think 6 months of riding this Twin Fin would help a bunch. I also think riding one set of fins for a month or two would help me adapt to a different style of Twin Fin surfing like you mentioned. On the other hand I switch boards every week or two for a new review. It's pretty rare for me to be on one board without changing for longer than 2 weeks max. So many boards to review and so little time. Cheers and thanks for your comments.

Good advice to try a full assortment of fins. I have had boards that I thought did not work but turned magic with the right fins. Smart review when you provide the full formula of volume, dimensions, your weight and size and actually show footage of the board in average surf (anything can look good at pumping Sandspit). One suggestion, as part of the reviews, show paddling the board and chasing the peak.

2 things of constructive criticism
1. Your audio has a lot of echo and reverb and makes it difficult to listen to.
2. Your intro story about seeing it on insta and going to HSS is boring. If you are going to tell a story make sure it has a narrative arch so it pulls your viewer in.

Really dig that you went through how all those different fins made the board feel for you. That's often glossed over in other reviews.

You said you wanted to try this Fish to draw some new, different lines.

Brilliant honest review Noel. As you say you are not a twin fin guy. Despite that I think you surfed a lot better on the channel Islands Twinnie. I am not biased to towards either brand. I have a ton of Firewire boards that were awesome and similarly a ton of CI boards that rocked too. One comment, I think you picked the wrong size. I think most of your struggles were due to you over powering the 5'3". I think you need to surf the 5'5" (similar size to the CI twinnie) You are a power surfer and need something under your feet that you can push hard. Rob Machardo is much more light-footed and he rides a 5'2". My thoughts only.

You make a good point Noel, certain boards suit certain types of surfers, not every board will feel good for every surfer. Something more people should think about, rather than just going for the latest thing, really stopping to think about their own individual style of surfing and what style of board would best suit the individual, and their local surf conditions too.

Noel That was the best review yet! You nailed it on the head. Even a great surfer like you cannot surf like some of the pros such as Machado. Your struggle with the board is what I think most average surfers go through when trying to get a high performance surfboard and then surf like Kelly Slater. You must find your own style and what surfboard fits you the best. I have been surfing for forty years and only in the wisdom of age and some extra money have I been able to get a bunch of boards and then figure out the board that fits my style. Then you have to figure out the fins that work best for you on a board and then finally learn what board is best for the wave you are surfing. You are always at a high performance wave there at Trestles, but I would guess that if you took the Go Fish out just down the beach at San Onofre you might appreciate the style of board differently and even want the original fins on the board instead of the ones you ended up liking. Probably even then next size up for some more volume. Surfing is like golfing. You do not just use one club! Surfing is the same. I take three to four boards down to the beach and judge which is best for the waves. This has made my sessions better since now I do not ride a high performance board when a hybrid or Mini-log would be best. I laugh when I see some guy on a skinny little board trying to shred some mushy Huntington Beach wave. I am super curious about this board too so if you want to pass it on I would buy it off you. Craig's List is the best thing. It allows you to buy and sell a board for about the same price and if even if you lose a few dollars it is like renting the board. It is a great way to try a lot of boards. I bought & sold about 30 boards this way and keeps my quiver down to 20 boards. Again thanks. The video was very insightful and your struggle to find the fin and proper style for the board was very helpful.

I have ridden it a couple of times now so I can give some useful feedback - I had the dilemma of whether to go for 5'7 or 5'9, my performance shortboards are just under 30L, but my small 5'3" Baked Potato grovel board is 33L, the GO FISH 5'7 is 31L and the 5'9 is 33L. so I decided as it's my first ever Fish board with the 5'9" and I haven't regretted it so far. I stuck on some Futures K1 keel fins.
First I was surprised how pointy the board is, it paddles well like my BP and can pickup small weak waves just under 2ft upwards - it feels very similar when paddling to the BP. the first wave I got caught out with the timing and went too far in-front of the wave, this board has speed! the balance is something else to get used to as it's very front foam heavy and a very thin tail. After a couple of waves I got used to it but I think this board is really aimed at intermediate/advanced surfer as you have to adjust your timing & really feel what it's doing. the board is very forgiving and feels light and glides effortlessly, I did a foam climb with it on one wave with ease and it has lot's of release off the top - that part really reminded me of the EVO (very similar), some of my other boards would have got stuck on that part of the wave. the fin's feel good (very precise), but I'll probably try one of the other makes at some point like the Sea Shepherds.
Overall it's a keeper, I think it will work very well if you can get the right flow & let it do what it's designed to do. I haven't had chance to try it in bigger than 3ft waves yet... can't wait, should be fun.

You looked much worse on this board than the Chew Toy. However, you had nothing but positive things to say about this board, while you dumped on the Chew Toy.. After surfing the chew toy you stated the board didn't have the "wow" factor for you. However, upon surfing this board you explained it was your fault as you don't consistently surf twin fin boards. So was the chew toy you're fault too? Really confused. If you don't surf wider/hybrid boards, then I'm unsure why you're reviewing them. But don't dump on one, and sing praises of another, when you surfed them both shitty.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Jay O'Brien I think riding this Twin Fin is completely different then anything I have ever ridden before and it was a huge learning curve for me. In this review I just wanted to let the viewers into my struggles as I tried to surf this board the best I could. I agree with you that I surfed this Twin Fin shitty but my expectations were neutral because of this different design. Rob says this board draws different lines and is super fast and I agree with that. This board is fast and my lines were different just a bit hard for me to surf.

