Single fins teach you to use your rails . Where you put your wide point is critical to your style and length of board as well as the position of your fin. The foil of the rail dealt with water release. The only real short coming of the single fin was to break your line mid face in hollow waves like Puerto forcing you to the bottom. The answer was 7" and 8" tails. This caused boards to be more specific to the conditions. A 13' tail acts much differently than a 9" tail. The tri fin allowed more adaptability in surfing with a smaller quiver. Standards learned in shaping were to put a v bottom in the entry of our single fins for hollow waves like Pipe and a roll bottom in the entry for Sunset. You needed the forgiveness due to the chop created by the wind when taking off. A good designed single fin has a few tricks that seem to have been lost over the years. The old school shapers understand it and incorporated it, but the newer school seems to be unaware of it. The fin box placement has been moved way too far up, as well as the v has been lost in the tail behind the fin box to the tail helping the board to make incredibly quick G turns off the bottom and under the lip back down. Power and positional surfing was the goal. Now its how high you can fly and spin. Scateboard influenced surfing rather than the old school surfing which influenced the scateboarding style. This was known as sidewalk surfing. I guess that's why Old School Rules. Watch the lines drawn today and watch the lines drawn in the late 70's early 80's. Have you ever had the pleasure of surfing Sunset with Bobby Owens ? If you have, you know what i'm talking about. Power surfing versus acrobatics. No comparison !.The true soul of surfing has always been the underground crew. Travel, share waves, respect the locals and their culture. Though no one owns the waves, the locals pay their dues and time at the spots they surf and love. Much Aloha

Can you give us an advice on witch fin choose for that board? thanks

federico aka voxa on the road I’ve ridden quiet a bit of single fins and my personal preference as a starting point for any single fin shortboard is a True Ames Greenough 4a. The reason is because the fin has a wide base for ample drive to a moderate rake with a thinned out tip and a medium flex. This provides the board with good drive, great pivot, and nice cutbacks. Realistically it is the fin that sets the standard for good single fins. Other than that I would generally stick within the 7” to 8” size range. Plus, mess around and experiment. Everything is relative to the rider and how it makes you feel in surfing. Shaka

Sweet show man, love all your reviews and they help me out so much.. Wondering what the cannon is capable of with regards to manoeuvrability

@ethan dom Cheers for the cool feedback Ethan! I've had many single fins and this Cannon is the most lively single I've had - the shape has been modernised a bit, which makes is more suitable to a modern approach. That said, to me, part of the allure of riding a single fin is to slow things down and take what the wave gives you.

Looks unreal. Does it have good hold in the bottom turn? And how would it go in a long mechanical point break. Better surfed as PE or futureflex? And what size would you recommend for for an intermediate surfer weighing 175lbs. Cheers Benny

@Oscar Harvey Hi Oscar...I'm dying to ride my Cannon on a long mechanical point break. I think it would be in its element. It holds on a bottom turn but you have to draw your turns out a little more in general with a single fin. I've only surfed a PE Cannon but, given that many surfers like to surf single fins with a bit more volume, the benefits of the lighter construction FutureFlex could be useful for this board. For a guide on sizing, check this out (again, go a little bit higher in volume for a single fin - say 10-15%): http://bit.ly/knowyourvolumeI hope this helps you!Cheers,Benny

Hi Keegan Sharp, thanks for the awesome feedback, I appreciate it! I haven't ridden the Lost V2 Shortboard but the design looks more high-performance-shortboard-esque so I have to think the Mini Driver would handle smaller conditions a bit better.

I did a write up for the Mini Driver here if you want to learn more:

Hope this helps you!

All the best,

Love your reviews! So much good info and so on point! I can watch your clips and actually know what I would be buying.

What is your opinion between the Lost Mini Driver and the V2 Shortboard (domesticated dimensions) for a one board quiver type thing? Both handle great in larger surf but what would be the one to jump on once it gets smaller and mushier? 5,10 is my go to length right now and I like around 30L or a bit less for volume

Benny's board room is the best!

I switched to single fins and logs in the 90's but like the more versatile outlines available in the smaller foils. The concave rail/tail system looks epic! Gonna check one for sure! Love the show Bruh, morning coffee regular!