I gave The Chew Toy the same attention with fins and tried everything I had to make it go good for me and it had no wow factor for me. I have surfed and reviewed few hybrid Thruster boards now and I have expectations and opinions of what works good for me and what I think is a good Groveler. My posture for each board and review is pretty simple, review boards, give honest feedback, answer questions, and have fun. My point on the Chew Toy was it can surf in the pocket like Rusty surfboards says it can but it lacked the drive I was looking for in a small wave board. Pretty simple for me.

Disappointed in the lack of info about the board. As a shaper I'd like to hear you share more info on the actual board and it's measurements. As in actual numbers!! Numbers is the information that will allow someone to not only chose a board that will work for them now, but in the future as well. This is also the information needed for a surfer to be able to understand what they like and why they like it. It's no wonder the average surfer has no idea about things like how much nose and tail rocker they like, what fin placement works best for them etc. There is so much more info about a board that can be shared by you other than just width, thickness and volume. Wide point placement? Fin placement, toe in, can't etc? Side panel widths? Concave depth? Nose and tail width? Swallow tail width? Foil... as in thickness in other places besides just the middle? Heck most guys have no idea what volume number is good for them. But if you started giving actual numbers and how they relate to the board you'd be providing a real and valuable resource. Imagine if a person could watch 3 or 4 of your reviews on different boards that had actual numbers related to performance. They could then get and idea of what number might work best for them or what style of board might better fit the type of surfing they are doing. I say get deeper, consult a shaper before you record your review and let's start seeing some real info that can be put into use by your viewers. I know this might mean you'll have to show less of you surfing, but I'm OK with that!
William Blaze
William Blaze - 6 years ago
I just don't agree that other surfers will get confused trying to understand their boards measurements. I haven't been a shaper my whole life yet I have always known my basic board measurements. I mean most of them are written on every board you buy! You ever look at the boards measurements before you buy one? Sure you do. And like I said above it will only take 30 seconds to list off the most pertinent measurements for those of us able to process the information. Simply start or end the video with listing the board measurements along with the hight and weight of the rider. That is how you understand what works and why it works for this particular surfer. This information isn't just so some shaper can copy boards but so surfers can put numbers together with performance characteristics. I have no doubt you know when a board is too thick or too wide or too flat for you don't you? And wouldn't it be nice if you knew your magic numbers so you can intelligently purchase off the rack boards by looking at the numbers written on the bottom? I think it would, and does. We're not talking about complicated and confusing measurements or just too much information either. Basics board numbers are wide point width, center thickness, nose and tail width at 12", nose and tail rocker numbers and wide point placement. Those are about the only needed board measurements for consumers or shapers. That's only 7 things to think about. 8 if you add a volume number. That's not too much information in my opinion. Fin placement is a whole other thing and I'll agree that although this information isn't too complicated it's not standard information for the average surfer... but board measurements are and they should be understood buy any serious surfer who buys surfboards. That's just my opinion... but I think there are plenty of surfers who would appreciate hearing more detailed info about all these boards being reviewed. I'll look forward to seeing more reviews (and more info) in the future!! Cheers.
Valdo van Zyl
Valdo van Zyl - 6 years ago
+William Blaze I think it's more the shapers like yourself who want the more detailed info so they can incorporate these numbers it into their "own shapes" or as I call them, copies. The average surfer will get confused with all the nose and tail widths, rocker heights etc.. and will carry this info across all shapes and sizes which is exactly the problem shapers had with customers and volume. Noel would sit for days answering questions if he had to give all the other measurements and not get to actually surf and review different boards. It all comes down to customers talking to the shaper. Just getting a bunch of finer measurements online and not knowing when exactly to use them and on what board to use them on is pointless. Channel Islands have a great model on their website. They have all this other info available but also have a designated team to answer questions on all of this.

William Blaze Noted and I will try to implement some of this moving forward. On a different note I think it's cool hearing from a surfer/shaper like yourself compared to just a surfer like me. However liters of Volume opened my mind to trying way more designs and board sizes then just going off of DIMS. For example I would have never thought I could ride a 5'2 Pod Mod with performance. When I surfed the QS back in the 90's my standard short board was 6'0 x 18.5 x 2 1/4 and I knew all the tail and nose DIMS and worked pretty close with some of the best shapers in the world but I was riding all the wrong DIMS from what I know now. I am learning a lot every day and I am so glad that board makers have implemented Liters of Volume to board DIMS. I am way more open minded now to trying different board designs and shapes and Volume is a good guide for me along with DIMS. I am having way more fun too! Cheers....

OK I hear ya. But let's just say in the future you set aside 30 seconds to give the standard numbers most people use when looking at buying a board (or having one made)... like nose and tail measurements, wide point placement, fin placement, tail width, depth and placement of things like concaves and channels etc. Just having those few measurements would go miles towards educating people who don't know and it would be greatly appreciated by those that do. And it truly would only take about 30 seconds. The reason most people are confused by these details is because no one ever takes the time to explain them... or even make note of them. In my opinion this whole trend of measuring volume is basically dumbing down the average surfer into someone who has no idea of the actual measurements that will work for them. And don't get me wrong I like your reviews and I enjoy watching them but I'm always left wishing for more actual board info! Aloha

William Blaze Wow pretty detailed comment. I think the details you are talking about sound good but these reviews would get longer. I have found that there are some people who want the details that you are talking about and others just want to know how it feels under foot. Most surfers that I talk to just want to know what boards will work for them in their home breaks for their skill level. The details you are talking about can be a bit confusing for some and I am trying to keep it simple. I appreciate your feedback though. Cheers!!!

I rode this board at camp shred a while back in the same dims with the k2s. I often switch between performance boards and fishy boards and I love a good twin fin. I felt this board had a ton of flow but I felt like I had to nurse my turns in this fish more than other twinnys/fish or it would slide out. Still a really fun board. Great review as always! Keep it up!
